Reshuffled flights and players stuck – how sport is navigating Middle East crisis

Sport stars are among those grounded in Gulf countries as the crisis in the Middle East widens.

Iran responded to an attack by the US and Israel on Saturday by firing at US assets and allies across the region, targeting Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Thousands of flights have been cancelled to and from the region in one of the most serious disruptions to global travel since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UK Foreign Office has urged British nationals – so far more than 100,000 Britons have registered their presence in the Middle East – to follow local advice, which in most countries was to shelter in place.

The crisis has also raised questions about upcoming sporting events including this summer’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US.

Here is what we know so far.

‘Everyone will be ready’ for F1 curtain-raiser

Australian Grand Prix organisers say they are “really confident” this weekend’s opening race of the Formula 1 season will not be affected.

Close to 1,000 members of F1 staff have been forced to rearrange travel plans to Melbourne, with an estimated 500 of them reportedly set to be flown from Europe on charter planes.

Australian F1 chief Travis Auld said on Monday that “everyone will be here ready for the race”, despite the “reshuffling of flights” required to ensure the transportation of key personnel – including drivers.

F1 also said it is “closely monitoring” the situation, with upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia scheduled on 12 and 19 April respectively.

Lions and Bairstow await updates

In cricket, the England Lions squad are following official advice from security experts and the government while they remain unable to leave the UAE.

The Lions – England’s development team led by coach Andrew Flintoff and Test captain Ben Stokes and consisting of around 30 players and staff – travelled to the UAE for matches against Pakistan Shaheens.

The second of those matches, due to take place in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, was cancelled. While no official notice has been given, it is expected the remaining matches will be called off.

England star Jonny Bairstow, who is in Abu Dhabi but not with the Lions, replied to UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s statement on Iran on X: “Can you get us home?”

At the T20 World Cup, West Indies are unable to return home from India after their exit on Sunday and remain in Kolkata, with Zimbabwe reportedly in a similar situation.

England women were due to leave for a one-month training camp in Abu Dhabi this week, but that has been delayed.

Will Iran compete at US-hosted World Cup?

Iran have qualified for this summer’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, but doubt has been cast on the nation’s participation.

The head of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, told Iranian television that it is “far from our expectations that we can look at the World Cup with hope” – but added the country’s sports officials would decide if any action was necessary.

Fifa’s general secretary Mattias Grafstrom said on Saturday: “Our focus is to have a safe World Cup with everybody participating.”

Meanwhile, Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman says England have been given reassurances there are no safety concerns over their Women’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine being held in Turkey on Tuesday.

Turkey borders Iran and Iraq and is close to Cyprus, where an Iranian drone crashed into a British RAF base on Sunday. Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have also exchanged strikes.

The Finalissima match between European champions Spain and Copa America winners Argentina at Qatar’s at Lusail Stadium on 27 March is in doubt after the Qatar Football Association suspended all matches indefinitely.

Medvedev among tennis stars stuck

Dubai Tennis Championships winner Daniil Medvedev is among the tennis players facing a disruption to their schedule.

The Russian’s representative said they were trying to establish how Medvedev could travel to California for next week’s Indian Wells tournament after the UAE “partially and temporarily” closed its airspace.

Finland’s Harri Heliovaara, winner of the men’s doubles event alongside Britain’s Henry Patten, said his travel plans are “still uncertain”.

“All of us players, the finalists and a few other doubles players, are stuck in Dubai. [Plus] all of the ATP staff, the umpires, physiotherapists, coaches and other team and family members – a total of about 30 people,” Heliovaara wrote in his blog, external.

He added that the option of leaving by road had been explored, but that would involve either a five-hour drive to Muscat – although bad traffic jams have been reported at the Oman border – or a journey exceeding 10 hours to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The ATP said it remains in direct contact with those affected, with “a small number of players and team members” still in Dubai being accommodated in official tournament hotels “where their immediate needs are being fully supported”.

The ATP Challenger Tour event in Fujairah, UAE is going ahead as planned this week, but operating with heightened security measures and taking place behind closed doors as a precautionary step.

Arrival of Paralympic ‘stakeholders’ impacted

The 2026 Winter Paralympics begin in Milan and Cortina on Friday but the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has confirmed that the closure of airspace “is impacting the arrival of some stakeholders”.

The IPC said it was “assessing the impact on Games operations, in particular on travel” and remains in close contact with all delegations competing at the Games.

“We would prefer not to comment on the status of individual delegations or stakeholders at this stage but can provide assurance that we are working diligently with Milano-Cortina 2026 to find solutions for those affected,” the IPC said.

