Ukraine Top Officials Arrested Over Corruption in Military Drone Tenders

Ukrainian authorities have arrested several officials, including a prominent MP, amid an ongoing crackdown on corruption linked to the procurement of drones and electronic warfare systems.

The anti-corruption agencies revealed a large-scale bribery scheme involving inflated contracts, with prices marked up by as much as 30%.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the developments on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the involvement of the MP, district and city officials, and members of the National Guard. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and praised the agencies for their efforts. “We will not allow corruption to undermine our progress,” he stated.

The anti-corruption agencies’ independence was restored just days ago following mass protests across the country. The move reversed a controversial bill introduced by Zelensky’s government that sought to weaken the agencies’ authority, sparking massive demonstrations—the largest since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Critics argued the legislation threatened Ukraine’s efforts to combat corruption and align with European standards.

In response to public outcry, Zelensky swiftly proposed and secured parliament’s approval for a bill restoring the agencies’ independence. This decision was widely praised, including by Ukraine’s Defence Ministry’s intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, who thanked the president for listening to the public.

Ukraine’s anti-corruption efforts are crucial for its bid to join the European Union. The creation of Nabu and Sap in 2014 was a condition set by the EU and IMF, leading to Ukraine’s recent EU candidate status in 2022.

These bodies have conducted significant investigations, including a high-profile case in 2023 involving a $3 million bribe linked to Ukraine’s Supreme Court.

Myanmar Military Court Hands Life Sentences to Chinese Nationals in Human Trafficking Crackdown

Myanmar’s military courts have sentenced 12 individuals, including five Chinese nationals, to life imprisonment for their involvement in a series of human trafficking cases, state media reported on Saturday.

According to the Myanma Alinn newspaper, the convictions cover a wide range of offenses including the production and online distribution of sex videos and the trafficking of Myanmar women into forced marriages in China.

In one case heard in Yangon on July 29, two Chinese nationals, Lin Te and Wang Xiaofeng, were among five people sentenced to life in prison for filming sex videos involving three Myanmar couples and profiting from their online circulation. The group was convicted under Myanmar’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law.

In a separate ruling, the same court handed life sentences to three Chinese men, Yibo, Cao Qiu Quan and Chen Huan, alongside a Myanmar woman, for attempting to smuggle two Myanmar women, recently married to two of the convicted Chinese nationals, into China.

Another military court sentenced three more individuals to life for selling a woman as a bride in China and attempting to traffic a second.

Separately, a woman from the Magway region received a 10-year prison term on July 30 for planning to sell two Myanmar women into forced marriages in China.

The crackdown comes amid persistent concerns over the trafficking of women and girls from conflict ridden regions of Myanmar. The country has remained in turmoil since the military coup in February 2021, with civil conflict driving widespread displacement and vulnerability.

A 2018 study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Kachin Women’s Association Thailand (KWAT) estimated that 21,000 women and girls from northern Myanmar were trafficked into marriages in China between 2013 and 2017.

While COVID-19 and border restrictions initially slowed trafficking reports, KWAT warned of a resurgence in 2024 as more people migrate to China seeking work. Authorities have documented 80 trafficking cases so far this year, 34 involving cross border elements linked to China.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has promised a substantial bonus for the Taifa Stars at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.

While she was absent from the opening ceremony, her message of support was clear: a promise of nearly $400,000 (approximately 1 billion Tanzanian shillings) if the team emerges victorious in the tournament.

The unprecedented pledge has invigorated the squad, with national coach Hemed Suleiman expressing confidence that it will boost their performance. “This isn’t just another tournament. It’s a chance to make history. Thanks to this promise, every player feels even more invested,” he said.

Tanzania kicked off their campaign in style with a convincing 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam. The win has set a positive tone for the Taifa Stars, fueling their ambitions of claiming their first-ever CHAN title. The team’s determination is reinforced by the government’s efforts to create an environment conducive to success, including improved training facilities and robust logistical support.

As the tournament marks the first time CHAN is hosted in East Africa, the host nation is eager to shine on home soil. The generous bonus from the presidency underscores the importance placed on the national team’s performance and their desire to leave a lasting legacy.

With a strong start and high motivation, Tanzania is aiming to make history in this landmark edition of CHAN. Ruto, Sonko Promise Ksh 1 Billion Record Bonuses if Harambee Stars Win CHAN 2024

President William Ruto has dramatically raised the stakes for Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, just hours before the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with the team at Pullman Hotel in Nairobi, President Ruto pledged a performance-based bonus package worth up to Sh600 million if the team wins the tournament with a perfect record.

“I have decided to triple the original bonus structure to bring your potential earnings to Sh600 million,” Ruto said, drawing loud applause from players and officials. “It’s time to give your all.”

