Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, has chastised school principals for overcharging parents to cover the costs of fire-damaged property in their schools.
The Kakamega governor said he had received multiple complaints from parents who were upset about the present tendency of schools fixing the prices without their input.
He believes that schools should hire certified engineers to assess the cost of damages and create a report that school boards should review and approve.
He highlighted Kakamega High School as an example, where parents have been requested to pay Ksh10,000 per student, to cover the costs of the two dorms that were damaged by fire.
This happened as parents of the institution opposed the Ksh22 million in damages levied against them.
Each pupil must return in the company of a parent or guardian and pay a total of 9,823 shillings, plus any outstanding fees.
Gerald Orina, the high school principal, said the amount was reached after a board meeting that included parents’ representatives and the Public Works department.