In badminton, India’s Olympic and world medallist PV Sindhu remains stuck in Dubai, leaving her participation at the All England Championships – which start on Tuesday – in doubt.

Wales’ women’s hockey team were due to fly to Hyderabad, India via Dubai to face Scotland, Uruguay and India between 8-14 March but have had to reschedule their flights.

Putin Condemns Ayatollah Khamenei Killing as ‘Cynical Violation’ of International Law

Vladimir Putin has shamelessly condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a ‘cynical violation’ of ‘international law’, as the ‘axis of evil’ comes together in a chorus of condemnation.

The Russian dictator said the joint US-Israeli strikes on the Supreme Leader’s home in Tehran on Saturday – which also killed his daughter, grandchild, daughter-in-law and son-in-law – lacked ‘human morality’.

In a note to Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin said: ‘Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, committed in cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law.’

His comments on Sunday came just days after the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Putin was joined by other leaders of the so-called axis of evil in condemning Khamenei’s killing – as China and North Korea linked arms with Russia.

China ‘strongly condemns’ the US-Israeli joint operation and called again for a halt to military actions.

Beijing’s foreign ministry said the killing was ‘a serious violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security, a trampling on the aims and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations’.

‘China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this’, it added, calling for an ‘immediate halting of military operations’.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has said the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is a 'cynical violation' of 'international law'

The condemnation came just after Chinese state media reported a phone call between Beijing’s foreign minister Wang Yi and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

During the conversation, which state news agency Xinhua said was initiated by Lavrov, Wang said the ‘blatant killing of a sovereign leader and the incitement of regime change’ by the US and Israel was ‘unacceptable’.

China is ‘highly concerned’ the ‘situation in the Middle East could be pushed into a dangerous abyss’, Wang told Lavrov, according to Xinhua.

‘The international community must send a definite and clear message opposing the world’s regression to the law of the jungle,’ Wang said.

Beijing has urged its citizens in Iran to evacuate the country ‘as soon as possible’.

Reiterating those calls Sunday, the foreign ministry said Chinese passport holders could leave Iran on visa-free land routes into Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey.

North Korea has also joined the chorus of condemnation, with Pyongyang declaring the US-Israeli operation as an ‘illegal act of aggression’ which revealed Washington’s ‘gangster-like’ nature.

The strikes ‘constitute a thoroughly illegal act of aggression and the most vile form of violation of sovereignty in their nature’, a spokesperson for the North’s foreign ministry said.

PS Omollo: State constructing 47,000 houses for security officers

The Governance and Public Administration (GPA) Sub-Committee of the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC) has reviewed progress across key priority programmes under the governance cluster, including security sector housing, digital government services, citizen registration, and the Government Legislative Agenda.

The Sub-Committee noted steady progress under the National Institutional Housing Programme to address housing deficits within the police and prison services and later expanded to include additional security agencies under the Affordable Housing Framework.

The security cluster now represents the largest and most advanced institutional housing pipeline under the Affordable Housing Programme with a current housing portfolio comprising of 165 projects across the country and delivering a total pipeline of 47,464 units.

To date, 2,092 housing units have been completed while 9,555 units are under active construction and another 24,720 units under procurement.

Major ongoing police housing developments that are underway include at the GSU Headquarters in Ruaraka, Kiganjo Training School, and the GSU Training School in Embakasi, alongside other strategic sites aimed at reducing accommodation deficits in high-demand operational areas.

In parallel, the KDF Affordable Housing Programme is delivering housing units across Kahawa, Embakasi, Langata, Moi Airbase, Lanet, Gilgil, Nanyuki and Mariakani military camps.

The 500-unit development at Roysambu has already been completed and handed over while the completion of other units is scheduled between January 2026 and January 2028.

On digital transformation, the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services reported that 22,665 government services have been onboarded onto the e-Citizen platform out of 26,550 identified services that are targeted by 30th June 2026.

The introduction of Government-to-Government services on the platform has also commenced, beginning with selected state corporations and foreign missions in Nairobi.

With enhanced technical and financial support, the onboarding of specific services within the National Police Service and Correctional Services will be accelerated to expedite integration.

Under the Usajili Mashinani mobile registration initiative100,195 identity cards have been issued since September 2025, including 70,648 first-time registrations. A total of 52,262 birth certificates were issued during the exercise.

To strengthen outreach, 45 new vehicles have been acquired and additional registry and civil registration offices are being operationalized in the current financial year.

This has enhanced inclusion for citizens in remote areas, and strengthened access to government programmes that require official identification.

