E-commerce Giant Copia Faces Complete Shutdown After Mass Layoffs

Copia Global, a once-promising Kenyan B2B e-commerce platform, appears to be on the brink of collapse after reportedly laying off its remaining 1,500 employees.

This follows an initial round of cuts that exceeded 1,000 employees just two weeks ago.

Copia’s downfall has been swift and dramatic. Launched in 2012 and boasting a healthy fundraising history of $123 million across eight rounds, the company began experiencing financial difficulties in 2023.

In July, Copia laid off over 850 employees across Kenya and Uganda, citing economic downturn and limited access to capital. Despite a December 2023 Series C extension round worth $20 million, the company’s struggles persisted.

In an attempt to revive its fortunes, Copia partnered with Visa and launched a mobile app campaign in November 2023. However, these efforts failed to generate sufficient sales. Additionally, the company faced administrative challenges that delayed salary payments for May employees, further eroding trust.

Administration and Uncertain Future

Facing insolvency, Copia entered administration in late May, with KPMG partners Makenzi Muthusi and Julius Ngonga overseeing the process. While the administrators aimed to implement a cost-cutting strategy and restore profitability, the complete workforce layoff casts a dark shadow on Copia’s future.

The complete shutdown of the platform seems imminent, leaving investors, creditors, and former employees facing significant losses. The Kenyan e-commerce market will also feel the impact, losing a major player and its contribution to the sector’s growth.

Madtraxx Wife Shares Horrifying Domestic Abuse Ordeal

George Mugai, also known as Madtraxx, is accused of serious domestic abuse by his wife of five years, Salma Hussein.

Salma took to Instagram to share her harrowing experience, posting photos of bruises and a doctor’s report from 2021 detailing the extent of the alleged abuse.

Salma’s post paints a bleak picture of her life over the last decade, when the two were together.

“Never have I thought I’ll be beaten in my life… but I married an animal!! Y’all superstar MADTRAXX!!… My whole life I’m battling anxiety, fear, and trauma!! Just because of this guy !!#10 years with a woman abuser!!”

The doctor’s report she shared mentions bruising on her upper limbs, knees, and scratch marks on her left leg, implying that the abuse has been going on for years.

In stark contrast to the current situation, Madtraxx had posted a loving tribute to his wife, writing, “Happy Anniversary to US MY Love! Five years is such a blessing. I love having you as my Queen on this journey. “I love you.”

The former Kansoul member and Salma married in a lavish private ceremony in 2018, which was attended by close family and friends, including their two daughters.

Salma’s candid revelation shattered the public image of a happy marriage, exposing the dark reality she claims to have endured behind closed doors.

PSSS Unveils Strategic Plan to Secure Financial Future of Public Servants

The Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS) has officially launched its strategic plan for 2023-2027, with a clear focus on safeguarding the financial well-being of Kenya’s public employees.

The plan was unveiled today at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) by Mr. Felix Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service.

“This strategic plan marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to ensuring the financial stability of our public servants,” declared Mr. Koskei.

He emphasized the significance of pensions, highlighting how they provide a steady income stream for retirees and contribute to Kenya’s economic development by fueling investments in the stock market and real estate.

National Treasury Underscores Support for Robust Retirement System

The launch event also featured remarks from PS Treasury Chris Kiptoo, who reaffirmed the National Treasury’s role as the PSSS sponsor. Kiptoo emphasized the Treasury’s dedication to fostering a robust retirement benefits industry in Kenya.

Kiptoo pointed to the National Retirement Benefits Policy 2023 and the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) as key measures undertaken by the Treasury to support the industry. The Policy aims to establish a coordinated framework, while the RBA works to ensure the sound management of retirement schemes and the protection of member benefits.

The CS highlighted the significant growth of the Kenyan pension system in recent years, with assets under administration by pension schemes surpassing KSh.1.7 trillion by December 2023.

The launch of the PSSS Strategic Plan 2023-2027 marks a significant step forward in aligning with the government’s vision for economic progress and prosperity. This strategic roadmap paves the way for guaranteeing financial security and overall well-being for Kenya’s public servants after retirement.

New Police Reforms To Cost KSh.108 Billion

An estimated KSh.108 billion will be required between 2024 and 2028 to implement reforms to the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, and NYS.

Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo emphasised the need for teamwork during a roundtable discussion with foreign development partners and donors, providing guests with an update on the reforms’ progress and strategic framework.

Four strategic key areas for implementation have been identified by a team working on the Chief Justice (Rtd) David Maraga Taskforce Report’s Implementation and Coordination Framework.

The four areas that have been highlighted are operational readiness and logistical capacity; human resource management and development; institutional capacity development; and leadership, oversight, and accountability.

The team’s objectives are to fortify the three security agencies and offer an integrated approach to reform priorities in order to provide the public with effective and efficient services.

In addition, the group will create comprehensive welfare policies, conduct training, safeguard human rights, combat sexual harassment and gender-based violence, improve gender mainstreaming, automate human resource tasks, and implement modernization projects.

Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco emphasised that help is largely needed for infrastructure development, which the CJ (Rtd) David Maraga Taskforce report recognised as a critical concern.

Kenya Vision 2030, Kenya Constitution, United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, African Union Agenda 2063, East Africa Community Vision 2050, and Fourth Medium-Term Plan 2023–2027 are all taken into consideration by the strategic framework.

