Stop attacks on the retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Justin Muturi warns

The Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has called for an immediate end to what he describes as sustained and politically motivated attacks on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta by individuals aligned to the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration.

In a statement shared via his social media platforms, Muturi termed the criticism and public remarks directed at the former Head of State as “reckless, unnecessary and unconstitutional,” warning that they undermine democratic norms and the dignity accorded to retired leaders.

“The sustained and increasingly hostile attacks directed at Rtd President Uhuru Kenyatta by leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration must come to an immediate end,” Muturi said, adding that such conduct represents “a direct affront to constitutional democracy.”

He argued that the attacks form part of a broader political strategy aimed at silencing the former President while deflecting attention from current governance challenges.

“They are a calculated attempt to curtail his political rights, which are guaranteed to every Kenyan,” Muturi stated.

The former National Assembly Speaker also criticised what he described as attempts to redefine the role of retired leaders, noting that in many democracies, former heads of state remain active in public and political life.

“Kenya does not exist in isolation; democratic norms across the world allow retired leaders to continue contributing to national and global discourse,” he said.

Muturi further escalated his remarks by directly linking the attacks to President William Ruto, alleging they are being orchestrated from the highest levels of government.

“We know that you, Mr President William Ruto, are behind the continued deployment of your proxies to attack and vilify H.E Uhuru Kenyatta,” he said, calling on the Head of State to rein in those responsible.

He emphasised that the current administration should not attribute its challenges to the former President, urging leaders to embrace accountability.

“Leadership demands responsibility, not scapegoating,” Muturi said.

The Democratic Party leader also referenced constitutional protections for retired presidents, arguing that any attempt to undermine their rights and privileges would be unlawful and unacceptable.

He warned against what he termed as rising political intolerance, accusing Kenya Kwanza of fostering hostility toward dissenting voices and former state officials.

“No political formation has the right to dictate the leadership, alliances or internal affairs of another,” he said.

Muturi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to constitutionalism and democratic freedoms, calling for a shift toward issue-based politics.

“Kenya deserves mature, issue-driven leadership—not intimidation, propaganda or political vendettas,” he said.

Nandi county rewards marathon star Sebastian Sawe with Sh4.8M house after historic win

By Bonface Mulyungi

Marathon sensation Sabastian Sawe has been handed a major reward back home after his record-breaking feat in London, with Nandi Governor Stephen Sang awarding him a modern three-bedroom house.Sawe stunned the world with a historic run, clocking 1:59:30 in London in what is being described as a breakthrough moment in marathon history.

He crossed the finish line more than a minute faster than the late Kelvin Kiptum’s previous mark of 2:00:35 set in 2023.

The County Government of Nandi said the house is part of the Chesumei Affordable Housing project under the Boma Yangu programme.

It is located in Kapsabet, opposite the county headquarters and near Kapsabet Boys High School.Valued at about Sh4.8 million, the unit features a modern design with high-quality finishes and sits in what the county described as a secure and well-serviced residential area.

“This award is made in recognition of Sebastian Kimaru Sawe’s outstanding achievement and serves as a symbol of our continued commitment to promoting excellence while expanding access to quality housing and fostering inclusive and thriving communities,” the statement read.Sawe’s triumph has also attracted national recognition. President William Ruto awarded him Sh8 million, including Sh5 million for breaking the world record and Sh3 million for his victory under the revised athlete reward structure.

Ruto also presented customised number plates bearing Sawe’s winning time, 1 59 30, and pledged to buy him a new car after the athlete noted he already had one.“You will choose a car of your choice, and I will buy it for you,” the President said.

The marathon star is set for a massive payday following his London victory, with earnings expected to exceed $1 million (Sh129.2 million).

This includes $355,000 (Sh45.9 million) from prize money and bonuses, alongside additional earnings from his Adidas contract. His rewards include $55,000 (Sh7.1 million) for winning, $150,000 (Sh19.4 million) for running under 2:02:00, $125,000 (Sh16.1 million) for the world record and $25,000 (Sh3.2 million) for a course record. The recognition mirrors similar honours awarded to other top athletes, including Faith Kipyegon, who received Sh5 million and a Sh6 million house last year after breaking the 1,500m record.Ruto hailed Sawe’s achievement as a defining moment for the country.

