Persons With Disabilities To Benefit From Mobility Devices Donation

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has entered into a partnership agreement with Hope Mobility Kenya (HMK) geared towards the provision of mobility devices to persons with disabilities in Kenya.

Speaking during the signing of the agreement, NCPWD Executive Director Mr. Harun Hassan noted that the partnership would go a long way in addressing the needs of a large number of persons with disabilities who lacked the necessary assistive devices in the country.

“The devices that have been donated as a result of the agreement between the two parties will go a long way in supporting our programmes and services to persons with disabilities. We are grateful for the generous support we have received and it is very much in line with our strategy of engaging and collaborating with stakeholders and well-wishers to support the cause for disability inclusion,” he said.

The two organisations will collaborate in the identification and provision of mobility aids using the World Health Organisation’s eight steps of wheel chair provision i.e.  referral and appointment, assessment, prescription, funding and ordering, product (wheelchair) preparation, fitting, user training, maintenance and follow up.

HMK Director Mr. Jack Muthui said the non-profit organisation focused on the provision of a wide range of mobility aids including wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and others to realize the rights enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and to meet the sustainable development goals.

“Wheelchairs provide mobility, postural support, freedom and above all else, dignity to those who cannot walk or have difficulty walking, enabling them to move around, participate in everyday activities and live life on their own terms. They are a vital asset that enables PWDs to have access to places and activities that would otherwise be inaccessible,” said Muthui.

The council that recently concluded a massive nationwide registration exercise for PWDs said they would go back to their database with a specialist assessment team of professionals across health, education and social services, who would then visit the shortlisted persons to assess their individual needs before donating the wheel chairs.

The process may also involve a rehabilitation engineer who will make any adjustments or add features and fixtures such as special postural seating.

Over the years, the Council has collaborated with stakeholders to bridge the gap of providing services to persons with disabilities due to challenges of insufficient financial resources, a challenge that is experienced by a majority of them.

Government Launches Free Wi-Fi In Magunga

Residents of Suba South constituency are a delighted lot after the government set up free WiFi in Magunga Township of Homa Bay County.

Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eluid Owalo said the free WiFi will enable residents transact their businesses online.

He urged the fisherfolk who are the predominant in the area to maximise the use of the free internet to market their produce noting that the project was part of the Kenya Kwanza bottom-up transformation agenda.

The CS who was accompanied by Speaker of National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi and Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero made the remarks on Sunday in Magunga Township during the launch of the project.

Owalo told the fishing community to utilise the Wifi effectively to enhance their income.

“This Wi-Fi can be used for marketing fish produced in Lake Victoria not only in local markets but also in foreign countries,”he said.

He said when President William Ruto was campaigning in the county, residents complained of the high cost of data bundles.

“Today, we are here to give you free WiFi to enable you participate properly in economic growth,” Owalo said.

He said the government is also committed to digitizing services to Kenyans through WiFi.

Owalo said this will enable citizens to acquire the services from their comfort zones.

He said they had digitized more than 5000 government services and they expect to digitize a total of 10,000 by the end of the year.

“We want to make government services available to every citizen online to save them the cost incurred travelling to government offices,” Owalo said.

Wetang’ula told residents to embrace information technology to ease the cost of doing business.

Omondi said the WiFi will enable residents to acquire many job opportunities. This will be achieved through accessing job opportunities advertised online.

“Our youths will also be able to do online jobs for a living.  Families will also be able to communicate effectively with their relatives who are abroad,” Omondi said.

He described the project to be noble for residents of Suba South.

“This is the first time we are getting WiFi in this constituency. Let us continue supporting the government for more projects to be implemented in our constituency,” Omondi said.

Dr Kidero stressed that they will continue to work with the government despite leaders who insult them.

“There are leaders who insult us because we are working with the government. I tell them that we will continue doing so for the benefit of our people,” Dr Kidero said.

Illicit Brew Traders Device New Tricks Ply Their Trade

Illicit brew traders in Tharaka Nithi have devised tricks to evade the measures laid out by the combined efforts of the county and national government administration, village elders and other local authorities to eradicate the vice.

Speaking to the press outside his office yesterday, Governor Muthomi Njuki disclosed that the unscrupulous traders have started using new ways like using thermos flasks, juice cans and bottles to stock illegal alcohol in hotels and other recreation centers while disguising it as a refreshment

Njuki further revealed that other illicit traders store jerricans full of brew on trees tops, on hilltops and use a phone code servive ' outside catering’ to sell illicit brews and alcohol outside the authorised time adding many ventures into the deepest places of natural forests to store the brew.

