Miss Universe Cuts Ties With Indonesia Organiser Accused Of Sexual Harassment

The Miss Universe Organization said it was cutting ties with its Indonesian franchisee and cancelling this year’s Malaysia pageant after contestants accused local organisers of sexual harassment.

The U.S.-based organisation said in an emailed statement late on Saturday it had decided to sever its contract with PT Capella Swastika Karya and its national director Poppy Capella, who also holds the license for Miss Universe Malaysia.

Six Miss Universe Indonesia contestants filed complaints with police accusing organisers of sexual harassment, saying they were subjected to topless “body checks”, their lawyer said on Tuesday.

“It has become clear that this franchise has not lived up to our brand standards, ethics, or expectations as outlined in our franchise handbook and code of conduct,” the Miss Universe Organization said, adding that providing a safe place for women was its utmost priority.

Jakarta police did not respond to a request for comment on Sunday. Spokesperson Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said on Tuesday the report would be investigated.

Capella said in a statement on Instagram she does not condone any form of sexual harassment.

“I emphasise that I, as the national director and license owner for Miss Universe Indonesia, was not involved at all and have never known, ordered, requested or allowed anyone who plays a role and participated in the process of organising Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 to commit sexual harassment through body checking as reported,” she said.

The Jakarta contest was held to select Indonesia’s entry for the annual Miss Universe competition, to be held in El Salvador late this year.

The Miss Universe Organization said it was evaluating its policies and procedures to avoid similar occurrence in the future, adding that there are no measurement or body dimensions requirement to join their pageant worldwide.

Russian Forces Kill Seven Including Baby In Southern Ukraine

Seven people including a baby girl, her 12-year-old brother and their parents were killed on Sunday by Russian shelling in southern Ukraine, officials said.

The three adults and two children were killed in the village of Shyroka Balka, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said on messaging app Telegram, releasing pictures showing the aftermath of the shelling attack.

One photo showed a column of black smoke rising above a house.

“A husband, wife and their 23-day-old daughter were killed by enemy artillery fire,” Klymenko wrote.

The couple’s 12-year-old son was hospitalised in critical condition and later died, Klymenko said in a separate statement.

In the village of Stanislav two men aged 57 and 71 were killed, officials said, adding that a woman was wounded.

“Terrorists must be stopped. They must be stopped by force,” said Klymenko.

Kherson was one of four regions in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed to have annexed last year.

Late last year, Russian troops withdrew from the city of Kherson but Moscow has continued to target settlements in the region.

Son Named Spurs Captain After Kane Departure

Son Heung-min was named Tottenham’s new captain on Saturday on the day the club’s all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been Spurs skipper since 2015, but the Frenchman’s future at the club is in doubt.

Kane was expected to take over had he remained in north London rather than moving to Germany in pursuit of the first silverware of his career.

New signing James Maddison and Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero have been named vice-captains.

“It’s such a big honour to captain this huge club,” said Son, who has scored 145 goals since joining the club in 2015.

“It was a big surprise and a very proud moment. I’ve already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch.

“It’s a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou hailed Son’s leadership qualities, having had experience as captain of South Korea.

“Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain.

“Everyone knows he is a world class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room.

“He transcends groups within the squad. That’s not just because he’s popular – it’s because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea.”

Spurs begin life without Kane when they travel to Brentford on Sunday for their opening game of the Premier League season.

Mbappe Reinstated By PSG To First Team After Being Sidelined

French superstar Kylian Mbappe was reinstated in Paris Saint-Germain’s first team on Sunday after being sidelined for several weeks amid an ongoing contract dispute.

PSG opened its Ligue 1 title defence with a goalless draw at home against Lorient on Saturday as the team’s prize asset watched from the stands.

“After very constructive and positive discussions between Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappe before the PSG-Lorient match, the player was reinstated in the first training team this morning,” PSG said in a statement.

Kylian Mbappe has decided to stay at PSG and will run out his contract: Reports

After a summer of flux at the Parc des Princes filled with new arrivals and Lionel Messi’s departure, it is the Mbappe stand-off that continues to dominate the headlines.

The France captain has refused to sign an extension to his PSG deal, meaning he can leave for free next year, with Real Madrid long seen as his preferred destination.

