A solemn interdenominational prayer service was held on Sunday at All Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi to honour young Kenyans killed during the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
The memorial, organised under the banner ‘Lest We Forget June 25’, drew key opposition figures including Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa.
Faith-based groups such as the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), and the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF) led the service.
Beginning at 3pm, the gathering featured scripture readings, tributes, and moments of silence in memory of those killed during last year’s protests. Organisers framed the service as a national call for justice, healing, and reflection amid growing frustration over rising police brutality and economic hardship.
The June 2024 protests, triggered by the passage of a controversial Finance Bill, escalated into deadly clashes after demonstrators stormed Parliament. Several were killed in a police crackdown that has since drawn widespread condemnation.
This year’s memorial comes just days ahead of renewed nationwide protests planned for June 25, 2025—the first anniversary of the tragedy. Tensions have been heightened by the recent death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody, further fuelling public outrage and calls for reform.
Speaking earlier this week, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda confirmed that authorities had received a formal notice of the upcoming demonstrations and assured the public of their safety.
