Maui Fires: Hawaii Death Toll Hits 55, Recovery To Take Years

Maui’s wildfires have killed at least 53 people and turned the resort town of Lahaina into smoldering ruins that will take many years and billions of dollars to rebuild, Hawaiian officials said.

Gov. Josh Green said the inferno that reduced much of Lahaina to smoldering ruins was the worst natural disaster in the state’s history, making thousands of people homeless and leveling as many as 1,000 buildings.

“It’s going to take many years to rebuild Lahaina,” Green said told a news conference on Thursday, as officials began to map out a plan to shelter the newly displaced in hotels and tourist rental properties.

“It will be a new Lahaina that Maui builds in its own image with its own values,” Green said of the city that draws 2 million tourists each year, or about 80% of the island’s visitors.

The fast-moving inferno, which started on Tuesday, spread from the brush outside of town and ravaged the historic city of Lahaina that was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

It was one of three major wildfires on Maui that were fueled by dry conditions, a buildup of fuel and 100 kph gusts of wind.

Even as firefighters continue to put out smaller fires and search and rescue teams almost certainly have yet to recover all the dead, federal recovery dollars have started to flow along with an influx of supplies and equipment.

Among the incoming assistance were cadaver dogs from California and Washington that would aid search and rescue teams combing through the ruins, officials said.

“Understand this: Lahaina town is hallowed, sacred ground right now,” Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said, referring to remains that have yet to be recovered. “We have to get them out.”

Thousands of tourists and locals were evacuated from the western side of Maui, which has a year-round population of about 166,000, with some taking shelter on the island or on the neighboring island of Oahu. Tourists camped in the Kahului Airport, waiting for flights back home.

Green said the scope of the disaster would surpass that of 1960, one year after Hawaii became a U.S. state, when a tsunami killed 61 people on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Some people fled the flames by jumping into the Pacific Ocean.

Among them was Vixay Phonxaylinkham, a tourist from Fresno, California, who said he was trapped in a rental car with his wife and children as the fires approached, forcing the family to abandon the car and take refuge in the water.

“We floated around four hours,” Phonxaylinkham said from the airport while awaiting a flight off the island, describing how they held onto pieces of wood for floatation.

“It was a vacation that turned into a nightmare. I heard explosions everywhere, I heard screaming, and some people didn’t make it. I feel so sad,” he said.

Many more people suffered burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries.

“It was so hot all around me, I felt like my shirt was about to catch on fire,” said Nicoangelo Knickerbocker, a 21-year-old resident of Lahaina, said from one of the four emergency shelters opened on the island.

Knickerbocker heard cars and a gas station explode, and soon after fled the town with his father, bringing with them only the clothes they were wearing and the family dog.

“It sounded like a war was going on,” he said.

The fate of some of Lahaina’s cultural treasures remains unclear. The historic 18-meter-tall banyan tree marking the spot where Hawaiian King Kamehameha III’s 19th-century palace stood was still standing, though some of its boughs appeared charred, according to a witness.

Maui County said in a statement that the Lahaina fire was 80% contained, as firefighters secured the perimeter of the wild land areas that burned.

The Pulehu fire, about 30 km east of Lahaina, was 70% contained. There was no estimate for the Upcountry fire in the center of the eastern mass of the island, Maui County said.

Scenes of fiery devastation have become all too familiar elsewhere in the world this summer. Wildfires, often caused by record-setting heat, forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in Greece, Spain, Portugal and other parts of Europe. In western Canada, a series of unusually severe fires sent clouds of smoke over vast swaths of the U.S., polluting the air.

Human-caused climate change, driven by fossil fuel use, is increasing the frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events, scientists say, having long warned that countries must slash emissions to prevent climate catastrophe.

Jacob Zuma Quickly Released After Reporting To Prison

South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma reported back to prison on Friday only to be swiftly released, in the latest twist over the 81-year-old’s contempt of court sentence.

Zuma was ordered to report back to prison and arrived at 6:00 am (0400 GMT) at a detention facility in eastern town of Estcourt where was “admitted into the system”, the prison service said.

But he was let go in just over an hour as part of a “remission process” aiming to address overcrowding in prison, according to Correctional Services national commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale.

