China exports surge in first two months of the year despite Trump tariffs

China’s exports surged in the first two months of this year despite trade tensions with the US.

Official figures show exports jumped by more than 20% in January and February, which is almost three times the rate predicted by economists. It puts the country on track to top the record-breaking annual trade surplus it saw in 2025.

The announcement comes as US President Donald Trump is expected to visit China in early April to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The world’s second largest economy is heavily reliant on exports as it faces a number of issues including weak consumer spending, a shrinking population and a property market crisis.

Beijing typically combines January and February trade data to adjust for distortions caused by the Lunar New Year holiday, which falls on different dates each year.

Trade with European countries grew by 27.8%, while exports to Asian countries – a group of South East Asian nations including Thailand, Singapore and Philippines – climbed by nearly 30%.

But China’s exports to America fell more than 10% as Trump imposed tariffs and other measures to address trade imbalances between the two countries.

Last week, China set an annual economic growth target of 4.5%-5%, down from its 5% goal in 2025, which had been met largely due to exports.

Exports have been the key driver of China’s economy, lifting it in spite of poor domestic spending and a property slump.

The meeting between Trump and Xi come as China, like many country’s in Asia, is dealing with the economic impact of the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has disrupted the global energy market.

Police rescue 17 more Ethiopian minors in Ruai human trafficking raid

Police in Ruai, Nairobi, rescued 17 Ethiopian nationals, most of them believed to be minors, during a raid on a residential house in the township.

About 20 others managed to escape the scene during the Sunday raid. This was the second group to be rescued in less than a week from the same area, amid claims that more may still be at large.

Police said they acted on a tip-off from members of the public and raided the house located near New Ruai Family Hospital.

During the operation, officers found 17 Ethiopian nationals with an average age of about 15 years inside the house and rescued them. However, about 20 other occupants managed to escape during the raid.

The rescued minors were escorted to Ruai Police Station as investigations continue. Police are pursuing the suspects who fled the scene as authorities probe a possible human trafficking and smuggling operation.

Last week, police rescued at least 70 foreign nationals during a similar operation targeting suspected human trafficking in Ruai, Nairobi.

The main suspect in the smuggling ring managed to escape, police said. The raid was conducted by detectives from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, acting on a tip-off.

The officers stormed a residential house in the Ruai Block 10 area, where they discovered dozens of foreign nationals locked inside under unclear circumstances.

They were later joined by officers from Ruai Police Station during the operation.

Police said 70 individuals were rescued from the house. Of these, 66 were Ethiopian nationals while four were Eritrean nationals.

One suspect, a Kenyan, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. The rescued individuals were taken into custody pending processing and further investigations.

They are likely to be repatriated to their countries.

Police said they are working to establish the circumstances under which the victims were being held and whether the case is linked to a wider human trafficking network.

The incident comes amid ongoing police operations targeting suspected smuggling networks.

Authorities said many migrants flee problems in their home countries and attempt to travel to South Africa in search of better opportunities.

Police said many of the migrants use the Moyale route as they head to South Africa and the Middle East, often unaware of the dangers ahead.

Tens of migrants are frequently arrested in different parts of the country while waiting to be moved to their next destinations.

Police and immigration officials have decried the increasing number of Ethiopian nationals intercepted in Kenya while in transit.

Officials from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit are conducting joint operations to tackle human smuggling networks. Many of those intercepted enter Kenya in search of jobs or while transiting to other destinations.

At least 14 people killed, 16 injured in crash along Webuye–Kitale road

At least 14 people were killed and 16 others seriously injured following a horrific road accident at Malaha area along the Webuye–Kitale road on Monday night.

According to police, the crash occurred at around 9:45 p.m. on March 9, 2026 and involved motorcycles and a trailer. Most of the victims were pedestrians who had gathered at the scene of the accident.

Preliminary reports indicate that a motorcycle was travelling from Webuye towards Kitale when it collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

Both riders were reportedly not wearing helmets and died on the spot due to the impact.

As members of the public rushed to the scene to assist the victims, tragedy struck again when a Mercedes-Benz trailer, which was travelling from Kitale towards Webuye, lost control and rammed into the crowd.

Police say the trailer ran over several pedestrians at the accident scene, killing 10 people instantly and leaving many others critically injured.

The injured were rushed to Webuye Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Hospital officials later confirmed that four more victims succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment, bringing the total death toll to 14.

Authorities say 16 victims remain admitted at the facility with severe injuries.

Police officers visited and documented the scene, and the bodies of the deceased were moved to the Webuye Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where they are awaiting identification and postmortem examination.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing, police said.

The incident increased to 21, the number of people who were killed in separate accidents in the country on Monday, police said.

The victims included 14 pedestrians, six riders and a passenger.

At least 28 people were left with serious injuries in the accidents, police said.

There is a campaign to address the accident menace in the country. Close to 5,000 people were killed in separate accidents in 2025.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes.

In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting make travel increasingly dangerous.

President Ruto, Oburu to chair joint UDA-ODM PG.

