Pakistani Man Kills Ugandan Wife After Child’s DNA Results Turn Negative

Ugandan police are holding a Pakistani national who reportedly has killed his wife and hid her remains in a septic tank.

According to police, Waeed Taheed, a resident in Mpigi District, first reported a case of disappearance of his wife Monica Nabukenya,25, on July 16, 2023.

Taheed reportedly suspected Nabukenya of infidelity which prompted him to take their 6-month-old child for a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test.

“Taheed decided to take the child for a DNA test, and it so happened that the results turned negative,” a police statement reads in part.

When he returned home and after some confrontations, police say he decided to kill his wife and dump her body in a septic tank in their compound and partially covered the corpse with soil.

“In the process of interrogation, police asked the suspect to take them to his home. On their arrival, they were hit by a stench of a decomposing body which was found it in a septic tank after a search. After questioning, Taheed admitted killing his wife because of the negative DNA test results,” the police statement adds.

Mr Richard Ddumba, the chairperson of Kalagala Village, Kayabwe Town Council, said the couple has been living a private life until recently when he received information that they had disagreed over the paternity of a six-month-old baby.

“What I know is the couple had only one baby and when the man received rumours that the baby belonged to another man, he took the child for a DNA test which proved that he is not the real father,” he said.

Ddumba said a distressed Taheed approached him four months ago saying he was pushing for a divorce.

It is alleged that Taheed filed a divorce case, but court was yet to pronounce itself on the matter when the murder happened.

“As he was pushing to secure divorce through court, I got shocked to learn that he had allegedly killed the wife already,” he said.

Taheed, according to Ddumba, could have killed the wife either last Thursday or Friday.

CS Murkomen Urges Raila To Call Off Tomorrow’s Protests, Resume Bipartisan Talks

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged Azimio leader Raila Odinga to call off the planned three-day anti-government protests.

In a statement on his Twitter page, Murkomen stated that Raila has the power to call off the protests if he so desires.

“It is still my prayer and considered opinion that Hon Raila Odinga should use his influence to call off the planned mass action. He has the ability and responsibility to do so,” the CS said.

Murkomen added that there is no reason why the leaders shouldn’t resume the Parliamentary talks.

“Now that Azimio are clear that they don’t want to be part of government in any form or shape whether it is nusu mkate or handshake, then I don’t see the reason why we can’t prosecute the issues raised using our democratic institutions,” he added.

He further said that President William Ruto had offered dialogue as a solution and those in government supported his proposal a hundred percent without exception.

“I urge our Azimio friends to be mindful of the nation and resume the talks,” Murkomen said.

Late Sharon Demanded 20 Million House, 5 Million Upkeep, Court Told

The late Sharon Otieno had demanded a house worth 20-25 million in Nairobi or Kisumu, 5 million upkeep money, and a good vehicle the status of a Governor’s wife from former Migori Governor Okoth Obado.

A witness told Milimani High Court Judge Cecilia Githua that Sharon had given the former Migori Governor all these irreducible minimums before she met her death in September 2018.

The court heard that the late Sharon was desirous of a glamorous lifestyle, especially after allegedly getting pregnant for Obado.

According to the witness, she could not go by road when attending her clinic in Nairobi Hospital.

Mula told court that he met Sharon at a hotel in Homa Bay while he was having tea when Sharon approached his table and introduced herself.

Mula told the court that Sharon wanted to go public regarding her affair with the former Governor in a bid to make him assist her financially.

Sharon’s condition was for Obado to buy her a Car, and a Ksh 25m house either in Nairobi or Kisumu and give her Ksh 5m for upkeep.

However, Obado said her demands were too high and she should reconsider her conditions to a reasonable level.

Obado requested the MCA to handle the issue because he was a family man and he understood such scenarios.

“I told him I would try. I asked him to give me time,” said Mula.

Obado subsequently asked his wife to assist him with Sh150,000 preferably to give to Sharon promising to rerun it the following day but the wife gave him only Sh30,000.

What followed after this was a series of meetings between Obado, his personal assistant Michae Oyamo and the MCA.

All with a view to settling Sharon’s matter amicably. The meetings would take place in Nairobi and the governor would cater for Mula’s transport and accommodation.

Obado would find out from Mula what Sharon needed urgently. But Sharon’s earlier demands remained the same.