PSG want to sell him now and bring in a significant transfer fee for a player who cost 180 million euros ($198 million) from Monaco in 2017.

Mbappe, Neymar and Verratti left out of PSG squad for season opener

New coach Luis Enrique on Friday said he hoped a solution could be found, but Mbappe has not been allowed train with the first team and was left out of the squad to face Lorient.

Instead, he sat alongside fellow 2018 World Cup winner Ousmane Dembele, who completed his transfer from Barcelona earlier in the day, as Luis Enrique handed debuts to six players.

Despite his sidelining Mbappe was one of the first to welcome Dembele.

“Welcome home my brother, so happy to see you here, the adventure begins,” Mbappe posted on social media.

The two friends then appeared smiling together in the stands while Brazilian star Neymar, whose future is also in doubt, was absent because of a “viral syndrome”.

With his reinstatement, Mbappe has partly won his case, even if it is too early to know if it will lead to the contract extension the club are demanding.

Saturday’s offensive weaknesses against Lorient may have prompted PSG to soften their attitude towards the top scorer in the club’s history.

The 24-year-old forward is now available for the trip to Toulouse on August 19, even if he has played just once, a friendly against Le Havre, in the past two months.

This Pill Could Slow Down STIs If Taken Within 72 Hours After Sex

As rates of sexually transmitted infections continue to skyrocket across the United States, a growing number of physicians are prescribing a commonly used antibiotic as a way to prevent chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis infections in gay and bisexual men and transgender women.

Doxycycline is a class of medications traditionally used to treat bacterial STIs after someone has been infected. Yet recent research suggests that one 200mg dose of the drug can be effective in preventing such infections among men who have sex with men if taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

This approach, called doxyPEP, has garnered so much attention that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to post draft guidance for public comment in the next several weeks on how health care workers may deploy the preventative treatment, such as how many pills should go into a prescription or which people could benefit most from the drug.

“The number of syphilis cases in the United States are at their highest level in over 50 years. The nation needs new tools to prevent STIs,” Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said in an email.

“CDC is working on formal clinical guidelines on the use of doxycycline as STI PEP and will be requesting public comment on the agency’s draft recommendations,” he wrote. “This step allows us to gather important input before finalizing guidance, and gives clinical providers, people affected by STIs, and partner organizations the opportunity to weigh in before our guidance is finalized.”

However, some local health departments already have their own recommendations for the use of doxyPEP to prevent STIs.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health released doxyPEP guidance in October. In April, the California Department of Public Health released similar guidance for health care providers recommending doxyPEP to men who have sex with men or transgender women who have had at least one bacterial STI in the past 12 months.

“We have high rates of sexually transmitted infections in San Francisco, and we consider this to be one of our urgent public health issues that we face as a city. And so, we felt like there was an imperative to move forward with providing a framework for the safe and equitable use of this innovative new tool for sexual health,” said Dr. Stephanie Cohen, director of the HIV/STI Prevention Section in the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Disease Prevention and Control branch.

“We knew that it would take the CDC some time to develop and release consensus guidelines. But we also knew that we had people in our community and providers who were prescribing doxyPEP, so we didn’t feel that we could wait,” she said. “We’re now not the only health department who has released guidelines. A growing number of health departments throughout the country are putting out guidelines as they also see the need for this in their community.”

Cohen noted that Seattle and King County in Washington state have also released guidelines on the use of doxyPEP to prevent bacterial STIs in men and transgender people who have sex with men.

But not all of these local and state guidelines are aligned, she said, and there are some “subtle differences” emerging, especially when it comes to who is recommended to use doxyPEP. The hope is that any forthcoming CDC guidance can help settle those differences and clarify which people may be eligible.

“Right now, clinicians are learning from each other in real time how to provide doxycycline as STI PEP,” David C. Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, said in an email. He added that any guidance from the CDC will help “fill gaps,” provide direction to clinics and offer a framework for using doxyPEP for STI prevention.

“An increasing number of doctors are providing their patients with doxycycline as STI PEP, including many of the nation’s most renowned STI clinics. Doxycycline is a safe, inexpensive, well-understood drug, and the evidence it works as PEP for men and transgender women is well-documented and consistent across research,” Harvey wrote. “Doctors recognize the urgency of the STI epidemic, which is why so many clinics are moving forward and so many bigger agencies are pressing CDC to provide them with the information they need to roll it out more broadly.”

