The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly condemned the unfolding petroleum sector scandal, describing it as a reflection of a deep-rooted culture of impunity and exploitation of public resources.

In a statement dated April 7, 2026, the party said the alleged irregularities come at a time when Kenyans are already struggling with a high cost of living, noting that any abuse within the petroleum sector, given its central role in the economy and daily life, is both unacceptable and offensive to the public.

ODM, however, commended investigative agencies for their swift action in initiating inquiries into the matter, stating that such promptness sends a clear message that complacency in the fight against corruption must come to an end. The party also acknowledged the role of the President in ensuring that the investigations proceed in a professional, expeditious and transparent manner, free from interference or favoritism.

The party took the position that all public officers found culpable must be held fully accountable, regardless of their rank, office or political affiliation. It stressed that the fight against corruption cannot be selective, but must instead be comprehensive, impartial and sustained.

At the same time, ODM cautioned against attempts to politicise the scandal, warning that public rallies, accusations and name-calling could undermine ongoing investigations. The party pointed to what it described as premature efforts by some leaders to apportion blame to individuals who are not directly responsible for financial accountability, noting that such actions risk derailing the investigative process and turning the issue into a political contest.

ODM emphasised that the country must instead allow investigative processes to proceed independently, with responsibility assigned strictly on the basis of evidence. It added that if professional investigations ultimately establish wrongdoing, then no individual should be shielded from accountability.

The party further reiterated that the fight against corruption remains a central pillar of its governance agenda, particularly within the broader ODM-UDA 10-point framework, stating that the seriousness with which the administration addresses the scandal will be a key test of its commitment to integrity, accountability and good governance.

ODM concluded by affirming its support for the Kenyan public in demanding justice, transparency and the full recovery of any resources lost through the alleged irregularities.