“What Sebastian has achieved, running a marathon under two hours, confirms Kenya’s place as the origin of wonder,” he said.“If there was any doubt in anybody’s mind about magical Kenya and about the origin of wonder, Sebastian has put it with clarity.”

Winner of blockbuster PSG-Bayern sequel to face Arsenal or Atletico in Champions League final

Now for the encore Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Two teams which produced a 5-4 instant classic last week will take center stage on Wednesday for the second act of their Champions League semifinal.

The return game in Munich surely cannot reach the same height of drama as the waves of finessed attacks — and overwhelmed defenses — reached in Paris.

Still, coaches Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany will aim for the stars.

“More, even more,” Kompany said in Paris when asked about his main message to Bayern’s players for the decisive second leg.

Arsenal hosts Atletico Madrid on Tuesday with the score 1-1.

The rewards for a semifinal victory are a place in the final on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Stellar semifinals

Champions League semifinals are often more memorable than the title matches.

One year ago, an exciting Inter Milan-Barcelona contest was widely praised like the PSG-Bayern opener has been. A 3-3 first leg in Barcelona was just an appetizer for Inter’s roller coaster 4-3 win in extra time at San Siro.

In 2022, Real Madrid somehow rallied in stoppage time of the second leg to deny Manchester City victory. Madrid won 3-1 in extra time. The wild first leg went 4-3 to City in Manchester.

A vintage knockout phase in 2019 was capped by astonishing comebacks on back-to-back nights in the semifinal second legs by Liverpool against Barcelona and Tottenham at Ajax.

It is perhaps eight years since a truly compelling back-and-forth final, when substitute Gareth Bale’s goals — the first an iconic bicycle kick — lifted Madrid over Liverpool 3-1 in Kyiv.

While PSG excelled in the final last year, the 5-0 rout of Inter was never competitive.

Arena of entertainers

Munich was the scene of PSG’s finest game last season against Inter and fulfilled its Qatari owners’ quest to become European champion for the first time.

The Allianz Arena is also where six-time champion Bayern won all six home games in the Champions League this season, scoring 20 goals including four past Real Madrid in a quarterfinals second-leg thriller three weeks ago.

Munich is the only candidate to host the Champions League final again in 2028. UEFA should confirm that decision in September.

Atletico in England

Coach Diego Simeone takes his Atletico team to north London for a third game this season. Third time lucky?

Atletico lost at Arsenal 4-0 in a league-phase game in October and survived a 3-2 loss at Tottenham in the second leg of the round of 16 that easily could have been a bigger margin. Atletico also started this Champions League campaign in England in September — and lost at Liverpool 3-2.

It all adds up to five games lost by Atletico in its 15-game Champions League campaign so far, while Arsenal has the last remaining unbeaten record.

Neither team has been European champion. It’s 10 years since Atletico played in the last of its three finals, losing to Real Madrid, and 20 years since Arsenal lost its only final, against Barcelona.

Penalty debates

All four semifinalists were awarded, and scored, a penalty kick last week. A fifth was awarded to Arsenal but then overturned after the referee was sent to his pitchside monitor to review replays.

Since the Video Assistant Referee system made its World Cup debut in 2018 the trend in top-tier games has been to award ever more spot kicks.

None of the five decisions last week was universally praised, and the two handball incidents showed how UEFA’s view differs to many coaches, players and fans.

UEFA director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti has previously said “we don’t like soft penalties” and cautioned against “microscopic VAR interventions” — which seemed to be happening last week.

For each handball, the ball first deflected from the body of, respectively, Bayern’s Alphonso Davies and Arsenal’s Ben White before contacting an arm which was not held tight to the side of their bodies. That is typically not a penalty in the English Premier League but almost certainly is in UEFA competitions.

Rosetti plans to meet soon with refereeing officials from Europe’s main leagues to seek more clarity and consistency next season.

