From ego-ridden team to complete package – why PSG pose ultimate test

Stacy Boit,

Luis Enrique’s expertise at rebuilding a culture as well as a football team means Arsenal will confront the complete package when they meet Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final.

“Shoot us into the final” was the slogan emblazoned on a giant banner unfurled by Bayern Munich’s fans in an electric atmosphere on Wednesday, as their side tried to overturn a 5-4 deficit from the classic first leg in Paris.

But it was PSG who obeyed the message, delivering a third-minute hammer blow when Georgian genius Khvicha Kvaratskhelia raced down the wing before setting up Ousmane Dembele to lash a finish high past Manuel Neuer.

Harry Kane’s late equaliser on the night could not even be described as a consolation, coming only seconds from the end.

Moments later PSG were able to celebrate reaching a second successive final – and the chance to retain the crown they won so brilliantly by beating Inter Milan 5-0 last season.

Luis Enrique danced on the Allianz Arena turf, as he did after the 2025 final, with PSG delivering the latest compelling evidence they must be counted among the great sides of recent memory.

Arsenal will be confident in their first Champions League final for 20 years, but there is no escaping the fact they face a mammoth task on 30 May in Hungary.

And that is because Gunners boss Mikel Arteta must overcome a master strategist and inspirational footballing architect in his PSG counterpart Luis Enrique.

Monsignor Obed Muriungi ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of Archdiocese of Nairobi

By Bonface Mulyungi

The Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, Hubertus Van Megen, on Wednesday ordained Monsignor Obed Muriungi Karobia an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, at a ceremony held at the Holy Family Minor Basilica Catholic Church, Nairobi.

The colourful ceremony that attracted hundreds of faithfuls, Archbishops, Bishops and the clergy from across the globe to witness the newly consecrated Bishop, aged 47, taking his vows was also used to bid farewell to Apostolic Nuncio Van Megan who has been sent by Pope Leo XIV for an Apostolic mission to Germany.

Pope Leo XIV on March 26, 2026, appointed Monsignor Obed, a member of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, as the Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi.

Addressing the congregation, who included the Metropolitan Archbishop of Nairobi, Phillip Anyolo and the Chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, the Nuncio called upon Bishop Obed to be a servant-leader and a servant to all in the vineyard of the Lord while shepherding his flock.“Your consecration is to be eager to serve. The higher we are elevated, the deeper we must bow, this is the way we will be judged accordingly,” said Van Megan.

“As a representative of Christ, you have been given the responsibility to guide, and shepherd, even though you will have to say difficult things, you and the people you lead should always grow closer to Christ and follow in his footsteps,” emphasized the Nuncio.

In his remarks, Archbishop Muhatia while bidding farewell to Nuncio Van Megen said the Nuncio during his tenure at the Nuncio office demonstrated the true link between the church and the office of the Pope in Rome, which he noted made the church grow various sectors.

“During your tenure of office, you not only confirmed priests and bishops, but also brought your office closer to the lay people who have come to understand who the Nuncio is,” said Archbishop Muhatia, and added “This has been shown by the outpouring of love from the faithful in the social media”.

Thanking Pope Leo XIV for the trust he has put in him through the appointment, Bishop Obed said he will return the goodness the Lord has done for him by responding with renewed commitment to service and assured Archbishop Anyolo of full collaboration in service of the people of God.“I commit to serve God’s people with humility and joy and work with fidelity within the laws of the church,” said Bishop Obed.

Bishop Obed’s responsibility will be to support Archbishop Anyolo together with Bishop David Kamau, also an Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi, and collaborating with clergy and laity in serving God.

Bishop Obed joined the Friars Minor Conventual congregation (OFM Conv), and was ordained a priest on 28th July 2012.

By Bonface Mulyungi

Justice Mohamed Warsame has been sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya.

Warsame took the oath of office on Thursday morning at State House, Nairobi.

The judge now joins the apex court’s bench comprising Chief Justice Martha Koome and Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Justices Smokin Wanjala, Njoki Ndung’u, Isaac Lenaola and William Ouko.

During the swearing-in ceremony, President William Ruto urged Warsame to follow suit in preserving the Supreme Court’s distinguished institutional heritage, enriching the development of its jurisprudence, and fortifying the foundations of justice.

“Your conduct, diligence, wisdom, and integrity will play a defining role in shaping the next chapter in the evolution of this vital institution and in deepening public trust and confidence in the rule of law,” said the President.