She still wanted a house worth Sh25 million. She believed she deserve it because she saw herself as the governor’s wife.

Obado was however still not okay with the demands. He suggested that they buy a plot for Sharon where they can build her a good home to stay in.

He estimated the cost to be around Sh4 million. Obado requested Mula to convey the idea to Sharon which he did.

Sharon welcomed the idea and insisted the house should be fully furnished. She was to receive the money at the end of August 2018. However, Sharon never live to see the realization of her demands.

Kenyan Woman Held For Carrying Over 2kg Of Drugs At Vietnam airport

A Kenyan woman was nabbed at Tan Son Nhat airport in Vietnam with 2.3 kilograms of cocaine after evading officials at three different airports, including JKIA.

The 35-year-old woman had flown from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Ethiopia’s Bole International Airport.

She had managed to smuggle and avoid airport security all along.

She flew from Ethiopia to Hamad International Airport in Qatar before landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

The arrest was made after officers from the Ministry of Public Security, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department, border guards, and customs officials examined the passenger’s bags.

According to police, the woman’s bag had been modified to have a second bottom where she jammed the cocaine in the hopes that the authorities wouldn’t catch her.

Following a thorough search, authorities in Ho Chi Minh City recovered 2.3 kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of Ksh.349 million.

How the woman managed to maneuver through the three screenings at the three airports without the authorities noticing peculiar signs inside her suitcase still remains to be a mystery.

Safaricom To Launch Satellite Internet Services

Safaricom is set to launch satellite Internet services at a time when Elon Musk’s Starlink is also preparing to go live with a similar offering in Kenya.

Satellite Internet connections have the potential to shake up traditional telecoms services, which are based on infrastructure that has left many areas without coverage, especially rural parts of the country.

Safaricom will offer the service through a partnership with Starlink’s rival AST SpaceMobile, which has signed agreements with the telco’s ultimate parent firm Vodafone Group Plc.

Vodafone is one of the investors in AST SpaceMobile.

“AST SpaceMobile’s BlueWalker 3 satellite underwent basic functionality testing in 2022, prior to a formal trial in the second quarter of 2023, in partnership with Vodacom and Safaricom in Kenya,” Safaricom’s intermediate parent firm Vodacom Group Limited says in its latest annual report.

“After successful completion of the trial, AST SpaceMobile will scale up their satellite deployments in partnership with Vodacom to provide ubiquitous communications to 4G devices across Africa and beyond.” Starlink, on the other hand, had indicated its satellite-based services would be available starting in the quarter that ended last month.

Texas-based AST SpaceMobile is building the first space-based mobile broadband network accessible directly by standard mobile phones.

The space-based data services will add to telcos’ current offerings, which are delivered through fibre optic cables, Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Safaricom and other Vodafone affiliates will share revenue with AST SpaceMobile on a 50/50 basis, with the parties agreeing to maintain mutual exclusivity in their markets to ensure the success of the partnership.

AST SpaceMobile’s operations span building a satellite constellation, which is a space-based cellular broadband network that allows existing, unmodified smartphones to connect to satellites in areas with coverage gaps.

Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Now Available In Kenya

Elon Musk’s satellite internet firm, Starlink, is now available in Kenya.

This move marks the company’s expansion into the African market and is part of Starlink’s mission to provide internet access to remote and underserved areas around the world.

The company’s entry into Kenya will be faced with stiff competition from some players in the business. Safaricom, the leading internet service provider in Kenya, has spent billions of shillings over the past five years on building its fixed-data network to connect homes, amid growth for online streaming services like Netflix. The current internet service providers mainly offer connectivity via fibre optic cables, over Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Starlink, an offshoot of Mr. Musk’s space technology firm SpaceX, on the other hand, delivers internet from satellites. The company uses satellites to provide broadband internet across the globe, much like the global positioning system (GPS) provides location data to cell phones around the planet. Unlike GPS, it requires thousands of satellites for service to work without drops in coverage.

“Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency service is made possible via the world’s largest constellation of highly advanced satellites operating in a low orbit around the Earth,” the company says on its website. The firm will be targeting corporate customers to buy high internet speed internet. At the end of last year, Starlink said that its American customers on its fixed internet plans could expect speeds of between 20 to 100 megabits per second (Mbps), while for business customers, the realistic expectation numbers double to 40-220 Mbps.

