Chelsea Agree British Record £115Mn Fee For Caicedo: Reports

Chelsea have agreed a British record transfer fee of £115 million ($146 million, 133 million euros) for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, according to media reports on Monday.

The 21-year-old Ecuador international had also been a target for Premier League rivals Liverpool, who on Friday agreed a reported record £110 million fee with Brighton.

But it became clear over the weekend that Caicedo preferred a move to Chelsea and will join the west London club on an eight-year contract, according to the reports.

Chelsea, who drew 1-1 with Liverpool in their Premier League opener on Sunday, hope Caicedo will be available for next weekend’s trip to West Ham United.

He could line up in Mauricio Pochettino’s team alongside Enzo Fernandez, who cost what was then a British record £107 million when he joined from Benfica earlier this year.

Caicedo was left out of Brighton’s squad for their season-opening 4-1 win at home to Luton Town on Saturday.

Maguire Must Fight For Place Or Leave Man Utd – Ten Hag

Harry Maguire should leave Manchester United if he is not confident enough to fight for his place, manager Erik ten Hag said, amid reports that the defender is on the verge of completing a transfer to West Ham United.

Ten Hag stripped Maguire of the captaincy last month after the 30-year-old made only eight Premier League starts last season, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof preferred in central defence.

British media reported that West Ham had agreed a deal worth 30 million pounds ($38.01 million) for Maguire, who became the world’s most expensive defender when United signed him from Leicester City for 80 million pounds in 2019.

“He has to fight for his place and he has the abilities to be a top-class centre back,” Ten Hag told reporters. “He is the best for England and I assume he will be best for us, but he has to prove it.

“When he is not confident enough to go in and fight, then he has to go. He has to make a decision. But I am happy with him … You need high-level players who are maybe not starting, but that can change.”

United host Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Premier League opener later on Monday.

Inside Gachagua-Talai Elders Talks For Land Resettlement

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised to intervening in different Talai Community concerns that have existed since pre-colonial times.

The minority community has been fighting for restitution for a colonial-era land grab, accusing the British of collective punishment and forcibly evicting them from their land, which was later turned into profitable tea fields.

After a 5-hour closed-door discussion with four Talai Clans on Sunday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua promised that the land and settlement issue would be handled shortly.

“We will assist in resolving the land dispute so that the men who fought for Kenya’s independence can be proud of their contribution,” he said.

“The Talai Community occupies a special place in our country because of the role it played in the resistance against the brutal colonial regime.”

“The legendary Orkoiyot Koitalel arap Samoei hailed from the community, his bravery and courage then inspiring other resistance movements across the country.”

Gachagua, who was accompanied by other politicians, including Nandi Governor Stephen Arap Sang, stated that they had also resorted to having the 15-kilometer Chepkober-Talai-Kaiboi route tarmacked. This would improve transport and mobility in the Nandi Central, Chesumei, Nandi North, and Turbo Sub-Counties.

Gachagua committed to develop Kapsisiywa Dispensary to a Health Centre and to ensure the completion of the Kombe Water Project.

Ten Killed As Nigerian Mosque Collapses During Prayers

A mosque in the Nigerian city of Zaria collapsed during prayers, killing at least 10 people, officials say.

Hundreds of worshippers were in the building at the time on Friday.

An investigation is under way to ascertain the cause of the collapse. The emir of the area told local media a crack had been discovered in one of the walls on Thursday.

The mosque is thought to be more than a century old. Nigeria has a long history of buildings collapsing.

“Four bodies were found initially,” a council spokesman Abdullahi Kwarbai told Reuters news agency.

“Then three others were found after the rescue team searched the collapsed mosque,” Mr Kwarbai added.

A team of engineers had been organised to fix the crack in the building, the Emir, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, told Punch News.

Post Kane-Tottenham Draws 2-2 With Brentford

Tottenham began life without Harry Kane with an entertaining 2-2 draw at Brentford on Sunday to start Ange Postecoglou’s reign in charge.

