Ten dead in India hospital fire

A fire at a government-run hospital in eastern India killed at least 10 critically ill patients who were admitted to the trauma care unit, officials said on Monday.

Building fires are common in India due to a lack of firefighting equipment and a routine disregard for safety regulations.

The fire broke out early Monday on the first floor of the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha state’s Cuttack city, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told reporters.

“A short circuit caused the fire in the trauma ICU ward where patients were being treated,” he said, adding that 23 patients were present on the floor at the time of the incident.

Ten people died following the blaze, while the remaining patients were moved to other wards, he added.

At least 11 staff members suffered burn injuries as they tried to rescue the patients.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “deeply painful” in a post on social media and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.

He also announced compensation of $2,160 to affected families.

Electrical short circuits, often caused by poorly maintained wiring, remain the leading cause of fire incidents in India.

In 2024, a fire at a private hospital in the southern state of Tamil Nadu killed at least six people and injured more than two dozen.

The same year, 10 newborns were killed when a fire engulfed a hospital in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

There is only one ODM under Oburu’s leadership, Governor Nassir says

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has brushed off claims of divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), to which he is a deputy party leader.

Nassir responded to concerns about the expected visit to Mombasa by members associated with the Linda Mwananchi wing of the party.

Speaking during a bursary distribution event at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Changamwe, the Governor said political engagement should be allowed to proceed peacefully, but cautioned against attempts to portray internal divisions within the party.

The Governor stated that ODM remains united under its leadership and rejected suggestions that there are factions within the party.

“There is only one ODM under the leadership of our Party Leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga,” he said, dismissing narratives on the existence of rival formations within the party.

Addressing the planned visit, Governor Nassir maintained that anyone is free to engage the public in a peaceful and lawful manner, adding that such political activities should not be sensationalized.

“In a democracy people are free to organize and present their views to the public. If they wish to come to Mombasa and speak to residents, they are free to do so provided it is done peacefully and within the law,” he said.

He argued that Mombasa residents are politically aware and capable of listening to different viewpoints before making their own decisions.

“Let them come, have their say and the people will make their choice,” the Governor added.

Governor Nassir further called on political leaders and supporters across the divide to maintain calm and respect for the law.

He stressed that Mombasa has long maintained a tradition of political maturity and tolerance even in moments of disagreement.

Fred Matiang’i slams State House spending, vows major budget cuts if elected as president

Jubilee presidential flagbearer Fred Matiang’i has criticised what he described as excessive government spending at State House Nairobi, pledging to significantly reduce the budget if elected.

Speaking during a church service at Weithaga ACK Church in Murang’a County on Sunday, Matiang’i questioned the growing allocation to the executive compared to other public institutions such as the Kenya National Trading Corporation.

He said government spending should prioritise essential services and development programmes.

“Why should State House require more funding than some key public institutions?” he posed, adding that public resources should be managed prudently.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary said that if elected, he would reduce the State House budget by up to 80 per cent and redirect funds to priority sectors of the economy.

Matiang’i also raised concerns about what he described as policy uncertainty in the education sector, saying Kenyans expect clearer direction and consistent solutions from the government.

He maintained that leadership should be defined by accountability and measurable results, noting that public office should focus on delivering tangible improvements to citizens’ lives.

The Jubilee flagbearer further said Kenya’s development has always depended on hard work and collective effort, adding that he is ready to work with leaders across the political divide for the country’s progress.

Matiang’i was attending the laying of a foundation stone for a new conference centre at the church, where he was received by Timothy Gichere of the Diocese of Mount Kenya Central.

KMPDU threatens strike over ‘mysterious’ arrests of Nairobi Hospital officials

Several officials linked to The Nairobi Hospital remained in police custody for a second night on Sunday, as the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) warned it could call a strike over what it termed mysterious arrests, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) also raising alarm.

Those detained include elderly doctor Job Obwaka, a director at the Kenya Hospital Association and an admitting consultant at The Nairobi Hospital, and the hospital board vice chairperson Samson Kinyanjui, who are being held at Muthaiga Police Station.

Another director, Valery Gaya, is being held at Pangani Police Station alongside former director Chris Bichage.