“Another method is the use of knapsack sprayers to ferry the brew by pretending to be headed to their farms to spray crops. I urge residents of the county to be mindful of their health because an apparatus used to store chemicals when substituted for a product for human consumption will certainly endanger their health,” Njuki emphasised.

He further called on the multi-agency team to be properly securing the targeted area to ensure their operation is done covertly.

He claimed some revellers are crossing over to other counties and in their defense they say that they have not bought or drunk the brew within the county.

“Those claiming that they have been drinking in other counties after they have been arrested by the police, let them know that all counties are operating under the same law and hence their argument does not hold water. They will be arrested and will be taken to court,” Governor Njuki added.

He said as the campaign against illicit brews is getting tougher and more thorough, bars like Palace Inn in Marimanti market in Tharaka South, have been in the sportlight for their arrogance to comply with the laws and rules of operation. Their licenses have been revoked and the bars closed.

The governor further cautioned that there are people selling animal feeds to the brewers using the backdoor and this is what is bringing strains between the authority and the operation of fighting illicit brew.

His sentiments were echoed by the County Commissioner, Wesley Koech who assured the people of Tharaka Nithi that the fruits of this campaign are evident as at the moment because families are being united as husbands and sons have gone back to their homes due to the closure of the drinking dens and places.

“We are gearing towards eliminating these second and third generation alcohol and ensuring that people remain sober around the county. This operation should not be left to the police and the area managers alone. Let’s all be vigilant,” said Mr Koech.

The County Commissioner emphasised that the media should work together with the community and authorities in the enforcement of the laws and regulations and further urged everybody to be on the lookout for secret suppliers and dens and report to the area managers and the police.

He said the rules and regulations set by the alcoholic control act and liquor licensing board have specified times that all bars should operate and hence those operating during illegal hours and claiming to be under the protection of certain authorities should be arrested and taken court.

Njuki hailed Community Health Volunteers (CHVS) and Area Managers in places like Kithino location in Chiakariga Sub- County and Mwerera sub-location in Tharaka South sub-county since these areas have long remained illicit brew free zones.

Zuckerberg Says Musk ‘Not Serious’ About Cage Fight

Elon Musk “isn’t serious” about holding a cage fight and “it’s time to move on”, Mark Zuckerberg has said.

In a post on his social media site Threads, the Meta boss said he had offered Mr Musk “a real date” but the rival entrepreneur had made excuses.

Mr Musk had earlier on Sunday suggested on his own messaging site X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was willing to fight as early as Monday.

The billionaires agreed to the bout in June, sparking huge media attention.

But despite egging each other on for months, the rivals have yet to secure a date, raising doubts the fight will ever go ahead.

The war of words was complicated by the launch of Threads in July, with the rival messaging app to X attracting more than 100 million sign-ups in less than a week.

That number has fallen back, and X remains comfortably ahead with around 350 million users – but Mr Musk has threatened to sue Facebook for “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets”.

Meta denies the claims.

Last week, Mr Zuckerberg said he had proposed 26 August for the cage fight. Then in a twist on Friday, Italy’s culture minister said that he had spoken to Mr Musk about hosting the showdown in the country as a charity event.

Mr Musk suggested it would have “an ancient Rome theme”.

On Sunday, however, the Meta boss posted on Threads: “Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead.

“If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”

Responding on X, however, Mr Musk called the Meta boss a “chicken”.

Earlier, Mr Musk had posted a text message exchange on the messaging platform purportedly between himself and Mr Zuckerberg.

Safaricom Foundation Marks 20 Years, Sh5 Billion Worth of Community Projects

Safaricom Foundation is today marking 20 years since it was officially launched on 14th August 2003.

Since its inception, the Foundation has invested over KES 5 billion in more than 4,000 community projects, directly impacting over 8 million Kenyans across all 47 counties in the areas of education, health, economic empowerment, access to water, environmental conservation, and disaster response.

“In the past two decades, Safaricom Foundation has grown to become one of the biggest enablers of Kenyan communities. Whether through partnering with individuals on small investments that have a big impact, or implementing large-scale, long-term programs of nationwide scale, our purpose of transforming lives has always been at the core of the Foundation,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

To mark the milestone, throughout the month, the Foundation joined by Safaricom staff will distribute Mama Packs in select hospitals across the country to support maternal and newborn care, and share food hampers with children’s homes.

