Opposition leaders accuse Ruto, Raila of manipulating IEBC reconstitution

Opposition leaders have raised concerns over the shortlisting of government employees and allies of President William Ruto for the IEBC jobs.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, March 1, Martha Karua expressed reservations over the candidature of Joy Mdivo, who is seeking to become the new IEBC chairperson.

In particular, Karua, who was flanked by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, questioned whether she would be impartial given that she held a role in UDA.

Mdivo was also appointed as Kenya Power board chairman by Ruto.

“She has been the chairperson of the UDA internal dispute resolution committee. It is clear that she is not eligible for consideration as IEBC commissioner as stipulated in Article 88 of the constitution,” Karua noted.

“Why was she shortlisted by the IEBC selection panel? This is a clear violation of the constitution.”

Consequently, the leaders called on the candidates to withdraw their candidature, noting that the electoral body needed to have candidates that were impartial.

Additionally, the team also questioned the shortlisting of Katwa Kigen who has been Ruto’s lawyer.

“Ruto’s personal advocate is also set for an interview as a possible commissioner. How can a person bound by the principle of client confidentiality be expected to discharge his constitutional duty free of actual or perceived conflict of interest?”

Meanwhile, the leaders questioned whether the National Intelligence Service (NIS) has taken a role in the recruitment of the IEBC officials.

“There are growing concerns of NIS, which has been accused of abductions. We challenge the IEBC panel to explain the shortlisting of Midivo and Kigen and the role, if any, of the NIS in the selection process,” read the statement in part.

Makueni’s Sports Councils Praised for Driving Sports Growth

The MKJ Supa Cup Tournament 2025 which concluded on Sunday 30th has been celebrated as one of the most well-organized sporting events, marked by exceptional discipline and a high level of talent display.

The finals, held at Unoa Grounds in Wote Town drew thousands of enthusiastic fans and local leaders, who commended Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.’s administration for the seamless planning and execution of the tournament.

Governor Mutula credited the success to the Ward Sports Councils, which have played a crucial role in managing sports at the grassroots level.

He emphasized that these councils are instrumental in talent identification, securing funding for sports development, and ensuring that athletics receive the same priority as other key sectors.

“Thanks to these councils, Makueni is steadily emerging as a sporting powerhouse. Soon, it will be the go-to destination for national clubs scouting for talented athletes,” said Mutula.

To further boost sports development, the county government is accelerating the construction of modern sports infrastructure, including training pitches, to provide aspiring athletes with professional facilities.

Additionally, the Department of Sports is collaborating with national sports federations to enhance the skills of local coaches and referees through capacity-building programs.

After the finals, an all-star team in each of the six disciplines (football, volleyball, basketball 5×5, basketball 3×3, beach handball and beach volleyball) has been assembled to represent Makueni at the Kenya Youth Inter-county Sports Association Games (KYISA) in Homa Bay slated for 13th -19th April.

KEBS Issues Guidelines for Registration of Police Auction Vehicles

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has outlined the conditions and waiver requirements for the registration of police-auctioned motor vehicles.

In a notice on Tuesday, April 1, KEBS cited the enforcement of the Kenya Standard Code of Practice for Inspection of Road Vehicles which prohibits the importation and registration of vehicles older than eight years from their first registration date.

However, the agency noted that under special circumstances, it may recommend a waiver of the age limit to the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry.

“KEBS enforces KS 1515:2000 – Kenya Standard Code of Practice for Inspection of Road Vehicles that prohibits importation and registration of motor vehicles that are more than eight (8) years of age from the year of first registration.

“However, KEBS may recommend to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry to waive the age limit requirement subject to compliance to set Waiver Evaluation Technical Criteria (WETC) by applicants,” the notice read.

KEBS made it clear that specific conditions must be met before a waiver for a police-auctioned vehicle is considered.

According to the notice, the applicant must provide a waiver application letter along with a multi-agency pre-auction report.

