Kenyans in Australia Join Protest Against Rising Abductions Back Home

Written by Lisa Murimi

A group of Kenyans in Darwin, Australia, held a peaceful protest today, decrying the alarming rise in abductions in Kenya.

The demonstrators, armed with placards displaying the names of youth reported missing in December, urged President William Ruto to take immediate action to address the nation’s growing security concerns.

Chanting anti-government slogans, the protesters expressed solidarity with their compatriots in Kenya.

Videos shared online showcased their resolve to draw attention to the issue and support those affected.

The protest comes shortly after whistleblower Nelson Amenya, who exposed the controversial JKIA-Adani deal, called for similar demonstrations worldwide.

Amenya, speaking from Paris, encouraged Kenyans in the diaspora to organize #EndAbductionsKE protests, mirroring their efforts during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations in mid-2024.

One protester in Australia voiced concerns about Kenya’s deteriorating security, economic instability, and rising unemployment.

“We worry about our families back home,” another said.

The group also appealed to Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia, Dr. Wilson K. Arap Kogo, to support their cause.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions has tasked police and oversight authorities with expediting investigations into the abductions, demanding detailed reports within three days.

South Korea Orders Emergency Airline Safety Inspection After Deadly Crash

Written By Lisa Murimi

South Korea’s acting President, Choi Sang-mok, ordered an urgent safety inspection of the country’s airline operations on Monday, following the deadliest aviation disaster in the nation’s history.

Investigators are working to identify victims and uncover the cause of the crash that claimed 179 lives.

Jeju Air flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737-800, belly-landed and skidded off the runway at Muan International Airport on Sunday morning, erupting in flames upon impact with a wall.

Of the 175 passengers, all were killed, along with four of the six crew members.

Two crew members survived and are receiving treatment.

Choi emphasized the importance of transparency during the investigation and vowed to support the victims’ families.

“The top priority is identifying the victims, supporting their families, and treating the survivors,” he said.

The transport ministry is investigating potential causes, including bird strikes and weather conditions.

Preliminary reports suggest the pilots declared a Mayday shortly after reporting a bird strike, leading to the crash.

Global aviation authorities, including the U.S. the National Transportation Safety Board, are assisting in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Jeju Air’s stock plummeted to record lows, and Muan Airport remains closed through Wednesday as recovery efforts continue.

The tragedy has left South Korea mourning, with calls for swift action to prevent future disasters.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, passed away on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia at 100 years.

Known for his deep commitment to peace and humanitarian causes, Carter’s presidency (1977–1981) was highlighted by the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Israel and Egypt.

However, his tenure was overshadowed by economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis, which ultimately cost him a second term.

President Joe Biden declared January 9 a national day of mourning, urging Americans to honor Carter’s memory in places of worship nationwide.

After leaving the White House, Carter dedicated his life to philanthropy, founding the Carter Center, which championed human rights, election monitoring, and efforts to alleviate poverty.

In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his global peace and humanitarian efforts.

World leaders and former presidents have lauded Carter’s legacy, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hailing his role in the Egypt-Israel peace treaty as “historic.”

Carter’s final years were marked by health challenges. He opted for hospice care in 2023 and lost his wife, Rosalynn, in November 2023.

He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, diplomacy, and steadfast moral leadership.

Nationwide Protests Demand Release of Abducted Victims

Written By Lisa Murimi

Human rights activists and families of missing persons are set to hold nationwide protests today, Monday, to decry a surge in abductions allegedly linked to rogue police officers.

Organizers have branded the demonstrations the “mother of all protests” following the expiry of a 48-hour ultimatum issued last Friday.

The ultimatum demanded the immediate release of individuals allegedly held incommunicado by state agents.

Speaking at a preparatory meeting in Nairobi on Sunday, an activist emphasized the resolve of the movement, stating, “We will occupy the streets for as many days as it takes until those abducted are released. The time for talking is over.”

President William Ruto’s silence on the issue has drawn sharp criticism, with activists accusing him of disregarding the escalating crisis.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also alleged the existence of a secret abduction unit and called for accountability.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reports 82 abductions since June, with 29 individuals still missing.

No police officers have been charged over these cases, further fueling public outrage.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations, while the Director of Public Prosecutions has demanded updates on ongoing probes within three days.

Citizens are calling for swift justice as tensions mount over the troubling trend of enforced disappearances.

