Over 21,000 pedestrians to use Green Park underpass – Roads PS Joseph Mbugua

The Government has taken a major step to improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion at one of Nairobi’s busiest junctions.

The Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass, located at the Haile Selassie – Uhuru Highway Roundabout, is set to feature 24-hour police patrols alongside retail outlets, ensuring both security and convenience for commuters.

Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Roads on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Joseph Mbugua, was accompanied by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) acting Director General, Luka Kimeli and other officials.

The team assessed the ongoing work and confirmed that the underpass is progressing as planned.

“Over 21,000 pedestrians use the Haile Selassie – Uhuru Highway Roundabout daily which prompted the Government to develop this underpass that will address high pedestrian volumes, ease congestion, and reduce pedestrian – vehicle conflicts.,” Mbugua noted.

Luka Kimeli emphasised the unique features of the underpass, describing it as more than just a crossing point.

“The underpass is unique as it will house 24-hour shops and police presence to address any security challenges. This reaffirms KeNHA’s commitment to delivering a durable, safe and environmentally compliant infrastructure,” he said, underscoring the dual focus on safety and convenience.

The project is part of the Government’s broader commitment to delivering durable and environmentally compliant infrastructure across Nairobi and beyond.

KeNHA confirmed that the underpass will be equipped with all necessary safety measures and monitoring systems to ensure that pedestrians can move safely at any hour.

“This initiative reaffirms KeNHA’s commitment to delivering a durable, safe, and environmentally compliant infrastructure,” the authority said in a statement.

Once complete, the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass is expected to transform daily commuting for thousands of residents, providing a safer, more organised, and secure passage under one of Nairobi’s busiest roads.

The integration of police presence and retail facilities is a first-of-its-kind approach, combining traffic management with urban convenience, and is likely to serve as a model for similar infrastructure projects in the country.