“Upon admission into the system he was subjected to administrative processes… He was then released,” Thobakgale told a press conference in Pretoria.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in June 2021 after refusing to testify before a panel probing financial corruption and cronyism under his presidency — but was freed on medical parole just two months into his term.

He started serving his term early in July 2021.

His jailing sparked protests that descended into riots and looting that left more than 350 dead in the worst violence to hit the country since the advent of democracy in South Africa.

The following month, he was admitted to hospital for an undisclosed condition before being granted medical parole.

In November last year an appeals court found the release was illegally granted and ordered Zuma back to the Estcourt Correctional Centre in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

South Africa’s prison service, which had granted Zuma’s conditional release, appealed the decision, but the bid was dismissed by the Constitutional Court last month.

Thobakgale said the ex-president was ordered to return to jail on Friday in compliance with the ruling.

But Zuma immediately benefited from a remission of non-violent offenders approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said.

More than 24,000 inmates, about two-thirds of them under correctional supervision and parole, are to be released under the process, said Lamola.

The move “will alleviate overcrowding” which “poses a direct threat to inmate health, security, and management, and it could lead to a surge in gangsterism,” the minister said.

Mzwanele Manyi, a spokesman for Zuma’s foundation said the ex-president was “at home” and consulting with his legal team.

Zuma served as president from 2009 to 2018 before being forced out over graft allegations.

Besides his 2021 contempt of court conviction he is facing separate charges of corruption in an arms procurement scandal dating to the late 1990s, when he was vice president.

Liverpool Agree British Record £111m Fee For Caicedo

Liverpool have agreed a British record transfer fee of £111m with Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

After Brighton rejected a succession of bids from Chelsea, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will now match that amount.

Brighton had set a fee in excess of £100m for Caicedo and had said they felt no-one would reach it.

However, Liverpool have now done that, which leaves the 21-year-old Ecuador international free to go for a medical.

Liverpool lost midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League last month but signed Caicedo’s Brighton team-mate Alexis Mac Allister in June for £35m.

The fee agreed for Caicedo exceeds the £107m Chelsea paid for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez earlier this year.

Caicedo joined Brighton from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle for £4m in February 2021,with a 20% sell-on clause included in the deal. He did not make his Premier League debut until April 2022.

He asked to leave Brighton in the January transfer window earlier this year. Arsenal then had multiple offers turned down for Caicedo before the player signed a new contract with the Seagulls until 2027 in March.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been looking at various options to rebuild his squad after they finished fifth in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League.

However, the price they are prepared to pay for Caicedo comes as a surprise, as in In April, the club said they would not make a move for England midfielder Jude Bellingham because of the money involved.

The 20-year-old later joined Real Madrid in a deal that could reach 133.9m euros (£115m).

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, 19, has also been on Klopp’s list of potential transfers, but the Reds have seen three bids rejected by the Saints, who reportedly value the Belgian at £50m.

While all the noise was around Chelsea’s efforts to sign Caicedo, it is understood Reds chief executive Billy Hogan worked quietly behind the scenes to get this deal in place.

Brighton had a figure they wanted for Caicedo – someone they believe could go on to become one of the world’s best – and Hogan’s approach allowed Liverpool to get there.

It left Chelsea out-negotiated and out-manoeuvred and may deliver to Klopp one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League – albeit at a fee that reflects that.

Tottenham’s Kane To Have Bayern Medical

England captain Harry Kane is set to have a medical at Bayern Munich after being given permission to travel to Germany by Tottenham.

Bayern and Spurs agreed a deal worth more than 100m euros (£86.4m) for the 30-year-old on Thursday.

The decision to move was then left up to Kane, who is Tottenham’s all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances.

Kane had one year left on his contract and was unlikely to stay with the club.

Providing there are no unexpected issues, Kane’s move will be completed in time to start the Bundesliga season next week.

It was felt the striker wanted a decision around his future made before the season began, but it has taken Bayern most of the summer to reach a point where Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was prepared to do a deal.

Kane had initially been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, but it was unclear whether Levy would have been willing to sell him to another Premier League club.

He could have run down the final year of his contract before leaving on a free transfer in 2024.

Manchester City’s attempt to sign Kane in 2021 prompted the England striker to delay his return for pre-season training, but he played on Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia and South East Asia while negotiations with Bayern continued, last appearing on Sunday against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Spurs will face Brentford in their first match of the season on Sunday while Bayern begin their season against RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup on Saturday.

