DCP’s Gachagua Says Blogger Maureen Kinyua Died in Road Accident Amid ‘Murder’ Allegations

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) on Wednesday, March 18, denounced claims that party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s aide, the late Maureen Gathigia Kinyua, was murdered.

In a statement addressed to the public, DCP maintained that Kinyua died in a road accident and was not murdered.

“Popular blogger and social media personality Maureen Gathigia Kinyua tragically passed away on May 24, 2019, in a road traffic accident near Sagana Catholic Church in Mathira, Nyeri County. Investigations into the incident classified it as a hit-and-run, and there is no official evidence linking her death to murder or foul play,” the statement read in part.

The party took a swipe at President William Ruto for claiming that Gachagua was allegedly involved in Kinyua’s death.

DCP termed the claims as baseless and could potentially cause distress to the family of the deceased.

“Despite these facts, misinformation has circulated online suggesting that Maureen’s death was a murder. Such claims are unverified and baseless, and they risk causing unnecessary distress to her family, friends, and supporters.

“Media experts and civil society leaders emphasise that public figures, including President William Ruto, should exercise caution and avoid making statements based on unverified claims,” the statement continued.

The political outfit further urged media outlets to accurately report the news and uphold journalistic integrity as a sign of respect to the family.

The driver involved in the incident, according to the statement, was subsequently charged in Karatina Court with causing death by dangerous driving, and later released on a Ksh150,000 bond while awaiting further legal proceedings; thus is no possible way Gachagua could be linked with the death of the blogger.

Questions over the cause of the death of the popular blogger have resurfaced online, sparking confusion after remarks made on March 17, where President William Ruto accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of having a hand in the death. Ruto was speaking during a development tour in Busia County.

The public spat between the United Opposition and the Kenya Kwanza Administration, marked by fierce exchanges characterized by name-calling and personal attacks.

At the time of the blogger’s death, Ruto, who was then the Deputy President, personally called Maureen’s mother to offer condolences, describing her as a “keen, dedicated and thorough” worker for the Jubilee fraternity.

Orengo, Babu React to Winnie Odinga’s Endorsement for ODM Deputy Party Leader Position

Siaya Governor James Orengo, on Wednesday, March 18, watered down Linda Ground’s endorsement of EALA MP Winnie Odinga for the ODM Deputy Party Leader position.

Speaking during a press briefing, Orengo stated that Winnie was firmly with the Linda Mwananchi group and that offering her the leadership role would not sway her.

He added that the EALA MP’s sentiments and actions have always stated clearly the side she belongs to, and that she was keen on honouring the late Raila Odinga’s legacy.

“If you listen to what she has been saying since her father died, you will know where her soul is. For me, I would not really care where her body is because he soul is with her father and Linda Mwananchi,” he stated.

On his part, Emabakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino told Winnie not to associate with the Linda Ground faction, which he claimed was a sinking ship.

Babu argued that she would achieve more with Linda Mwananchi and was way above the rival faction.

“Winnie is like a turtle that is bigger than the pond that she is going to. She should join the ocean, and this is where it is at, Linda Mwananchi,”  he reiterated.

On his part, ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Ososti welcomed the endorsement but warned Winnie that her endorsement was part of a sinister plot.

He claimed that the ODM Linda Ground faction wanted to use her to justify the outcome of a national delegates convention, which he alleged would be rigged.

“She can easily win any seat, but as a caution, I want to tell her that she needs to tread very carefully because those on Linda Ground would want to use her to justify what they can do on 27; to confirm people without a competition,” Osotsi stated.

The sentiments from the Linda Mwananchi group came a day after ODM Nairobi County Chairman George Aladwa announced Winnie’s endorsement for the Orange Party Deputy Party Leader.

Aladwa explained that Nairobi was not represented in the Party’s top national leadership since the death of Raila.

Winnie accepted the endorsement and made it clear that she would not leave the ODM party.

Kericho Man Charged with Murder of Centenarian Mother

By Peter John

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has arraigned a man accused of killing his 100-year-old mother in Kericho County.

Julius Cheruiyot Bett is facing a murder charge under Sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution alleges that he caused the death of his mother, Grace Chelangat, on March 7, 2026, at Kiptere Location in Sigowet Sub-County.

According to the prosecution, led by David Fedha, the accused is said to have run over the elderly woman using a motor vehicle, leading to her death.

Investigators believe the incident was linked to a dispute over family property, with claims that the suspect had been persistently demanding inheritance.

Bett denied the charge when he appeared before Justice Joseph Sergon.

The court declined to grant him bail after the prosecution successfully opposed his release, citing undisclosed grounds.

The case is scheduled for mention on May 12, 2026, for pre-trial directions.

Lebanon: Israeli airstrike flattens Beirut apartment block, killing at least six

An Israeli airstrike struck an apartment building in Bachoura, central Beirut, completely flattening it as day broke on Wednesday.