Officials from KMPDU, LSK, human rights activists and family members went to Muthaiga Police Station demanding answers from officers in charge over the detention of Obwaka and Kinyanjui. KMPDU said Obwaka was arrested on Saturday morning from his private clinic while attending to patients.

“Obwaka was abducted at his private clinic Saturday morning while attending to patients,” KMPDU’s secretary general said.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo Kanjama said Obwaka was arrested by plain-clothed officers and questioned why the officials were being held without clear charges.

Obwaka’s son said the doctor has a heart condition that needs medical care, adding that he is not a flight risk and should be released.

KMPDU and LSK said they would consider mass action if the detained officials are not released by midnight, accusing police of violating court orders, including anticipatory bail.

Kanjama said the society supports any civil action announced by KMPDU.

By Sunday evening, attempts to obtain official charge sheets from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had not succeeded.

Kanjama said the occurrence book indicated the matter related to a registration issue tied to the Nairobi Hospital’s 2024 AGM, while KMPDU officials said they had been told the issue involves alleged forgery.

Nairobi Hospital board ‘living in fear’ amid claims of intimidation and takeover bid as President Ruto’s name linked with row

Source: Citizen Digital –Citizen TV established that President William Ruto’s name has been invoked in a series of meetings in which senior government operatives are alleged to have pushed for changes in the board of The Nairobi Hospital, amid claims of intimidation and an intensifying scramble for control of the multi‑billion shilling facility.

Sources familiar with the meetings told Citizen TV that on Monday, March 9, 2026, the chair of the Nairobi Hospital board, Dr Barcley Onyambu, was summoned to Harambee House, the Office of the President, and instructed to cause three vacancies in the board.

The sources said Onyambu was given names to fill the positions and told the President wanted the changes effected within the week.

The officials at the meeting were described as being associated with the Office of the Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

The claims have emerged against a backdrop of boardroom wrangles that insiders say have simmered for more than a year. Citizen TV understands that members of the board have been living in fear, with sources citing an atmosphere of intimidation that includes threats of arrest.

The arrest of Dr Job Obwaka has been cited by insiders as a turning point.

Citizen TV has also established that other meetings have allegedly been held at both Harambee House and State House to discuss the management of the hospital.

In one meeting, a senior official is quoted as saying: “The President says though Nairobi Hospital is a private hospital, it has a public character.”

As the pressure builds, Citizen TV has reviewed internal communication from the hospital that, according to sources, points to earlier co-options into the board.

In a memo dated February 6, 2026, Nairobi Hospital Company Secretary Gilbert Nyamweya announced the co-option of Dr Sylvester Okumu Kasuku and Mr Moses Agoi Ondaba as board members. Sources said the two names had been submitted from Harambe House.

Insiders further alleged that there has been pressure to force up to nine changes in the 14‑member board, which would hand majority control of board decisions and the direction of the hospital.

The Nairobi Hospital is run by the Kenya Hospital Association, a club-like membership entity said to have more than 3,000 members, and is structured as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act.

Citizen TV understands that the ownership structure has become central to the dispute.

Insiders say there is external pressure to convert the institution into a company limited by shares, a move that would fundamentally alter control of the hospital.

The Kenya Hospital Association is a non-profit entity, but it operates a hospital whose monthly earnings are estimated by insiders at Ksh1.5 billion to Ksh1.6 billion, making its board and ownership structure a high-stakes prize.

It is in that context that board members say they have faced intimidation, including threats of arrest over alleged money laundering.

Citizen TV has seen a list of 34 vehicles said to be linked to alleged proceeds of money laundering, although the hospital has maintained that most of the vehicles belong to staff members.

Insiders told Citizen TV that the arrests of Dr Job Obwaka and Samson Kinyanjui are being viewed within the board as part of an active move to take over the hospital.

Fernandes overtakes Beckham to set Man Utd assists record

Bruno Fernandes has overtaken David Beckham as Manchester United’s most prolific provider of assists in a single Premier League season, with his two against Aston Villa taking him to 16 for the 2025/26 campaign.

