Egypt awarded U20 AFCON hosting rights after Ivory Coast’s withdrawal

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially awarded the hosting rights for the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 to the Egyptian Football Association and the Egyptian government.

The tournament was initially set to be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire in April 2025. However, this week the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) and the Ivorian government informed CAF that due to unforeseen circumstances, they are unable to organize the competition.

Egypt had previously submitted a bid to host the tournament before Côte d’Ivoire was selected. Now, Egypt’s desire to organize the event has been fulfilled.

The competition will kick off with the opening match on Sunday, April 27, 2025 while the final will take place on May 18, 2025.

Egypt, already qualified for the tournament, has been drawn in Group B alongside Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. The competition kicks off on Sunday, April 27, 2025, with the final scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Among the 12 participating teams is Kenya, set to make its AFCON U20 debut. The Rising Stars have been placed in Group C alongside defending champions Senegal, 2017 winners Zambia, and fellow debutants Sierra Leone.

The tournament’s four semifinalists will secure spots at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, set to run from September 27 to October 19.

Senator Omtatah slams KDF, NIS Response to Ruto Must Go Chants, List 4 Demands to Govt

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has expressed concern over remarks made by Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri and National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji during a public lecture at the National Intelligence and Research University.

In a statement on Friday, Omtatah said the remarks of the two officials violates the constitution and laws governing security agencies.

“We are deeply alarmed by the involvement of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) in responding to the “#RutoMustGo” campaign, as evidenced by their public statements during a lecture at the National Intelligence and Research University on March 27, 2025.

“This direct engagement in a politically charged matter violates the Constitution and the laws governing security agencies, which mandate them to remain neutral and apolitical,” Omtatah stated.

The Busia Senator noted that security organs should not perform its functions in a partisan manner and that Kahariri and Haji’s remarks during the lecture compromise their independence.

“The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are established under Article 241(2)(a), which mandates them to: ‘defend and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic.’ Nowhere does the Constitution authorize the KDF to engage in domestic political affairs,” said Omtatah.

Omtatah demanded the immediate cessation of any engagement by security agencies in political affairs.

He also demanded for a public statement from the Haji and General Kahariri clarifying their role and reaffirming their commitment to constitutional neutrality.

The Busia Senator also demanded a Parliamentary oversight investigation into the alleged misuse of state security agencies for political purposes and legal accountability for any officials found in breach of the Constitution and relevant laws.

“Kenya is a democratic nation governed by the rule of law. We will not allow security institutions to be weaponized for political suppression, as seen in continental examples where military overreach, whether in coups or subtle political meddling, has led to repression, economic ruin, and prolonged unrest,” he added.

General Kahariri on Thursday said the ‘Ruto must go’ campaign must be conducted according to the constitution.

Kahariri reiterated that the military is apolitical but warned Kenyans against exercising rights to the extent of tearing the country apart.

“In the military, one of our core values is that we are apolitical; we don’t support any political side. We defend the constitution and the government of the day, duly elected by the people. So, when people decide they are tired of this government, yet they voted for it and say ‘must go’, it must be done according to the constitution,” Kahariri remarked.

Macron urges Algeria to free writer jailed for Morocco comments

France’s President Emmanuel Macron is urging Algeria to free an 80-year-old writer who was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison, following accusations he had undermined Algeria’s territorial integrity.

Boualem Sansal was arrested in Algeria last year after apparently telling a French far-right media group that, during the colonial era, France gave too much land to Algeria and too little to Morocco.

He had also said that the disputed territory of Western Sahara was historically part of Morocco.

During his detention the French-Algerian author has spent time in hospital for ill-health.

His case has sparked a wave of support from intellectuals and politicians, including Nigerian Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka, Indian-British novelist Salman Rushdie and French officials.

One conservative mayor of a Parisian suburb is promising to hand out free copies of Sansal’s books to every 18-year-old in his town, and says the author’s sentencing in Algeria is an attack on free speech.

The French president meanwhile told a news conference: “I hope there can be humanitarian decisions by the highest Algerian authorities to give him back his freedom and allow him to be treated for the disease he is fighting.”

Back in February, Macron sent a stark warning about the writer’s plight, saying “Boualem Sansal’s arbitrary detention, on top of his worrying health situation, is one of the elements that need to be settled before confidence [between our countries] can be fully restored.”

Boualem Sansal now finds himself at centre of a deepening diplomatic row.