Chelsea teen Jesse Derry ‘conscious, talking’ after clash of heads

(AP) — Chelsea winger Jesse Derry was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after being carried off the field following a clash of heads against Nottingham Forest in his first Premier League start on Monday.

The 18-year-old Derry fell to the ground without using his arms to cushion his fall after the aerial clash with Forest’s Zach Abbott.

The incident required more than eight minutes of treatment.

Derry was taken off on a stretcher as Stamford Bridge fell quiet and his Chelsea teammates looked concerned.

“Jesse is conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and thank the medical staff for their swift response.”

Chelsea lost 3-1 for a sixth straight defeat in the league.

Chelsea loses sixth straight Premier League game as Forest moves close to safety

(AP) — Chelsea slumped to a sixth straight Premier League defeat and saw its Champions League qualification hopes virtually disappear after losing to Nottingham Forest 3-1 on Monday.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored two either side of earning a penalty converted by fellow striker Igor Jesus, inspiring a heavily rotated Forest to the brink of safety. Forest was six points above the relegation zone with three rounds left.

Joao Pedro’s overhead kick in second-half stoppage time ended Chelsea’s scoreless run in the league stretching back almost two months but proved to be only a consolation.

On a humiliating day for the London club and interim coach Calum McFarlane, Cole Palmer had a penalty saved in a 14-minute period of first-half stoppage time — required after 18-year-old Chelsea winger Jesse Derry, making his first Premier League start, needed lengthy treatment following a clash of heads with Forest’s Zach Abbott at a corner.

Both had to leave the field, Derry on a stretcher as Stamford Bridge fell quiet and his teammates looked concerned.

Reaching the FA Cup final last week has failed to rouse Chelsea’s players, who were booed by their own fans at halftime and fulltime, amid their dreadful run of form in the league that has plunged the team to ninth place and out of contention for a top-five finish.

Sixth place could yet earn qualification for the Champions League, but only in the specific scenario of Aston Villa — currently in fifth place — finishing in that position and also winning the Europa League. Chelsea is four points behind sixth-placed Bournemouth.

Villa is 1-0 down to Forest after the first leg of Europa League semifinals. The second leg is at Villa Park on Thursday, prompting Forest manager Vitor Pereira to field virtually a second-choice lineup that still had too much for Chelsea.

In-form playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White was one of Forest’s top players starting on the bench. He came on, set up Awoniyi for the third goal in the 52nd minute, and then was forced off with a bandage around his head after a clash of heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who also had to be substituted.

Later Monday, second-placed Manchester City visited Everton needing a win to restore its three-point deficit to Arsenal in the title race.

How De Zerbi brought life to sinking Spurs

Roberto de Zerbi’s Spurs look like a revived outfit after claiming their second straight win – a 2-1 victory at Champions League-chasing Aston Villa.

Having been coached by three managers – Thomas Frank, Igor Tudor and now De Zerbi – with strongly opposing styles this season, Spurs seem to be coming together despite the short time their new boss has had with them.

With renewed confidence paired with tactical principles that have simplified his players’ decision-making process, Spurs’ squad and fans will be quietly optimistic things have changed for the better and they can avoid the drop.

And De Zerbi deserves much of the credit given the way he has set up his team.

Aggressive pressing nullifies Villa’s build-up

De Zerbi is usually praised for how his sides build from the back, but Spurs’ defensive work stood out most against Villa on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s team have opted to build short and centrally before speeding up play when space opens higher up the pitch this season – not too dissimilar from the principles De Zerbi tends to opt for in possession.

To counter this, De Zerbi asked Spurs to press aggressively while blocking the middle of the pitch.

Richarlison was key to the plan, positioning himself partly to block the pass into Villa’s right centre midfielder Lamare Bogarde, while angling his body to discourage Emiliano Martinez from playing down Villa’s right.

Next to him, De Zerbi opted for Conor Gallagher who marked Youri Tielemans.