President William Ruto and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga will chair the first United Democratic Alliance (UDA)–Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) joint Parliamentary Group meeting this Tuesday morning.

The two leaders have invited their respective party MPs to the forum, which will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi from 10am.

The joint PG meeting will serve as a follow-up to the inaugural joint session held on August 18, 2025, which was attended by President Ruto and ODM founder, the late Raila Odinga.

The joint PG will, among other things, receive the 10-Point Agenda Report and deliberate on the policy implications of the resolutions contained in the report.

The meeting will also be used to discuss other emerging national matters and parliamentary priorities within the framework of the Broad-Based Government, according to the invitation sent to MPs.

“All Members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are hereby invited to attend the Broad-Based Parliamentary Group Meeting in line with the resolutions from the ODM PG held at Parliament Buildings on 03/03/2026,” an invitation to ODM MPs signed by Leader of Minority Junet Mohamed reads in part.

It adds: “Your attendance and participation will be highly appreciated as we work collectively toward constructive dialogue and effective parliamentary collaboration.”

The PG was originally scheduled to be held before March 7, but plans were shelved following the death of Johanna Ng’eno, MP for Emurua Dikirr.

“The committee has remained diligent to its mandate and deliverables. The status report is ready for submission,” the Agnes Zani-led team said.

The meeting comes at a time when ODM is facing internal turmoil and divisions that have seen Raila Odinga’s party split into two groups pushing for parallel agendas.

Dr. Oburu is leading the Linda Ground faction, which includes other top leaders such as party chairperson Gladys Wanga and two deputy party leaders, Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.

On the other hand, Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and one of the three deputy party leaders, Godfrey Osotsi, are leading the Linda Wananchi faction that is opposed to supporting Ruto’s re-election.

The Sifuna team, which is made up mainly of youthful MPs, has indicated that it will not attend today’s joint PG, which will be used to endorse a planned coalition arrangement between the two parties.

Already, ODM has given a 90-day notice, as required by law, to exit the Azimio La Umoja–One Kenya Coalition and pave the way for its pact with UDA.

Dr. Oburu has told members worried about ODM’s intention to enter negotiations with UDA and other like-minded parties to “hold their horses” and stop making unnecessary pronouncements at social gatherings.

US teacher killed after toilet paper prank goes wrong

A high school teacher in Georgia was accidentally run over and killed outside his home when a toilet paper prank carried out by his students went terribly wrong, officials said.

Jason Hughes, 40, came out of his home to surprise the students who were tossing toilet papers over trees as part of a practical joke.

But Hughes tripped and fell on the ground which was slick from rain, and as the students tried to run away from the scene in two separate cars, he was inadvertently run over by the driver of one of the cars, police said.

The student who was driving the car has been charged with vehicular homicide, but the teacher’s family say they want the charges dropped.

In a statement to the New York Times, Laura Hughes, Jason Hughes’ wife, who is also an instructor at the same high school, said that her husband was beloved by the students.

She said he knew about the prank and “was excited and waiting to catch them in the act”.

The student driver, identified as Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, and two others stopped to try to help Hughes before emergency responders arrived and took him to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

Wallace and the four other 18-year-olds involved were also charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.

Hughes’s wife told the New York Times the family fully supported “getting the charges dropped for all involved”.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” she said. “This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

The BBC has contacted the sheriff’s office for comment.

A Hall County school district spokesperson told local outlet WXIA that Hughes would be remembered as a “passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues”.

Community members have set up a memorial in front of the school where Hughes coached and taught.

Canadian officials rescue 23 people who floated away on ice sheet

BBC -Twenty-three people have been rescued by helicopter crews in Ontario, Canada, after the ice shelf they were standing on broke, sending the group floating into Lake Huron.

Ontario Provincial Police said on social media that the rescue began around noon (16:00 GMT) on Sunday after “winds and current moved the ice shelf away from shore” approximately 2km (1.2 miles).

The rescue involved two helicopters making multiple trips to pluck people off the shelf as it continued to fracture into more pieces in the Owen Sound, about 200km north-west of Toronto.

One member of the group said that he only realised the ice he was fishing on had detached from shore when he noticed that his GPS showed him moving.

Members of the rescued group described harrowing moments, with several of them becoming partially submerged in the cold waters as they sought out the thickest ice on the floe, or sheet.

“I looked at my GPS. We were moving,” fisherman Kevin Fox wrote, identifying himself on Facebook as one of those who were caught up in the incident. “I turned around and saw waves forming behind us.”

He said that he and several others started running towards a route that they hoped still connected to shore.

“We decided to run toward one side of the bay, but when we got there the ice had already separated from shore. We turned and ran the other way, but the ice there was breaking apart too,” he wrote.

Some started phoning their families, said Fox, adding: “It’s something I will never forget – seeing grown men crying while saying goodbye to the people they love.”

Fellow fisherman Alfie How told The Owen Sound Sun Times that they eventually “just sat down as a group and said this could be the end”.

Fox told the paper that the rescue occurred during high wind, and the group was concerned that the helicopters would not be able to fly.