‘It’s a way to prevent a full-blown infection’

DoxyPEP was found to be about 65% effective at reducing the incidence of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis in a recent study.

About 500 men who have sex with men and transgender women were enrolled in the study from August 2020 through May 2022. The participants — who all had a history of STIs in the past year — were randomly assigned to receive either doxyPEP or their usual standard of care without doxyPEP. The study, published in April in the New England Journal of Medicine, was conducted at clinics in San Francisco and Seattle.

“This is not a new concept, the concept of post-exposure prophylaxis. We use it for a number of other infectious diseases like Lyme disease. If someone’s been bitten by a tick and there’s concern that they might have been exposed to Lyme disease, they can be given a single dose of doxycycline,” said Dr. Annie Luetkemeyer, professor of infectious diseases at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital at UCSF and co-principal investigator of the study.

“It’s a way to prevent a full-blown infection,” she said. “We know that some populations of men who have sex with men are really disproportionately impacted by sexually transmitted infections.”

Among the study participants without HIV, a bacterial STI was diagnosed in about 10.7% of quarterly visits to clinics in the doxyPEP group, compared with 31.9% of visits in the standard care group.

Among the participants living with HIV, a bacterial STI was diagnosed in about 11.8% of quarterly visits to clinics in the doxyPEP group, compared with 30.5% of visits in the standard care group.

At the end of the study, the researchers found that every quarter — or about every three months — the combined incidence of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis was lower by two-thirds among those who took doxyPEP within 72 hours after having sex without a condom than in those with standard care.

“There was a large reduction in chlamydia and syphilis. We weren’t sure if it was going to work against gonorrhea,” Luetkemeyer said. “But we saw about a 55% reduction in gonorrhea.”

However, the researchers also found a slight increase in the number of gonorrhea infections with doxycycline-class resistance in the doxyPEP group compared with the standard-care group in the study. This suggests that doxyPEP may offer less protection against existing gonorrhea strains that have developed resistance to doxycycline.

Still, the number of gonorrhea cases that were tested for resistance was low, and population-based evaluations of people taking doxyPEP will be needed to understand the potential impact of doxycycline use on gonorrhea antibiotic resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance happens when germs, such as bacteria and fungi, develop the ability to defeat the medications that have been engineered to destroy them. Bacteria can sometimes develop this ability when certain antibiotics are being overused.

There are some remaining questions about long-term effects on antimicrobial resistance in particular, said Dr. Connie Celum, professor of global health and medicine at the University of Washington and co-principal investigator of the doxyPEP study.

“The challenge is, we don’t have a great outpatient antibiotic resistance surveillance system. Most of what we know about antibiotic resistance system is from hospitalized patients,” she said. “Now, we’re talking about doing doxyPEP in outpatient settings. So we’re trying to think about how to nest in antibiotic resistance surveillance in selected implementation projects to give us more information on antimicrobial resistance.”

As doxycycline is an antibiotic, doxyPEP doesn’t prevent viral sexually transmitted infections such as mpox, herpes or HIV. There also hasn’t been much research on the medication as post-exposure prophylaxis in cisgender women.

In one study, more than 400 women in Kenya were separated into two groups: One group was given doxyPEP to take after having sex, and the other group wasn’t. The researchers — from Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute, the University of Washington and Kenya Medical Research Institute — found that there was not much of a difference in the incidence of bacterial STIs between the two groups.

“It was a disappointment to see that doxycycline PEP was not protective for cisgender women in the dPEP Kenya Study. We now have data to help understand these results a bit more,” Dr. Jenell Stewart, project director for the DoxyPEP Kenya study and infectious disease physician at Hennepin Healthcare and the University of Minnesota, said in an email.

That new data reveals that there were low rates of women in the study actually taking doxycycline, Stewart said, as well as a high prevalence of a gonorrhea strain that is known to be resistant to the medication. She added that it remains unclear why some of the study participants were not taking their doxyPEP pills, which probably skewed the study findings.