Ruto further described Kenya’s Supreme Court as the ultimate guardian of the Constitution and the impartial arbiter of Kenya’s most profound legal and constitutional questions.

“I am pleased to note that over the past 15 years, the court has remained steadfast in the discharge of its solemn mandate, consistently affirming the supremacy of the Constitution, safeguarding the sovereignty of the people of Kenya, and defending the independence of the judiciary,” remarked President Ruto.

The Head of State added that the Supreme Court has continuously sought to ensure that justice prevails for every Kenyan without fear or favor.

Justice Warsame fills the vacancy left after the passing of Justice Mohammed Ibrahim in December 2025.He previously served in the Court of Appeal of Kenya, a position he held since 2012 after his elevation from the High Court, where he had been appointed in 2003.

He also served in multiple divisions of the High Court, including the Commercial, Criminal and Judicial Review divisions, gaining experience in a wide range of legal matters while also recording a notable rate of case clearance.

US President Trump pauses Hormuz plan 50 hours after he announced it – what happened?

By Bonface Mulyungi

US President Donald Trump has said the military operation to guide stranded merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz will be paused just two days after he announced it.

Trump declared on Sunday that “Project Freedom” would begin the next morning in an attempt to unblock the crucial waterway which Tehran has effectively closed since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.

Iran’s threats to ships using the strait – through which some 20% of the world’s oil and gas flows – has led to large increases in the oil price and fears for the global economy.

But 50 hours later the president posted that the mission was being put on hold “for a short period of time”.His decision came on the same day his defence secretary had declared the US was “leading with strength, clarity and purpose for the benefit of the entire world”.BBC Verify has put together a timeline of what happened during the two days of “Project Freedom”.

Sunday – Trump announces ‘Project Freedom’For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business,” Trump posted on his Truth Social social media platform at 21:35 BST (20:35 GMT).

“I have told my Representatives to inform them that we will use best efforts to get their Ships and Crews safely out of the Strait.”According to the Baltic and International Maritime Council shipping association some 1,000 vessels with around 20,000 seafarers on board are currently stranded in the region.

Trump said the “humanitarian gesture” would start on “Monday morning Middle East time”.”I am fully aware that my Representatives are having very positive discussions with the Country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all,” he added.

Monday – Two ships reportedly pass through straitJust after midnight UK time on Monday, the US military’s Central Command (Centcom) posted that its forces “will begin supporting Project Freedom, 4 May, to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz”.Centcom said “Project Freedom” would involve guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land and sea-based aircraft, and 15,000 service personnel.

According to UKMTO – the British military’s operation tracking threats to shipping in the Middle East – the US was advising vessels to pass through a “security area” off the Oman coast.Route taken by ships through Strait of HormuzLater that day, Centcom posted:

“As a first step, two US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz and are safely headed on their journey.”And according to Trump, during the first day of the operation the US military struck seven Iranian “fast boats” in the strait – a claim disputed by Iranian media.

The Tasnim news agency reported military sources saying that two small cargo vessels had been hit killing five civilians.

On Monday the UAE’s foreign ministry reported a tanker affiliated with Adnoc – its state-owned oil company – was hit in the Strait of Hormuz and South Korea reported an explosion on one of its ships anchored just off the UAE.

A fire also broke out at the oil port of Fujairah after what the UAE said was an Iranian attack, which Iran denied.Tuesday – US officials talk up the projectUS Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Dan Caine focused on “Project Freedom” at a Pentagon news conference on Tuesday.”Hundreds more ships from nations around the world are lining up to transit”, Hegseth said, while Caine added: “Merchant vessels have transited and we anticipate more to transit over the coming days.”Neither offered an exact timeline for how long the project would last, but Hegseth said it was “focused in scope and temporary in duration”.Getty Images Pete Hegseth calls on reporters during a press briefing at the Pentagon on 5 May.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the press about “Project Freedom” at the Pentagon on Tuesday”Project Freedom is under way, commerce will be flowing, and America is once again leading with strength, clarity and purpose for the benefit of the entire world. Our will is unshakable,” he added.

Later that day, America’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, spoke to reporters at the White House – saying the US was carrying out the operation as a “favour to the world” as it was “the only country that can project power in that part of the world the way we’re doing now”.Later on Tuesday – Trump pauses the projectJust hours after Hegseth and Rubio had spoken, Trump paused “Project Freedom”.At 18:52 Washington time (23:52 BST) he posted on Truth Social saying the decision had been made by “mutual agreement” because there had been “great progress” towards a deal with Iran.”Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” the president posted. The project – which Hegseth said earlier the same day was part of a “laser-focused strategy” – had been put on hold.