Beckham’s club-record tally of 15 assists in the 1999/00 season was surpassed by Fernandes on Sunday as he inspired a 3-1 win for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese notched his 15th assist of the current campaign when he delivered a pinpoint corner for Casemiro to head home in the 53rd minute. That was Fernandes’ ninth dead-ball assist in 2025/26; he then produced his seventh in open play, with a sublime pass for Matheus Cunha to put Michael Carrick’s side 2-0 ahead.

It was a fitting way  for Fernandes to break Beckham’s club record that had stood for over two decades.

He is also just the third Man Utd player in the Premier League era to reach 100 goals and 100 assists in all competitions, joining an elite group with Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs.

The Man Utd talisman could yet break the record for the most Premier League assists in a season, 20, which is jointly held by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20).

He needs to assist only five more goals for Man Utd in their remaining eight matches to set a new record of 21.

Raphinha bag hat-trick as Barcelona thrash Sevilla 5-2

Raphinha bagged a hat-trick as Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-2 to restore their four-point lead at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

After Real Madrid cut the gap by beating Elche on Saturday the Spanish champions responded by romping to a comfortable victory.

Dani Olmo and Joao Cancelo also struck for Hansi Flick’s side, who host Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Fans streamed to the stadium to vote in the club’s presidential elections, with either Joan Laporta or Victor Font to be announced the new chief later on Sunday night.

After the 1-1 draw in Newcastle in the last-16 first leg, Flick left Lamine Yamal on the bench and handed youngster Xavi Espart his first start, at right-back.

Barcelona were handed two penalties by a sorry Sevilla side to get off to the perfect start at the partially-rebuilt Camp Nou, which finally received clearance to open the north stand.

Around 56,000 fans attended and they were able to watch a fairly straightforward rout of the Andalucians, 14th.

Djibril Sow clumsily clipped rampaging Barca full-back Cancelo in the box and Raphinha dinked home from the spot to open the scoring in the ninth minute.

The Brazilian winger was afforded another penalty to put Barca two goals up when Jose Angel Carmona, lying on the floor, handled as Cancelo tried to dribble around him.

This time Raphinha fired it low to the left and although Odysseas Vlachodimos went the right way he could not keep it out.

The hosts netted a third in the 38th minute when Marc Bernal’s deflected cross from the left found Olmo, who produced a clinical finish.

Sevilla pulled one back before the break when Juanlu Sanchez got in behind Cancelo and crossed for Oso to score unmarked at the back post.

Raphinha completed his hat-trick early in the second half with a heavily deflected shot as Barca strolled in the spring sunshine.

Cancelo capped an impressive attacking display with a goal of his own, driving into the box and finishing through Vlachodimos’s legs.

Barca coach Flick sent on 21-year-old midfielder Gavi for the final 10 minutes, for his first appearance since August after suffering a severe knee injury.

Sow pulled another one back for Sevilla in stoppage time, nodding home Oso’s cross, with Barcelona already thinking about Newcastle’s visit on Wednesday.

President Ruto says WRC Safari Rally to be fully funded by private sector from 2027

This is the last year the government will be funding the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally, President William Ruto has announced.

The President said beginning next year, the private sector will take over the responsibility for hosting, managing, promoting and funding the event.

He noted that this will enable the government to channel funds into the promotion of sports  in schools and development of infrastructure.

“From next year, this event will be fully funded by the private sector,” he said.

Switching plans wizardHe particularly singled out for commendation the Kenya Commercial Bank, SportsPesa, Safaricom and Kenya Airways for their support.

The President was speaking at the WRC Safari Rally at Hell’s Gate, Nakuru County, in the company of Cabinet Secretaries Salim Mvurya (Sports) and Rebecca Miano (Tourism), and Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, among others.

The 2026 WRC Safari Rally was won by Takamoto Katsuta and Aaron Johnston of Toyota Gazoo Racing.

The second position was taken by Adrien Fourmaux and Alexandre Coria of Hyundai Shell Mobis, while third place went to Sami Pajari and Marko Salminen of Toyota Gazoo Racing.

On the promotion of sports in Kenya, President Ruto pointed out that Kenya has hosted several international events, including the African Nations Championship, the Rugby 7s tournament, Magical Kenya Open and the Safari Rally, demonstrating that the country is capable of hosting world-class competitions.

“Our country remains a welcoming destination for the world,” he said.

