Glasgow beat Cardiff to move top of URC table

Stacy Boit,

Glasgow Warriors cruised to a bonus-point victory over Cardiff to go top of the United Rugby Championship with one round of the regular season remaining.

Jack Dempsey, Kyle Steyn and Johnny Matthews all crossed in the first half as Glasgow carved out a 21-7 half-time lead, with Josh Adams providing the solitary Cardiff response.

Matthews added another after the break, followed by Patrick Schickerling and Kyle Rowe, with tries from Danny Southworth and Jacob Beetham little more than consolation for the Welsh side.

Ulster’s draw with Stormers opened the door for Glasgow to reclaim top spot, and Warriors travel to Belfast next weekend knowing a bonus-point win would secure a first-place finish and home advantage all the way through any potential path to the final.

Cardiff host Stormers in the final round and still have work to do to secure a top-eight spot and a place in the play-offs.

After a largely dull opening 18 minutes, Glasgow sprang to life with a slick move that set Dempsey free up the touchline. The big number eight was hauled down just short, but a couple of phases later Dempsey was ready for another blast and this time found his way to the line.

Warriors then carved Cardiff open all too easily with a strike move off a scrum to send Steyn clear to score.

The visitors needed a response and they got it when Adams darted over from close range and Sheedy converted to halve the deficit.

Glasgow reasserted themselves quickly. Matthews, who is departing Scotstoun this summer for French side Montauban, did what he has done so many times before by finishing off a rolling line-out maul to score.

The fourth try came in almost identical fashion, Matthews ploughing over to secure the bonus point that could prove vital in the final table.

Cardiff grabbed their second try when replacement prop Southworth burrowed over from close range, but substitute Schickerling responded in kind with Glasgow’s fifth of the evening.

Rowe burst through for a magnificent try and although Beetham crossed for a late consolation, the game had long been over as a contest.

Maseno School unveils Ksh.2 billion redevelopment plan ahead of 120-year celebrations to be graced by President Ruto

By Bonface Mulyungi

As Maseno School marks 120 years on today Saturday on 9th, May 2026, the milestone celebrations are being matched by an ambitious vision to redefine the institution’s future.

Old boys and friends of the school are now rallying behind a Ksh.2 billion redevelopment masterplan aimed at transforming one of Kenya’s oldest and most prestigious learning institutions into a modern hub of academic excellence.

The proposed facelift includes the construction of new classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, upgraded sports facilities, expanded student accommodation and enhanced digital learning spaces.

Beneath the towering gum trees of Mabungo Hills in Kisumu County stands the institution whose legacy is deeply interwoven with the story of Kenya itself.

Founded in 1906 by missionary Reverend John Willis, Maseno School started as a modest mission station near the Equator. More than a century later, it has risen to become one of Kenya’s most iconic centres of learning, moulding generations of leaders who have left their mark in politics, business, academia and sports. For decades, the school’s identity has been rooted in discipline, academic excellence and strong tradition.

As old boys prepare to welcome the Head of State and other dignitaries for the 120-year celebrations, they say there is now an urgent need to align the institution with the changing demands of modern education.

“The buildings are quite old, they are decaying. Soon they will not be fit for occupation,” said Maseno School Old Boys and Friends Chair Joe Ager.It is a challenge that has inspired the alumni and friends of Maseno to champion an ambitious Ksh.2 billion redevelopment masterplan aimed at redefining the future of the institution.

“We are going to build a new STEM complex, social sciences and humanities, and a complex for arts and sports,” Ager added.

Old boys of the institution, which has produced renowned leaders including the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, are now eager to preserve some of its iconic infrastructure as a way of honouring the school’s rich legacy and historical identity.“I joined this school 70 years ago when it was celebrating 50 years, the golden jubilee. This school took me as a good boy and made me better,” said an old boy, Dr. Joseph Aluoch.

According to the alumni, the school population has grown tenfold since its inception, while past redevelopment efforts have fallen short of the required standards to match its current demands.

“They have a population of 2,800 students and there is hardly any space, and whatever space there is is not as good as when we were here. Fifty-six years ago, there were 300 students,” Ager noted.

The old boys say the Ksh.2 billion project goes beyond infrastructure development, describing it as the start of a full reinvention of a school being shaped to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

Shaw named Football Writers’ Women’s Player of Year

Stacy Boit,

Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw has won the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

Shaw is set to secure a third successive Women’s Super League (WSL) Golden Boot after scoring 19 goals in 21 appearances, with one league game remaining for newly crowned champions City.