“Additional studies are needed among cisgender women, transgender men, and nonbinary people with vaginas to provide additional data on the potential of doxycycline PEP to be an effective preventive tool regardless of sex and gender,” Stewart wrote.

“Condoms work very well at preventing STIs, but it’s clear from rising rates of STIs around the world that condoms don’t fit into everyone’s sex life, so we need additional options for preventing infections and reducing the spread of STIs,” she said. “I don’t think everyone needs to use doxycycline PEP, but this is a potentially important tool, especially for people who are not in monogamous sexual relationships.

US sees surging STI rates

When used for STI prevention, doxyPEP is an off-label prescription, since the US Food and Drug Administration has not officially approved it for STI post-exposure prophylaxis and the CDC has yet to release its final guidance.

Along with STI clinics providing doxycycline as a post-exposure prophylaxis medication, people can order it online from some providers, such as the sexual health care company Wisp.

Even though most of the studies on doxyPEP have been in men, Wisp offers doxyPEP for everyone, including women, Dr. Suneer Chander, a provider at Wisp, said in an email, adding that that decision is due to the ongoing rise in STIs among both men and women in the United States.

“Considering the potential impact of this treatment and the low risk associated with a single dose of doxycycline, Wisp believes it’s important for all our patients, especially those with limited access to care, to have access to this preventative treatment,” Chander wrote.

“Some people may be worried about antibiotic resistance if they take doxyPEP without actually having been exposed to a bacterial STI. Currently, clinical trials have not proven that doxyPEP will increase antibiotic resistance,” Chander said in part. “Drug resistance when taking doxyPEP is currently being studied in people using this treatment for STI prevention. Still, given the increase in STI cases in the US over the past few years, this treatment is vital in preventing STI spread.”

Rates of sexually transmitted infections have been rising across the United States, with more than 2.5 million cases reported in 2021, a jump of 7% in one year, according to data released in April by the CDC.

Chlamydia accounted for more than half of those cases, with rates increasing about 4% in 2021. Cases of gonorrhea rose nearly 5%. Cases of syphilis surged 32% in one year, including an alarming rise in infections passed from pregnant mothers to babies developing in the womb. In 2021, congenital syphilis caused 220 stillbirths and infant deaths.

The CDC’s Mermin said that publishing guidance on doxyPEP is not the end of the agency’s efforts to reduce rates of STIs across the country.

“To decrease incidence of STIs and reduce health disparities, we will need to remove barriers to STI services and prioritize equitable access to this new prevention strategy so it can reach the people who need it most,” he wrote in his email.

“There are still many STI prevention and treatment gaps left to fill. Continued research and investment are needed to discover new interventions and fully implement testing, prevention, and treatment solutions for everyone impacted by STIs,” he said. “In STI prevention, we’ve been relying on tools that are decades, sometimes centuries old. This new intervention is not enough, but it brings hope that we can finally turn the STI epidemic around.”

Why Uhuru’s Administration Funded Wajackoyah Manifesto Launch

Funding George Wajackoya was one of the strategies the Uhuru Kenyatta government used to hinder William Ruto’s bid for the presidency.

Mutahi Ngunyi, the former technical advisor to ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta, has unveiled the strategies employed by a faction within the previous administration to hinder William Ruto’s bid for the presidency.

Ngunyi revealed that during this time, Uhuru had already thrown his support behind opposition leader Raila Odinga and was cognizant of efforts to impede Ruto’s progress in garnering public support for the upcoming 2022 elections.

Ngunyi highlighted several alleged tactics that were used. One of these involved funding the launch of George Wajackoya’s presidential campaign manifesto.

The timing of Wajackoya’s launch was intentionally coordinated to clash with the launch of Kenya Kwanza’s manifesto, a move aimed at disrupting Ruto’s event.

Ngunyi explained, “I received information from Uhuru Kenyatta’s associates, and we financially backed Wajackoya’s launch. We strategically scheduled it to coincide with Ruto’s launch… Our rationale was that Ruto had a quick temper, and we wanted to provoke him to create a situation where the media would split their screens between the two events.”

Detailing the political discord between Uhuru and Ruto, Ngunyi recounted that his bank accounts were frozen after he confronted Uhuru about supporting Ruto and later met with Ruto at his residence in Karen.