On the Government Legislative Agenda, the Sub-Committee focused on completed legislative business that has strengthened governance and accountability frameworks within the cluster.

Several key Bills have now been assented into law, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Act, 2022: the Conflict-of-Interest Act, 2023; the National Lottery Act, 2023; and the Gambling Control Act, 2023.

In addition, the Public Benefits Organizations Act has been operationalized following gazettement of its commencement date.

The operationalization of the Diaspora Integrated Information Management System (DIIMS), now provides integrated digital services to Kenyans living abroad.

The platform strengthens engagement with the diaspora community, enhances service accessibility, and supports data-driven policy planning in line with the Kenya Diaspora Policy 2024.

The meeting, chaired by the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo brought together Principal Secretaries and senior officials from key departments within the Governance and Public Administration cluster, including Parliamentary Affairs (Dr. Aurelia Rono), Immigration and Citizen Services (Dr. Bellio Kipsang), Correctional Services (Dr. Salome Beacco), Devolution (Michael Lenasalon), Science and Research (Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak), National Police Service (Bernice Lemedeket) and Solicitor General (Shadrack Mose).

The Principals while appreciating the progress, reaffirmed their collective commitment to strengthening implementation oversight, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and accelerating delivery of priority programmes in governance and security sector reform.

Family Reveals Burial Date for Emurua Dikkir MP Johana Ng’eno Killed in Plane Crash

The family of former Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament, the late Johana Ng’eno, will be buried on Friday, March 6.

Speaking to the press on Monday, March 1, Kajiado County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu stated that the decision had been reached after deliberations with the families of all the victims.

Ntutu, who is the late Ng’eno’s brother-in-law, disclosed that a requiem mass would be held in Nairobi for all the victims.

“We have settled on Friday as the day of the funeral. On Wednesday, we will have special prayers for the five who departed us,” he explained.

The Governor revealed that the late Ng’eno’s body will be ferried home on Thursday, in line with the Kalenjin traditions.

“According to Kalenjin customs, anyone who dies and was married with children, his body must spend the night in his house,” he reiterated.

The same will also be done for the body of TikToker Sportpesa Ronoh. The bodies of the three other young men will arrive at their homes on Friday morning.

Ntutu intimated that the funeral service would be held at the Emurua Dikkir Primary School, after which the bodies of each of the five individuals would be moved to their respective homes for burial.

The County Chief pleaded with individuals raising speculations about the incident that claimed the late MP’s life to allow the investigating agencies to probe the matter.

He also called out political leaders using Ng’eno’s death for political mileage and to spread negative propaganda. The governor asked them to accord the family of thedeceased with respect during this difficult time.

His sentiments came as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disclosed that Ng’eno was the MP he was having a conversation with when he was secretly recorded by intelligence agents in Kisumu.

Gachagua claimed that the deceased had warned him about his impending impeachment and claimed foul play in the MP’s death.

Ng’eno was among the five who died in a chopper crash on February 28, after the aircraft developed complications when trying to take off in misty conditions.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir disclosed that the government had launched a probe into the accident.

Unite or Perish: Ruth Odinga warns against ODM division, calls for unity

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has called for the dissolution of the rival Linda Ground and Linda Mwananchi factions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Ruth said ODM must consolidate its ranks and emerge as one formidable political force capable of negotiating structured pre-election coalitions from a position of strength.

“My stand has not changed; I want one strong united ODM Party. We need to collapse ‘Linda Ground’ and ‘Linda Wananchi’ and whatever other faction out there into one formidable force,” she said.

She issued the statement after meeting Kisumu Central Constituency ODM delegates and party executives at the sub-county offices in Kisumu City during an engagement ahead of county elections scheduled for later this week.

Ruth emphasised the importance of internal unity, noting that the party still has time under the law to organise itself before entering into any coalition arrangements.

“Last time I checked, the Political Parties Act gives parties up to May 2027 (or three months before elections) to deposit their pre-election coalition agreements with them. That means we must make use of the available time to put our Orange house in order,” she said.

Her remarks come amid growing tensions between the two informal factions within ODM.

Linda Ground is associated with leaders perceived to be open to supporting President William Ruto’s re-election bid, while Linda Mwananchi is largely opposed to granting the President another term.

Linda Ground is led by Siaya Senator and ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga, while Linda Mwananchi is spearheaded by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Ruth dismissed claims that her calls for unity amount to disrespect toward the party leadership.

“I have been accused of disrespecting our Party Leader, Dr Oburu Oginga. How does calling for ‘wantam’ and ‘tutam’ proponents to come together and work as a single voice amount to disrespect?” she posed.

