New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern To Step Down

Jacinda Ardern delivers a briefing on Covid-19 on Sunday afternoon.

Jacinda Ardern has announced she will quit as New Zealand prime minister next month, saying she no longer has “enough in the tank” to lead.

Ms Ardern choked up as she detailed how six “challenging” years in the job had taken a toll.

She will step down as Labour Party leader no later than 7 February. There will be a vote in the coming days to determine her replacement.

New Zealand will hold a general election on 14 October.

Ms Ardern, 42, said she had taken time to consider her future over the summer break.

“I had hoped that I would find what I needed to carry on over that period but, unfortunately, I haven’t, and I would be doing a disservice to New Zealand to continue,” she told reporters.

Ms Ardern became the youngest female head of government in the world when she was elected prime minister in 2017, aged 37.

And a year later she became the second elected world leader to ever give birth while in office.

She steered New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing recession, the Christchurch mosque shootings, and the White Island volcanic eruption.

“It’s one thing to lead your country through peace time, it’s another to lead them through crisis,” she said.

“These events… have been taxing because of the weight, the sheer weight and continual nature of them. There’s never really been a moment where it’s ever felt like we were just governing.”

Ms Ardern led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory in 2020, but her domestic popularity has declined to new lows in recent months, according to opinion polls.

Statue Of Twitter’s Logo Auctioned For Ksh. 12 Million

An auction for hundreds of items at Twitter’s San Francisco HQ has just ended.

A statue of the platform’s famous bird logo has claimed the most expensive item sold, coming in at $100,000 (£81,000).

Viewers online noted that some of the used items were no bargain, as they were selling for more than retail.

The sale comes as owner Elon Musk cuts costs at Twitter following his $44bn purchase of the company last year.

Since taking over in late October, Mr Musk has laid off around half of the company’s 7,500 staff.

He has also ended many of Twitter’s perks, such as free meals.

Heritage Global Partners, the auction’s administrator, did not publish the auction’s final results, but the BBC has collected several prices just before closing.

A 190cm (6ft) planter in the shape of an @ symbol finished near $15,000 (£12,160).

Mr Musk tweeted in November that the company had seen a “massive drop in revenue” following the departure of several advertisers.

He also warned the firm could go bankrupt.

Twitter has allegedly failed to pay rent at offices around the globe, including their San Francisco HQ, where their landlord is suing for non-payment.

Nick Dove, a representative of Heritage Global Partners, the company administering the auction, told Fortune magazine the sale had nothing to do with recouping costs for the $44bn purchase, however.

“If anyone genuinely thinks that the revenue from selling a couple computers and chairs will pay for the mountain there, then they’re a moron,” he said.

Senegal’s Opposition Leader, To Stand Trial For Rape

A Senegalese judge has ordered Ousmane Sonko, a renowned opposition leader, to stand trial for alleged rape.

Sonko’s lawyers confirmed this on Wednesday.

Sonko came third in Senegal’s presidential election in 2019 and has proclaimed himself a candidate for the 2024 elections, he enjoys popularity among young people.

However, he has also had legal issues. Most notably, he has been accused of rape by a beauty salon employee where he went for a massage.

Sonko, a 48-year-old former tax inspector, has disputed the charge and claims he is the victim of President Macky Sall’s conspiracy to end his political career.

On Tuesday, the judge signed an order referring Sonko’s case to a criminal court for alleged crimes such as rape and death threats, which he was charged with in 2021.

Sonko has claimed that the rape allegations are part of a plot to derail his 2024 presidential ambition.

His detractors regard the controversial politician as a populist firebrand.

Sonko’s followers applaud his attempts to speak out against corruption and social snobbery, as well as his criticism of international corporations and Senegal’s former colonial power, France.

Man United Run Punctured By Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise scored a stunning last-minute free-kick to deny Manchester United a victory that would have taken them second in the Premier League.

United were on course for their 10th successive win after Bruno Fernandes scored just before half-time when he finished well following Christian Eriksen’s pull-back.

But Olise struck in dramatic style with a brilliant curling free-kick to ensure a point apiece.

The draw does take United above Newcastle into third but keeps them behind rivals Manchester City, who play at home to Tottenham on Thursday.

Referees To Explain VAR Decisions To Fans

Decisions made by the Video Assistant Referee are set to be explained to television viewers and those in the stadium at next month’s Club World Cup.

International Football Association Board (Ifab) says if the trial in Morocco is a success then it could be rolled out at other Fifa competitions.

That could include this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, a temporary concussion substitute trial in the Premier League next season has been ruled out.

It was discussed when Ifab met at Wembley on Wednesday following a request from world players’ union Fifpro and the World Leagues Forum to test the protocol in the English top flight, Ligue 1 in France and Major League Soccer in the United States.

The current concussion protocols, which allow an additional permanent substitution to be made, have come in for criticism since they were approved in 2020, with campaigners highlighting instances where a player has been allowed to stay on the pitch before later being substituted.

Elon Musk, Tesla Face Trial Over 2018 Tweet

On Tuesday, jury selection began in a California courtroom over whether Elon Musk committed fraud by tweeting in 2018 that he was about to take Tesla private.

The tweets drove Tesla’s stock price soaring, and Musk is being sued by shareholders who claim the billionaire acted recklessly, costing them billions of dollars.

The trial is scheduled to last three weeks and comes at a critical time for Musk, who will most certainly be called to testify.

Tesla’s stock price has dropped in the last year, owing to investor dissatisfaction with Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the social media network to which the billionaire appears to be devoting much of his time.

Shareholders sued Musk in 2018 for allegedly costing them billions of dollars by tweeting “financing secured” for a scheme to buy out the publicly traded electric automaker.

Musk claimed in a second tweet that “investor support is confirmed,” and that the purchase was only pending a shareholder vote.

“The plaintiff argues that these tweets were materially misleading and artificially influenced the price of Tesla shares and other securities after they were made,” US District Court Judge Edward Chen summarized the case for possible jurors.

US officials have already investigated Musk’s brief tweets in 2018.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States ordered Musk to resign as chairman of Tesla’s board of directors and fined the company and Musk each $20 million.

OMARI: Ruto ‘Misled’ On Chebukati Murder Plot Bombshell

President William Ruto’s statements about the suspected plan to kill outgoing IEBC head Wafula Chebukati are political.

City lawyer Danstan Omari said the comment should have been made at a political gathering.

“The President got it right, but the message was not to be done the way he did it. It could have been done at a political rally in Kamukunji or elsewhere,” he said on National Television.

Omari said Kenyan politicians should focus on cutting the cost of living.

On Tuesday, Ruto said that there was a plot to kidnap, torture, and kill Chebukati at the Bomas of Kenya.

Ruto claimed the conspiracy was hatched by a political syndicate in charge of the presidential succession as the ultimate move to impose their favored candidate on Kenyans.

Ruto stated that Chebukati’s assassination would open the way for the people’s will to be overturned.
