I will not seek re-election under UDA ticket, declares Irungu Kanga’ta

Murangโ€™a Governor Irungu Kangโ€™ata has announced that he will not seek re-election on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2027 General Election.

The Murangโ€™a Governor, however, maintained his loyalty to the UDA party for the remainder of his term.

In a statement issued on May 3, 2026, Kangโ€™ata cited differences in political strategy, citizen engagement and policy priorities as the basis for his decision, though he emphasised that the divergence is not personal.

Kangโ€™ata expressed appreciation for his long-standing working relationship with President William Ruto, noting that their association dates back to 2013 when he first served as Kiharu MP.

โ€œI express my sincere gratitude for the long and meaningful relationship I have had with His Excellency the President. Our association stretches back to 2013 when I first served as Member of Parliament for Kiharu. Over the years, as MP, Senator, and now Governor, we have worked closely in advancing shared goals for our people,โ€ he said.

โ€œI also had the honour of serving as Senate Majority Whip, a role that further deepened our cooperation and mutual respect. These are not small matters, and I acknowledge them with appreciation.โ€

However, he underscored the need for a shift in leadership approach, calling for politics anchored on persuasion, dialogue and respect, rather than confrontation.

โ€œLeadership must be anchored in persuasion, not pressure; in dialogue, not coercion,โ€ he said, warning that rising political tensions risk undermining democratic values.

โ€œMy foremost responsibility is to the people who entrusted me with leadership. That mandate requires independent judgment, candour, and decisions that safeguard both their immediate interests and long-term prosperity. I have shared my views openly within the party and engaged in candid discussions at the highest level. While those engagements have been respectful, we have not reached full convergence.โ€

The governor also outlined what he considers key areas for economic transformation, highlighting manufacturing, education and health as priority sectors.

He proposed full funding for free day secondary education, estimated at Sh40 billion annually, alongside increased investment in teacher quality and infrastructure.

On manufacturing, he called for lower power costs, export-driven incentives and the establishment of industrial zones to boost local production and job creation.

In the health sector, Kangโ€™ata emphasised strengthening primary healthcare, ensuring a consistent supply of essential medicines and expanding insurance coverage sustainably.

Despite signalling a future political realignment, Kangโ€™ata said he remains a committed member of UDA and will continue to work with the national government until the end of the current term.

โ€œIn light of this, and after careful reflection, I wish to state that when the appropriate time comes, I will not seek to defend my seat on the partyโ€™s ticket. I will, at a later stage, communicate the platform through which I will present myself to the electorate,โ€ he said.

โ€œUntil then, I remain a disciplined and committed member of the party. I will continue to serve diligently in my current capacity and to cooperate with the national government in delivering development to our people. I will remain loyal to the party and to the President through the remainder of this term, up to the 2027 general election.โ€

He added that he will announce the platform under which he intends to vie at a later stage.

ODM Insists No Talks With UDA Until Dues Cleared

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party now demands the settlement of the debt owed to it by the government.

Speaking on Sunday, May 3, in Mombasa, ODM Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati said they will not have coalition talks with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party if the debt has not been settled.

โ€œThe debts the government owes us as the ODM party, we are asking, please, our brothers, give us our money.

โ€œThere will be no negotiations. The irreducible minimum demand is that we get our money first before we move forward,โ€ said Arati.

At the same time, the Kisii Governor assured ODM members that he will ensure the coalition talks with UDA are conducted fairly.

File image of Kisii Governor Simba Arati.

Arati emphasized that all issues will be discussed openly, with no hidden agendas from the UDA party.

โ€œAs the Deputy Party Leader, together with the Party Leader Oburu Oginga, we will ensure that the discussions we will have with our brothers are fair, and there will be no hiding of cards under the table. Every card must be on the table,โ€ Arati added.

As of 2025, the National Treasury owed the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party over Ksh12.6 billion from the Political Parties Fund.

In August 2025, the party threatened to pursue legal action against the National Treasury over the debt.

This comes a week after President William Ruto hosted officials from UDA and ODM parties at the State House, Nairobi.

In a statement, President Ruto disclosed that the meeting was between the UDA Steering Committee and the ODM Central Management Committee.

The Head of State noted that the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration and exploring mutual areas of interest.