Spurs' narrow front four blocks the centre of the pitch while also preventing Villa from finding their wide players easily

At times, Richarlison pressed Martinez with Rodrigo Bentancur then stepping up from midfield to take responsibility for Bogarde.

The Spurs trio in this way ensured Villa’s central midfielders were unable to receive the ball unmarked.

Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel also had important roles. Kolo Muani often positioned himself between Tyrone Mings and Ian Maatsen.

If Martinez played to left centre-back Mings, Kolo Muani pressed intensely while angling his run to block the pass into Maatsen.

But if Maatsen looked likely to receive freely, Pedro Porro stepped up from right-back.

Spurs reacted to these pressing triggers with an impressive level of coordination.

Image caption,Spurs looked to cut off the right side of the pitch with their press while also man marking Villa’s central midfielders – giving them few options to play out from the back

Villa’s centre-backs and full-backs were marked which meant Martinez and Mings were limited to looking for their attackers who dropped deep centrally.

Spurs ultimately funnelled Villa’s play down the middle while also setting up to have numerous players in that area of the pitch.

Tottenham were also ready to follow Villa’s dropping forwards when this happened, with Kevin Danso particularly aggressive in stepping out to Ross Barkley, winning the ball and starting attacks.

When Villa played those riskier passes, Spurs’ attackers immediately turned and pressed backwards, converging around the player in possession and increasing the chances of a turnover.

Villa struggled to progress the ball and Spurs in turn converted the opposition’s possession into chances of their own.

It is a small sample size, but De Zerbi’s Spurs have won possession in the final third 5.3 times per game on average – the highest average for any team under a manager this season, and a clear sign of intent.

Spurs' central pressing trap forces Villa to play dangerous passes to their attackers who appeared free. In this instance Danso anticipates the pass and wins the ball back - starting a Tottenham attack

Dazzling rotations pull apart Villa’s defensive shape

In possession, Emery’s 4-4-2 was pulled apart by some of the impressive rotations De Zerbi has become known for.

Danso, Antonin Kinsky and Micky van de Ven formed a wide three around Villa’s front two which gave them an overload and helped them play out.

The Czech goalkeeper’s ability with both feet also opened up a number of angles to help Spurs progress the ball.

Tottenham‘s two full-backs and two central midfielders were key to pulling Villa’s shape apart.

One of the midfield two often moved wide either to drag one of Villa’s midfielders with them – or to receive the ball unmarked themselves.

Joao Palhinha or Bentancur were seen dropping in to form a back three alongside the two centre-backs. This gave Spurs an overload against Villa’s front two again, this time higher up the pitch.

Palhinha moves into a right-back position and Kinsky’s ability to use his left foot to find him helps Spurs progress the ball from this situation

De Zerbi also gave left-back Destiny Udogie licence to push up the pitch – and he was often allowed to do so by Villa’s right-sided attacker Jadon Sancho.

When Udogie did make darting central runs, a Tottenham midfielder would drop into the space he had vacated – filling in at full-back.

After enticing Villa to step up following a series of short passes, Kinksy tended to look long for Udogie’s run.

Richarlison, Tel, Kolo Muani, and Gallagher would be close by, arriving to pick up any knockdowns – and Spurs, with territory and space high up the pitch, created numerous dangerous chances.

Image caption,Udogie runs from full-back unmarked as Kinsky plays a long ball over the top. Bentancur drops to fill in at left-back with Sancho remaining at right midfield

On the other flank, right-back Porro’s movement infield dragged Morgan Rogers – nominally Villa’s left-sided midfielder – with him.

In possession, Gallagher as Spurs’ number 10 tended to move to whichever side the ball was on.

Tielemans would often follow him wide and Bentancur, recognising this, shuttled across to help Spurs create four v three situations on the flank: Bentancur, Gallagher, their winger and full-back against Villa’s full-back, central midfielder and winger.

These numerical advantages helped Spurs establish strong attacking possession in the final third, spending less time defending in their own half.

Belief and tactics work hand in hand

De Zerbi took over a Tottenham side struggling for form, confidence and with a series of key players out injured.

