If you are a ghost member in a certain political party then your goose is cooked.
This is after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) said it had partnered with the registrar of persons to weed out such people in political parties registers.
The team was in Kilifi to meet residents and sensitize them as the country gears for the August general elections.
Assistant registrar of political parties Florence Birya, said the move will help solve a number of challenges, including incorrectly listed gender issues.
She spoke during a training session for citizens in Kilifi where she said that the people will have an easy time to find out if they are legitimate members of registered political parties.
Ms Birya said the ORPP is currently using the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS) which is managed by the registrar of persons to clear all political parties’ registers.
“We used to receive a list of party members and we could not establish if they were genuine people or just fictitious names. The system has all the names and details of Kenyans with identity cards making it easy to tally the details in the system with the names we receive. If the details do not match the system automatically rejects that person and is canceled from the register. You
The system is expected to bring sanity in party lists which are used during nominations to the houses of representatives.
Kilifi County ODM deputy chairman Joseph Chilumo praised the office of the registrar of political parties for the initiative.
Mr Chilumo said a clean party register will build trust between members and the party.
“This partnership is welcome. ORPP should walk with political parties to make sure we comply with all set guidelines. We are ready to follow the law,” he said.
