Over 2,000 Youth Upskilled By Safaricom’s Hook Platform in Western Kenya

Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications company, has rolled out a major youth empowerment campaign across the Greater Western region under its Safaricom Hook platform.

The initiative, branded the M-PESA Sokoni Caravan, seeks to equip young people with practical skills in technical trades, digital literacy, creative arts, and entrepreneurship.

The campaign recently made stops in Siaya, Vihiga, and Kisumu counties, engaging thousands of young people with tailored training sessions.

At the Siaya National Polytechnic, over 2,000 youth participated in hands-on masterclasses spanning plumbing, electrical work, hospitality, fashion, and design.

Trainees who completed the sessions received certificates, while exceptional participants were awarded practical starter kits such as sewing machines, mobile phones, and engineering toolsets.

“We want young people to walk out of school not just with knowledge, but with real tools they can use to start a business, get a job, or pursue their passion,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC.

In Vihiga County, Safaricom partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Kenya Red Cross to train 250 boda boda riders in First Aid, road safety, and health awareness—essential skills for operators in the country’s high-risk informal transport sector.

Meanwhile in Kisumu, the initiative spotlighted creative expression through a Visual Arts and Talent Showcase at CITAM Hall, Nyalenda. Over 200 contestants showcased spoken word, music, dance, and visual art, while receiving mentorship on digital platforms and monetizing talent.

Safaricom says these efforts are part of its broader commitment to digital inclusion, youth entrepreneurship, and national development.

The Hook platform targets youth aged 10 to 24, who can join by downloading the app or dialling *555# for access to mentorship, exclusive content, events, and opportunities.
