‘Leave Uhuru Kenyatta alone’ – Saboti MP Caleb Amisi tells Ruto allies

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has distanced the Linda Mwananchi movement from former President Uhuru Kenyatta, insisting the political outfit is independently funded and solely focused on preserving the legacy of the late “Baba.”

Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Amisi dismissed claims that Uhuru is backing the movement, challenging critics to hold him accountable instead.

“Linda Mwananchi has nothing to do with Uhuru Kenyatta. If you are looking for the founder, the sponsor, here he is, come for Caleb Amisi, leave Uhuru Kenyatta alone,” Amisi said.

“We sponsor ourselves and we do not need any person to come and help us preserve the legacy of Baba.”

The outspoken legislator also made sweeping remarks about Kenya’s political leadership, arguing that those who served under former President Daniel arap Moi should not be entrusted with leading change.

“For people to change this country, anyone who served in Moi’s government must go,” he stated.

“If you ever served in Moi’s government, you are part and parcel of the problem. You cannot be part and parcel of the solution to that problem you created.”

Amisi further hinted at his own presidential ambitions, revealing that he has encouraged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to consider a presidential bid, while making it clear he is prepared to step forward if that does not happen.

“I have told Sifuna, if you don’t run for President, Caleb Amisi will,” he declared.

On the future of Orange Democratic Movement, Amisi painted a bleak picture, claiming the party is steadily losing its identity and could cease to exist as an independent political force before the 2027 General Election.

“The rate at which ODM is going, there will be no ODM on the ballot come 2027. They will have merged with United Democratic Alliance and they will have one party called UDA,” he said.

His remarks are likely to spark fresh debate over opposition politics and the future political direction of the country.

ODM Alleges Orengo Duped the Party Ksh40 Million in ‘Fake’ Legal Fees

The ODM party on Tuesday, May 5, sensationally claimed that Siaya Governor James Orengo duped the party Ksh40 million by charging them legal fees for what was initially meant to be a pro-bono service.

In a statement issued to the press, ODM blasted Orengo for taking credit for the party’s Ksh12 billion claim from the Political Parties Fund, after leading the litigation process.

The ODM Communications Department claimed that its National  Executive Committee initiated the process of making the claim and that the Governor was only contacted for the litigation.

Orengo is accused of contracting another legal firm, then charging the party for legal services offered.

“Instead of instituting the proceedings through his own law firm, he conveniently introduced the firm of Ms Julie Soweto, which ultimately filed the petition.

“Following the Party’s success in the High Court in 2016 and subsequently in the Court of Appeal in 2018, demands for legal fees began to be made. Ms Soweto’s Law firm was paid Ksh 40 million by the party,” the statement read in part.

ODM disclosed that the hefty legal fees came as a shock to the departed party leader, the late Raila Odinga, who allegedly questioned Orengo’s character.

“The demand came as a surprise to everyone, including the Party Leader, the late Raila Odinga, who branded Orengo and his team ‘mercenaries’, ” the statement continued.

The Oburu Oginga-led party claims to have evidence that shows that the Siaya County Chief personally received the payments.

It further alleged that following the confusion, it was embroiled in a civil case at the High Court with the firm over legal fees worth hundreds of millions.

“The Party now finds itself embroiled in an ongoing legal dispute in the High Court with the Soweto Firm (in effect, associated with Gov. Orengo), with a claim of more than Ksh. 350 million for legal representation,” ODM noted

The statement came after Orego called out some leaders of the Linda Ground group for failing to acknowledge the legal groundwork he did that allowed them to claim the Ksh12 billion, and instead targeting him with personal attacks.

Nyando MP Jared Okello Loses Mother

Nyando Member of Parliament Jared Okello’s mother, Doris Okello, is dead.

The announcement was made by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party through a statement shared via social media on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

According to ODM, Mama Doris died on the night of Monday, May 4, 2026.

However, the Orange Party did not disclose the cause of death while sending their message of condolences to the lawmaker, who is also a member of the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC).

“Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon. Jared Okello, MP for Nyando and a member of our National Executive Committee (NEC) following the passing of the family matriarch, Mama Doris Okello, last night,” ODM stated.

The Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga-led party, in its tributes, prayed for strength, comfort, and peace for the bereaved family.