Cristian Romero headed Spurs in front early on, but the Bees bounced back to lead through Bryan Mbeumo’s penalty and Yoane Wissa.

Emerson Royal’s strike leveled the scores again before half-time and both sides had to settle for a point to begin the Premier League season.

Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich on Saturday had overshadowed the build-up to Postecoglou’s first competitive game as Spurs manager.

The Australian’s daring, front-foot approach that has won league titles in his homeland, Japan, and, most recently, in Scotland with Celtic was already in evidence.

However, so were a series of defensive deficiencies that Brentford could have made more of. For the second time in two days, the start to a Premier League game was delayed.

After Arsenal’s problems with an e-ticketing system ahead of their game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, this time the delay was caused by no running water at the GTech Community Stadium.

1-1: Pochettino’s Chelsea Draws With Liverpool On First Day In Office

New Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino saw the team he rebuilt in the close season fight back to draw 1-1 at home to Liverpool in their Premier League opener on Sunday as debutant defender Axel Disasi cancelled out Luis Diaz’s strike.

In a meeting of two of last season’s heavyweight flops, Diaz threatened to ruin Pochettino’s first competitive match in charge of the Blues when the Colombian stretched out a boot to turn in a defence-splitting pass by Mohamed Salah in the 18th minute as the visitors attacked with lightening speed.

Liverpool thought they had doubled their lead just over 10 minutes later but Salah was judged to have been offside before he put the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, one of four debutants in Chelsea’s starting lineup.

The hosts weathered the storm and equalised in the 37th when Liverpool failed to clear a corner and France international Disasi – signed this month from AS Monaco – swept the ball home from close range after a looping Ben Chilwell header.

Two minutes later Chilwell rounded goalkeeper Alison Becker to put ball in the net but VAR ruled he was offside.

Chelsea dominated possession after the break but failed to get a second goal. A deflected shot by substitute Darwin Nunez then almost won it for Liverpool in the dying moments.

Delaware Senator Chris Coons: The US Hand In Kenya’s Handshakes

Raila Odinga, then the leader of the National Super Alliance (Nasa), visited the United States a month after the October 2017 repeat presidential election chaos.

Among those he met was Congressman Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, who called for dialogue between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mr Odinga to end the election impasse.

Three months later, on March 9, 2018, President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga exchanged a surprise handshake on the steps of the President’s office in Nairobi, bringing an end to an era marked by political animosity and unrest.

Senator Coons arrived in Kenya in March 2023, just a day before Azimio’s second phase of public unrest began.

After meeting with President Ruto, DP Rigathi Gachagua, and Raila Odinga, Ruto invited Raila to Bipartisan talks, effectively ending Maandamano.

However, the talks collapsed, and Coons has returned to the country, just in time for the Bomas Bilateral talks in Nairobi on Monday, August 14th.

According to official figures, at least 20 people have died in the opposition-led protests, though rights activists believe the toll is much much higher.

The Kenya Kwanza coalition listed the re-constitution of the IEBC, the implementation of the two-thirds gender rule in parliament, the inclusion of the CDF in the Constitution, the establishment of the office of the leader of the opposition, and the legalization of the office of the prime cabinet secretary as issues to be discussed.

The Azimio coalition, on the other hand, kept its first agenda in the talks as cost of living reduction, followed by audit of the 2022 elections, bipartisan reconstitution of the IEBC, inclusion in national affairs, and respect for political parties.

The Azimio dialogue team is led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who will be joined by his DAP-Kenya counterpart Eugine Wamalwa, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Nyamira Senator Okongo Omogeni, and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa will lead the Kenya Kwanza delegation, which will also include Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, EALA MP Hassan Omar, and Bungoma Woman Rep Catherine Wambilianga.

Senator Coons, a lawyer by profession, has been the Senator of Delaware since 2010. He is a close personal friend of US President Joe Biden, and they both hail from Delaware.

