According to reports, a passenger died and several others were injured in an accident involving a 14-seater matatu on Thursday morning, July 7.
The accident happened just a few metres from the Thuci river bridge on the busy Embu Meru highway.
According to witnesses, the matatu was traveling from Nairobi to Meru when it lost control and landed in a ditch.
A witness to the accident, Chris Mwenda, said he heard a loud bang before the vehicle lost control.
“It was possibly a tyre burst, then I heard screams and cries from passengers as the vehicle left the road. I rushed to the scene together with others to help free trapped passengers,” said Mwenda.
“The injured were rushed to Kyeni hospital in Runyenjes, and others taken to Chuka Level 5 hospital with the help of Tharaka Nithi emergency rescue team,” he added.
Another witness, Dennis Mugendi, a trader at Kathageri market, said he rushed to the accident scene and discovered many injured passengers, some of whom were bleeding.
“Almost everybody in the vehicle was injured, but there is this one woman we fear might have lost her life, but we pray that she recovers,” said Mugendi.
The wreckage of the matatu has since been recovered from the scene as Runyenjes traffic police investigate the accident.
