The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has honoured the late Mama Terry Kariuki, widow of the slain politician Josiah Mwangi (JM) Kariuki, praising her as a woman of quiet strength, dignity, and unyielding devotion to justice.
In a statement signed by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the party extended condolences to the Kariuki family, describing Mama Terry as the torchbearer of her husband’s legacy and a moral compass who embodied the same ideals of equity and social justice that JM fought and died for.
“JM Kariuki occupies a special and immortalised place in our nation’s history,” Sifuna said.
“His struggle for human dignity and fair development remains a reference point in our pursuit of a just Kenya. Mama Terry stood at the centre of that painful journey with stoicism and extraordinary grace.”
Following her husband’s assassination in 1975, a killing that remains officially unsolved, Mama Terry emerged as a voice of moral conviction.
She consistently demanded truth and accountability, insisting JM’s murder was a political crime committed by those close to the centre of power. Her courage in keeping that conversation alive made her a symbol of persistence and justice.
Beyond her advocacy, Mama Terry was known for her philanthropy and compassion.
She supported numerous community projects and remained closely connected to the J.M. Kariuki Memorial Hospital in Ol’Kalou, which she championed as a living tribute to her husband’s commitment to the poor and marginalized.
Sifuna said ODM joins the Kariuki family and the nation in mourning her loss, praying for comfort for her children, grandchildren, and the wider family.
“May Mama Terry’s soul rest in eternal peace,” he said. “And may the memory of JM and Terry continue to inspire Kenya to remain true to the ideals for which JM lived, served, and paid the ultimate price.”
