Dialogue Stalemate: Azimio, Kenya Kwanza Issue New Demands To Parliament

The National Dialogue team has urged House leaders to expedite the drafting of a motion to formally recognize the committee in order to bind its deliberations.

During its first official session, the members resolved to assign the technical committee the role of reviewing the issues raised by both parties and listing them to prioritize key agenda items, as well as assisting the committee in determining how long the talks will take.

Despite great expectations that the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio discussions will begin, a technical committee meeting held prior to the talks failed to reach an agreement on the list of issues.

With some of the issues expected to create bills and maybe a review of the law, the technical committee is expected to collaborate with the parliament’s secretariat to begin its drafting.

The technical committee will meet throughout the week to address preliminary concerns such as the duration of the talks, noting that the Azimio coalition has vowed to resume public protests if a resolution is not achieved by the end of the month.

US Presence In Ruto-Raila Dialogue Raises Eyebrows — What Is He Doing Here?

The sudden presence of US Senator Chris Coons in the country has caused a new rift in the ongoing Azimio, Kenya Kwanza talks.

The Delaware Senator arrived in Kenya and met Raila Odinga at an undisclosed residence in Nairobi.

The senator is no stranger in Nairobi.

Senator Coons was key in getting retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga together, resulting in the handshake that Kenya Kwanza has violently rejected.

In March 2023, Coons arrived to mediate a solution to the looming Maandamano chaos.

After meeting President Ruto, DP Rigathi Gachagua, and Raila Odinga, Ruto invited Raila to Bipartisan talks, effectively ending Maandamano.

However, the talks collapsed, and Coons has returned to the country, just in time for the Bomas Bilateral talks in Nairobi.

The committee’s handling of Azimio’s requests to involve members of the diplomatic corps and religious leaders in the talks has been put on hold until a framework for their inclusion is agreed upon.

Raila Odinga has mentioned the hand of Former Nigeria President Obasanjo in mediating solutions. A claim that the Kenya Kwanza team has never verified.

With Coons ‘In the mix’ the talks have been largely rumoured to end in a handshake or a similar event.

China Launches Swahili Version of President Xi Jinping’s book, “Government of China

China has launched the Swahili version of President Xi Jinping’s book, “Governance of China,” at the University of Nairobi.

The book, titled “Utawala Wa China,” was published in collaboration between the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, the Foreign Language Press, and the Kenya Literature Bureau.

The book explains the historical and cultural background of China’s development path, emphasizing its unique culture, traditions, history, and context.

Hu, China’s Tourism and Culture Minister, called the Swahili book of President Xi’s Governance of China a “major milestone.”

“I am glad to learn that friends in many countries, including Kenya, are very keen to know more about the experiences of China’s development, and the governance philosophy and practices of the Chinese leadership. History connects the past to the present, and we always carry our present into the future. China’s development path is shaped by its own unique culture, traditions, history and context,” he said.

The book promotes China-Kenya diplomatic relations and partnership in matters of governance and is spoken by over 200 million people across East Africa.

The book is gaining popularity among Chinese in China who are keen to visit the region.

Kenya’s Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza said the publication of the book in Kiswahili language will help Kenyans understand the social undertaking of Chinese President Xi Jinping and promote knowledge sharing and cultural exchange between China and Kenya.

The Tourism CS said that Kenya and China have embarked on many cultural exchanges, nurturing a more vibrant people to People dialogue through culture.

“The bond between Kenya and China have flourished over time and Kenya will continue pursuing even stronger ties because culture is a beacon that guides nations towards their destinies and resonates deeply in chronicles of development,” she said.

The nurturing of the Kiswahili language in China symbolizes its big influence and symbolizes linguistic appreciation.

Gerhard: Notorious Sex Offender Sentenced To Twelve Life Sentences

The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced Gerhard Ackerman, a notorious serial offender, to 12 life sentences for his extensive record of sexual crimes against children in South Africa.

Presiding Judge Mohamed Ismail ruled that the 12 life terms would run concurrently, underscoring the gravity of Ackerman’s heinous acts.