Child Torture : Ugandan Maid Arrested After Harrowing Incident

A 4-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to aggravated torture by her housemaid in Kikoko Zone, Namataba Cell, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, on the early morning of December 27, 2024.

In the video, Tumwekwase is allegedly seen stretching the child’s body, bending her legs, and severely torturing her.

The victim, identified as Tumwekwase Claire, is currently receiving medical treatment at Nsambya Hospital, where doctors are working tirelessly to address her injuries.

The suspect, 35-year-old Tumuhirwe Precious, fled the scene immediately following the incident but was apprehended days later in Kabale District. She is currently detained at Kabale Central Police Station, with plans in place to transfer her back to Kira Division for further questioning.

Preliminary reports indicate that Mr. Mwesigwa Michael, the victim’s father, has been the primary caregiver for Tumwekwase and her siblings since separating from their mother two years ago. Tumuhirwe had been employed as a housemaid for four years, having been brought into the household through a recommendation from acquaintances in Kabale.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heinous act. The Uganda Police Force has expressed its outrage at the incident, condemning all forms of violence, particularly against children. A spokesperson for the force reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station.

Nottingham Forest End Year on a High with Victory over Everton

Nottingham Forest finished 2023 in style, defeating a lackluster Everton side 2-0 at Goodison Park to move up to second place in the Premier League, sending shockwaves through the top-flight hierarchy.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are quickly becoming the surprise package of the season, with their impressive performances threatening to upset the established elite. With Arsenal not playing until Wednesday, Forest’s victory means they will end the day just one place behind leaders Liverpool, who take on West Ham later this evening.

Striker Chris Wood was the architect of Forest’s success, scoring a stunning opener and assisting in the second goal, bringing his tally to 11 league goals for the campaign. After warning the Everton defence with a missed long-range volley and flicked header, Wood finally made his mark by cleverly exchanging headers with Anthony Elanga before lofting the ball over the stranded Jordan Pickford.

Everton struggled to create genuine chances, with Armando Broja, making his first start for the Toffees, showing promise but failing to convert as he drove a shot wide from the edge of the box. Forest nearly doubled their lead before the break, but Ramon Sosa squandered a golden opportunity when he hit the wrong side of the post after being played through.

The points were secured just after the hour mark when Morgan Gibbs-White, Forest’s captain, cut inside sharply and fired home with precision. His goal not only confirmed the victory but also solidified Forest’s position as Liverpool’s closest title challengers at the halfway point of the season.

As their supporters celebrated, Forest’s rise continues to be the feel-good story of the season, while Everton finds themselves in desperate need of improvement as they look to avoid a battle against relegation.

Savinho, Haaland Gift Pep A Milestone Win Over Leicester

Manchester City’s title defence is hanging by a thread after a laboured 2-0 win over struggling Leicester marked their second victory in 10 Premier League games.

Pep Guardiola celebrated his 500th game in charge of the Blues with a nervy victory at the King Power Stadium, but it did little to ease the pressure on his team.

They remain in fifth place, a whopping 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, who can take control of the league with a win at West Ham later on Sunday.

Guardiola had vowed not to give up on his team’s season, but it’s clear they need to find some confidence quickly. They were made to work hard for this win, with Jamie Vardy twice going close and Facundo Buonanotte hitting the post for the Foxes.

The hosts are now in freefall, with four straight defeats and five in seven games since Steve Cooper was sacked in November. They are staring relegation in the face, and it’s hard to see how they can turn things around.

City’s Savinho opened the scoring with his first goal for the club in the 21st minute, firing high from six yards after Jakub Stolarczyk had denied Erling Haaland early on. Phil Foden’s shot was parried by Stolarczyk, and Savinho made no mistake from close range.

Leicester sensed they could get back into the game and James Justin came close to a leveller, but Manuel Akanji hacked clear. Vardy then had a chance to level from six yards, but he fired over.

Haaland ended any hopes of a comeback with 16 minutes left, heading in Savinho’s cross to seal the win for City.

Partial Closure of Kipande Road to Facilitate Infrastructure Improvements

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has announced a partial closure of Kipande Road in Nairobi, effective Friday, to allow for the installation of a cross culvert aimed at enhancing road connectivity.

This closure is set to remain in place until December 31, 2024.