A little over four hours before Trump’s announcement a ship belonging to the French CMA CGM group was hit in the Strait of Hormuz – injuring some of the crew and damaging the vessel.

According to the shipping publication Lloyd’s List ship owners and insurers said “Project Freedom” had not given them “sufficient clarity or credible protection to justify resuming transits” through the strait.”Transit volumes through the Strait of Hormuz continue to drop amid escalating security concerns,” it added.

Breaking News: PSG eliminates Bayern Munich, advancing to the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal

By Bonface Mulyungi

Paris Saint-Germain will face Arsenal in the 2025-26 Champions League final after the French side advanced past Bayern Munich following a 1-1 draw in Wednesday’s semifinal second leg and a 6-5 advantage on aggregate.

After a nine-goal thriller last week in the opening leg, the second meeting between the European giants saw only two goals with the valuable tally for PSG coming very early in the first half.

Ousmane Dembélé netted his seventh goal of the competition 139 seconds into match to double PSG’s aggregate lead and force Bayern Munich into desperation mode in front of a sold-out crowd at the Allianza Arena. In the third minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Fabián Ruiz worked a give-and-go which sent the Georgia international down the left side. The PSG winger then cut his pass across the box to an unmarked Dembélé’, who fired it into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The assist was Kvaratskhelia’s sixth in the Champions League this season to go along with his 10 goals. His 16 goal contributions is now tied with Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé for the lead in the competition.

Bayern Munich thought they had good reason for a penalty kick shout in the 31st minute when PSG’s João Neves handled the ball. Referee João Pinheiro did not make a call and stopped the game in a bizarre moment. That came shortly after Nuno Mendes avoided a handball, which could have ended with a second yellow card. Pinheiro somehow whistled Bayern Munich for a handball.

According to BBC Sports’ Dale Johnson, there is a part of the IFAB handball rule stating no foul should be called if a ball is unexpectedly kicked into the hand/arm of a teammate, even if the hand/arm is away from the body. A whistle would only occur if the ball goes directly into the opposition net or the player scores immediately afterwards. Those calls left the Bayern Munich sideline furious after a frustrating half that saw Harry Kane record just one of his 24 touches on the ball inside the PSG penalty area.

The second half was more of the same as Bayern Munich retained possession dominance, but the finishing left much to be desired as PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov was not threatened.Kane would give Bayern Munich late hope with a goal in the 94th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Bundesliga champions.PSG will now face Arsenal in the final on Saturday, May 30 at Puskás Aréna in Budapest. The Ligue 1 side is aiming to become the first team to win back-to-back Champions League titles since Real Madrid’s three-peat from 2016-2018.

CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

By Andrew Kariuki

Media mogul Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and one of the most influential figures in modern broadcasting, has died at the age of 87.

Turner transformed global journalism in 1980 after launching Cable News Network (CNN), the world’s first 24-hour television news channel, permanently changing the way news is consumed across the globe.

CNN announced his death on Wednesday, with tributes pouring in from journalists, politicians and media personalities worldwide.

Current CNN chairman and CEO Mark Thompson described Turner as “the giant on whose shoulders we stand.”

“He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN,” Thompson said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump also paid tribute to the media pioneer, describing him as “one of the greats of broadcast history.”

“Whenever I needed him, he was there, always willing to fight for a good cause,” Trump stated.

Turner initially faced ridicule after launching CNN, with critics dismissing the idea of a round-the-clock news network and mockingly referring to it as the “Chicken Noodle Network.”

However, CNN quickly established itself through major live coverage including the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986 and its historic live reporting during the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

Former US President George Bush once remarked that he learned more from CNN than from intelligence briefings by the CIA.

Beyond CNN, Turner built a vast media empire that included TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies. He also owned major sports franchises including the Atlanta Braves baseball team and Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

Known for his outspoken personality, Turner earned nicknames such as “Captain Outrageous” and “The Mouth of the South.”

He was also a celebrated yachtsman, winning the America’s Cup in 1977, and later became one of the world’s leading philanthropists after donating $1 billion to the United Nations and supporting environmental and clean energy initiatives.

Turner was married to actress Jane Fonda between 1991 and 2001.

In 2018, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder.

Veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour described Turner as a man who “created an unstoppable media revolution for the benefit of all humankind.”