Kane has won the Premier League Golden Boot three times – in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2020-21 – and with 213 goals from 320 games in the English top-flight he needed just 48 more to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record.

But England’s all-time leading scorer – with 58 international goals – has never won a major trophy with club or country.

Bayern Munich claimed their 33rd Bundesliga title last season – an 11th in a row – and have won the Champions League six times and German Cup on 20 occasions.

New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou had promised to sell Kane his “vision” for the club following his appointment this summer, saying he wanted the forward to stay.

Messi Effect Set To Catapult Major League Soccer To ‘New Level’

Lionel Messi could significantly raise the profile of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the game as a whole in the United States, experts told Reuters, with the Argentine forward’s move to Inter Miami drawing attention from across the globe.

In a surprising turnaround to his career, after winning the World Cup with Argentina and a failed negotiation to return to Barcelona, the 36-year-old joined Inter Miami last month, taking a wave of devoted fans with him to the American East Coast.

Messi is by no means the first star name to move to America, with late Brazil great Pele, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic having previously plied their trade in the country.

But with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner as the new face of its top league, American soccer is heading for new heights ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Now Lionel Messi has come to the MLS and it’s going to definitely catapult it into a whole new level of visibility and brand awareness,” Neil Joyce, CEO & co-founder of CLV Group, told Reuters.

“… I think (the signing of) Messi is recognition of the maturing of the MLS, and the need to increase visibility and brand value in the run-up to the World Cup in 2026.”

SHIRT SALES

According to Google Trends data for the month of July, the announcement of Messi’s signing caused a significant spike in searches for match dates and tickets to see the Argentine, with fans also looking to buy his official pink Inter Miami shirt.

“The demand for Messi’s jersey in Miami has been truly unprecedented. We are working as quickly as possible to make sure that every fan who wants a jersey can get one online or in one of our stores,” an Adidas spokesperson told Reuters.

Football finance expert Joyce said Messi’s move to Inter Miami was a massive boost for Adidas, adding: “Previously, he was playing for PSG (Paris St-Germain) and Barcelona, who have Nike as kit manufacturers.

“Now he’s working with Inter Miami, whose kits are made by Adidas. He’s an Adidas athlete, Argentina (are sponsored by) Adidas. They have brought the value of Messi under one roof, so to speak. There’s value for Adidas there.”

BROADCAST BOOM

The MLS’s viewership is also expected to skyrocket with Messi’s arrival.

In 2022, MLS and Apple TV announced a 10-year partnership, with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday telling Reuters: “For MLS, we couldn’t be happier with how the partnership is going.

“We’re clearly in the early days, but we’re exceeding our expectations in terms of subscribers, and Messi going to Inter Miami helped us a little bit. So we’re very happy.”

The forward’s Inter Miami debut in a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul last month had an average audience of 1.75 million on Spanish-language TV network Univision, making it the largest single-network audience for the MLS since 2004, according to Sports Media Watch.

Asked if Messi’s signing could expand MLS viewership outside the United States, Joyce said: “100 per cent, it will.

“We’ve done some analysis on Messi and his followers and they have huge overlap with South American and Hispanic audiences, which are a massive area of interest to expand the brand and the reach of the MLS.”

However, live broadcasts are not the only way of capitalising on the Messi boom.

“… if you’re a fan of the MLS, and you live in the UK, for instance, it’s obviously harder through time zones to access the live events,” Joyce said.

“But putting together specific digital content around Messi will be a way to engage with those users when it’s not subject to time zones.”

Brazilian Defender Ibanez Joins Al-Ahli From Roma

Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez has joined Al-Ahli from AS Roma on a four-year deal, the Saudi Pro League side said on Thursday.

The clubs did not disclose the transfer fee for the 26-year-old, who joined Roma from Atlanta on a permanent deal in 2021.

Ibanez scored three goals in 48 games for Jose Mourinho’s team last season.

“Welcome to Al-Ahli, Roger!” Al-Ahli posted on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter.

Al-Ahli have named Matthias Jaissle as manager on a three-year deal, after Red Bull Salzburg sacked the German coach.

