IG Kanja Establishes 5 New Police Stations

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has established five new police stations across the country to enhance security and policing services.

In a gazette notice dated Friday, March 27, IG Kanja designated Gataka Police Station in Kajiado North, Otonglo Police Station in Kisumu West, and Mabera Police Station in Kuria West as new police stations.

The IG also designated Lagbogol Police Station in Wajir East and Thuura Police Station in Imenti East as new stations.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 40 (1) of the National Police Service Act, the Inspector-General designate the establishments particulars of which are set out in the Schedule hereto to be a Station for the purpose of this Act,” read the notice in part.

The announcement comes months after the police chief named the five new police stations and police posts.

In a notice on Friday, January 23, Kanja said the designations were made under powers granted to the Inspector-General by section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act.

The police IG also announced the establishment of Kamuguga Police Station in Kiambu County.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 40 (1) of the National Police Service Act, the Inspector-General designates various establishments particulars of which are set out in the Schedule hereto, to be Police Station or Post, for the purpose of this Act,” the notice read.

In June 2026, IG Kanja gazetted three new police stations in Nairobi and Turkana counties.

The Police IG established the Utalii Police Station in Ruaraka Sub-County, Nairobi County.

Kanja further established Oropoi Police Station and Loreng Police Post, both within Turkana West Sub-county, Turkana County.

A police station serves as the administrative and command hub for all police services. Each station is responsible for registering victims of crime and violence within its jurisdiction and establishing support mechanisms for them.

The Police stations are headed by an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and are also equipped with holding cells, an armory, and operational vehicles.

President Ruto Should Prepare for the Possibility of Election Defeat – Kalonzo

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has advised President William Ruto to prepare for the possibility of losing the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Sunday, March 29, during an interview, Kalonzo said President Ruto will not be the first one to lose an election.

The former Vice President pointed to the 2002 transition, when former President Daniel Arap Moi accepted defeat after his preferred candidate lost and peacefully handed over power to Mwai Kibaki.

“I have to encourage William Ruto to begin to socialize himself to the possibility of an election loss; he will not be the first one.

“In 2002, when we elected President Kibaki, Moi was seen as a strong man, but he graciously handed over to Kibaki. Uhuru Kenyatta also graciously accepted defeat,” Kalonzo stated.

The 2027 presidential hopeful claimed that President Ruto is behaving like someone who cannot accept defeat in 2027.

“We want William Ruto to prepare himself to accept, because he is behaving as if he cannot accept a loss, and making Kenyans believe he is insurmountable. I want him to prepare himself so that we have a tradition of leaders accepting defeat,” said Kalonzo.

At the same time, Kalonzo said the 2027 general election will not be a normal election but a revolutionary election.

The Wiper leader called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure the next election is free and fair.

“2027 is not a normal election; it is going to be a revolutionary election, and that is why we are calling out IEBC and telling them, you cannot afford to play with the future of this country,” he added.

Kalonzo’s remarks come days after President Ruto expressed confidence that he will defeat the opposition and secure another term in office in the 2027 polls.

Speaking on March 17, President William Ruto said the united opposition lacks a clear agenda for Kenyans, accusing its leaders of focusing on him instead of outlining what they would do for the people.

“Those people in opposition have decided that their agenda is William Ruto. Surely are you sure? You will regret.

“I will defeat them very early in the morning. We will finish them during breakfast,” President Ruto stated.

Google takes another cue from AirDrop to improve Quick Share

It took Google over a decade, but Quick Share has finally become a viable alternative to AirDrop in the Android ecosystem. The recent AirDrop compatibility only makes the feature even better. Now, taking a cue from AirDrop improvements that Apple introduced in iOS 17 in 2024, Google plans to add NFC-based file sharing support to Quick Share.

In November 2025, a report detailed that Google was working on NFC integration for Quick Share, enabling contact sharing between devices with a simple tap. Apple added a similar feature to iPhones with iOS 17, dubbed NameDrop. Apple allows file sharing with a similar gesture.

Android Authority has found evidence that points to Google working on a tap-based NFC file transfer system over Quick Share. Strings related to the “TapToShare” gesture are present in the latest Android 17 beta and Canary builds.

That’s not it, though. Samsung is also working on integrating this feature into One UI 9, which will be based on Android 17. A leaked build of the skin contains a “Tap to share” feature, which is described as “Just hold the top of your phone close to the device, and the files will be sent.”

Google has previously partnered with Samsung on major Quick Share updates, and it may be working with the company again on this one.

Ironically, NFC-based Tap to Share for file sharing is not a new feature itself. In the early days of Android, a popular third-party app, Bump, added similar functionality to Android phones. The startup was acquired by Google in 2013, eventually leading to the app’s shutdown in January 2014.

Back then, Bump relied on Bluetooth for file sharing, making large file transfers painfully slow. With Quick Share using Wi-Fi Direct, the entire process is noticeably faster, enabling the transfer of gigabytes of data within seconds. This should make Tap to Share more useful and usable in daily life.