“He has unwillingly become a pawn in the troubled relationship between Paris and Algiers,” a committee of his supporters in France said recently.

Algeria was once a prized French colony and fought a dogged war of independence eventually winning its sovereignty in 1962.

Relations have long been strained between the two countries but reached a new low last year, when France backed Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara, where Algeria backs the Polisario group fighting for the territory’s independence.

Algiers responded to that slight by withdrawing its ambassador to Paris.

Three years earlier, Algeria severed diplomatic ties with Morocco.

Following Wednesday’s court ruling, Sansal’s lawyer pleaded to Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to show “humanity” to the writer.

Sansal is well known for his anti-Islamist views and is an outspoken critic of the Algerian government.

His detractors say he is a darling of the far-right who appeases their prejudices.

Far-right French leader Marine Le Pen has called Sansal a “fighter for liberty and a courageous opponent of Islamism”.

His age has previously been reported as 75, but his publishers Gallimard say he is in fact 80.

Sansal’s best-known works include 2084 – a satire about religious radicalism which won the French Academy’s Grand Prix of the Francophonie a decade ago.

His next novel, Vivre, is to be published in May and tells the story of a select group of people who are chosen to colonise a new planet as Earth nears apocalypse.

One million children could die if US cuts funding, charity warns

A global health organisation has warned that one million children could die from preventable diseases if the US terminates its financial support.

Dr Sania Nishtar – head of Gavi, an alliance that buys critical vaccines for developing countries – told the BBC a cut in US funding would have a “disastrous impact on global health security”.

This follows a report in the New York Times that the Trump administration intends to terminate Gavi’s funding – the US is the alliance’s third largest donor.

Gavi had not received a termination notice from the US but it was “engaging with the White House and Congress” to secure $300m (£230m) for its activities in 2025, and longer-term funding, Dr Nishtar said.

The US has pledged $1.6bn for the 2026-2030 period – about 15% of Gavi’s total funding.

Since taking office in January 2025, US President Donald Trump has made it clear he wants overseas spending to be closely aligned with his “America First” approach.

The international development sector has been braced for a profound effect on humanitarian programmes around the world.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) was one of the first agencies targeted by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) for cuts at the start of 2025, when the Trump administration ordered a 90-day freeze of all US foreign aid.

Of the 500 million children that needed to be immunised around the world, 75 million would miss out if Gavi lost US funding, said Dr Nishtar, resulting in deaths from preventable diseases like measles, tuberculosis, pneumonia and polio.

This would also mean that governments and health agencies’ ability to keep the world safe through vaccine stockpiles against diseases such as Ebola, cholera and mpox would be compromised, she said.

Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) agrees with Gavi’s warning about the potential funding cuts.

“The consequences of this political decision will be catastrophic,” said MSF USA chief programs officer Carrie Teicher.

Dr Sania Nishtar said Gavi was a “lean and efficient” organisation

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) “fully supports” Gavi and was “engaging” with US authorities on the disruption caused by the withdrawal of US funding for major programmes, said Africa CDC emergencies incident manager Dr Ngongo Ngashi.

He added: “We are prioritising routine vaccines but we also know how crucial vaccines for emergencies are.”

Dr Ngashi also said it was “critical that we find our own funding streams – that are not dependent on the decision of partners” and which help Africans contribute “to advancing public health”.

Gavi has said it will try to further broaden its donor base. Indonesia, a country that has previously been a recipient of Gavi’s assistance, became a donor last year.

“As a lean and efficient organisation where 97 cents in every dollar raised goes towards our immunisation programmes, it is impossible to consider that any cut in funding by the US would not have disastrous implications for global health and for the safety of people everywhere,” Dr Sania Nishtar said.

The BBC has contacted the US State Department, which runs what remains of USAID, for comment.

Real Madrid quartet probed for alleged indecent conduct

Uefa has opened an investigation into allegations of indecent conduct by four Real Madrid players during their Champions League last-16 win against Atletico Madrid.

Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Dani Ceballos allegedly made gestures towards the home fans after Real Madrid beat their city rivals on penalties to book their place in the quarter-finals.

TV pictures showed German defender Rudiger appearing to make a throat-slitting motion, apparently towards the crowd after the shootout victory, while Mbappe was shown seemingly making a crotch-grabbing gesture.

Spanish media said, external Atletico reported the actions to Uefa last week.