In a landmark trial in April, the court found Ackerman guilty of attempted murder and an array of sexual offenses targeting minors, with a predominant focus on young boys.

Among the grave sexual offences, Ackerman was convicted of rape, human trafficking, the sinister grooming of minors, as well as the production, possession, and distribution of child pornography.

Moreover, the court disclosed that Ackerman is currently under trial for a separate case of child sexual abuse, allegedly committed at a Johannesburg country club back in 2018.

The tragic passing of Paul Kennedy, Ackerman’s alleged accomplice, cast a somber shadow over the proceedings. Kennedy, who held roles as an advocate and acting judge, tragically died by suicide in February 2022, prior to the commencement of the trial.

Kennedy had been implicated in aiding Ackerman’s operation of a harrowing child sex abuse ring, with additional allegations of transmitting HIV to certain victims referred to him by Ackerman.

Following the sentencing, a twist emerged as Ackerman took the surprising step of dismissing his legal representation. Speaking to the press, he staunchly maintained his innocence against the majority, if not all, of the charges levied against him.

Ackerman announced his intention to petition for a retrial of the case.

Chelsea Completes Caicedo Move Worth A British Record Fee

Chelsea have completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for a £100m fee that could rise to a British club record of £115m.

Liverpool agreed a £111m deal for the 21-year-old Ecuador player on Friday.

But Caicedo’s preference was Chelsea and they finally succeeded with a bid on Sunday evening after having a succession of offers rejected.

“I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club,” Caicedo said.

“It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”

Caicedo, who joined Brighton for £4m in February 2021, has agreed an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge and the Blues have an option of a further year.

The additional £15m in payments is based mostly on appearances and Brighton expect to receive the entire £115m within a short period of time.

The Seagulls have also negotiated a significant sell-on clause for the midfielder.

If Chelsea pay the full £115m fee it would mean they break the British club record twice in 2023, following the £107m purchase of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January.

Blow To Banks As Safaricom Raises Daily Transaction Limit To Sh500,000

From Tuesday, August 15, you will be allowed to transact and hold 500,000 shillings in your M-Pesa account.

This comes after the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) approved Safaricom’s request to raise M-Pesa account limits to Sh500,000, bringing competition to digital lenders, microfinance institutions, and commercial banks.

The new approvals effectively transform Safaricom into a huge digital bank, shifting the battle for banking services away from traditional brick-and-mortar banking halls and onto clients’ phones.

Kenyans are familiar with the idea of a digital bank, as most institutions have embraced internet platforms in order to survive.

Safaricom’s current transaction limit of Sh150,000 will continue, the company added.

Even yet, clients can make as many transactions as they want up to the daily limit of Sh500,000.

The increased limitations will allow consumers and enterprises to use their M-Pesa savings and business capital in the same way as they would a traditional bank account, allowing Safaricom to compete with commercial lenders for digital transactions.

According to Safaricom, the move will benefit businesses, particularly SMEs, as the number of cashless transactions grows.

Omtatah’s Petition Challenging Finance Act 2023 To Be Heard On August 28

The petition challenging implementation of the 2023 Finance Act has finally landed at the Apex Court in Kenya with the Supreme Court setting August 28 to give directions on a case filed by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah challenging Court of Appeal order allowing the implementation of the hotly disputed 2023 Finance Act.

The case, according to Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Kenya Bernard Kasavuli, will be virtually mentioned on August 28 when further orders will be issued.

The Deputy Registrar directed Omtatah to serve the petition of appeal filed in court on August 9 on CS Treasury Prof Njuguna Ndungu and ten others.

Omtatah has stated in his Supreme Court appeal that it will be impossible to restore the damage created by the Finance Act after they successfully explain to the Court how Kenyans were exposed to an unlawful tax regime.

On this basis, he has petitioned the Supreme Court to stay the Court of Appeal’s orders, which set the way for the Finance Act’s implementation.

The Court of Appeal recently overturned a High Court order rendered on July that had temporarily halted implementation of the Finance Act 2023.

Real Madrid Sign Chelsea Keeper Kepa On Loan

Real Madrid have signed Spain goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea on a season-long loan.