Ibanez becomes the latest addition to Al-Ahli, who returned to the Pro League following a season in the second division, after Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Alain Saint-Maximin and Franck Kessie.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has announced a Sports Clubs Investment and Privatisation Project involving the league champions Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal.

PIF owns 75 per cent of each of the four clubs, while their respective non-profit foundations own 25 per cent of each.

Players To Watch In The Premier League

As the new season gets underway on Friday with champions Manchester City taking on English Championship winners Burnley, take a closer look at some of the players to watch this season.

Nicolas Jackson | Chelsea

Jackson has an electric pace which he put to good use during a breakthrough campaign for Villarreal last season, scoring 12 league goals in 16 starts and 10 substitute appearances.

Six of his goals last season stemmed from situations where he ran in beyond the last defender, so opponents must try to limit the space he has to sprint into. From transitions and counters, Jackson can be deadly.

Jackson uses his pace to surge in behind defenders, but his dribbling speed is also impressive.

No one scored more goals from their own dribbles than Jackson, and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. was the only player to deliver more direct goal involvements from carries in LaLiga.

He scored 0.45 goals per 90 minutes, excluding penalties with Villarreal last season which was an impressive return.

Dominik Szaboszlai | Liverpool

In the Bundesliga, Szoboszlai was one of only 14 players to have created at least 100 chances for teammates from the start of 2021/22, but of those players he had the fifth highest per 90 average (2.5).

Last season saw Szoboszlai find a more regular position in Leipzig’s side, with 77 per cent of his playing time coming as a right-sided winger.

During the 2022/23 season, Szoboszlai ranked fourth overall in the German topflight for total involvements in shot-ending sequences in open play (163). Interestingly, he had a more equal split between having the shot (49) and being the creator for a shot (48), than any other player in the top 10.

Szoboszlai led the 2022/23 Bundesliga charts for having multiple involvements (being involved in both the build-up to and either the shot itself or the chance creation of a shot) in an open-play shot.

Last season, the Hungarian had the closest similarity score to James Maddison at Leicester City in 2019/20 (94 per cent similarity) – just the second season of top-flight football that the England international had played and one in which he was among the top five players for shot involvements in the Premier League (153 in total).

Rasmus HØjlund | Manchester United

He made his professional debut for his hometown club FC Copenhagen aged 17, and at 18 he joined Sturm Graz in the Austrian topflight. Seven months later he signed for Atalanta.

Hojlund only started 20 matches last season, beginning the campaign as a back-up to Duvan Zapata and only establishing himself in the first XI after the winter break as his teammate struggled with injury.

He scored a goal in the Coppa Italia and it can be said that Hojlund found the net once every 189 minutes he spent on the pitch.

Hojlund is blisteringly fast, recorded by Atalanta’s coaching staff running 100 metres in under 11 seconds. In his coast-to-coast run against Lazio in February, he set off from the edge of his own box and blazed past every opponent – including those with a 40-yard head start – to go through one-on-one against the ‘keeper.

Despite having played as a midfielder and No 10 in youth football, Hojlund was most effective for Atalanta attacking the penalty box, using his acceleration and instincts to find space behind opposing defences.

Moussa Diaby | Aston Villa

Diaby began his career at his hometown club Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Leverkusen in 2019.

He scored 14 goals in all competitions last season for the German side and has represented France on 10 occasions.

The winger has signed on the back of two hugely productive seasons for German side Bayer Leverkusen. He scored 22 goals and supplied 20 assists across 65 league appearances in that period.

Diaby (£6.5m) has the potential to challenge Ollie Watkins (£8.0m) as Aston Villa’s go-to attacking player in 2023/24 Fantasy Premier League

Sandro Tonali | Newcastle United

He is a ball-winner, like former Gennaro Gattuso, but does his best work high up the pitch, creating turnovers in the press and scoring opportunities from them.

His 10 assists between Serie A and the Uega Champions League are a testament to his work ethic and decisiveness in transition

Tonali’s first season at Milan was a flop as he moved from Brescia. In the two years since, he established himself as a pillar of the side, scoring crucial goals in Milan’s run to the 2021/22 Serie A title.

When his team went to pieces during last season’s Uefa Champions League semifinal first-leg defeat to Internazionale, Tonali raged alone against the dying of the light, dragging play forward, sending Brahim Diaz through for a wasted one-on-one and hitting the post himself.