Under the revised structure, each player will receive Sh1 million for every win, and Sh500,000 for a draw. Kenya’s squad of 40 players and technical staff could earn up to Sh280 million for a perfect run in the group stages.

Additional bonuses include Sh60 million for reaching the quarterfinals, Sh70 million for the semifinals, and Sh90 million for making it to the final.

Though the bonus for winning the final was not specified, projections suggest that a tournament victory with a flawless record would push total payouts beyond Sh600 million.

In a show of support, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko added that he would personally top up Sh400 million if the team clinches the title. “This is not just a promise. it’s a pledge to support our boys all the way,” Sonko said in a statement.

Kenya is co-hosting this year’s CHAN tournament with Uganda and Tanzania. The opening match kicks off tonight in Dar es Salaam, with hosts Tanzania taking on Burkina Faso.

Harambee Stars will play their first match on Sunday against the Democratic Republic of Congo at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

President Ruto also called on Kenyans to unite behind the national team: “This month, our only party is Harambee Stars,” he said. “This is our time to shine. Both as hosts and champions.”

The final is scheduled for August 30 at Kasarani Stadium.

Callum Wilson Joins West Ham on One-Year Deal After Newcastle Exit

West Ham United have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of veteran striker Callum Wilson on a one-year deal, following his release from Newcastle United at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old forward, who spent four years at St. James’ Park, joins the Hammers as a free agent and brings with him a wealth of Premier League experience and a proven goal-scoring record.

Wilson made 130 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, scoring 49 goals, but saw his minutes limited in recent seasons due to recurring injuries. Last term, he managed just three starts from 22 appearances, prompting the Magpies not to renew his contract.

Despite that, West Ham have moved swiftly to snap up the striker in a bid to add depth and experience to their front line. The former Bournemouth man has made 239 appearances in the Premier League overall, notching up 88 goals. His best season came in 2022-23 when he hit the back of the net 18 times, finishing fifth in the race for the Golden Boot.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Wilson expressed his excitement at joining the East London outfit.

“I’m excited to be joining a massive football club like West Ham,” he said. “A club that shares a similar passion to mine – hard work, dedication, and the hunger for success.”

“There’s real talent in this squad, and the gaffer’s come in with a clear vision. We all want to push together and finish as high as possible this season.”

The England international could make his West Ham debut on August 16 when the Hammers take on newly promoted Sunderland in their Premier League opener.

West Ham fans will hope Wilson can rediscover his scoring touch and provide the firepower needed in what is shaping up to be a competitive season.

Invisible Killers: Microplastics Found in Your Home and Car Air, Study Warns

A startling new study has revealed that thousands of invisible microplastic particles, small enough to lodge deep into human lungs are floating in the air we breathe every day, especially in our homes and cars.

Published this week in the journal PLOS One, the study found that adults may inhale up to 68,000 microplastic particles daily from indoor environments, far more than previously estimated.

The microscopic fragments come from everyday plastic-filled items like carpets, curtains, furniture, textiles, and even the plastic parts inside vehicles.

“People spend an average of 90% of their time indoors, homes, workplaces, shops, transportation, all the while they are exposed to microplastic pollution through inhalation without even thinking about it,” said lead researchers Jeroen Sonke and Nadiia Yakovenko in a joint statement quoted by CNN.

The research team used Raman microscopy, an advanced technique capable of detecting particles as small as 1 micrometer, to analyze air samples from apartments and cars in France. In a troubling comparison, the study found that car interiors were more contaminated than homes, registering 2,238 particles per cubic meter versus 528 indoors.

Car cabins were described as “significant sources of microplastic exposure” due to their enclosed nature and high plastic content, including dashboards, seat covers, and carpetswhich shed particles through heat, friction, and wear over time.

Experts have warned that prolonged exposure to microplastics may increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, hormone disruption, infertility, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer. These tiny particles have already been found in human blood, lungs, breast milk, placenta, and even brain tissue.

Sherri “Sam” Mason, a leading microplastics researcher who was not involved in the study, told CNN: “This adds to the body of knowledge we have that microplastics are everywhere and getting into humans in every way imaginable.”

While the American Chemistry Council questioned the study’s sample size and contamination control, other scientists like Columbia University chemist Wei Min defended the method, saying it offered “sound analysis.”

Experts suggest simple ways to limit exposure — avoiding single-use plastics, using cloth bags, switching to glass food containers, and reducing time in enclosed plastic-filled spaces like cars.

As Sonke and Yakovenko concluded: “Our findings show that the everyday indoor environment where we spend most of our time can be a major source of human exposure.”

Mourners Demand Justice as Slain Emali Protester Buried in Makueni

Emotions ran high in Makutano village, Nguu/Masumba Ward, on Saturday as hundreds turned out to mourn Garshon Mutisya Mwove, the 33-year-old father gunned down by police during anti-government protests in Emali on June 25.