The 29-year-old, who joined City in 2021, is just one goal away from becoming the first player in WSL history to score 20 or more goals in three different seasons.

It is the second time the Jamaica forward has won the FWA award, having first done so for the 2023–24 season.

Shaw won the vote by a landslide, with Arsenal striker Alessia Russo – who was last year’s winner – in second, while Chelsea forward Lauren James finished third.

“Russia and Ukraine to observe three-day ceasefire” President Trump says

By Bonface Mulyungi

Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, after both countries accused each other of violating separate ceasefires declared by each side to cover the celebrations of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

“This ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each country,” the US president said.Shortly afterwards Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Ukraine’s participation, while Russian state media also said Russia had agreed to the proposal.

Earlier both sides said the other had continued to attack their positions and Moscow’s mayor said the city had been targeted by drones overnight.

In his post Trump said he had personally requested the three-day truce and “I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy”.Putin had announced a ceasefire for 8-9 May ahead of Victory Day celebrations on Saturday. Kyiv had earlier called for an indefinite truce, starting 6 May.

Russia has warned Ukraine not to try to attack the Victory Day parade in Red Square. Its defence ministry has threatened to launch a “retaliatory, massive missile strike” on the centre of Kyiv if Moscow is attacked. It has warned foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital ahead of 9 May.

For the first time in nearly two decades there will be no military hardware at the parade, while the Russian capital is on high alert over the fears that Ukraine could try to disrupt the events.

Residents of Moscow and St Petersburg have also been warned their mobile internet access will be limited for security reasons. The celebrations used to bring large numbers of foreign guests to Moscow, but this time only the leaders of Belarus, Malaysia and Laos, and a few other dignitaries, will attend.

On Friday both sides accused the other of battlefield ceasefire violations. The Russian defence ministry said Ukraine was also striking civilian targets in border areas of the Kursk and Belgorod regions, close to the conflict zone. Russian armed forces provided a “mirror response” to the violations, the ministry added.

Meanwhile Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said some 20 drones had been downed near the city in just the first two hours of the ceasefire.

Ukrainian strikes were also reported on industrial sites in the Perm and Yaroslavl regions, as well as sites in the Rostov region and the Chechen capital Grozny.Thirteen airports in southern Russia also suspended operations after a drone attack.

Meanwhile Zelensky posted on Telegram that there had been more than 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions in the first few hours of the truce, and more than 850 drone strikes. The Ukrainian leader said his country would “act in kind”.

The war of words over ceasefires came after European Council President António Costa said he thought there was “potential” for the EU to negotiate with Russia over ending the war, and said they had Zelensky’s backing to do so.”I’m talking with the [EU’s] 27 national leaders to see the best way to organise ourselves and to identify what we need effectively to discuss with Russia when it comes to the right moment to do this,” he said in an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday.”We cannot change the geography. We are in Europe, we are neighbours of Russia, and of course we need to talk with them about the future of the security architecture of Europe,” he added.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded that Russia was ready for dialogue but “will not initiate such contacts ourselves”.

The US has mediated several rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine but so far without any breakthrough, and there are concerns that Washington is now distracted by the war in the Middle East.

Speaking on a visit to Italy on Friday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US was still prepared to mediate but did not want to waste time if progress was not being made.Zelensky said he expected US envoys to come to Kyiv in the next few weeks.

Separately Ukrainian emergency personnel are battling a huge wildfire in the exclusion zone at Chornobyl, known at the time of the nuclear disaster in the former Soviet Union by its Russian name, Chernobyl.

Strong winds, dry weather and landmines in some areas from the ongoing conflict are complicating efforts to control the blaze. Firefighters say it’s spreading rapidly – already covering some 11 sq km (4.2sq miles). The exclusion zone, in the Kyiv region, remains highly contaminated but the authorities say radiation in the area of the fire remains within the normal range.

Arteta rallies Arsenal for huge Premier League weekend

Stacy Boit,

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told his players and fans to “stay present and live the moment” as the club prepare for a huge month in which they could secure a Premier League and Champions League double.

The Gunners are five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand, at the top of the table and need three wins from their remaining three fixtures to claim a first league title in 22 years.

On Tuesday, they also reached their first Champions League final for 20 years with a 2-1 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid, and will face Paris St-Germain in Budapest on 30 May.

