KNH Warns Public to Collect 480 Unclaimed Bodies Within 7 days

Kenyatta National Hospital has announced that it is holding hundreds of unclaimed bodies at its mortuary, urging members of the public to come forward and identify their loved ones within a week.

In a notice on Tuesday, March 24, the hospital revealed that a total of 480 bodies remain unclaimed at its Farewell Home, prompting plans for legal disposal should no claims be made within the given timeframe.

The hospital stated that among the unclaimed bodies are both adults and children, with records indicating that 102 are adults while 378 are children.

“Kenyatta National Hospital is in possession of a number of unclaimed bodies at its Farewell Home. Interested members of the public are therefore requested to identify and collect the bodies within 7 days, failure to which the hospital will seek authority from the courts to dispose of them,” the notice read.

According to the Public Health Act Cap 242, no body should be kept in a public mortuary for more than ten days.

If the body remains unclaimed beyond this period, a daily penalty fee may be charged for each additional day it stays in the facility.

However, the law allows for exceptions in cases where delays are caused by legal or administrative reasons.

In such situations, the next of kin is required to notify the Medical Officer of Health in writing within the initial ten-day period, after which a formal decision is issued regarding continued preservation.

Failure to comply with these regulations constitutes an offence under the law, punishable by a fine, imprisonment, or both.

In practice, when bodies remain unclaimed after the stipulated period, hospitals typically issue public notices and, upon expiry of the notice, seek court authorization to dispose of the bodies.

Kenya Met: Rains to Continue, Intensity to Reduce By End of the Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has announced that rainfall will continue across several parts of the country this week.

In a weather forecast on Tuesday, March 24, the weatherman predicted that the intensity of the rains would decrease as the week progresses.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country, though amounts are likely to reduce as the week progresses,” read the forecast in part.

The department also predicted high daytime temperatures of above 30°C in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.

On the other hand, parts of the Central Highlands and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro will experience cool nights of below 10°C.

“Daytime temperatures above 30°C expected in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya. Cool nights (<10°C) likely in parts of the Central Highlands and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro,” KMD added.

The forecast comes days after the Ministry of Interior warned of heavy showers across several counties.

In a statement, CS Kipchumba Murkomen said the rains would peak over the weekend before easing slightly, though several regions will continue to receive rainfall.

“The rains are expected to intensify between tomorrow, Friday, and Monday, before gradually easing on Tuesday.

“However, rainfall will still persist in several regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the central highlands, including Nairobi,” said Murkomen.

The Interior CS further outlined specific safety measures for residents, particularly those in vulnerable regions.

“Residents are advised to avoid driving or walking through flowing water; be cautious of flash floods, even in areas where it has not rained heavily; avoid sheltering under trees or near metal structures during storms; and remain at high alert in landslide-prone areas, especially in hilly regions such as the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya slopes,” Murkomen advised.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an employee of the Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company in connection with an alleged bribery scheme.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 24, the agency said the suspect was apprehended following a complaint from a member of the public.

“The suspect, Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, a Leak Detection Officer, was apprehended on March 23, 2026, following a complaint by a member of the public who claimed the officer demanded Ksh15,000 to facilitate the replacement of a confiscated water meter in Langa Langa Estate,” the statement read.

Opposition Leaders To Move to Court Over Tuju’s Arrest

United Opposition leaders have announced plans to move to court following the controversial arrest of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 24, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa said they will demand due process and respect for the rule of law, the Constitution, and all laws, including the National Police Service Act.

He claimed that the conduct of the police during Tuju’s arrest failed to meet the standards outlined in the National Police Service Act, which requires officers to operate as a service guided by professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.

“Today, we head to Court after all the Tuju arrest drama yesterday, where he was manhandled by DCI officers who forcefully tried to remove him from Hon Kalonzo’s car and bundle him into their Subaru, in the process seriously injuring his back that had been previously injured in a car accident. Also injured was a young medic who was attending to him at Karen police station,” said Wamalwa.

The DAP-K leader went on to raise concerns about the issue surrounding Tuju, suggesting intimidation from the state.

“There is more than meets the eye in the manner the Tuju issue has been handled by the State and the level of force deployed from his Dari hotel where hundreds of goons and police officers, Land Cruisers and Subarus swarmed at ungodly hours, to his Karen residence and Karen police station where he was roughed up with his lawyers and doctors,” added Wamalwa.

Tuju was arrested and detained on Monday, March 23, moments after he resurfaced following reports of him missing.

According to Lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, police officers bundled the ex-Cabinet Secretary into a Subaru vehicle.

“We were told that we are coming to Karen Police Station. They have pushed him into a Subaru and said that they want to take him to another station,” he stated.

The lawyer also claimed that Tuju was injured by the officers in the process of arresting him.

“As we speak, Tuju is unwell; they have hurt his back. That was serious violence, and we are waiting for the doctors to advise us on how to deal with this medical emergency,” Njiru claimed.

Addressing the media on Monday evening, DCI Boss Mohammed Amin said Tuju was at his Karen residence throughout the period he was reported missing.

Amin revealed that Tuju’s phone signal was traced to his Karen residence despite him switching it off on Saturday.

“Based on solid intelligence and meticulous forensic analysis, the DCI conclusively, and I am saying this without an iota of doubt, Tuju was physically present within his residence throughout the period in question.

“Even at the precise time his mobile phone was switched off at 18:18 hours on 21st March 2026, he was at his Karen residence,” the DCI boss disclosed.