But he has already drilled into his side a set of principles that echo what he has done at previous jobs – albeit adapting them to the quality of his players.

Spurs play short from their keeper but are more willing to go long to a target man in Richarlison than De Zerbi’s Brighton were.

Given the impressive physicality of the Spurs squad, utilising a high press as a method of chance creation has been smart too.

Tudor looked to take a similar albeit less coordinated approach out of possession, but De Zerbi has built on that – not defending man-to-man across the pitch but instead asking his side to pick moments in which to win the ball back.

None of these tactics however are possible without a squad that believes in the message the coach is relaying.

In his news conferences so far, De Zerbi has been focused on one idea – that Spurs must believe in themselves, and shake off any negativity, if they are to be a Premier League side next season.

Their performance against Villa will have certainly helped.

Mourinho’s Benfica still unbeaten – but miss out on title

With two games left in Portugal’s top flight, Jose Mourinho’s Benfica could join the list of ‘invincibles’ to have gone an entire season without losing.

Remarkably, however, that achievement will not be enough to deliver the club’s 39th league title.

Porto have already been crowned champions after moving nine points clear of second-placed Benfica at the weekend.

Under the presidency of former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas, Porto have lost just one of their 32 games this term.

While Benfica have not lost any, they have had 10 draws – six more than the champions.

Primeira Liga - top four
Image caption,Primeira Liga table

Benfica will complete an invincible season if they avoid defeat against Braga on Sunday and Estoril Praia on the Primeira Liga’s final day.

And this would even not be the first time they have gone a league season unbeaten and ended up trophyless.

In 1977-78, Porto drew two games fewer and pipped them to the league title on goal difference.

Mourinho’s Benfica could join FC Sheriff in Moldova (2024-25) and Serbian side Red Star Belgrade (2007-08) as the only European sides this century to miss out on a league title despite going an entire season without losing.

Have Benfica ‘gifted’ Porto the title?

Mourinho and Benfica will surely view this season as a missed opportunity – although an invincible campaign would be some solace.

They could even finish third given they are only three points ahead of Sporting, who have a game in hand and a superior goal difference.

Portuguese sports publication A Bola, external said Benfica had “gifted” rivals Porto 12 points, after letting a lead slip in six of their 10 draws.

However, after seeing their title hopes disappear following a 2-2 draw at Famalicao on Saturday, Benfica president Rui Costa instead took aim at the officials.

“No-one has the right to decide who wins championships or who goes to the Champions League other than the players and coaches on the field, and what happened here today was not that,” Costa said.

Costa complained that Famalicao were unfairly awarded a penalty, while their second goal “came from a corner which wasn’t a corner”.

“It unequivocally explains what this referee came here to do today. Trying to make sure Benfica got beaten here.”

Portuguese sports newspaper Record, external has reported that the Portuguese Association of Football Referees will file a complaint against Costa after his comments.

Mourinho, who was also unhappy with the officiating in Saturday’s match, said: “This game is a good reflection of what has happened in this championship.”

The Portuguese manager has been one of the names linked to the Real Madrid job in the summer if the Spanish club decide to part ways with Alvaro Arbeloa.

However, O Jogo report, external that Benfica are set to offer Mourinho a new contract this week.

US denies Iranian report warship was struck by missiles

The US has denied an Iranian media report that one of its warships was struck by Iranian missiles as it tried to enter the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement that “no US Navy ships have been struck” and forces are “enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports”.

It came after Fars, the semi-official Iranian news agency, said two missiles hit a US Navy boat sailing through the strait after ignoring a warning from Iran’s Navy.

Centcom later said two US-flagged merchant vessels had “successfully transited” through the strait.
Earlier, Iran’s military warned that it would attack any foreign forces if they entered the strait, “especially, the aggressive US army”.

Speaking to Reuters, a senior Iranian official said Iran had fired a warning shot against the US warship to prevent its entry to the strait, adding that it is unclear if there was damage.

Iranian media also reported that it had prevented American and Israeli “enemy destroyers” from entering the strait on Monday.