“We are closer and closer and everything that we do now is going to matter to win it or not,” said Arteta on Friday.

“Stay present, live the moment, prepare and show the same level of energy, hunger and desire that we have showed all season or more.”

Stokes strikes after eight balls on comeback

Stacy Boit,

Ben Stokes needed only eight deliveries to take a wicket in his first action since England’s dismal Ashes tour on the opening day of Durham’s County Championship match at Worcestershire.

Opening the bowling, the England captain had Worcestershire opener Dan Lategan caught behind from the second ball of his second over.

Later, with his first delivery after an hour-long break for rain, Stokes rushed through the defence of Adam Hose, who was bowled for 59.

Playing for the first time since the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney in January, Stokes bowled two spells of four overs and one of six – the latter either side of what was the second rain break of the day.

Overall, the all-rounder ended with figures of 2-40 from his 14 overs as Worcestershire reached 209-7 from the 66 overs that were possible.

That represented a recovery from 52-4 thanks to Hose and 41 by skipper Brett D’Oliveira.

Stokes was struck by a quad injury in the final Test of England’s 4-1 defeat in Australia.

On his return to the UK, the 34-year-old then suffered a horrific broken cheek when he was hit by a ball while coaching the Durham academy.

He required what he described as “pretty major facial surgery” and said he felt “lucky” to still be alive.

Stokes missed Durham’s first four matches of the season as he recovered, and had long identified the trip to New Road as his first action of the season in the build-up to England’s first Test against New Zealand, beginning on 4 June.

Stokes’ last match for Durham came almost two years ago against the same opponents, while his first match after being made Test captain in 2022 also came on this ground.

On this occasion, with fellow England international Matthew Potts rested after a heavy early season workload, Stokes was required to take the new ball for only the fifth time in his first-class career.

Looking lean and with a spring in his approach to the crease, Stokes immediately bowled with pace and extracted bounce from an encouraging surface.

Two balls into his second over, Stokes enticed left-hander Lategan to push at a back-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump, with a healthy edge held by wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson.

President Ruto to Grace Maseno School’s 120th Anniversary Celebration

By Bonface Mulyungi

President William Ruto today is expected to grace Maseno School’s 120th anniversary celebrations in Kisumu West, Kisumu County, igniting the historic equatorial institution’s bold renaissance with the unveiling of a transformative KSh 2 billion redevelopment masterplan.

Founded in 1906 by missionaries, the school—under the thunderous theme “Perseverance Shall Win Through”—is set for state-of-the-art labs, dormitories, sports facilities, and digital infrastructure to reclaim its place as a national academic powerhouse, drawing alumni and leaders to honor 120 years of unbroken excellence and leadership on this landmark day.

The Head of State is also expected to officially flag the groundbreaking of Maseno Affordable Housing at Maseno market and Maseno University student hostels.

Fernandes: The trophies, the assist record and his future

Stacy Boit,

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has not come close to winning the Premier League or Champions League since joining the club in 2020.

He did lift a couple of domestic cups under Erik ten Hag – and if United finish third this season, it will be a position they have only bettered once during Fernandes’ time at Old Trafford.

But it represents a meagre return for a player many argue is United’s best signing since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and someone, they argue, who deserves a place among the club’s best in the Premier League era.

On Friday, he was named the Football Writers’ Association’s footballer of the year. But Fernandes is not one for coveting individual awards.

When he spoke to the media in October, he said: “I don’t see it that one player is better than another because he wins more trophies. Not every time the best player in the world is the one that wins the Ballon d’Or.

“I want to win trophies. I want to be recognised by the many good things I did for the club, for bringing something back to the club, not just my individual numbers.”

United will not win a trophy this season, but there are still a couple of significant milestones ahead of Fernandes.

He needs just one more assist to equal the individual Premier League record of 20 in a single campaign – jointly held by Arsenal great Thierry Henry and former Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne.

Fernandes is eight clear of Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki in the Premier League’s assists chart this season, with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen third with 10 assists.

Beating the record clearly means a lot to Fernandes, who will be a key part of Portugal’s World Cup squad this summer. So much so, one of his United team-mates told him he felt Fernandes would previously have taken a shot against Brentford recently, rather than set up striker Benjamin Sesko. Fernandes rejected that notion.

Fernandes is also favourite to win the prestigious PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, which Henry and De Bruyne both took twice.

