Okiya Omtatah, a Busia Senator and activist, has questioned the process of implementing digital number plates.
According to Omtatah, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is planning to acquire digital number plates without going through a formal tender process.
“I am in possession of a memo written on September 6 by NTSA. It is from the director of registration and licensing to the director general, asking him to give an order for direct procuring,” he said.
“What surprises me is, if these number plates are ready, and are ready for use… samples have been launched, what is the need for this procurement?” Omtatah posed.
As a result, the Senator announced that he planned to file a petition against NTSA over the procurement process.
The Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Transport unveiled new digital plates for cars, motorcycles, and trailers on August 30.
Motorists must install the new plates on their vehicles within 18 months, and replacement on existing vehicles will begin on October 1.
“When the NTSA team calls on Kenyans to change the plates, let us obey and get it done within those 18 months,” Interior CS Fred Matiang’I said while unveiling the digital plates on August 30.