His death marks the end of an era for global television journalism and the modern cable news industry he helped create.

President Ruto Welcomes New UK, Portugal and Namibia Ambassadors to Kenya

By Andrew Kariuki

President William Ruto on Wednesday received Letters of Credence from three newly appointed ambassadors to Kenya during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.

The envoys accredited to Kenya are Ambassador Paulo Neves Pocinho of Portugal, Ambassador Matt Baugh of the United Kingdom, and Ambassador Gabriel Pandureni Sinimbo of Namibia.

During the ceremony, President Ruto welcomed the diplomats and urged them to strengthen relations and cooperation between Kenya and their respective countries.

“On my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Kenya, I extend a warm welcome to you and encourage you to deepen cooperation and expand opportunities for the mutual benefit of our countries,” President Ruto said.

Ambassador Paulo Neves Pocinho previously served as Portugal’s ambassador to Pakistan with additional accreditation to Afghanistan, and later as ambassador to Qatar from 2022.

A career diplomat since joining Portugal’s Foreign Service in 1990, Pocinho has served in various diplomatic missions including Mexico, Paris, Newark and Goa, as well as Portugal’s Mission to the Council of Europe.

The Portuguese envoy studied philosophy at the University of Coimbra and is married with three children.

LSK President Charles Kanjama Raises Alarm Over President Samia Suluhu Remarks on “Taming” East African Gen Z Activism

By Andrew Kariuki

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Charles Kanjama has criticised recent remarks by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan suggesting joint regional action against youth-led civic activism in East Africa.

President Suluhu made the comments on Monday during a joint address with President William Ruto at State House in Dar es Salaam, where she appeared to call for coordinated efforts to deal with Gen Z activists demanding accountability and good governance.

“There is no need to be divided, to celebrate the vices that happen on either side. If they show up in Kenya, they are ours as well, and we should jointly deal with them, and the same should be done in Tanzania,” Suluhu stated.

“The word democracy should not taint our countries and our cultures. It has no formula. Your democracy is not the same as our democracy.”

Her remarks have since sparked debate across the region, with rights groups and legal experts raising concerns over freedom of expression and civic space.

Responding to the comments, Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama said constitutional rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of maintaining order.

“Kenya’s legal framework does not permit the use of force, coercion or punitive measures against citizens for the peaceful exercise of their rights,” Kanjama said.

“Articles 27, 28 and 29 protect equality, dignity, and freedom from cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. These safeguards are absolute.”

The LSK President maintained that peaceful civic participation by young people is protected under the Constitution and warned against attempts to criminalise youth activism.

“Constitutional rights are not negotiable, and they are not subject to suppression in the name of order,” he stated.

“Any attempt to undermine these freedoms will be met with firm institutional resistance through legal, civic and regional accountability mechanisms.”

Kanjama further urged governments within the East African Community to engage constructively with citizens rather than respond through intimidation or suppression.

The exchange comes amid increasing political activism among young people across East Africa, particularly online movements pushing for transparency, accountability and governance reforms.

KUCCPS Issues Final Call as University, College Application Deadline Closes Tonight

By Andrew Kariuki

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has issued a final appeal to 2025 KCSE candidates to complete and submit their university and college applications before the midnight deadline.

In a statement released on Wednesday, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr Agnes Mercy Wahome said the placement portal will officially close on May 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

“Many students have selected their courses and placed them in the ‘course basket’ but have not clicked the final submission button,” Dr Wahome said.

“Adding programmes in the course basket is not an application. You must complete the process and submit your choices before the midnight deadline to be considered in this first round of placement.”

KUCCPS noted that thousands of students had begun the application process but were yet to finalise their submissions.

According to the placement agency, out of the 268,714 candidates who attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ in the 2025 KCSE examinations, 207,308 had successfully submitted applications by Wednesday morning, representing 77 percent.

Dr Wahome assured candidates and parents that there is enough capacity across universities and technical institutions this year, with more than 1.4 million available slots nationwide.

The available opportunities include 322,396 university spaces and over 1.1 million slots in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions spread across 508 public and private institutions.

She also encouraged students to consider technical and skill-based courses, citing strong performance in practical subjects such as electricity, drawing and design, music, and woodwork.

“No student will be left behind. Following the closure of the portal tonight, we will process applications and then re-open for a second revision from May 16 to May 22, 2026, for those who may need to adjust their choices,” she said.

KUCCPS warned that candidates who fail to submit their applications before the deadline risk missing placement opportunities during the first selection phase.