Applicants must also provide a Gazette Notice by the National Police Service listing the vehicle for auction, specifying units for use on roads and those for scrapping, in line with the multi-agency pre-auction report.

Other requirements are a court order authorizing the auction, license of the auctioneer who conducted the auction along with the certificate of sale.

A tape lift from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and an Interpol clearance is among tne required documents.

“We wish to inform the public that KEBS will only consider and recommend to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry a waiver of the age limit for police-auctioned vehicles that meet the requirements specified above,” KEBS advised.

Speedboat carrying 36 tourists and crew explodes off Phuket, Thailand

A speedboat carrying 36 tourists and crew erupted into a fiery explosion off the coast of Thailand.

At least six people have been in injured – with the captain among them – in the fire near Maiton Island, off Phuket Island, this morning.

The vessel, Tana Marine 555, was just 50 meters offshore when the blast ripped through it, turning it into a fireball.

Footage from the scene shows the flames raging, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky.

The force sent debris flying as flames rapidly consumed the boat, leaving people on board with mere seconds to react.

The tourists, mainly from Russia and Kazakhstan, were jumped into the water, swimming for their lives. They were later rescued by a passing boat.

Nachapong Pranit, director of the Phuket Marine Office, said a rescue team was deployed after receiving a report at 9:20 am.

The Phuket Information Centre said: ‘The fire spread rapidly. There were 36 crew members and tourists on board.

‘Everyone was able to get off the boat in time. However, there were minor injuries from the incident.’

A report said three tourists were injured along with the captain, a guide and the boat’s mechanic.

Later reports said that two were injured with burns and were taken to a waiting ambulance and transferred to hospital.

One report said the vessel had made a swimming stop when the engine exploded and ignited – but for this the casualties would have been far higher. Authorities are yet to comment on what happened.

‘The fire was caused by an engine malfunction,’ it said.

‘While rescue services were getting to the site, the boat washed up on the shore, where it completely burned out.’

This is the latest disaster involving a vessel in the last week after a tourist submarine with 45 Russian citizens on board sank off the coast of Egypt.

Trump administration begins mass layoffs at health agencies, sources say

(Reuters) – The Trump administration has fired staff at U.S. health agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health, as it embarked on its plan to cut 10,000 health jobs, according to sources familiar with the situation and a health official.

The cuts are part of a broad plan by President Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk to shrink staffing levels in federal departments and agencies.

Brian King, head of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, was fired, according to an email sent by King to FDA staff seen by Reuters.

Peter Stein, the director of the Office of New Drugs in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research division, resigned on Tuesday, according to one source familiar with the matter.

King and Stein’s exits adds to top leadership departures across the FDA’s divisions including drugs, food, vaccines, medical devices and tobacco products. Staff have also been leaving and some employees reviewing products say they are struggling to meet their deadlines.

An FDA employee said staff had to present their badges at the building entrance and those who had been fired were given a ticket and told to return home, according to one source.

Other fired staff received emails Tuesday morning that said their terminations did not reflect on their service, performance or conduct, and that they would be placed on administrative leave immediately, according to an email seen by Reuters.

At the CDC, fired staff worked at the National Center for Environmental Health, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, according to another source.

The cuts at NCIRD included at least one person working on the federal response to measles outbreaks, the source said.

Officials at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services were not immediately available for comment.

‘Dead body’ found in woods turns out to be sex doll after five hour manhunt

A five hour police hunt for a corpse ended in shock when the body turned out to be a lifelike sex doll.

The ‘dead body in a blue plastic bag’ was first spotted on Saturday evening by a dog walker at a demolition site in Rostock, northern Germany.

It was only once homicide investigators, police drones and fire engines were at the scene for five hours did they discover the human remains were actually something entirely different.

The alleged corpse was in fact a lifelike female sex doll.

The love buddy had even been set on fire in several places and stuffed into a blue IKEA bag.

Bemused police officers then carted off the synthetic doll and a funeral director, hired to transport the body to a morgue, was told to go home.

The cordon and crime scene were hastily deconstructed, what has already been labelled â€˜one of the most bizarre police operations in criminal history’.

