By Were Kelly

A former police officer has been arrested for allegedly masterminding a sophisticated mobile money fraud scheme that targeted unsuspecting Kenyans through fake communications, identity theft, and SIM card manipulation.

The suspect, Amos Nzomo Kimanzi, appeared before Principle Magistrate Carolyn Mugo at Milimani law courts.Amos once served with the Kenya Police but now faces multiple charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act and the Prevention of Organized Crimes Act.

Investigators allege Kimanzi used the number +254 722 919 880—and others including +254 705 948 850—to contact victims under false identities, soliciting money and leveraging his law enforcement background to gain trust. He allegedly engaged in illegal SIM card swaps and subscriber identity fraud to evade detection, with some numbers registered using fake names and documentation.

Evidence recovered also links him to organized criminal activity, suggesting he may have been part of a larger network targeting mobile money users nationwide.

The probe began in June 2025 after the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) flagged suspicious mobile money activity to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Led by IP Nickson Kiunga, detectives traced fraudulent numbers to false registrations, uncovering a trail of swapped identities and SIM cards linked to multiple victims, including one registered to Talam Samson Kiprotich without his knowledge.

Digital forensic experts revealed a pattern of transactions and communication pointing to a months-long, coordinated fraud operation. The scope widened on July 4, 2025, when investigators confirmed the activities fit the profile of organized crime.

On August 11, 2025, at 9:00 p.m., DCI officers arrested Kimanzi in Nairobi’s Pipeline area. They seized multiple mobile phones and electronic devices, now undergoing forensic analysis to determine the full extent of the alleged scheme.

Magistrate Mugo directed that the case would be mentioned on 19th August alongside a similar matter ,where another suspect, Brian Kiprotich Ronoh is also expected to be in attendance. The complainant Samson Talaam was also directed to make an appearance in court.

Museveni’s ‘Grandchildren’ Rivals: Young Ugandans Join Growing List of 2026 Presidential Hopefuls

The race for Uganda’s 2026 presidential elections is beginning to draw a diverse and increasingly youthful pool of aspirants, reflecting a push for generational change in the country’s leadership.

Voniter Nassanga, 20, a student at Kampala International University, has declared her interest in contesting for the top seat. Her campaign, she says, will champion the rights of single mothers who continue to suffer from economic hardship and neglect by irresponsible men. Nassanga believes that women, especially young mothers, have been left out of the national conversation.

“I want to speak for the single mothers who continue to suffer in silence,” she said. “The youth deserve a real chance to shape Uganda’s future, and President Museveni should allow young people to lead.”

Deogratius Akampurira, 24, a law student at Uganda Pentecostal University from Rukungiri District, has also joined the race. He has called for President Yoweri Museveni’s resignation, accusing him of failing to address corruption during his 39 years in power.

“For nearly four decades, President Museveni has lamented about corruption instead of fighting it,” Akampurira said. “Uganda needs a leader who acts decisively, not one who simply complains.”

Ayeza Abigail Victoria, a 22-year-old university student who picked up nomination forms to contest in the upcoming general election. She is now one of the youngest aspirants in the race.

Ayeza revealed that her parents are unhappy with her decision, citing the risks of political life, but she says she is motivated by a deep desire for meaningful change.

“What motivated me is that as we grow older, we wish the best for our society. If I want to see a difference in my country, I must be the difference,” she said. “I am not being funded by anyone. I am funding myself. I am going for signatures as I lay the foundation for my campaign.”

She will be joined on the ballot by Jorine Najjemba, a 20-year-old Senior Six vacist from Nkowe, whose campaign slogan is “An Open Door to a New Uganda for Everyone.”

They join an expanding list of young Ugandans eyeing the presidency, which includes other under-30 aspirants who have positioned themselves as voices for transparency, economic opportunity, and social justice.

Many of these candidates argue that the nation’s leadership has stagnated under the current political establishment, and that the future lies in the hands of a new generation.

FKF President Urges Fans Without Valid Tickets to Support Team at Home

By Michelle Ndaga

FKF President Hussein Mohammed has issued a clear warning to football supporters: if you don’t have an original e-ticket obtained through official platforms, do not attempt to enter Kasarani Stadium. Instead, he urged fans to cheer on the team from home.

This reminder follows the chaotic scenes witnessed during previous matches, where many fans holding what seemed like valid tickets were denied entry, having unknowingly bought duplicated or bulk-resold tickets. Without proper access, these supporters attempted to force entry, creating security risks and crowd disorder.

To avoid a repeat of those incidents, Mohammed emphasized that only authentic e-tickets purchased through official channels will be honoured at the gates. He called on fans to support the Harambee Stars responsibly, whether inside the stadium or from their homes.

Kenya and Iran Establish Joint Committee to Resolve Tea Ban Within 60 Days

By Ian Maleve

Kenya and Iran have formed a joint technical committee to address and resolve the suspension of Kenyan tea exports to the Iranian market, aiming to lift the ban within a 60-day timeframe.

The move follows high-level discussions between officials from both countries, signaling renewed diplomatic and trade cooperation.

The tea export ban, which has been in place for several months, stemmed from what Iranian authorities cited as regulatory concerns and quality control issues.

However, Kenyan officials have consistently maintained that the country’s tea meets international standards and suggested that the embargo may have been influenced by wider trade dynamics.

The formation of the joint committee marks a significant breakthrough. It comprises representatives from Kenya’s Agriculture and Trade Ministries, the Tea Board of Kenya, and their Iranian counterparts in the Ministries of Commerce and Agriculture.

The committee has been tasked with resolving all technical and administrative hurdles that have impeded the free flow of Kenyan tea into Iran.

Kenya, which is the world’s largest exporter of black tea, counts Iran among its key Middle Eastern markets. The embargo has led to a noticeable dip in export volumes to the region, impacting earnings for Kenyan farmers and processors.

According to government data, tea exports to Iran had generated billions of shillings annually before the suspension took effect.

The new agreement follows a recent trade mission led by senior Kenyan officials to Tehran, during which both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade.

The 60-day timeline is viewed as an ambitious but achievable target, with both sides pledging transparency and cooperation throughout the review process.

Kenya’s tea industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the talks will yield a swift resolution. With the committee’s inaugural meeting scheduled in the coming days, attention is now focused on how quickly a consensus can be reached to resume shipments and stabilize trade flows between the two nations.