It will also help eliminate some of the friction in Quick Share’s current workflow, where users often need to toggle device visibility and wait for nearby devices to appear.

Google could officially announce this new Quick Share upgrade with the public release of Android 17 in a few months from now. The feature may initially be exclusive to Pixels and Samsung phones before expanding to more Android devices.

Paul Mwangi: Sifuna was Raila’s exit strategy from President Ruto

Late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s lawyer, Paul Mwangi, has claimed that divisions within the ODM Party reflect a calculated political strategy rather than an unplanned fallout.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, March 29, Mwangi explained that the current standoff is rooted in two factions each aligned to Raila.

“What we have today is actually a fight between two Raila factions, a political-diplomatic faction and a militant faction. Unfortunately, the questions that now arise are about legitimacy, who the legitimate representative of Raila was,” he said.

Mwangi explained that both factions, led by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga and his Nairobi counterpart Edwin Sifuna, are valid representations of Raila’s political identity.

“They are all legitimate because Raila was a complex political character, and all of them represent something he did. Raila would not go into anything without an exit strategy. So even when he began working with President Ruto, he had an exit strategy. The exit strategy was the people who were fighting it, the Sifuna side,” he added.

Mwangi pointed to the faction associated with Sifuna as a deliberate fallback position, suggesting it was designed to counterbalance cooperation efforts if they failed.

“That was his exit strategy. And if things did not work out or if we got it go ahead with the cooperation side, he was going to go and turn into his militant side and tell them, ‘come get me,” he further said.

World’s First Robot Phone Debuts with AI-Powered Multi-Modal Intelligence

A new “species” of smartphone has emerged with the launch of the world’s first robot phone, a groundbreaking development set to redefine human-machine interaction and transform the future of mobile technology.

Developed by HONOR, the robot phone features the industry’s tiniest 4-degrees-of-freedom (DoF) gimbal system, reducing motor size by 70%, while offering robot-grade precision and motion control.

This highly responsive system allows the device to surpass screen limitations during AI video calls, enabling real-time communication.

It combines a three-axis mechanical gimbal with an AI stabilization engine to maintain camera stability during dynamic shooting.

Its AI object-tracking ability follows subjects’ movements for instant focus, while its AI SpinShot feature lets users create 90- or 180-degree cinematic shots with one hand.

Beyond its technical capabilities, the robot phone also features AI-driven interaction, allowing it to perform expressive motions, such as nodding in agreement, shaking its head in disagreement, and moving in sync with music.

By harnessing the collective power of AI and robotics, the arrival of the robot phone marks the beginning of an era where devices become active companions, capable of moving and responding intelligently to their users.

Police Shut Down Nakuru Recruitment Facility Over Abuse Claims

By Andrew Kariuki

Police in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru County, have ordered the immediate closure of a recruitment facility operated by Suluhisho Africa Limited, citing alleged human rights abuses, poor living conditions, and expired operational licences.

The facility, located in Bondeni estate, was being used as a temporary holding centre for Kenyans seeking employment abroad, particularly in Gulf countries.

The operation followed a distress call from one of the women housed at the premises, prompting a multi-agency raid that exposed what authorities described as deplorable conditions.

Njoro Sub-County Police Commander Stanley Koech said investigations revealed that more than 60 women were living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, with reports of restricted movement, harassment and withholding of personal travel documents.

Some of the women alleged they had been held at the facility for months without clear communication regarding their travel timelines, with others claiming they were threatened or mistreated when they sought answers.

Authorities further noted that the rooms were poorly ventilated, with reports of bedbug infestations, unhygienic sleeping areas, and an unclean kitchen.

Investigations also established that key operational licences had expired, including a Nakuru County Government permit that lapsed on December 31, 2025, and a National Employment Authority licence that expired on March 18, 2025.

As a result, the multi-agency team ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of the facility and directed the management to vacate the premises within 48 hours pending further investigations and compliance with legal requirements.

Officers also recovered multiple passports, some belonging to individuals not present at the facility, raising concerns over the handling of personal documents. Additional documents were confiscated to aid ongoing investigations.

Authorities said they are investigating possible violations, including human rights abuses and irregular recruitment practices.

However, the facility’s management has pushed back against the closure. Advocate Abuya Mogendi, representing Suluhisho Africa Limited director Peninah Makhapila, said they would move to court to challenge the decision.

Mogendi claimed the operation was politically motivated and that his client was being targeted by individuals threatened by her work.

“We are not happy how the police handled the whole situation. It is a private residence. We have expressed instructions, Monday morning we will be in court to challenge the notice; before they come here within the 48 hours they will have the orders from court,” he said.

Authorities have maintained that the closure was necessary to protect the welfare of individuals at the facility and ensure compliance with the law, urging the public to report suspicious activities in similar establishments.

JSC Interviews Seven Candidates for Environment and Land Court Judge Positions

By Andrew Kariuki

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is today conducting interviews for seven candidates shortlisted for appointment as judges of the Environment and Land Court (ELC), as part of an ongoing recruitment process aimed at strengthening the judiciary.