This is not the first time a human sex toy has been mistaken for a dead body.

Police officers in the US state of Georgia responded to a call of a female body found along a hiking path in the Hitchiti National Forest.

After racing to the trail they unearthed a discarded human-sized sex doll.

The blonde-haired doll was dressed in a short blue shorts and a pink tube top and appeared remarkably lifelike when partly submerged in the woodland.

Cops quickly dubbed the doll Selena and collected her as evidence.

They department then joned on Facebook that Selena was ‘a little under the weather’ but ‘has been having a nice day and is expected to make a full recovery.’

The Police assured Selena’s owner that their DNA would not be collected, but stressed the importance of not littering.

“Kindly your honour I pray you dismiss this matter since the complainant is no longer interested to pursue the case,” Kimani prayed.

In response, Murage urged the court to consider the weighty of the matter and consider his plea for adjournment.

He further informed the court about the current situation in Malaysia where it is grappling with a massive gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights that resulted in evacuations and injuries,

“Considering the current situation in Malaysia, no one knows whether the complainant is safe or not but we hope he is fine. For that reason I pray you consider our prayer and grant our request for adjournment,” Murage said.

Nakuru MCAs Reject Senator’s Call to Impeach Governor Kihika

Written by Kelly Were

A section of Nakuru County Assembly members has strongly opposed Senator Tabitha Karanja’s request to impeach Governor Susan Kihika.

The senator had called for the governor’s removal due to her prolonged absence from office, but the MCAs dismissed the demand, arguing that county operations were running smoothly despite Kihika being on maternity leave.

Led by Majority Leader William Mutai, the MCAs criticized Senator Karanja for making statements from a distance instead of addressing the assembly directly.

Mutai explained that the senator has a designated seat in the county assembly but has never used it to formally engage with them, as required by law.

He urged her to present her concerns in the assembly rather than making remarks outside official channels.

Keringet Ward MCA also voiced dissatisfaction with the senator’s approach, stating that while she might have valid concerns, addressing them publicly rather than through the assembly was inappropriate.

The MCAs noted that since the 2022 elections, Karanja had not formally requested to address them, as the constitution requires.

Nominated MCA Hassan Duale also criticized Karanja, accusing her of failing to engage with the assembly to strengthen governance.

He argued that as a woman leader, she should support Governor Kihika, who is on a legitimate leave, instead of attacking her.

Duale insisted that county programs were progressing well and that the senator should focus on collaborating with local leaders rather than fueling conflict.

The MCAs emphasized that they were actively involved in public participation programs to prioritize county projects. They urged Karanja to work with the governor instead of pushing for impeachment.

This is not the first time Senator Karanja has called for Governor Kihika’s impeachment, previously accusing her of mismanaging county resources.

However, the MCAs remain firm in their support for the governor.

Chaos in Kayole as Residents Attack Pastors Over ‘Black Jesus’ Sermon

Written by Kelly Were

Kayole residents clashed with a group of pastors after they preached that Jesus was a black man.

The pastors, members of the Israel United in Christ Church, were dressed in purple T-shirts bearing their church’s logo as they spread their message.

However, their words angered some members of the community, who are used to the belief that Jesus was white.

The situation quickly escalated as some residents started shouting at the preachers, expressing their disagreement.

Tensions rose further, leading to physical altercations. One of the American pastors was hit in the face with a stone, while others were pushed and roughed up by the growing crowd.

Eyewitnesses said the preachers tried to defend themselves as the angry mob closed in.

One of the pastors explained that their message was about reminding people of their value, telling them they were children of Israel and that Jesus was black. However, the statement did not sit well with some of the locals, leading to chaos.

Despite the violent response, the pastors maintained that their mission was to spread what they believe to be the truth.

Meanwhile, residents were left divided on the issue, with some supporting the preachers and others insisting that their message was provocative.

Authorities have yet to comment on the incident, but the attack has sparked discussions on religious beliefs and racial perceptions of Jesus.