The most obvious spot for Tonali at Newcastle would be on the left of Howe’s 4-3-3, since he tended to play on that side for Milan, His flexibility is an asset, and he may find an entirely new role in his new surroundings.

Marcelo Given Three-Match Ban By Conmebol After Causing Horror Injury

Fluminense’s former Brazil international Marcelo has been handed a three-match ban by CONMEBOL after his lunge at Argentinos Juniors’ Luciano Sanchez left the defender with a horrific injury in a Copa Libertadores clash in Buenos Aires last week.

The 35-year-old left-back will also have to pay a $6 000 fine, South American soccer’s governing body added on Thursday.

Marcelo was dribbling towards Sanchez when his leading foot went past the ball and caught the Argentine high on the shin with force. The Argentinos player’s leg buckled underneath him at a shocking angle, leaving him lying in agony on the pitch.

Sanchez left the pitch on a stretcher with what was later confirmed to be a fracture that the team doctor said he had “never seen before”.

The ex-Real Madrid player was sent off in tears following the incident in the 1-1 draw in the last 16, first leg.

“Today I had a very difficult moment on the pitch,” Marcelo posted on Instagram hours later.

“I unintentionally injured a fellow player. I want to wish him the best possible recovery. All the strength in the world.”

Marcelo has already served the first game of his three-match ban by missing the second leg where the Brazilian side won 2-0.

Ruto Vows To Boost Mozambique Trade Relations

President William Ruto has committed to foster Kenya’s trade volumes with Mozambique.

He said this will help create a favourable trade balance for Kenya.

He made the remarks on Thursday in Maputo during a two-day State Visit hosted by his counterpart President Filipe Nyusi.

He noted that the two countries are exploring opportunities that will guarantee a win-win outcome.

The President explained that between 2018 and 2022, imports from Mozambique increased from Ksh 3.2 billion to Ksh 5.2 billion, while Kenyan exports to Mozambique only increased from Ksh 1.2 billion to Ksh 1.4 billion over the same period.

“In this burgeoning win-win relationship, Mozambique has the upper hand in trade balance terms, yet the opportunities before us take the form of a tide that will lift both our boats,” he said.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of eight MoUs aimed at strengthening the ties between the two nations

The cooperation agreements include Mutual Legal Assistance, Diplomatic Training, Public Service Training, Investment Promotion, Blue Economy and the Mutual recognition of driving licences.

President Ruto committed to the full and speedy implementation of the agreements for the benefit of the people of the two nations.

“I am of the view that it is imperative for us to take advantage of the momentum generated in these engagements to expeditiously implement all the bilateral instruments that have been signed,” he said.

Later, the President visited Maputo Municipal Hall and addressed members and other government officials.

He was presented with Keys to the City of Maputo, the Highest distinction given to an individual.

The Head of State and the First Lady also laid wreaths at Heroe’s Square.

The President noted that Maputo and Kenyan coastal towns have a lot in common, citing opportunities in tourism, fisheries and the blue economy, maritime transport, agriculture, manufacturing, trade and industry.

Present were First Lady Rachel Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries Alfred Mutua (Foreign Affairs), Aden Duale (Defence) and Attorney General Justin Muturi among others.

Lobby Group Wants Kenya Stopped From Borrowing New Loans

Operation Linda Ugatuzi has filed a petition at Milimani law court seeking to prevent the National Treasury from borrowing and allowing any government borrowing until the country’s debt is audited.

Operation Linda Ugatuzi further requests that the court direct the National Treasury and Central Bank of Kenya to rectify the country’s debt data on their respective website.

In an affidavit by Prof. Fred Ogola, Linda Ugatuzi argues that the National Assembly in 2014 made some amendments to the section 50 (97) of the Public Finance Management Act no.18 of 2012, amendments which Operation Linda Ugatuzi claims opened floodgates for the government to borrow money which he claims were not authorized by any appropriate act of parliament as required by law, thus violating the constitution.

Further, he argues that the amendment did away with the mandatory constitution requirement that money received in from of foreign aid or borrowings from the government should be paid into the consolidated fund or the other three public funds established by the constitution.

Similarly, he says that as of 2014/15, the country’s outstanding debt was at Ksh.2.37 trillion, a figure that has tremendously increased.

He argues that the increment has been caused by illegal public debts through schemes of the National treasury.