The plan to venture into Kenya comes at a time when the demand for high internet speed for streaming, video calls, and online gaming is on the rise due to digitization and expensive data charges. With the launch of Starlink in Kenya, customers can expect a reliable and affordable internet service that will help bridge the digital divide in the country.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX keeps adding Starlink coverage over new countries and regions, while continuously notching new commercial customers as it got the green light to provide satellite internet on moving vehicles like recreational vehicles, boats, yachts, or cruise ships. This is a significant step towards achieving the company’s goal of providing internet access to people in every corner of the world.

Real-time VAR Explanations At Women’s World Cup ‘More Transparent’ – Fifa

Match officials explaining VAR decisions live to stadiums and television audiences for Women’s World Cup games will make the process “more transparent”, Fifa’s referee chief Pierluigi Collina said on Tuesday.

The concept will be used at a major tournament for the first time when the World Cup starts on Thursday, having been trialled at the men’s Club World Cup in Morocco this year and the men’s U20 World Cup in Argentina last month.

Collina, chairman of the Fifa Referees Committee, told reporters that there had been positive feedback from the trials.

“We want to give more transparency, more understanding of the decision made by the referee,” the Italian said.

“The referees here in Sydney have already practised at the training grounds using the PA system and things are going well.

“We are very confident this new tool will be very positive.”

Fans have long called for more transparency over VAR (video assistant referee) decisions.

Match officials at the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia will consult a screen on the side of the pitch before relaying their decision, the reason for it, the players involved and a brief description of the incident through the PA system via a microphone on their shirt.

Collina admitted to some trepidation with referees required to explain in English, which is not the mother tongue for many, adding extra pressure.

“In anything there are pros and cons,” he said. “After we will discuss and consider what is best for the future.”

Referees are also under instruction to clamp down on time-wasting at the World Cup.

West Ham Spoil Postecoglou’s Tottenham Debut In Friendly

West Ham spoiled Ange Postecoglou’s much-anticipated Tottenham coaching debut Tuesday with a pulsating 3-2 pre-season friendly victory in Perth.

West Ham thwarted Spurs’ late rally in a freewheeling contest between the London rivals in front of 46 266 fans at Optus Stadium.

The departure of captain Declan Rice to Arsenal has barely affected West Ham, who won their third straight pre-season game after Gianluca Scamacca broke the deadlock in the 78th minute.

They exploited a new-look Tottenham, who showcased glimpses of the high-octane style expected under Postecoglou but were creaky in defence.

Tottenham had a remarkable 30 shots to four but rued a slew of missed opportunities.

Harry Kane took Tottenham’s captaincy reins amid uncertainty over his future, having been courted aggressively by Bayern Munich.

He had an early close-range shot sensationally blocked by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski but was relatively subdued before being substituted at halftime.

Marquee signings Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon started in their Tottenham debuts.

Former Empoli goalkeeper Vicario is seen as a replacement for captain Hugo Lloris, who has skipped the tour as he seeks opportunities elsewhere.

Vicario was unable to curtail a couple of well-executed set pieces from West Ham before being substituted at halftime.

Much like Postecoglou’s previous teams, Tottenham started in swashbuckling style with several early shots on goal denied by Fabianski.

West Ham drew first blood against the run of play when striker Danny Ings finished off a superb Jarrod Bowen cross with a header past Vicario.

Tottenham’s defence was again exposed by an efficient West Ham as 18-year-old Divin Mubama headed another slick set piece into the net.

Spurs continued to press only to be denied by Fabianski, who had been outstanding in West Ham’s 6-2 win over Perth Glory on Saturday.

Postecoglou rang the changes at halftime, flipping his team entirely, and it did the trick as Tottenham dictated in inclement conditions.

They were rewarded when Giovani Lo Celso scored from close range before debutant Destiny Udogie levelled in the 71st minute with a brilliant header.

But Scamacca scored against the run of play to deny Postecoglou a fairy-tale start.

Tottenham’s Asia-Pacific tour continues against Leicester City in Thailand on July 23 before travelling to Singapore to play Lion City Sailors.

West Ham return home to play Dagenham and Redbridge on July 22.