KENHA’s Director General, Kungu Ndungu, stated that during this period, all traffic will be redirected through alternative routes, including the Embu-Nairobi Highway, Prof. Wangari Maathai Road, Limuru Road, and Kolobot Road.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution while navigating around the construction zones and to adhere to the traffic management plans available on KENHA’s website.

Cooperation with police officers and traffic marshals present on-site is highly encouraged to ensure safety and efficiency.

This announcement follows a series of traffic disruptions throughout Nairobi, as KENHA seeks to consolidate road maintenance efforts before the year’s end.

Recently, sections of the Southern bypass were closed for two weeks to rehabilitate expansion joints and reconstruct concrete pavement. Additionally, a section of Kiambu Road underwent closure for similar rehabilitation efforts.

The ongoing road works have notably affected Mombasa Road, one of Nairobi’s busiest highways, which has faced significant delays throughout December due to repairs from General Motors to the Southern bypass entry.

Abel Fights Back: Former DCI Officer Files Complaint Against Bloggers, Denies Links To Abductions

Former DCI officer Abel Kimutai Bitok has filed a formal complaint with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over alleged cyber harassment following claims linking him to recent abductions.

Through his lawyers, HAM K. Lagat Advocates, Mr. Bitok has accused two social media users of defamation and malicious online attacks, exposing him and his family to significant risk.

The controversy arose after remarks by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on December 27, 2024, alleging the existence of a rogue police unit operating independently of the Inspector General.

Gachagua further suggested that the unit was involved in abductions and killings, sparking widespread public outrage and online speculation.

“There is a unit that is not under the command of the IG of Police. There’s a building in Nairobi the 21st floor at the city center, where the unit is operating from, led by a certain Mr. Abel. Abel is a cousin to a very senior official in this government,” Gachagua revealed in a press address on Friday.

“And if this unit is not dismantled we will be giving the name of the building and the full names of that officer and his cousin. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is the commander of that unit,” he added.

Following these statements, a popular social media user, @_oduk (identified as Daniel Onyango), posted Mr. Bitok’s LinkedIn profile, captioning it: “So Abel is the guy coordinating abductions. Time to dig deeper about him. Including his wife and children.”

The post garnered over 217,000 views. Another user, @DanChepta, referred to Mr. Bitok as “The senior abductor,” sharing his photo in a post that reached 197,000 views.

In his complaint, Mr. Bitok denies any involvement in the alleged abductions, citing that he resigned from the National Police Service in September 2022. He argues that the posts are false and malicious, violating Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

His lawyers claim that these allegations have subjected him to public anger and potential harm. They have formally requested the DCI to investigate the two users for defamation and cyber harassment.

Tragedy in the Skies: The Deadliest Plane Crash in South Korean History

The Jeju airplane crash in South Korea has left 179 of the 181 individuals onboard dead, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in the country’s history.

The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, met a tragic fate as it attempted to land at Muan International Airport on Sunday morning.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting that a bird strike—a collision between the aircraft and a bird—may have played a role.

Bird strikes can be perilous, particularly for turbofan engines like those on the Boeing 737, and pilots receive training to be alert, especially during dawn or dusk when birds are most active. Sadly, on this occasion, the efforts made by air traffic control to warn the pilots of a potential bird encounter came too late.

Witnesses described horrifying scenes as the aircraft struggled to land—two minutes after receiving the warning, the pilot declared a Mayday.

Video footage shows the plane touching down without extending its landing gear, skidding across the runway before crashing into a wall and erupting in flames. Eyewitness accounts reported hearing a loud bang followed by a series of explosions, painting a vivid picture of the chaos that ensued.

Among the victims are passengers returning from holiday, with the youngest just three years old and the oldest 78. The emotional toll has been devastating, with families gathering at Muan International Airport, grappling with loss and uncertainty as they await news about their loved ones. The South Korean government quickly responded by declaring a special disaster zone, enabling access to central government funding for recovery efforts.

Emergency personnel have been working tirelessly, with over 1,500 personnel deployed to search for remains and wreckage. As recovery continues, the grief is palpable.

Jeju Air has expressed its condolences to the victims’ families, emphasizing that this fatal accident is the first in the airline’s 18-year history. Simultaneously, Boeing has offered its sympathies to those affected.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, South Korea has entered a period of national mourning, a somber reminder of the fragility of life. Acting President Choi Sang-mok has vowed to support the injured and bereaved as the nation grapples with this heartbreaking loss.