The heartbreaking ceremony offered not only a final farewell, but also a platform for leaders to condemn what they called a pattern of state brutality and demand accountability.

Mutisya, described as a loving father to his young son Samuel Muuo, was the only child of Mwove Kiyili and Josephine Masai. His untimely death has left a deep void in the family and community.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., visibly emotional, decried the killing as a “national shame” and vowed to pursue justice.

He pledged government support to the grieving family, including a job for Mutisya’s widow and education sponsorship for his sister.

Senator Daniel Maanzo joined in the calls for judicial impartiality, especially in cases involving youth arrested during the protests, some of whom are facing charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Also present were former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, MCAs Kyalo Mumo (Tulimani) and Daniel Kivuva Musau (Nguu/Masumba), along with Devolution CECM Nicholas Nzioka.

Top Somali Intelligence Officer Killed in Mogadishu

A senior officer in Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) was found dead Thursday night under mysterious circumstances in Mogadishu, deepening fears of internal sabotage and infiltration within the country’s top intelligence institution.

Abukar Muhiyaadin Ahmed, 31, head of NISA’s intelligence directorate for Mogadishu, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in the Siigaale neighborhood after reportedly leading a unit on a covert operation targeting a suspected al-Shabab operative. The suspect reportedly escaped, and gunfire ensued shortly thereafter.

Local residents found Ahmed’s body and alerted authorities. Witnesses say he appeared to have been shot multiple times and bled to death at the scene. While the federal government has yet to release a formal statement, intelligence sources say Ahmed was preparing to brief President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday regarding the March 18 roadside bombing targeting the presidential convoy.

In the wake of his death, several NISA officers who accompanied Ahmed during the mission have been detained for questioning. Internal sources suggest Ahmed may have been deliberately silenced due to sensitive intelligence he had uncovered.

The case has revived long-standing concerns about al-Shabab infiltration within NISA. In 2021, the mysterious disappearance of NISA officer Ikran Tahlil sparked nationwide uproar — a case that remains unresolved to this day.

Ahmed’s killing now casts a dark shadow over Somalia’s intelligence apparatus and raises fresh alarms about internal threats undermining the country’s fragile security progress.

Messi Bodyguard Suspended After Heated Inter Miami–Atlas Clash in Leagues Cup

A dramatic finish to the Leagues Cup clash between Inter Miami and Atlas has sparked controversy, following a post-match scuffle that saw Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, enter the pitch in violation of tournament rules.

The match, played on July 30 at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, ended with a 2-1 victory for Inter Miami. The decisive stoppage-time goal by Marcelo Weigandt, assisted by Lionel Messi, was initially disallowed before being overturned by VAR, igniting tensions between players and staff from both sides.

During the tense post-match handshake, Cheuko — dressed in a black Inter Miami t-shirt — entered the field without official credentials, reportedly shoving Atlas defender Jorge San Martín while attempting to separate clashing players. A video of the moment has since gone viral, drawing widespread criticism.

On Friday, the Leagues Cup disciplinary committee confirmed Cheuko’s suspension for the remainder of the tournament and fined Inter Miami an undisclosed amount for “improper conduct.”

Atlas defender Matheus Doria condemned the interference, stating: “Messi’s bodyguard is there to protect him from fans, not get involved with players. He doesn’t have that permission.”

Cheuko, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, was hired by Inter Miami in 2023, reportedly handpicked by club president David Beckham to safeguard Messi. This is not his first controversy — in April 2025, Inter Miami restricted his pitch-side access after he tackled a teenage fan during an MLS match.

The incident raises fresh concerns about the blurred lines between security and sport.

Tanzania Begin CHAN PAMOJA 2024 with Confident Win Over Burkina Faso

Tanzania made a dream start to their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso on Saturday night at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

In front of an electric home crowd, the Taifa Stars dominated large portions of the Group B encounter to secure their first-ever opening win in a CHAN tournament, having lost their previous two curtain-raisers.

Abdul Sopu opened the scoring with a composed penalty in first-half stoppage time after Clement Mzize was brought down by Frank Tologo. Sopu calmly sent goalkeeper Ladji Sanou the wrong way to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Burkina Faso made three changes at the break in search of a response, introducing experienced campaigners Patrick Malo and Yves Koutiama. But Tanzania remained on the front foot and doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when defender Mohamed Hussein met a pinpoint cross from Mudathir Yahya with a powerful header.

Despite late pressure from the West Africans, including efforts from Tertius Bagré and Papus Ouattara, they were unable to find a breakthrough, extending their run without a win in CHAN opening fixtures to four.

The result places Tanzania in a strong position in a challenging group that also features Burundi and the Central African Republic.

The Taifa Stars will now seek to build on this momentum in their next outing, while Burkina Faso face a must-win scenario if they hope to progress beyond the group stage for the first time.