The players could be at risk of suspension but there is no guarantee the case will be heard before their quarter-final with Arsenal. The first leg for that tie is at Emirates Stadium on 8 April and the return leg a week later.

In a statement, Uefa said: “[An] ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct” made by the four Real Madrid players.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”

Barcelona breeze past Wolfsburg to reach semi-finals

Holders Barcelona cruised past Wolfsburg to set up a Women’s Champions League semi-final with Chelsea.

Barcelona secured a dominant 4-1 win in the first leg and were quick to extend their aggregate lead at Estadi Johan Cruyff, with Salma Paralluelo hitting two goals past Wolfsburg keeper Anneke Borbe inside 20 minutes.

Esmee Brugts added a third before the break, drilling a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom-left corner of the Wolfsburg goal.

Substitute Claudia Pina made an impact off the bench for the hosts, linking up well with Alexia Putellas to slot in before Lineth Beerensteyn pulled a consolation goal back for Wolfsburg following a poor clearance from goalkeeper Cata Coll.

However, Barcelona wrapped up the victory in style with Pina and Mapi Leon each sending superb free-kicks past Borbe to give the Catalans a 10-2 win on aggregate.

Chelsea recovered from a 2-0 first-leg defeat by Manchester City to progress 3-2 on aggregate and set up a last-four tie against the two-time defending champions.

Barcelona thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in the 2020-21 final.

Semi-final ties will be played on 19-20 and 26-27 April.

Barcelona beat Osasuna in rearranged La Liga game

Barcelona beat Osasuna in their rearranged La Liga fixture to move three points clear at the top of the table.

The game was meant to be played on 8 March but was called off 20 minutes before kick-off after the death of Barcelona’s first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick criticised the timing of this rescheduled match, coming a day after the end of the international break – with 27-goal Raphinha missing out after travelling back from Brazil duty.

“It’s disrespectful to the club to schedule that match on that date, no matter what club it is,” Barca defender Jules Kounde told DAZN.

“I think that beyond the lack of respect for the clubs, it’s a lack of respect for the players, because we have to understand that we’re not machines.”

Kounde played a full 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties in France’s victory over Croatia in the Nations League on Sunday.

On Thursday, the Catalans were comfortable winners at their temporary Olympic Stadium home.

Ferran Torres slid them into the lead from Alex Balde’s cross.

Dani Olmo then won a penalty after being fouled by goalkeeper Sergio Herrera.

Herrera saved Olmo’s spot-kick – but it had to be retaken because an Osasuna player encroached in the box. Olmo scored the second time around, but in a busy first half later had to be replaced because of injury.

Substitute Robert Lewandowski headed in a third goal to cap a swift counter-attack.

Barcelona, who are three points above Real Madrid and seven clear of Atletico Madrid, are next in action at home to neighbours Girona in La Liga on Sunday.

Bulls stun Lakers with half-court buzzer-beater

Josh Giddey hit a brilliant half-court buzzer-beater to help the Chicago Bulls complete an exceptional 119-117 comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

The Bulls were trailing by five points with less than 13 seconds remaining at the United Center but they hit three three-pointers in the last 10 seconds of the match alone.

With time expiring, Giddey let fly from within his own half and walked off with remarkable calm as his shot found the hoop.

With 25 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists, Giddey hit his fifth triple-double of the season – the only Bulls player with more in one campaign is the 15 Michael Jordan managed in 1988-89.

“Special moment to do it with these guys, this team,” Giddey said.

LeBron James, who was guilty of giving away possession when his side were 115-113 up with 9.8 seconds left, said the Bulls should have seen the game out.

“We put ourselves in position to win, gave up a lot of threes in the fourth quarter, still put ourselves in position to win,” James said.

“Horrible turnover by myself, miscommunication the play before that. AR (Austin Reaves) tried to save us. Tip your hats.”

Lakers coach JJ Redick said there was a mood of “devastation” in the dressing room afterwards, adding “it’s a hell of a way to lose a basketball game”.

Thunder match franchise record

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander top scored with 37 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder recorded a franchise record 61st win of the season with a 125-104 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Thunder, who have already clinched the Western Conference title, have lost just 12 games and won 61 times in 73 matches this term.

They are hoping to move past the second round of the post-season for the first time since 2016.

“It just shows how much we’re getting better throughout the years – and we’ve got to run through the finish line,” said Thunder guard Luguentz Dort.