He noted that such events have a profound impact on the economy, including supporting businesses, creating employment, stimulating tourism and generating valuable foreign exchange.

He commended cooperation between the WRC and African Overseas Mobility, saying it has partnered with the Kenya Motor Sport Federation to produce the first affordable cross car and donated two Toyota Starlets to support the Rally Academy.

At the same time, President Ruto has assured Kenyans that this is the last day they will endure traffic jams on the road between Nakuru and Nairobi.

By next year, the President explained, the government will have completed the dualling of the Rironi-Mau Summit road, allowing a congestion-free travel to and from Naivasha.

Mr Mvurya commended the support the private sector had offered, noting that the WRC Safari Rally has consequently become more spectacular.

Ms Miano noted that the WRC Safari Rally has resulted in 100 per cent occupancy of hotels in Nakuru County and its environs.

“We are happy that people from the East African Community have showed up in large numbers,” she said.

The Tourism CS also said Kenya is establishing itself as a premium tourism destination that has very few of what other countries have to offer.

Mombasa United maintain NSL lead with home victory over Kabati Youth

Mombasa United extended their unbeaten home run in the National Super League after defeating Kabati Youth 2-0 at the Mombasa Sports Club grounds on Sunday afternoon.‎

‎The hosts scored once in each half through Denis Toeri and Samuel Atta to secure another crucial victory and maintain their lead at the top of the National Super League standings.

‎Both teams began the match cautiously, maintaining low defensive blocks that limited attacking opportunities in the early stages.‎

‎Mombasa United eventually broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Denis Toeri converted from the penalty spot after Amos Ochieng handled the ball inside the box, sending Kabati Youth goalkeeper Edwin Ndung’u the wrong way.

Kabati Youth nearly responded five minutes later, but Dominic McFerran missed a clear opportunity as his shot drifted wide of the left post.

‎United continued pushing for a second goal through striker David Mayson and midfielder Clinton Odiwuor, but their efforts failed to produce the breakthrough.

‎Just before halftime, Kabati Youth striker Tyson Sifuna nearly equalised after lobbing the ball over United goalkeeper Richard Ebenyo, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

‎The hosts went into the break leading 1-0.

‎Ten minutes into the second half, Kabati Youth created another chance when Dennis Ndung’u found space inside the penalty area, but his shot went over the crossbar.

‎In the 83rd minute, Fidel Omondi beat several Kabati defenders and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but failed to hit the target.

‎Mombasa United eventually sealed the win deep into stoppage time in the 92nd minute when striker Samuel Atta fired a low shot past Ndung’u, securing three valuable points.

The victory marked United’s 13th home win of the season and ensured they maintained their lead at the top of the National Super League table.

‎Speaking after the match, Mombasa United head coach Gilbert Selebwa welcomed the result despite admitting his side did not perform at their best.

“Sometimes you play well and win games, and sometimes you don’t play well but still win. Today was one of those days we didn’t play well, but got the win and collected another crucial three points at home,” he said.

‎Kabati Youth assistant coach Arnold Irungu, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating.

‎“We played well despite the loss. It’s hard luck, but in terms of officiating, I was not impressed, especially with the penalty they were given. It was not clear. However, we have to go back to the drawing board as we move forward,” Irungu said.

Manchester United cruise past Aston Villa to win 3-1 at Old Trafford

Manchester United consolidated their hold on the third rung of the Premier League table as they beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford.

A frenetic three-goal second-half followed a markedly pedestrian first, which produced just two clear-cut chances as United struggled to impose themselves against a physically formidable Villa back line.

But it did not take long for the hosts to break the deadlock in the second-half, as Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes once again combined, the former nodding the latter’s corner beyond the reach of Emi Martinez.

United failed to impose themselves thereafter, allowing Villa back into contention as Ross Barkley lashed one home to equalise.

But a devastating sequence of events then put the result beyond doubt as Matheus Cunha fired home from a superb Fernandes through-ball and Benjamin Sesko fired a third home mere minutes after coming off the bench.

The win puts United three points clear of Villa and six ahead of Chelsea, massively boosting their bid to return to the Champions League next season. It also takes Michael Carrick’s managerial record at Old Trafford to a flawless six wins from six.