“We pray to God to guide the family and give them strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time of grief. May the Soul of Mama Doris RIP,” ODM wrote on X.

Preliminary reports revealed that the late Mama Dorcas passed away after a short illness. Kenyans sent condolence messages to Okello.

They eulogised his mother as a matriarch whose life was marked by grace, strength, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones.

“During this period of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with the Okello family and pray that they may find comfort, strength, and peace in the memories they shared and the support of those around them,” Ouma Simiyu wrote.

The news came barely a week after another leader from ODM, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, announced the death of his mother.

According to Senator Onyonka, his mother, Mama Teresia Nyaboke Omoke, passed away while undergoing treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

Onyonka described the late Mama Teresia as a devoted mother who was a pillar of strength to their family. He further described her as a woman of great faith, humility, and wisdom.

CS Mutua Announces Kazi Majuu Recruitment Drive Targeting Over 4,000 Mombasa Residents

The Ministry of Labour has announced an overseas jobs recruitment drive under the Kazi Majuu programme, targeting more than 4,000 residents in Mombasa.

In an update Tuesday, May 5, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said the drive will run for three days from Wednesday, May 6 to Friday, May 8.

The mass recruitment will take place at National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) Mombasa from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

According to the announcement, thousands of vacancies are available across multiple sectors, including healthcare, domestic services, transport, construction, and hospitality, with job placements in countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Bahrain.

In the health and care services category, 200 nursing positions are available free of charge, alongside 100 caregiver roles where fees will vary.

The domestic and support services category offers the largest number of openings, including over 2,300 housemaid positions and 500 housekeeper roles, all of which are free from recruitment or agency fees.

The transport and technical sector also features prominently, with opportunities for motorcycle riders, drivers, electricians, plumbers, steel fixers, and construction helpers.

While some roles, such as motorcycle riders, attract a fee of Ksh15,000, others, including drivers and technical jobs, require payments of up to Ksh160,000, in line with regulated costs.

Meanwhile, the hospitality and service industry offers a smaller number of specialized roles, including positions for waiters, baristas, chefs, juice makers, and security guards, with varying charges depending on the job.

The government emphasized that positions marked as ‘free’ do not attract recruitment or agency fees, while all other charges are regulated and must be paid strictly through official channels.

It also cautioned job seekers against making payments outside the designated process.

Several government agencies, including the National Employment Authority (NEA) and NITA, will be present at the venue to provide guidance and support to applicants throughout the recruitment exercise.

Applicants have been advised to carry their original identification documents, curriculum vitae, and relevant academic and professional certificates.

Authorities further stressed that all applications must be made exclusively through the official recruitment exercise.

KeNHA Reopens Iten-Kabarnet Road After Landslide Disruption Near Kolol

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the reopening of the Iten-Kabarnet Road days after traffic was disrupted by a landslide.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 5, KeNHA confirmed that normal traffic flow has since resumed on the busy road.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists and the public that traffic flow along the Iten – Kabarnet Road near Kolol has been restored,” the statement read.

KeNHA explained that the closure had been caused by adverse weather conditions that have continued to affect several parts of the country.

“This follows earlier disruption caused by a landslide resulting from ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, which had blocked the affected road section,” the statement added.

KeNHA also urged drivers using the route to remain vigilant as conditions continue to stabilise.

“Motorists are advised to continue exercising caution and to strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety as conditions stabilize,” the statement further read.

Tanzanian MP Showers Ruto with Praises, Prays for His Re-election After Parliament Address

Tanzanian Members of Parliament have heaped praise on President William Ruto, following his address to their Parliament on Tuesday, May 5, drumming up support for his re-election in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking on the floor of the Tanzanian parliament, the MPs said Kenyans did not make a mistake in electing Ruto as their president in 2022, and they remain optimistic that Kenyans will elect him again in next year’s elections.

“I am convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Kenyans did not make a mistake in electing Ruto in 2022.. Our borders cannot divide us. Tell Kenyans we take them as our brothers and sisters and we will continue to support you,” stated Ikungi West MP Emmanuel Kingu.

“You have chosen to believe in our President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Who are we not to pray for you so that you can win the next general elections?” he added, in remarks directed at President Ruto.