“It was being eroded,” Fox said. “It kept getting smaller, and smaller.”

Police say several members of the group suffered hypothermia, but that everyone was expected to make a full recovery.

“Great teamwork and a quick response by all involved,” police added.

Last month in the US state of Vermont, police rescued a group of ice skaters who had also become trapped on floating ice.

Using kayaks and ferry boats, rescuers brought the group back from the icy Lake Champlain.

Officials warn that ice fishing conditions can change rapidly during the relatively warm daylight hours.

N Korea cancels Pyongyang Marathon for ‘some reasons’

BBC -North Korea has cancelled the Pyongyang marathon for unspecified reasons, a tour agency linked to the event has said.

British-owned Koryo Tours, which describes itself as the official partner of the marathon, said on Monday that it had received notice of the cancellation from North Korea’s athletics association.

A message it attributed to the association said the marathon was being cancelled “due to some reasons”.

The annual event was established in 1981 to celebrate the birth of North Korea’s founding leader Kim Il Sung. The 2026 race was set to take place on 5 April.

The message, purportedly from the North Korea athletics association’s general secretary, thanked “all the Elite Marathoners and Amateur Runners of the world who are interested in Pyongyang International Marathon”.

The message gave no further explanation on what the reasons for the cancellation were.

Koryo Tours said it understood the decision was final and had been taken “at a level above the organisers of the event itself”.

It said it would be seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding the decision.

The tour company added that neither organisers nor event partners were involved in making the decision, and said it recognised “this announcement will be disappointing to many runners who had already registered or were planning to participate”.

Koryo Tours, based in Beijing, China, offers several marathon packages to foreigners, departing from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang.

Packages start from €2,190 ($2,529; £1,894) for 2.5 nights in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, including a marathon place and “highlights” of the capital and tickets were sold out this year, according to the agency’s website.

It said all deposits paid will be returned and runners have the option to retain their deposit for a future event or North Korea tour.

A date for the 2027 marathon has not yet been set.

The event had only returned last year after it was suspended for five consecutive years due to the Covid pandemic.

It is open to both amateur and some professional athletes and offers several race distances – 5km (3.1 miles), 10km (6.2 miles), half marathon (21.1km; 13.1 miles) or full marathon (42.2km; 26.2 miles).

Officers Sensitised on Claims-Reporting Procedures Under the Britam Group Life Assurance Scheme

The ongoing nationwide sensitisation programme on the National Police Service Staff Group Life Insurance Scheme continues to equip officers with essential information to ensure they fully understand how to access the benefits provided under the insurance cover.

Today, the sensitisation programmes were carried out in various areas across the country, including Athi River, Migori, Lamu and Moyale, where officers had the opportunity to engage directly with the National Police Service Human Resource Officers and Britam teams to gain deeper insight into the scheme.

The sessions focused on highlighting the proper procedure for reporting and processing insurance claims. Officers were guided on the importance of promptly reporting incidents that may lead to claims, including injuries, illness, disability, or death covered under the scheme.

Additionally, officers were oriented on the documentation required when lodging claims, the timelines for reporting incidents, and the appropriate service human resource channels through which claims should be submitted for processing.

Moreover, the sensitisation teams emphasised the importance of maintaining accurate personal and service records to facilitate efficient claim processing and minimise delays that may arise due to incomplete documentation.

The National Police Service remains committed to enhancing the welfare of its personnel by ensuring that every officer is adequately informed and empowered to access the protections provided under the National Police Service Staff Group Life Insurance Scheme.

I’ll defend my governor’s seat as I back opposition; Natembeya

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya says he will defend his seat in next year’s general election.

The governor also said he is supporting the opposition to remove the Kenya Kwanza regime from power.

Natembeya says his wish is to complete all projects he has initiated in the region and realise his vision of eliminating poverty and disease, among other challenges affecting residents.

“As we go to elections next year, God willing, I will still work with the people of Trans Nzoia as we also seek to remove the current regime from power and save our country from bad leadership,” Natembeya said.

He spoke at various stops in the county where he has been leading the distribution of maize seedlings to small-scale farmers.

The governor has told off his political rivals who have stepped up campaigns to oust him.

Natembeya termed the rivals’ hirelings sent by their political masters who have no interest in transforming the lives of residents.

The governor said there were three hirelings traversing Trans Nzoia to mislead residents ahead of the next elections so that they end up electing the wrong leaders.

“I do not want to name the three because they do not deserve mileage from being mentioned as those seeking to remove me, “ he said.

“However, I want my people of Trans Nzoia to know that those are hyenas in sheep’s skins. They have been sent by the same masters in Ford Kenya,” Natembeya said.

The county has in the recent past witnessed increased political activities by aspirants seeking to vie for the governor’s seat next year.

Those who have declared interest to face off with Natembeya include Chris Wamalwa, who lost to the governor in the last elections, and former CS for Health Susan Nakhumicha. Also interested is Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau.

They have accused Natembeya of focusing on politics without delivering tangible development since he was elected.