Despite the lack of major trophies, would the assist record and another player of the year award confirm his status as one of the most creative forces of the Premier League era?

At least 15 dead in West Pokot gold mine collapse as rescue operations continue

By Bonface Mulyungi

A rockfall at an informal artisanal gold mining site in Rumos Hills, Kacheliba Constituency, triggered a collapse on Thursday evening, killing at least 15 people, including 10 women, with fears that more miners remain trapped underground.

Emergency teams, including the Kenya Red Cross, local authorities, police, and community members, worked through the night and into Friday to recover bodies and search for survivors.

Rescuers used shovels and basic tools amid chaotic scenes as villagers rushed to the site.Kenya Red Cross reported that at least six people were rescued alive and taken to the hospital for treatment. Sounds were reportedly heard from beneath the rubble, raising slim hopes for additional survivors.

The agency noted earlier that 11 casualties had been accounted for, with three in critical condition referred to Kapenguria Referral Hospital.“We are continuing with the rescue operations. A stone fell on the section they were working on before collapsing the mine, leaving them trapped,” said Lopet Chief Isaac Lomwai.

Kapenguria Hospital doctor Caren Cheyech said the facility received several victims: “We have received about six patients, and two of them have serious injuries and have been taken for surgery. We are closely monitoring them and providing the necessary medical assistance.” The exact number of people in the mine at the time of the collapse remains unclear.

Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kipchumba Murkomen condemned illegal mining and launched investigations. He instructed security agencies to arrest those engaged in unlicensed commercial operations and warned against such activities, especially following repeated fatal incidents in West Pokot.

West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin had recently highlighted concerns over unsafe and illegal mining. The county has seen similar tragedies, including collapses in 2025 that killed several miners.Authorities have suspended all mining activities in the area to facilitate rescue efforts and prevent further risks.

Rescue operations were still underway as of Friday, with officials urging caution and calling for stronger regulations.

“I’m not sick” ODM leader Oburu Odinga breaks his silence amid public concern over his low profile

By Bonface Mulyungi

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has finally spoken out amid growing speculation surrounding his absence from the public eye, assuring Kenyans that he is healthy, active and still firmly in control of party affairs.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Friday, Oburu dismissed claims that he was unwell or politically inactive, saying his reduced public appearances were deliberate and aimed at allowing the party structure to function independently.“I want to thank Kenyans for their concern about my absence, and I want to assure them that I am up and about. I’m not abducted…I’m not sick…I’m quite okay,” said Oburu.

“It was just a bit of, not just rest, but also giving directions to our party here and there because our party was not absent…it is present fully, and it is doing its activities as normal.”The ODM leader said the party does not revolve around one individual, insisting its structures remain functional even in his absence.“Because we’re a structured party, we don’t depend on one person…we depend on the whole structure, and as long as it is functioning and things are working normally then I’m happy,” he said.

“Only if things are going wrong, then I come in very fast to negotiate and correct and move on. So I’m okay…I’m very okay…even this morning I was playing golf.”His remarks came after days of speculation triggered by his absence from public engagements, including the party’s three-day retreat in Mombasa where ODM leaders met to discuss party unity amid internal wrangles.

Earlier on Friday, Oburu had also posted photos and a video of himself playing golf on his official X account, captioned: “Up and grateful!”The appearance came hours after his office and ODM officials moved to dismiss reports in sections of the local media questioning his health and political relevance. In a statement, the Communications Department in Oburu’s office termed reports suggesting a decline in his health or grip on party affairs as “malicious” and “entirely divorced from the truth.”

The office maintained that Oburu’s recent low profile was part of a deliberate political strategy designed to allow younger leaders within the party to take up more visible leadership roles.

“We wish to reassure our supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that the Party Leader is in excellent health, sound mind, and continues to provide steady leadership to our movement,” the statement read.“Having mentored a formidable team of energetic leaders, he has made the conscious decision to take a ‘back seat’ in day-to-day partisan activities. The Leader’s recent shift in public profile is a result of a calculated and deliberate strategic transition.”

According to the statement, Oburu is now focused on providing ideological guidance and mentorship to the party leadership, leading sensitive pre-coalition negotiations, building political alliances and engaging in long-term policy and diplomatic consultations.ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale had also sought to calm public concern earlier in the day, saying the party leader was “very okay.”

“When people start questioning about the whereabouts of somebody, that tells you how important that person is. We take pride in that,” said Etale.