“Uhuru’s argument was that this might have adverse repercussions for some of us. I countered that he wouldn’t be running for president anyway, so what’s the harm in supporting it? Let’s at least promote his deputy’s chances of taking office,” Ngunyi explained.

“However, my actions led to a request for me to cease, and at one point, my bank accounts were frozen on two occasions.”

This occurred against the backdrop of Ngunyi’s switch to President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp. He stated that he had revised his stance on the president.

“Public announcement: I have shifted my allegiance to William Ruto. I had misjudged him through the ‘dynasty’ lens. But if circumstances change, opinions must change. Only a fool remains obstinate. I initiated Project #HustlerNation, and now I must see it through. Any questions? #RutosMountainPlan,” Ngunyi conveyed via the X social media platform.

Ngunyi clarified that his defection shouldn’t be misconstrued as aligning with the Kenya Kwanza government; rather, he supports the principles of the “Hustler Nation” ideology.

“After KK assumed power, it seems they abandoned the core ideology and ethos of the Hustler Nation movement that propelled them into authority. My objective is to rekindle it,” Ngunyi stated.

“I’m not a politician but a political scholar. I’m a thinker, not an activist. Thus, I’ve embraced the essence of the Hustler Nation idea, especially as I was instrumental in its inception.”

Detained Niger President Seen By Doctor: Entourage

Niger’s detained president was seen by his doctor on Saturday, his entourage said amid mounting concern for his condition, while Nigerian religious leaders met the officers who seized power last month to try to defuse the crisis.

The Muslim leaders visited the capital Niamey with the blessing of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, head of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS, a source close to the delegation told AFP.

ECOWAS has approved the deployment of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger as soon as possible, but scrapped a Saturday crisis meeting on the coup that deposed Mohamed Bazoum.

Bazoum, 63, was toppled on July 26 by his presidential guard, which has since held him and his family at his official Niamey residence.

The European Union, the African Union and the United Nations joined others in sounding the alarm for Bazoum on Friday after reports described worsening detention conditions.

Bazoum “had a visit by his doctor today”, a member of his entourage told AFP, adding the physician had also brought food for Bazoum, his wife and son.

“He’s fine, given the situation,” the source added.

Human Rights Watch said it had spoken with Bazoum earlier this week. The ousted leader had described the treatment of himself, his wife and their unwell 20-year-old son as “inhuman and cruel”, HRW said.

“My son is sick, has a serious heart condition, and needs to see a doctor,” the group quoted him as saying. “They’ve refused to let him get medical treatment.”

UN rights chief Volker Turk on Friday said Bazoum’s reported detention conditions “could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of international human rights law”.

Top US diplomat Antony Blinken said he was “dismayed” by the military’s refusal to release Bazoum’s family as a “demonstration of goodwill”.

– Muslim leaders’ visit –

The delegation of Nigerian religious leaders was received by newly appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine in Niamey, and then strongman General Abdourahamane Tiani, according to Niger’s national television.

The group was headed by Sheikh Bala Lau, leader of the Izala Salafist movement in Nigeria, Niger’s ANP press agency reported.

A source close to the delegation told AFP they had left on the mandate of Tinubu “to douse tension created by the prospect of military intervention by ECOWAS”.

“The clerics are in Niamey to explain to the junta leaders that Nigeria is not fighting Niger and that the decisions taken on Niger are not Nigeria’s but those of ECOWAS as a regional bloc,” the source added.

Lau had earlier in the week led a delegation of clerics who met with Tinubu in Nigeria’s capital Abuja where the mission was discussed, the source said.

On Friday, West African leaders suspended the crisis meeting that had been set for Saturday in Ghana’s capital Accra. Chiefs of staff from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) cited “technical reasons”.

Sources said the meeting was originally set up to inform the organisation’s leaders about “the best options” for activating and deploying the standby force.

“The military option seriously envisaged by ECOWAS is not a war against Niger and its people but a police operation against hostage takers and their accomplices,” Hassoumi Massaoudou, foreign minister in the ousted civilian government, said Saturday.

ECOWAS is determined to stop the sixth military takeover in the region in just three years.