Two earlier strikes on residential apartments in other central Beirut neighborhoods early Wednesday killed at least six people and wounded 24 others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

The strike hit shortly after dawn on 18 March, sending thick smoke over central Beirut as emergency teams rushed to the scene.

The Israeli army said it had warned residents to evacuate about an hour before the attack, which flattened the building and damaged nearby vehicles on a busy road.

The building had already been targeted three times on 12 March without collapsing, marking a fourth strike in less than a week.

Israel claims the site was used by Hezbollah to store large sums of money, though no evidence has been made public.

The attack comes as Israel intensifies operations in southern Lebanon in response to cross-border fire.

Strikes in central Beirut, once rare, have become more frequent, raising concerns over civilian risk and further escalation in the conflict.

Two Men Sentenced to Death for Violent Robbery in Maua

By Peter John

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has secured a death sentence against two men convicted of robbery with violence in Maua, Meru County.

Douglas Muriithi and Antony Mugendi were found guilty of attacking and robbing a woman on the night of September 6, 2024, in Maua Location, Igembe South Sub-County.

According to court proceedings, the two assailants, armed with crude weapons including pangas, metal rods, and timber frames, confronted the victim, identified as Janice Gacheri.

They stole cash amounting to KSh 5,700, 87 kilograms of sugar valued at KSh 13,050, and 17 kilograms of onions worth KSh 850, bringing the total value of the stolen items to KSh 19,600.

The court heard that the attackers also inflicted injuries on the victim during the incident, a factor that contributed to the severity of the charge.

In its determination, the court found that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of the two accused persons.

They were subsequently sentenced to death in accordance with the law governing robbery with violence.

Busia Governor Paul Otuoma Sued Over Alleged Assault and Intimidation of Boda Boda Rider

By Andrew Kariuki

Busia Governor Paul Otuoma has been sued at the Milimani High Court, with a petitioner seeking Ksh100 million in damages over allegations that he assaulted a boda boda rider during a public event and that the victim was later subjected to intimidation.

The petition accuses the county boss of gross misconduct over an incident said to have occurred on March 6, 2026, at Bukiri Market in Funyula Constituency during a county function involving the distribution of certified maize seeds.

According to court documents, Yusuf Suleiman Hamisi, a 31 year old boda boda rider, alleges that he was attacked while standing in a queue, claiming the governor kicked him in the groin without provocation.

The alleged incident was reportedly witnessed by members of the public and captured on video that later circulated on social media.

Through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Hamisi further claims that he faced obstruction when seeking medical treatment at Sioport and Ruambo Sub-County hospitals, alleging that the interference was linked to the governor’s office.

The matter was reported at Sioport Police Station, but the petition states that the complainant began receiving threats shortly after lodging the report.

Court filings further allege that unknown individuals later visited his home demanding that he withdraw the complaint, and that he was briefly abducted before escaping and going into hiding.

The petitioner argues that the alleged actions violated his constitutional rights, including the right to dignity, security of the person, equality and fair administrative action, and also breached leadership and integrity standards under Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act.

Among the orders sought, the petitioner wants the court to declare Governor Otuoma unfit to hold public office, compel investigative agencies to take action and direct the Busia County Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings under Article 181 of the Constitution.

The petition also seeks orders requiring the provision of security and medical care for the complainant, as well as the commencement of investigations into the alleged incident.

Senegal to appeal CAF’s decision to hand AFCON title to Morocco

The Senegalese Football Federation has announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the country was stripped of the Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Confederation of African Football announced the decision on Tuesday evening to award victory to Morocco two months after the acrimonious conclusion to the tournament.

An appeal board determined the Senegal team had forfeited the match when they left the field in protest at a disputed penalty deep in stoppage time.

Responding via a statement on X, the Senegal federation branded the decision “iniquitous, unprecedented and unacceptable”, saying it “threw discredit on African football.”

“For the defence of the rights and interests of Senegalese football, the federation will engage, with the shortest delay, an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne,” the statement added.

Abdoulaye Seydou Sow, secretary general of the Senegalese Football Federation, told the public broadcaster Radiodiffusion Télévision Sénégalaise late Tuesday: “We will not back down. The law is on our side.”

He called the ruling a “shame for Africa.”

Earlier on Wednesday, L’Équipe quoted a Senegal federation member as saying, “We are outraged. There is a CAF executive committee meeting on March 29, it will be World War 3.”

The walk-off, instigated by Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, led to a lengthy delay, and, when the game was belatedly restarted, Brahim Díaz saw his spot-kick saved by Édouard Mendy.

Pape Gueye went on to score the winning goal in extra time but there was unrest in the crowd and recriminations in the aftermath.

Having studied the circumstances, the appeal board took the unprecedented step of reversing the result, awarding a 3-0 win to Morocco, who are now celebrating their second AFCON title.