The candidates scheduled to appear before the commission include Naomi Wandia Njenga, a Senior Associate in Litigation at Kiarie, Kariuki & Associates Advocates, and Cyprian Mugambi Nguthari, an advocate and Chairperson of the Business Premises Rent Tribunal.

Others are Chief Magistrate Daniel Musyoka Ngalu, Chief Magistrate Peter Naphtaley Maina Ndwiga and Chief Magistrate Elena Gathoni Nderitu, all of whom bring extensive judicial experience to the selection process.

The interviews form part of a competitive and merit-based process conducted by the JSC to fill vacancies in the specialised court, which handles disputes relating to land and environmental matters.

The commission has emphasised transparency and public participation in the recruitment exercise, inviting members of the public to submit any credible information regarding the integrity, suitability, or competence of the candidates.

The outcome of the interviews will determine those recommended for appointment to the Environment and Land Court, a key institution in resolving land disputes and environmental cases in Kenya.

‘Mchele Babe’ Arrested in Nairobi Theft Syndicate

By Andrew Kariuki

Detectives have arrested a suspect linked to a stupefying and theft syndicate targeting unsuspecting revellers within Nairobi and its environs following an intelligence-led operation.

The arrest was triggered by a report lodged at Embakasi Police Station, where a complainant recounted being drugged after an encounter at a social joint in the city. The victim reported that after a pool game, he was approached and hugged by an unidentified woman, shortly after which he began experiencing dizziness. He later left the premises in her company before losing consciousness.

Upon regaining awareness, the victim discovered that several valuables had been stolen from his residence, including two laptops (HP and Lenovo), a Samsung S22 mobile phone, cash amounting to Ksh168,000, and jewellery valued at Ksh50,000.

Acting on forensic leads, detectives traced the suspect to the Kihunguro area in Ruiru, where Jane Wangare Ndungu was arrested at Havilla Apartments.

A search conducted at the premises led to the recovery of numerous suspected stolen items, including 40 assorted mobile phones, 14 laptops, and an iPad with a keyboard. Some of the recovered items were positively identified as belonging to the complainant.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is part of an organised criminal network that uses a stupefying substance commonly referred to as “michele” to incapacitate victims. The syndicate is believed to exploit this condition to steal valuables and obtain sensitive financial information, which is then used to facilitate further criminal activity.

The suspect has been booked at Embakasi Police Station as investigations continue to identify and apprehend other members of the network.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged members of the public to remain vigilant in social establishments and to promptly report any suspicious incidents to the nearest police station or through official reporting channels.

Australian Fugitive Dezi Freeman Shot Dead After Months on the Run

By Peter John

Australian police believe they have shot and killed Dezi Freeman after the double-murderer spent seven months on the run.

A well-known conspiracy theorist, Freeman gunned down two police officers on his property in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah last August, before fleeing into dense bushland and evading extensive searches.

Victoria Police say a man was shot dead after an hours-long standoff at a rural property in the state’s north-east on Monday morning. Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said the man is believed to be Freeman, but formal identification is still underway.

“Should [his identity] be confirmed… this brings closure to what was a tragic and terrible event.”

Police believe Freeman, 56, came out of a building – which Bush described as a cross between a container and a long caravan – armed and wrapped in a blanket shortly after 08:30 local time.

“Our ultimate goal was to arrest the person,” Bush said.

“There was an opportunity for him to surrender peacefully but he did not.”

No officers were hurt during the operation, police said, which will be investigated, as is standard in police shootings.

The squad sent to Freeman’s property on 26 August was there to search it amid an investigation into sex offences, when two senior constables – Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart – were killed by Freeman.

Their families were the first to be told about Freeman’s death, Bush said, adding that it would take 24 to 48 hours to confirm the identity of the body.

Investigations will now focus on anyone who may have helped Freeman while he was on the run, Bush added.

“It would be very difficult for him to get to where he was… without assistance,” Bush said. “If anyone was complicit, they will be held accountable.”

In a statement on Monday, the Police Association of Victoria said Freeman’s death was a “step forward”.

“Closure isn’t the right word,” the statement said, adding that it “doesn’t lessen the trauma” of the two police officers’ deaths.

Freeman, whose real name was Desmond Filby, was a self-described “sovereign citizen”, part of an anti-government movement that rejects authority and laws.

Locals in Porepunkah – an alpine tourist town beneath Mount Buffalo – said he had lived on his property with his wife and two children.

After the double murder, police shut down the area, offered a A$1m (£525,000, $709,000) reward and spent months scouring steep and rocky terrain riddled with caves and mineshafts for Freeman – who had extensive bush skills.

Last month, police renewed their search and brought in cadaver dogs, saying they “strongly” believed Freeman was dead.

Bush on Monday said there was “a lot to suggest that Freeman had taken his own life”, but officers had kept an open mind. He would reveal what led police to his location.