France To Help Kenya Modernize Meteorological Services

Kenya and France are strengthening their long-standing partnership in the fight against climate change.

A recent meeting between H.E. Arnaud Suquet, the French Ambassador to Kenya, and Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya, focused on existing collaborations and exploring new avenues for cooperation.

A key area of focus is the modernization of Kenya’s meteorological services. This upgrade aims to empower the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) to deliver timely and accurate weather forecasts and climate data.

This vital information is crucial for ensuring public safety, protecting property, and safeguarding the environment.

The modernization effort is particularly relevant in the face of increasingly extreme weather events and climate shifts. These changes have already caused significant damage and loss of life in Kenya.

By providing better weather prediction capabilities, the KMD can help communities prepare for and mitigate the impact of these events.

Building on a Strong Foundation

The Kenya-France partnership on climate change boasts a proven track record. One successful example is a French government-backed initiative for forest fire communication and reduction. This initiative highlights the effectiveness of their collaborative approach.

The meeting also underscored the urgency of scaling up global climate finance. Kenya and France are joining forces to advocate for a more robust and inclusive global climate financing framework. This framework aims to secure increased financial resources, including contributions from the private sector, to tackle climate challenges on a global scale.

The participation of Dr. Pacifica Ogolla, the Ministry’s Climate Change Director, virtually in the meeting signifies Kenya’s commitment to tackling climate change from a multi-faceted approach. The collaboration with France strengthens Kenya’s efforts and paves the way for innovative solutions to address the pressing climate crisis.

Chelsea Boost Defense with Fulham’s Adarabioyo Signing

Chelsea FC has secured the signing of defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer, bringing the 26-year-old back to familiar territory in a four-year deal.

Adarabioyo, a former Manchester City academy prospect, will officially join the Blues when his contract with Fulham expires at the end of June.

This homecoming is fueled by Adarabioyo’s ambition for European competition. Having secured a Europa Conference League spot for next season, Chelsea offered the chance to chase continental glory, something that reportedly swayed Adarabioyo despite Fulham’s attempt to retain him with a lucrative contract offer.

“Chelsea is a massive club, and this feels like a full circle moment for me,” Adarabioyo said, highlighting the personal significance of the move.

“Being born just three miles from Stamford Bridge and having made my professional debut there, it’s incredibly exciting. I’m looking forward to contributing and pushing the club forward.”

The Blues are looking to Adarabioyo for more than just his defensive presence. Alongside the arrival of set-piece specialist coach Bernardo Cueva from Brentford, Adarabioyo’s strengths in both attacking and defending set-pieces are expected to bolster Chelsea’s performance in these crucial moments.

This signing could also trigger a domino effect within Chelsea’s defense. With Adarabioyo’s arrival potentially offering more depth, academy defender Trevoh Chalobah might be shown the exit door. Reports suggest Chelsea is open to selling Chalobah this summer, with Manchester United emerging as a potential destination.

The news comes alongside the confirmed departure of veteran defender Thiago Silva, who will be returning to his home country club Fluminense at the age of 39.

Overall, Chelsea seems to be strategically reshaping their defensive unit. Adarabioyo’s free transfer provides a cost-effective option with the potential for European experience to ignite his talents.

The addition of set-piece specialist Cueva further emphasizes Chelsea’s focus on improving their performance in these situations. How these changes impact the defensive dynamic and potential departures like Chalobah’s will be interesting storylines to follow as the transfer window unfolds.

Former Pipeline MD Charles Tanui Acquitted in Sh 644 Million Fraud Case

The court acquitted former Kenya Pipeline managing director Charles Tanui and fifteen others of conspiring to defraud the parastatal of Sh644 million.

Anti-corruption Magistrate Felix Kombo stated that the conspiracy charge was not established and that it could not exist without an agreement between the accused.

He stated that there was no evidence in their respective roles that the accused persons had a common intention to defraud the Kenya Pipeline Company.

However, the court determined that some of the accused face additional fraud-related charges.
The case involves a tender from Aero Dispenser Valves Company Limited for the supply of Hydrant Puit Valves, including Under Hydrant Valves, as well as two years of operational spares.

The suspects were charged in December 2018 with wasting public funds on the purchase of 58 Hydrant Pit Valves to replace faulty ones at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Gatundu MP Kagombe Denies Murder Charges; Released On Ksh2 Million Bond

Gatundu MP Gabriel Kagombe has been released on a Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail with a surety of the same amount.

Kagombe was released after pleading not guilty to murder charges in Machakos’ High Court on Friday.

He appeared before Judge Francis Olel, who had previously ordered that he undergo a mental assessment before entering a plea.

“The court has considered applications by both the prosecution and defence lawyers and hereby orders that the accused person be released on Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail and surety of a similar amount,” Olel stated.

Olel ordered that the MP appear in court on July 17, 2024.

The MP has been in police cells for about two weeks after being detained for the suspected murder of a bodaboda operator in the Thika sub-county.

The MP was originally arraigned before the same Judge last week, where he was charged with murder in violation of sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code.

Kangombe was represented by a team of attorneys.

Before Olel issued his decision, the prosecution filed a plea with the court to prevent the accused individual access to Thika Town, where the deceased lived.

In response, the defence counsel argued that their client should be granted reasonable bail terms because he was not a flight risk.
