Ombudsman: ‘Tainted’ Politicians To Be Barred From Polls

All public and state officers who recently resigned to run for various positions in the August general elections should be cleared by the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), also known as the Ombudsman.

The commission’s chairperson, Florence Kajuju, said in a statement on Saturday that the commission has been reviewing files of people who have previously held public office and are now seeking re-election.

The Ombudsman, according to Kajuju, will soon make public the names of those who have been tainted and are thus ineligible to hold public office.

The commission’s job, she says, will be to ensure that the names of those with shady backgrounds do not appear on the ballot.

Kajuju says that all candidates seeking clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for any political office must first obtain clearance from the Commission on Administrative Justice.

She emphasized the importance of good governance during electioneering, citing this as one of the reasons for the commission’s active role in this year’s election observation and monitoring.

“Through digitization, the Commission has streamlined the clearance process, and the e-clearance application form is now available on our website: caj.clearance.go.ke.”