US President Donald Trump had earlier announced that the US on Monday would begin trying to free merchant ships stranded by Iran’s closure of the key shipping channel since the start of the war.

Trump said “Project Freedom” was a “humanitarian gesture” and that any interference would “be dealt with forcefully”.

Some 15,000 US service personnel, guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft would be involved, Centcom said, adding that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue.

Centcom later said two US-flagged merchant vessels had “successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz”, but did not provide the names of the vessels..

“American forces are actively assisting efforts to restore transit for commercial shipping,” it said.
The move comes as the two countries observe a temporary ceasefire, which began on 8 April, and as they work on agreeing on a permanent peace plan.

However a senior Iranian official warned that any US attempt to interfere in the strait would be considered a violation of the ceasefire.

Iran’s closure of the channel – which is crucial to oil exports from the Gulf – has seen fuel prices rise globally and also left thousands of sailors stranded on some 2,000 ships trapped by the blockade.
About 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas usually passes through the strait.

In Trump’s post on social media, he said “countries from all over the world” had asked the US if they could help free up the ships, describing them as “merely neutral and innocent bystanders”.

Trump added the operation will be made on behalf of the US, Iran and other Middle Eastern nations, without listing which countries. He did not provide further details on how the operation would be managed.

He also said that US representatives were having “very positive” discussions with Iran, and that those talks “could lead to something very positive for all”.

An estimated 20,000 sailors have been trapped in the Gulf since the start of the war with Iran. There has been growing concern over dwindling supplies and the effects on sailors’ physical and mental health.

The United Kingdom Maritime Transportation Operation (UKMTO) on Sunday reported that a tanker had been hit by an “unknown projectile” in the strait, adding that the crew were safe.

On Monday, the United Arab Emirates said a tanker affiliated with Adnoc, its state-owned oil company, was hit in the strait, adding that no-one was injured.

Also on Monday, the Pakistani government said 22 crew members from Iranian container ship Touska – seized by the US last month – will be “handed over to the Iranian authorities”.

The BBC was told by a senior official that 15 of them were handed to Iranian officials at the Gabd–Rimdan border crossing in Balochistan.

The official did now clarify why the remaining seven crew were not handed over.

The Touska was intercepted on its way to an Iranian port as part of the US’s blockade, with the crew evacuated to Pakistan.

Pakistan said the repatriation of the crew is “a confidence-building measure by the United States of America”.

Trump’s announcement came after Iranian state-linked media said Tehran had received a US response to its latest peace proposal.

Iran said the response, delivered via Pakistan, was being reviewed, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The US is yet to formally confirm it has replied to Iran. However, Trump reportedly told Israel’s Kan News on Sunday that the proposal was unacceptable to him.

Iranian state media said Tehran’s 14-point peace plan asked for Washington to withdraw its forces from near Iran’s borders and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports, and for all hostilities to cease – including Israel’s offensive in Lebanon.

It also called for an agreement between the two countries to be reached within 30 days.

Iranian state media added that the proposal urged the two warring sides to focus on “ending the war” rather than extending a current ceasefire.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei was quoted by state media as saying that “at this stage, we do not have nuclear negotiations” – a key demand by Washington.

Iran has repeatedly denied it is seeking a nuclear bomb and says its programme is only for peaceful purposes, though the country is the only non-nuclear-armed state to have enriched uranium at near weapons-grade level.

On Saturday, Trump confirmed that Washington had received the latest Iranian peace proposal.

In a post on Truth Social, he wrote that he would review the plan, but that he “can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years”.

Speaking to reporters later on Saturday, he said he had been told “about the concept of the deal”, adding: “They’re going to give me the exact wording now.”

Asked by the BBC about whether military strikes against targets inside Iran could be renewed, Trump said it was “a possibility”.

“If they misbehave. If they do something bad,” he said. “But right now we’ll see.”

The US president appeared disinclined to withdraw from the conflict entirely, saying “we’re not leaving” and “we’re going to do it, so nobody has to go back in two years or five years”.

The Iranian state-linked agencies said Tehran’s latest proposal was in response to a nine-point US plan, which envisaged a two-month ceasefire.

