Over 20 Dead As Gen Z-Led Protest Turns Violent Erupts in Nepal

Kathmandu has seen a sharp escalation of violence as police used tear gas and live ammunition against protesters attempting to storm the parliament complex.

Curfews have been imposed across parts of the capital and Rupandehi while movement restrictions in Pokhara have left residents confined to their homes.

The protests followed the government’s decision to block 26 social media platforms including WhatsApp, X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube after the websites failed to register with authorities.

Officials said the ban aimed to curb misinformation, cybercrime and protect social harmony. Critics argue it represents an excessive restriction on freedom of expression, particularly among young people who rely on digital platforms for civic engagement and communication including with family members abroad.

Underlying the unrest is widespread frustration over corruption.

High-profile scandals such as the 2017 Airbus deal in which Nepal Airlines purchased two A330 jets have cost the state 1.47 billion rupees or 10.4 million dollars with several officials convicted following a five-year investigation.

Videos showing the children of politicians living in luxury have further inflamed public anger in a country with a per capita income of just 1300 dollars.

UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy described the situation as “so unlike Nepal,” warning that casualties could rise.

She urged all parties to exercise restraint, ensure safe democratic expression and guarantee medical access for the injured. The UN, including WHO, UNICEF and OHCHR, is monitoring developments closely and preparing to provide support if needed.

OHCHR called for a prompt investigation into the violence and stressed that security forces must adhere to principles on the use of force.

Experts say the protests reflect deeper frustrations among youth who feel sidelined from decision-making and ignored in governance and warn that dialogue, rather than force, is the only path to restoring trust.