It has severed financial transactions and electricity supplies and closed borders with landlocked Niger, blocking much-needed imports to one of the world’s poorest countries.

ECOWAS had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to the coup leaders to reinstate Bazoum, but the generals defied the deadline, which expired on Sunday.

– ‘Down with ECOWAS’ –

Thousands of coup supporters rallied in Niamey on Friday to protest against the ECOWAS plan to send troops.

Protesters gathered near a French military base on the outskirts of Niamey shouting “Down with France, down with ECOWAS”.

Niger’s new leaders have accused former colonial power France, a close Bazoum ally, of being behind the hardline ECOWAS stance.

France has around 1,500 troops in Niger as part of a force battling an eight-year jihadist insurgency.

It is facing growing hostility across the Sahel, withdrawing its anti-jihadist forces from neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso last year after falling out with military governments that ousted elected leaders.

Morocco MP And Journalist Sentenced Over World Cup Scam

A Moroccan parliamentarian and a journalist have been sentenced for embezzlement over tickets earmarked for the country’s supporters in last year’s World Cup in Qatar, a judicial source said Saturday.

Mohamed El Hidaoui, a member of parliament and football club owner, was sentenced to 18 months in jail by a Casablanca court, his lawyer Mohamed Ben Malek told AFP.

Hidaoui, a member of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch’s National Rally of Independents party, is the president of the first division Olympique Club de Safi.

He has been in custody since July 26, and was also fined 2,000 dirhams (190 euros), said Ben Malek, who added that he intends to appeal the sentence.

“I continue to affirm the innocence of my client who has not committed any crime,” the lawyer said. “I do not know why he has been put on trial.”

Radio sports journalist Adil El Omari was sentenced in the same case to 10 months in jail and fined 1,000 dirhams (95 euros), Ben Malek said.

He has been released on bail.

Both men were accused of attempted fraud and reselling tickets illegally.

Many fans who had travelled to Doha to support the Atlas Lions last year found themselves deprived of free tickets promised to them by the Moroccan Football Federation.

The tickets were sold on the black market at four or five times their face value, according to accounts gathered at the time by AFP.

The authorities in Morocco pledged to punish those responsible for the scam, and Hidaoui and Omari were detained in May this year.

Indignation caused by the scandal was all the greater as Morocco reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and met France.

Kericho: 6 Govt Officials Face Sack Over Londiani Accident Millions

The Kericho County ad hock committee that was set up to investigate embezzlement of funds raised for Londiani accident victims has recommended the sacking of culprits.

The committee had 14 days to investigate the alleged misappropriation of Ksh14.5 million that was raised for victims of the Londiani Junction accident.

The selected committee presented its report before the Kericho county assembly on Friday, August 11, recommending the ouster of various county officials.

Moreover, the MCAs revealed that six county officials in different ministries were involved in embezzlement of funds meant to help the crash victims.

Six officers including two CECs and three chief officers were allegedly involved in the embezzlement.

According to the committee, the County secretary Wesley Bor was involved with allegations of violating the public finance act by forging minutes.

Furthermore, the lawmakers held that Health CEC Brenda Bii be removed from office for abuse of office by overseeing misappropriation of fundraiser funds.

At the same time, the legislators want Finance CEC Leornard Ngetich removed from office over allegations of abuse of office.

Others featuring on the list are County Chief Officer of Finance Gilbert Bii and the County Chief Officer for lands Betty Chebet.

”That all the money taken out of the county donation account be reimbursed and be paid to the victims of the Londiani accident as it was intended and that the county government of Kericho to meet all other expenses including medical bills for patients,” the committee report read.

According to the report, the officials allegedly forged minutes, permitted irregular funds withdrawal, and supervised misuse of funds thus violating section 138 of the public finance act.

Moreover, the report noted that only sixty thousand shillings was paid to the victims of the accident, raising fundamental questions about the rest of the money.

A probe into the misappropriation of the money raised for Londiani accident victims kicked off after Kericho Deputy Governor Fred Kirui claimed that some individuals had embezzled over Ksh13 million raised for the victims.

Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua led a fundraiser in Kericho county on July 4 where over Ksh14 million was raised towards Londiani Junction accident victims.