US woman, who wrote book on grief after husband’s death, found guilty of murdering him

(AP) — A Utah woman was convicted Monday of aggravated murder after poisoning her husband with fentanyl and self-publishing a children’s book about coping with grief.

Prosecutors said Kouri Richins slipped five times the lethal dose of the synthetic opioid into a cocktail that her husband Eric Richins drank in March 2022 at their home outside the affluent ski town of Park City. They said she was $4.5 million in debt and falsely believed that when her husband died, she would inherit his estate worth more than $4 million.

“She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money,” Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth said.

Richins, 35, stared at the floor and took deep breaths as the judge read the verdict.

She was also convicted of other felonies, including attempted murder for trying to poison her husband weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day with a fentanyl-laced sandwich that made him black out. Jurors also found Richins guilty of forgery and fraudulently claiming insurance benefits after his death.

The jury deliberated for just under three hours. Afterward, family members on both sides of the case left the courtroom hugging and crying.

“Honestly I feel like we’re all in shock. It’s been a long time coming,” said Eric Richins’ sister, Amy Richins, adding that the family can now focus on honoring her brother and supporting his sons. “Just very happy that we got justice for my brother.”

Relatives of Kouri Richins left the courthouse without speaking to media.

Sentencing was scheduled for May 13, the day her husband would have turned 44. The aggravated murder charge alone carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

What was scheduled to be a five-week trial was cut short when the defendant waived her right to testify, and her legal team abruptly rested its case without calling any witnesses. Her attorneys said they were confident that prosecutors did not produce enough evidence over the past three weeks to convict her of murder.

‘A wife becoming a black widow’

The prosecution said Richins, a real estate agent focused on flipping houses, was deep in debt and planning a future with another man. She had opened numerous life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, with benefits totaling about $2 million, prosecutors said.

Richins also faces 26 other money-related criminal charges in a separate case that has not yet gone to trial.

Earlier Monday, prosecutors showed the jury text messages between Richins and Robert Josh Grossman, the man with whom she was allegedly having an affair, in which she fantasized about leaving her husband, gaining millions in a divorce and marrying Grossman.

The internet search history from Richins’ phone included “what is a lethal.dose.of.fetanayl,” “luxury prisons for the rich America” and “if someone is poisned what does it go down on the death certificate as,” a digital forensic analyst testified.

Bloodworth replayed for the jury a clip of Richins’ 911 call from the night of her husband’s death. That’s “not ‘the sound of a wife becoming a widow,’” he said, quoting the defense’s opening statement. “It’s the sound of a wife becoming a black widow.”

Defense attorney Wendy Lewis responded that the prosecution “looks at facts one way and sees a witch, but if you look at those facts another way, you see a widow.”

‘Give us the details that will ensure Kouri gets convicted’

The defense focused on trying to discredit the prosecution’s star witness, Carmen Lauber, a housekeeper for the family who claimed to have sold Richins fentanyl on multiple occasions.

Lewis argued Lauber did not deal fentanyl and was motivated to lie for legal protection. Lauber said in early interviews that she never dealt the synthetic opioid, but later said she did after investigators informed her that Eric Richins died of a fentanyl overdose, the defense noted.

Richins had asked Lauber for “the Michael Jackson stuff,” which Bloodworth said likely refers to the drug combination that killed the singer.

“She knows she wants it because it is lethal,” he argued.

The housekeeper was already in a drug court program as an alternative to incarceration on other charges when authorities arrested her in connection with the Richins case, investigators said. She had also violated some conditions of drug court.

The defense showed a video of law enforcement warning Lauber that they could pull her drug court deal and that she could face a lengthy prison sentence.

“Give us the details that will ensure Kouri gets convicted of murder,” a man in the video said.

Lauber was granted immunity for her cooperation in the case. She testified that she felt a need to “step up and take accountability of my part in this.”

Children’s book becomes a tool for prosecutors

Shortly before her arrest in May 2023, Richins self-published the children’s book “Are You with Me?” about coping with the loss of a parent. She promoted it on local TV and radio stations, which prosecutors pointed to in arguing that Richins planned the killing and tried to cover it up.

Summit County Sheriff’s detective Jeff O’Driscoll, the lead investigator on the case, testified that Richins paid a ghostwriting company to write the book for her.

O’Driscoll said shortly after Richins’ arrest, her mother sent the book to the sheriff’s office in an anonymous package with a note saying it exemplified the “true Kouri, a devoted wife and adoring mother.”

Prosecutors also showed the jury excerpts of a letter found in Richins’ jail cell that they said appeared to outline testimony for her mother and brother. In the six-page letter, Richins instructed her brother to tell her former attorney that Eric Richins confided in him about getting fentanyl from Mexico and “gets high every night.”

Defense attorneys said the letter contained a fictional story their client was working on. They argued that Eric Richins was addicted to painkillers and asked his wife to procure opioids for him.

However, Richins told police on the night of her husband’s death that he had no history of illicit drug use, according to body camera footage shown in court.