She reiterated her respect for Oburu’s leadership, saying: “Dr Oburu is the ODM Party Leader and everyone in ODM must respect that. I speak to him regularly as the Party Leader and as my elder brother over a variety of issues.”

However, she lamented that some individuals have sought to portray her unity campaign as a personal feud.

“I am an old woman. Where do I get the energy to fight Youth Leader? Those claiming I am fighting Dr Oburu are the real enemies of ODM. I always speak my mind because ODM is a democratic party; it doesn’t mean I am fighting anyone,” she said.

Ruth further underscored the need to strengthen youth inclusion within the party, arguing that ODM must deliberately create space for young leaders across all levels of its leadership structure.

Ruth Odinga Breaks Silence on Claims of Bad Blood Between Her and Oburu

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has maintained that there is no bad blood between her and her elder brother and ODM party leader, Oburu Odinga.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 1, Ruth dismissed claims that she had disrespected Oburu by not taking sides in the ongoing party wrangles.

She reiterated her position that ODM must remain united as a party and argued that holding a different opinion from the Party Leader does not amount to disrespect.

“How does calling for ‘wantam’ and ‘tutam’ proponents to come together and work as a single voice amount to disrespect?

“I am an old woman. Where do I get the energy to fight the Youth Leader? Those claiming I am fighting Dr Oburu are the real enemies of ODM,” the Woman Rep posed.

PHOTO | COURTESY Kisumu Woman Rep Ruth Odinga during a meeting with ODM delegates in Kisumu on March 2, 2026.

Ruth maintained that the relationship between her and her older brother was intact, and the two spoke at length about several issues apart from the party.

She maintained that Oburu was the legitimate ODM party leader and demanded that everyone within the party respect him.

However, she urged the party to involve young people in the leadership structures demanded for the disbandment of the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ and ‘Linda Ground’ factions.

“As I have always said, we must figure out as a party the inclusion of youth voices in party affairs across the party leadership hierarchy,” the MP added.

The Kisumu Woma Rep insisted that an ODM that was united would have more bargaining chips when negotiating to form a political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.

She also claimed that there was enough time to sort out internal issues and weigh out its options before finally entering a pre-election pact.

The Woman Rep was among the few leaders within the ODM National Delegates Committee who tried to save embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna from his ouster.

Odinga has also been very adamant about the implementation of the NADCO report and the 10-point agenda agreed upon during the formulation of the broad-based government.

US Issues Warning to Citizens Worldwide as Middle East Conflict Intensifies

The United States has issued a security warning to American citizens worldwide following escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement on Monday, March 2, the embassy urged Americans to remain vigilant and adhere to official guidance from U.S. missions abroad.

“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

“They may experience travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures,” the statement read.

The embassy further emphasized the need for heightened caution and encouraged citizens to stay informed through official State Department platforms.

“The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution. Enroll at step.state.gov to receive the latest security alerts and follow the U.S. Department of State – Security Updates for U.S. Citizens channel on WhatsApp,” the statement added.

Americans planning international travel were also urged to carefully review official advisories and updates before departure.

“When planning travel, read carefully our Travel Advisory, country information, and any recent alerts,” the statement concluded.

Elsewhere, President William Ruto has condemned strikes by Iran targeting Middle East nations, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar.

In a statement on Monday, March 2, the president warned that the regionalization of the conflict represents a grave danger to international peace and security.

“Kenya strongly condemns the strikes on the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain in the evolving conflict in the Middle East. It is evident that the regionalization of this conflict poses a grave threat to international peace and security,” he stated.

Ruto emphasized that longstanding multilateral institutions remain indispensable in resolving the Iran crisis.

He called for an urgent multi-stakeholder engagement to de-escalate the ongoing crisis.

“At this defining and perilous moment in global history, longstanding multilateral institutions remain indispensable frameworks for the resolution of the current crisis in the Middle East. Kenya calls for urgent multi-stakeholder engagement towards de-escalation,” he concluded.

Weatherman: Nairobi, Kiambu and Nakuru Among Regions to Experience Intensified Rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department has revealed that the entire Nairobi Metropolitan Area would receive continued moderate rainfall except in Westlands.

In a forecast published on Monday, March 2, Kenya Met revealed that Westlands will experience heavy rainfall within the next 25 hours.

“Several areas are likely to experience moderate rainfall, with localised pockets of heavier rainfall, especially over parts of Westlands and surrounding areas,” the statement read in part.

Kenya Met predicted that showers will be experienced during the day and night with isolated heavy rainfall.