The Foundation will also go across all 47 counties to engage and connect with communities and its stakeholders with different activities lined up, including medical camps, fistula camps, launch of projects and programmes, and mentorship of young people in different areas.

“As we celebrate 20 years of transforming lives, we have learned a lot and developed key insights into how we approach philanthropy. One key strategy that has defined our interventions is partnerships with experts in the fields we seek to create impact, and with the communities we aim to transform. As we look to the future and implement our 2023-2026 strategy, partnerships will remain important in our work as a Foundation,” said Joseph Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation.

Some of the new interventions set to be launched under the Foundation’s 2023-2026 strategy include digitizing teachers’ training colleges under the education pillar, revamping its maternal health programme to become a comprehensive Reproductive, Maternal, Neo-Natal, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) initiative, and expansion of its Economic Empowerment Programme to include Agribusiness, Ecoprenuership and Enterprise Development.

KeNHA Sensitizes County Governments On Axle Load Limits

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has started sensitizing county governments on axle load limits.

Speaking to drivers at Juja weighbridge station situated along the Namanga corridor, Engineer Kennedy Ndugire said that the law requires vehicles of over 3, 500Kgs and above to go through the weighbridge for weighing.

Eng. Ndugire noted that there are no vehicles that are excepted from axle load laws adding that all vehicles whether government or privately owned are supposed to go for axle load limit checks.

“You need to comply with the law, you need to use the dedicated lane for use by drivers, and the measures which authority has put in place to ensure that there is seamless and very fast weighing of this vehicles and screening at the weighbridges,” he said.

Adding; “Currently, there are no elements of traffic snarl-ups which used to be there initially. This is through the technology that has been brought by the authority of screening vehicles at high speed through the introduction of the High-Speed Weighing in motion system.”

According to Eng. Ndugire, they also demonstrated the method to the drivers which they appreciated so much.

Wilson Mburu Kangethe, Acting Chief Executive Member of Roads in Kiambu County, said that there was a need for the drivers to be sensitized about the axle load limits.

“We came with our drivers who were charged so that they can be taught why they should weigh the vehicles. The axle loads limits are not for KeNHA people neither for the county people but for the ‘Wanjiku’ and the public,” he said.

According to Edwin Njoroge, Acting Chief Officer of Roads in Kiambu County, the drivers who participated in the programme learned various aspects of how they need to observe the loading capacity, weights and penalties attributed to non-observance of the set requirements.

“The drivers have committed to make sure that they will pass through the designated weighing bridges to ensure their vehicles are weighed,” he said.

West Ham Sign Ward-Prowse From Southampton

West Ham United have signed midfielder James Ward-Prowse from Southampton for a fee thought to be in the region of £30m.

The 28-year-old, who had three years left on his contract, has joined the Hammers after 20 years at Saints.

West Ham are long-term admirers of Ward-Prowse having previously had a number of bids rejected for the Southampton captain this summer.

Flynn Downes, who played under Martin at Swansea City, is also expected to come the other direction on loan.

Saints had previously rejected bids of similar total value from West Ham but this deal is likely to include a more favourable structure with increased up-front payments.

Having joined as an eight-year-old, Ward-Prowse rose through the club’s youth ranks to make his senior debut during the 2011-12 season.

He has since made 410 appearances for the St Mary’s side, scoring 55 goals and making 54 assists – including setting up Che Adams’ winner on the opening day of this season against Sheffield Wednesday.

Speaking last week before the move was complete, Southampton boss Russell Martin revealed that it’s been a tough decision for Ward-Prowse to leave the club.

He said: “Having only worked with him for six weeks, I’ve been immensely impressed with him as a person and a character – as a player goes without saying.

“We had a really good chat on Wednesday, he’s really emotional about leaving this club and it shows he cares and how difficult it will be for him if it all goes through.

“I would have liked it to end in a different way than the club being in the Championship. He has obviously been torn between wanting to be here to help get the club back to the Premier League.”

Militao To Undergo Knee Surgery After ACL Tear

Eder Militao became the second Real Madrid player to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury this week, after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and the LaLiga club said on Sunday that the defender would require surgery.

Militao was injured when he hyperextended his knee early in the second half of Real’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday in their LaLiga opener. The 25-year-old defender was in tears as he was helped off the pitch.

“After the tests carried out on our player Eder Militao, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days,” the club said.

Militao could be sidelined for several months, just like Courtois who also required surgery after tearing the ACL in his left knee during a training session on Thursday.

Militao’s injury leaves only three fit centre backs for Real as the season gets underway – Nacho, Antonio Ruediger and David Alaba.