The 28-year-old will cover for Madrid’s regular number-one Thibaut Courtois, who will miss most of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Kepa has made 163 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Athletic Bilbao for £71m in August 2018 – the highest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper.

He faced competition at the Blues from summer signing Robert Sanchez.

Fellow Spaniard Sanchez, a £25m arrival from Brighton, started Sunday’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.

Chelsea sold Senegal international goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli earlier this summer.

Kepa’s exit leaves 31-year-old Marcus Bettinelli as the only other senior goalkeeper in their squad, alongside 20-year-old Lucas Bergstrom and 19-year-old Eddie Beach.

Real Madrid opened their campaign with a 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, with England midfielder Jude Bellingham, an £88.5m summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund, among the scorers.

PSG Reach Deal With Al Hilal To Sell Brazilian Neymar-BBC

Paris St Germain have agreed a deal with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for the sale of Brazilian forward Neymar with the deal subject to the player completing his medical, the BBC reported on Monday.

The BBC reported the transfer fee to be about 90 million euros ($98.56 million) plus add-ons.

Neymar, who joined PSG in 2017 from Spanish club Barcelona for a world record transfer fee of 222 million euros ($243 million), missed PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against Lorient on Saturday due to a viral infection.

Neymar was contracted to stay in the French capital until 2025 and has 118 goals in 173 appearances, capturing numerous trophies including five Ligue 1 titles.

Al Hilal had tried to sign the Brazilian’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe. They were also reportedly interested in Argentine Lionel Messi who opted to join Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami.

The most successful club in Saudi Arabia and Asia, Al Hilal have won 66 trophies and hold the record for league and Asian Champions League titles, with 18 and four.

Strengthening the squad is a priority for the Riyadh-based club, as the Saudi Public Investment Fund announced in June an investment and privatisation project for sports clubs involving league champions Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Nassr and Al Hilal.

Sweden, Spain Gear Up For ‘High Pressure’ World Cup Semifinal

The penultimate stage of a major tournament is familiar territory for Sweden and although they have failed to clear that hurdle several times recently, that strong pedigree could serve them well against Spain in their Women’s World Cup semifinal.

The two teams will vie for a spot in the final at Auckland’s Eden Park on Tuesday, setting up a showdown in Sydney with either co-hosts Australia or European champions England for the chance to be crowned a first-time World Cup winner.

“It’s going to be a high-pressure Spain and high-pressure Sweden,” Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson said. “For me, it’s lovely football.”

Sweden are the highest-ranked nation remaining – at world No 3 – and are appearing at their fifth World Cup semifinal. They have played in all nine editions but only reached the final once, when they lost to Germany in 2003.

The Scandinavians have not won a major trophy since the inaugural 1984 Euros, when only four teams took part. They also reached the semifinals of last year’s Euros and the 2019 World Cup, and have been runners-up at the last two Olympics.

Sweden won all three group games this tournament and dispatched two World Cup winners – the United States and Japan – in the knockouts. They will be confident of continuing that momentum against Spain, who have never reached the last four of the showpiece tournament.

“We have the benefit of experience,” captain Kosovare Asllani said. “We have gone far in the last few tournaments but I am particularly pleased with the way we have done it this time.

“We have won our matches in different ways and it shows the strength of this team.”

Spain’s only previous semifinal appearance at a major tournament was at the 1997 Euros. They made their World Cup debut in 2015 and their best result prior to this tournament was a last 16 exit four years ago.

After seeing off 2019 runners-up Netherlands, they are now one win away from a first final, less than a year after 15 players staged a revolt against long-serving coach Jorge Vilda and threatened to quit if he was not fired.

Spain are winless in 11 meetings against Sweden – none of which were at a World Cup – and have lost seven of those games. The teams drew 1-1 in a friendly last October in Cordoba.

“If you don’t feel any nerves before a game like this then something is not right,” veteran forward Jenni Hermoso said. “It gives you goosebumps thinking about how close we are to the final … Spain will come out more determined than ever.

“We have worked so hard to get here … I want the whole team to enjoy it and for the whole of Spain to be behind us.”