The MP then read a Bible verse addressed to Ruto, praying for the Head of State ahead of the 2027 polls.

The remarks came after Ruto’s address to the Tanzanian parliament, in which he praised his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu, following her election as president in October 2025.

Ruto was on a two-day state visit in Tanzania from Monday, May 4, to strengthen diplomatic and trade relations between the two countries.

Ruto concluded his tour with a historic address at the Tanzanian Parliament in Dodoma, where he focused on regional cooperation and brotherhood between Kenya and Tanzania, as well as trade and infrastructure development across the region.

Among the issues he addressed on the floor of the house included the planned multi-billion oil refinery expected to be constructed in Tanga.

Tanga MP Kassim Mbaraka welcomed the move, praising Ruto for identifying the region as the appropriate location for the refinery.

“I am from tanga and the region has lagged behind on developments. But today you have said a refinery should be constructed in Tanga. Thank you so much,” he stated.

‘Chapa Mikwaju’ – President Suluhu Urges Ruto to ‘Discipline’ Gen Z Agitating For Good Governance

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu appealed to President William Ruto for collaboration in dealing with Gen Zs, whom she accused of frustrating governments in the East African region.

Speaking on Tuesday, May, President Suluhu told Ruto that they needed to deal with the group firmly and sternly, before they get out of hand.

She argued that the group lacked manners and respect for authority, which was not acceptable.

“Today, I was speaking with the President about how to deal with our children who lack manners. Those who call themselves Gen Zs who pretend that they are one in East Africa and can go and fight for democracy anywhere they please, causing mayhem and disturbing their governments.

“I told Ruto that we have to be firm on this, without looking at who is Kenyan and who is Tanzanian. Wakija kwangu, nachapa mikwaju, wakija kwako, chapa mikwaju ili wakae sawa,” President Suluhu stated.

The Tanzanian Head of State accused Gen Zs of causing mayhem under the pretence of democracy. She told Gen Zs that they should not  African democracy to be the same as that of Western countries.

“The word democracy should not be used to ruin our countries. Democracy has no formula. Democracy in other countries is not the same as here in East Africa; our traditions and beliefs guide ours,” she added.

President Suluhu called out for Kenyans celebrating protests in Tanzania and vice versa.  She explained that the East African nations were intertwined, and what happened in one nation affected the other.

“When bad things happen in Kenya, they also affect us, and we need to work together to tackle them. The same applies to Kenya,” she stated.

Suluhu insisted that the youths in East Africa needed to be respectful and uphold high levels of discipline.

Her sentiments came amid nationwide anti-government protests in Kenya in 2024 and 2025, and protests against the election results in Tanzania.

Human rights activists from Kenya and Uganda were arrested in Tanzania in the wake of the trial of Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu. Tanzanian activists have also been arrested by law enforcement in Kenya.

Over 300 Eviction Notices Issued in Nairobi River Encroachment Crackdown

The Nairobi Rivers Commission has issued more than 300 notices as part of an ongoing cleanup and restoration campaign targeting the Nairobi River.

In an interview on Tuesday, May 5, Commissioner Mumo Musuva said the notices issued cover the Nairobi River and its tributary, Kirichwa Kubwa, with several other sections still under review.

“We have issued so far over 300 notices, and that is only on the Nairobi River and its tributary of Kirichwa Kubwa. We are yet to get through Kirichwa Ndogo, Mathare River, Parklands, and Ngong River sections. Where the courts have guided is that they have said we must follow fair administrative action processes to notify people, engage them through public participation,” he said.

During the same interview, Musuva attributed the flooding in Nairobi to encroachment and land-related violations that have affected river corridors over the years.

“We must keep reminding each other that floods in Nairobi are not a new phenomenon. There is a lot of impunity when it comes to matters of land, and the rivers have suffered a lot because of that. We have mapped the areas, and we are going through a multi-agency team effort to demarcate the riparian zones,” he stated.

Musuva further noted that the enforcement exercise is also facing a significant number of legal challenges, with many affected parties seeking court protection as authorities continue implementing the cleanup.

“We have close to 150 court cases, and everybody is running to court to seek protection even when they know they are wrong. The law is clear, we must follow the process,” he further said.