Kenya Issues Advisory to Nationals in South Africa Amid Security Concerns

The Kenyan government has urged its citizens living in the Republic of South Africa to remain vigilant following reports of demonstrations and isolated incidents affecting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

In a statement released by the Kenya High Commission in Pretoria, Kenyans were advised to exercise caution, particularly by avoiding areas where protests are taking place. The mission noted that while the situation is not widespread, recent developments have raised safety concerns for foreign residents.

Kenyans were further encouraged to comply with directives issued by local authorities and to carry valid identification documents at all times to avoid potential complications during security checks.

The High Commission also called on Kenyan nationals to promptly report any incidents or emergencies to the South African Police Service and to keep the mission informed to enable timely assistance.

The advisory comes amid periodic unrest in parts of South Africa that has, in the past, occasionally targeted foreign nationals, prompting diplomatic missions to issue precautionary guidance to their citizens.

The Kenya High Commission in Pretoria reaffirmed its readiness to support affected nationals and urged the Kenyan community to stay informed and prioritize their safety.

Nigeria’s government has summoned South Africa’s top diplomat in Abuja over attacks on foreigners in the country, the foreign ministry said Saturday.

South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised economy, has long been a destination for both legal and undocumented African workers.

But saddled with an unemployment rate of over 30 percent, it has seen repeated spurts of xenophobic and anti-migrant protests — including renewed violence in recent weeks.

South Africa’s acting high commissioner in Abuja is set to meet with Nigerian officials Monday for discussions on “documented instances of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses”, foreign ministry spokesman Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said.

The summons comes a week after Ghana’s foreign ministry called in South Africa’s acting high commissioner in Accra over several “xenophobic incidents” against Ghanaians.

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spoke of an incident in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province in which a Ghanaian, “a legal resident, was confronted… (and) instructed to leave South Africa and ‘fix his country’”.

The statement also warned of “escalating tensions, with foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, being advised to remain indoors for their safety”.

There are more than three million foreigners living in South Africa, or 5.1 percent of the population, according to the statistics agency.

More than 63 percent come from countries in the 16-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc.

South Africa’s acting police minister last week condemned anti-immigrant violence, saying attacks on foreign nationals were “unlawful” and violated the country’s constitutional values of dignity and equality.

“Acts of xenophobia, violence, looting, or intimidation will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Firoz Cachalia said in a statement.

Police have “been instructed to act decisively and without hesitation in addressing these incidents”, he added.

‘Save Us The Drama’ – CS Alice Wahome Blasts Kang’ata for Ditching UDA

Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, on Monday, May 4, hit out at Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata following his announcement to leave the UDA party.

CS Wahome claimed that Kang’ata did not just leave the party but had been absent for a while and that his exit was inevitable.

She further questioned why the Governor had resorted to dramatising his exit by calling for a press conference.

“In less than 24 hours, you have made three media appearances, maybe more. You have not left. You have been absent. So save us the drama and see you ahead,” Wahome stated.

The Lands Boss argued that Kang’ata only announced his divorce from the ruling party after he was left exposed.

A file photo of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata

“You have panicked because you have been exposed. Someone called it hypocrisy catching up with you,” she reiterated.

Earlier, former Caninet Secretary Moses Kuria called out Kang’ata for being fifty-fifty about his true political stand. He accused the Murang’a governor of lying to Kenyans about his next political venture.

Kuria claimed that the County Chief would eventually join the DCP party led by former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.

“He has been threatened, and he has succumbed. Gachagua has gone on record saying that if Kang’ata does not move to DCP, then the former Water PS would be given the ticket,” Kuria stated.

The ex-Presidential advisor wondered how  Kang’ata easily folded to the threat, yet he had a reputable development record, which would guarantee him re-election regardless of the party he vied in.

Kang’ata explained that his departure from UDA did not mean that he had bad blood with President William Ruto, whom he termed a personal friend.

He explained that he merely differed from him politically, specifically, how the UDA Party Leader handled the politics of the Mount Kenya region.