Coons has a reputation for finding bipartisan solutions to many issues confronting Delawareans and others.

Will he broker another Handshake Deal for Kenya?

Report: Kenyan Men Surpass Women in HIV Prevalence for First Time

A recent report on HIV in Kenya revealed a new concerning trend among men.

According to an AIDs Healthcare Foundation (AHF) study, the positivity rate in men increased to 3.1% in 2022, up from around 2.5% in 2021.

This is the first time since 2015 that men’s positivity has exceeded that of women, which was 2.7% in 2022, according to the report.

The AHF Country Programme Director, Dr Samuel Kinyanjui, attributed the trend to’mubaba’ culture (cross-generational relationships) and men having relationships with both men and women.

“Men are now having relations with other men. Men engaging with men has been identified as a very risky behaviour…it is very easy to contract HIV. The other trend we are seeing is the mubaba culture. A man is sponsoring a lady in life and because he believes or was told he is the only one, he does not use protection…he doesn’t know several other men are paying rent for the same lady and they have also been informed they are the only ones,” Kinyanjui commented during the release of the report.

The doctor also stated that men have more partners than women, which he believes is contributing to the increase in positivity.

The multiple partner factor was consistent with the findings of the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022, which revealed that Kenyan men have an average of seven partners.

Kinyanjui, on the other hand, was emphatic that women continue to bear the heaviest burden of the disease, revealing that of the 96,601 AHF patients, 65,336 were women, while 31,265 were men.

“We understand that men are not good at getting tested. Some wait until the disease has taken a terrible toll before showing up for treatment. This should stop,” he added.

According to Janet Musimbi, Programme Officer- Adolescent and Youth (National Syndemic Diseases Control Council), HIV prevalence is increasing in previously low-burden counties.

According to her, the counties with the highest prevalence are Homa Bay (15.2%), Kisumu (14.5%), Siaya (13.2%), Migori (9.7%), Busia (5%), Mombasa (4.8%), Kisii (4.4%), Samburu (4.3), Vihiga (4.2%), and Uasin Gishu (3.7%).

In terms of teen pregnancies, she identified Meru as the county with the highest burden, noting that the county led by Governor Kawera Mwangaza had the highest number recorded between January and May 2023.

It was followed by Narok, Tana River, Samburu, West Pokot, Homa Bay and Kisii.

“About 6% of pregnancies occurred among girls aged 10-14 between 2016-2022. Between Jan- May 2023, Meru County had the highest proportion of adolescent pregnancies (10-19) in the country at 26%. Sexual and Age-related heterogeneity – young women aged 15-24 years are approximately four times more likely to become infected with HIV than young men,” she said.

President Ruto Vows Sustained Savings Reforms To End Reliance On Foreign Loans

President William Ruto has said the Government is keen on increasing the country’s savings.

The Head of State said the move would wean the country off foreign borrowing, which had crippled the economy.

He noted that the country had only saved Sh350 billion in the last 60 years in the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

He, however, pointed out that the Government has reversed the trend and is on course to doubling NSSF savings within four years.

“In a short while, we will not need to borrow from elsewhere to grow our economy.”

He made the remarks on Sunday during a church service at the Faith Evangelistic Ministry in Karen, Nairobi County.

First Lady Rachel Ruto, Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, Governors Anne Waiguru and Susan Kihika were present.

President Ruto said the Government’s interventions aimed at reducing the cost of living were bearing fruits.

He said the subsidised fertiliser programme has helped the country to boost food production.

“Our projection this year is that we are going to increase our maize production from 44 million bags to 61 million bags,” he said.

The President said the Government is keen on increasing the acreage of land under agriculture through irrigation.

He added that the country will no longer spend Sh500 billion every year to import food.

“We should not be importing food; we should be producing more and even export the surplus,” he said.

He said the Government has put in place deliberate measures to tame unemployment.

“The housing project is more about jobs than houses,” he said.
