Two school buses collided head-on in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, killing a private school teacher on the spot and seriously injuring eight pupils and a school manager.
One bus is from Kutus Municipality Primary School in Mwea, and the other is from Trinity Academy in Ndia.
The accident occurred during the morning rush hour of picking up and transporting students to school.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of one of the buses lost control while attempting to overtake the other bus, which was picking a student.
“We tried what we could where good samaritans rushed the pupils to different hospitals in Kirinyaga County,” Grace Kanini said.
Police officers from Baricho, Sagana, and residents living along the road took more than an hour to assist a female school manager who was trapped in one of the school buses.
“We helped the school manager but unfortunately a teacher had died,” a senior police officer said.
According to the police, the Trinity Academy manager has been admitted to Kagio nursing home with serious injuries, while the eight pupils have been admitted to Kerugoya hospital.
The deceased’s body has been taken to the Kerugoya hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The two buses were towed to the Sagana police station for inspection.
