Taliban Don’t Recognise Women On Afghan Olympic Team: Sport Official

Afghanistan’s Taliban government does not recognise the three female athletes who will represent the country at the Paris Olympic Games this month, a spokesman for their sports department said.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has invited a squad of six Afghan athletes — three women and three men — in consultation with Afghanistan’s largely exiled national Olympic committee.

“Only three athletes are representing Afghanistan,” said Atal Mashwani, the spokesman of the Taliban government’s sports directorate, referring to the male competitors.

“Currently, in Afghanistan girls’ sports have been stopped. When girls’ sport isn’t practiced, how can they go on the national team?” he told AFP.

All three of the women and two of the male athletes are living outside Afghanistan.

The only one training in the country is a judo fighter, whilst his squad mates will feature in athletics and swimming.

The women will compete in athletics and cycling.

The IOC said it had not consulted Taliban officials about the team and they were not invited to the games.

Spokesman Mark Adams last month confirmed Afghanistan’s national Olympic committee — including the president and secretary-general who are both living in exile — remain “its sole interlocutors for the preparation and participation of the Afghan team”.

But Afghan committee CEO Dad Mohammad Payenda Akhtari, who is still in the country, said whilst female athletes were organised abroad, his committee coordinated with Taliban authorities over the male ones.

Mashwani claimed the government was supporting them with training and scholarships.

“We only take the responsibility for three male athletes participating in the Olympics,” he told AFP.

The participants will compete under the black, red and green flag of the old Western-backed government which crumbled after the withdrawal of US troops three years ago.

Since surging back to power in 2021, the Taliban government has enforced curbs squeezing women out of sport as well as secondary schools and universities.

The United Nations has described the restrictions as “gender apartheid”.

The IOC banned Afghanistan from the games in 1999, during the first period of Taliban rule between 1996 and 2001 when women were also barred from sport.

Afghanistan was reinstated after the Taliban were ousted by the post-9/11 invasion, but the Paris games mark the first summer Olympics since their return.

This time the IOC has taken a different approach — approving the Afghan team under a system ensuring all 206 nations are represented, in cases where athletes wouldn’t otherwise qualify.

DR Congo Military Court Sentences 22 Soldiers To Death

A military court in the volatile east of DR Congo sentenced 22 soldiers to death on Monday for “fleeing the enemy” during fighting with M23 rebels, a lawyer told AFP.

Sixteen soldiers were handed death sentences in one case in the North Kivu province, and six others in a separate case, coming just days after 25 soldiers received a similar judgment.

The latest sentences come as M23 rebels, which Kinshasha accuses Rwanda of backing, last week seized new terrain on the northern front of the conflict that has been ongoing for two-and-a-half years in the North Kivu province.

A military court condemned 16 people in one case in the court in North Kivu.

The prosecution had asked on Saturday that 22 people in the case be condemned to death.

But the court on Monday instead handed down 10-year prison sentences to three defendants and acquitted three other people.

In a separate case examined and judged on Monday in North Kivu six of the seven defendants were sentenced to death and one person was acquitted, lawyer Jules Muvweko told AFP.

Last Wednesday, a court sentenced 25 soldiers to death during a one day trial for also ‘fleeing the enemy’, lawyers said.

Since the end of 2021, the M23 rebels have conquered vast swathes of territory in the province, nearly completely encircling the provincial capital of Goma.

Wiper Party Demands Release of Makueni MCA Allegedly Abducted

The Wiper Party has written to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome demanding the release of Makueni County nominated MCA Assembly Abanas Wambua.

In the letter on Monday, July 8, the Wiper party claimed that the nominated MCA was abducted by police officers on Sunday morning and forced into a vehicle that headed towards Mombasa County.

The Kalonzo Musyoka-led party noted that Wambua’s abduction has caused distress among his family, coworkers, and friends.

“Hon. Abanas Wambua, alias Councillor Kana, the Nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) – Makindu Ward, was abducted by police personnel in Makindu on Saturday morning and forced into a car that sped away towards Mombasa County. Hon Wambua’s whereabouts have been unclear for the past 48 hours, causing distress among his family, coworkers, and friends,” read the letter in part.

The Azimio affiliated party condemned Wambua’s abduction saying it was a gross violation of human rights and equivalent to arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearance as prohibited under Article 29 of the Constitution.

“We demand that Hon. Wambua be released immediately and returned to his family in Makindu, Makueni County. We also demand that the government immediately end these illegal actions and release all others who have been arbitrarily arrested,” Wiper added.

The party further warned IG Koome against all forms of arbitrary arrest and detention of members of the public by security agencies.

Wiper said they would hold the Police IG responsible for any harm that has occurred on the nominated MCA.

“We shall hold you personally responsible for everything and any harm that has occurred to Hon. Wambua,” Wiper stated.

Graft case against ex-Governor Obado adjourned to tomorrow

The fraud case against former Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado was today adjourned to tomorrow after it appeared that the prosecution had not supplied key prosecution documents to the defence.

The former Migori boss appeared before Magistrate Victor Wakhumile at Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for the hearing of Ksh1.98B corruption case.

In the case, Obado is charged alongside 15 other accused persons including his four children over the alleged theft of public funds and conflict of interest in Migori County Government when Obado was the Governor.

According to Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission, 59 witnesses have been lined up to testify before the court in a bid to prove the case against the accused persons.

EACC undertook investigations in the case after receiving allegations that Migori County Government had made suspicious payments to multiple companies, totalling Ksh.1.98 billion.

However, after investigations, most payments were found to have been lawfully made in respect to executed contracts whose works were confirmed in a verification exercise while payments amounting to Ksh.235 million remained unexplained thus deemed to have been fraudulently acquired from the County Government.

The unexplained amount, which the Commission found to be proceeds of corruption, including kickbacks directly sent by some companies to foreign universities as school fees for Obado’s children as well as high-end properties purchased for the family by the said contractors, have since been recovered through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), following a civil recovery suit filed at the High Court.

NEMA Bans Use of Garbage Bags and Bin Liners, Effective in 90 Days

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a notice prohibiting the use of trash bags and bin liners, and it will go into force in 90 days.

“The Authority hereby directs that within 90 days from the date of this notice: All organic waste generated by households, private sector and public sector institutions, religious institutions, private and public functions and events; shall strictly be segregated and placed in 100% biodegradable garbage bags/ bin liners only,” said NEMA.

“The waste collected in 1 above shall be collected separately (not mixed with other waste types) and transported to a designated Material Recovery Facility for further processing,” NEMA added.

Additionally, NEMA demanded that the collection of organic waste no longer be done using traditional plastic bags or bin liners.

It is mandated that all County Governments and NEMA-licensed private trash management providers only offer 100% biodegradable garbage bags and bin liners to their clients.

In 2017, the Kenyan government, acting through the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, outlawed the production, importation, and use of plastic carrier bags and flat bags intended for use in domestic and commercial packaging through Gazette Notice Nos. 2334 and 2356. Bin liners and trash bags were among them.

All public and private sector institutions must separate non-hazardous garbage into organic and non-organic fractions, according to Section 12 of the Sustainable garbage Management Act, 2022.

Furthermore, according to this clause, the separated garbage must be put in appropriately labelled, color-coded bins, containers, and bags. That all waste service providers should gather, manage, and deliver waste that has been separated.