The Department further called on Kenyans to share photo and video updates of adverse weather conditions with the agency.

The Weatherman further warned of waterlogging in low-lying and poorly drained areas within the Nairobi Metropolis.

Kiambu, Kabete, Kiambaa, Githunguri, and Gatundu will also receive very heavy rainfall, while Kajiado and Machakos Counties will experience moderate rainfall.

Earlier, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga asked Kenyans to take advantage of the rainy season and harvest water.

The rainfall season led to traffic disruptions and flooding. Several deaths have also been reported in Nairobi and across the country in relation to the bad weather.

On Saturday, Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and five others died after their chopper crashed while trying to fly during adverse weather conditions.

In Nairobi, a Grade 9 pupil died after being swept away by flooding waters in Nairobi West after he fell into an open sewer.

In Narok County, four people died after a tour vehicle was swept away while trying to cross a flooded river at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

President Ruto Reveals Number of Kenyans Killed in Road Accidents Last Year

President William Ruto has warned of the escalating road safety crisis in Kenya, revealing that road accidents claimed 5,009 lives last year.

Speaking during the Presentation of a Report by the National Council on the Administration of Justice on Traffic Accidents and Deaths on Monday, March 2, he said the figure represents an increase of 261 deaths compared to 2024.

“Kenya records more than 4,000 road fatalities annually. Last year alone, 5,009 deaths were reported on our roads, an increase of 261 compared to 2024,” he said.

Ruto noted that beyond the human toll, road crashes are inflicting significant economic losses on the country.

“These accidents and their ensuing fatalities and injuries cost our economy the equivalent of 5% of our GDP, translating to an estimated loss of Ksh450 billion annually,” he added.

Ruto also singled out the 2025 festive season as particularly tragic, even as he acknowledged ongoing efforts to address the challenge.

“During the 2025 festive season alone, 415 deaths were recorded, a 23% increase from the previous year. I am, however, encouraged that deliberate steps are already being taken to confront this challenge,” he continued.

Ruto said enforcement measures rolled out during the festive season had started to bear fruit.

He noted that the crackdown had led to a notable drop in fatalities involving Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).

“I am pleased to note that the interventions during the festive season yielded measurable gains. The deployment of 36 prosecutors, 40 officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and 121 officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority significantly strengthened enforcement.

“As a result, fatalities involving Public Service Vehicles declined by 10%, largely due to intensified oversight. This initiative has, therefore, established a viable and replicable national model for managing traffic offences,” he further said.

File image of an accident along Thika Road

Addressing the causes of road carnage, Ruto outlined a range of contributing factors affecting motorists, operators and pedestrians alike.

“Major contributors include reckless driving, speeding and drunk driving, poor driver training, widespread unlicensed riding, unroadworthy vehicles, counterfeit spare parts, unsafe road design, and the high vulnerability of pedestrians and motorcyclists. Economic pressures on PSV operators are also contributing to risky behaviour,” he explained.

Ruto further pointed to systemic gaps within the justice system that undermine efforts to curb traffic offences.

“The pilot further exposed critical weaknesses within the justice chain. These include persistent corruption and roadside bribery, delays in investigations and prosecutions, weak evidence management systems, digital gaps, inconsistent fines, absence of traffic-specific sentencing guidelines, limited capacity of the workforce, funding constraints, and weak enforcement of Notices to Attend Court,” he stated.

Who is Ayatollah Alireza Arafi? Iran’s ‘seasoned cleric’ succeeds Khamenei as interim supreme leader

Iran on Monday, March 2, appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as its interim supreme leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint United States (U.S) -Israeli airstrike on Saturday.

The appointment was announced as the country begins formal preparations for a leadership transition.

Ayatollah Arafi will discharge the responsibilities of the supreme leader pending the selection of a substantive successor by the assembly of experts, the constitutional body tasked with appointing and supervising the nation’s highest authority.

In line with Iran’s legal provisions for succession, Arafi will serve on an interim three-member leadership council alongside president Masoud Pezeshkian and chief justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.

The council is mandated to oversee the functions of the supreme leader during the transitional period.

The 67-year-old Arafi is a senior cleric with decades of experience within Iran’s religious and political establishment.

He previously served on the influential guardian council and was confirmed as a member of the interim body by the expediency discernment council.

He studied in the holy city of Qom, Iran’s foremost seminary centre, under prominent scholars and attained the rank of mujtahid, which authorises him to issue independent Islamic legal rulings.

Further details on the succession process are expected as the assembly of experts convenes to determine Iran’s next supreme leader.