During the meeting, ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga and her UDA Counterpart, Governor Cecily Mbarire, were assigned new roles.

“In a key resolution, the meeting mandated the respective party chairpersons to continue structured and regular consultations across party organs,” the statement read in part.

The two parties further resolved to establish a Broad-Based Management Committee.

“The two-party leaders agreed to establish a Broad-based Management Committee comprising the party leaders, selected Cabinet Secretaries, and the Majority and the Minority Leaders in Parliament.”

“The Committee will be tasked with coordinating and synchronising the legislative and executive agenda of the government to ensure coherence and effective service delivery,” the statement continued.

Further, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to engage in constructive dialogue, unity of purpose, and a shared vision for national development and inclusive governance.

Four Arrested in Jet Fuel Theft Attempt at Wilson Airport

By Andrew Kariuki

A suspected jet fuel theft operation has been stopped at Wilson Airport after detectives intercepted a vehicle allegedly transporting stolen fuel under the guise of routine airport activity.

Officers from the Kenya Airports Police Unit (KAPU) flagged down a white Mitsubishi Canter, registration KBM 647D, within the airport precincts after it aroused suspicion.

Upon inspection, the vehicle was found carrying four drums, each containing approximately 200 litres of jet fuel.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fuel had been siphoned from an aircraft stationed at the NASD hangar.

The aircraft, operated by Airworks Aviation, was reportedly undergoing maintenance at the time, creating an opportunity for the alleged theft.

Authorities say the operation was halted before the suspects could exit the airport, effectively disrupting what investigators believe was a coordinated attempt to move the fuel undetected.

The alleged owner of the consignment, Gladys Ndumba Kanairo, was found without a valid gate pass.

Additionally, the vehicle lacked the required authorization from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to transport petroleum products.

Kanairo was arrested alongside the driver, Timothy Wambugu Maina and two other suspects, Kennedy Njoka Kinuthia and Abdulmalik Musinga.

The four are currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.

The impounded vehicle and the recovered fuel have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.

Spirit Airlines shutting down after rescue talks collapse

Stacy Boit,

Spirit Airlines is shutting down after failing to secure a $500m (ยฃ368m) bailout from the Trump administration.

The budget airline was in talks with the US government about a rescue deal that would have saved it from going out of business.

But discussions collapsed and the carrier said in an announcement on its website on Saturday that with “great disappointment” it had “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately”. That included canceling all of its flights, stranding many passengers and workers.

Spirit was emerging from its second bankruptcy filing in recent years before the US-Israel war in Iran, but the resulting surge in jet fuel costs pushed it over the brink.

“All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport,” the company said in its statement posted early Saturday morning.

Passengers reported receiving messages about the cancellations, but some still arrived at the airport in the morning with their luggage. Spirit’s customer service is no longer available.

The airline said it would automatically process refunds for flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment, but a bankruptcy court will determine how to compensate those who booked flights using a voucher, credit or airline points. Those who used a travel agent should contact the agent, it said.

It also said it could not reimburse guests for emergency hotel stays or replacement flights.

In the statement, Spirit’s CEO Dave Davis said: “In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business.

“However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the company.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Saturday, though, disputed that account, saying Spirit’s demise was not the result of fuel price increases, which are largely due to the war with Iran.

“Spirit was in dire straits long before the war with Iran,” Duffy said, citing the company’s multiple bankruptcy filings, in a news conference at Newark Liberty International Airport.

“Their model wasn’t working,” he added. “The war was not the impetus.”

The airline’s demise was so abrupt that it has left many ticketholders in the lurch.

One Spirit customer, Yash Kothari, told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that he didn’t learn about the airline’s shutdown until he arrived at Philadelphia International Airport for a flight at 05:45 local time (09:45 GMT) on Saturday.

“The email came in at 1 am, so I was unaware,” Kothari told the outlet.

Other US airlines โ€“ including Delta Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines and Frontier Airlines โ€“ have stepped in to offer “rescue fares” to stranded Spirit customers.

A passenger who asked not to be identified told the BBC that she received a notification through Spirit’s app in the middle of the night, while she was on a short trip in Dallas, that all flights were being cancelled and the airline was shutting down.

“I honestly thought the app was being hacked or something,” the woman said. “And then I did some quick googling and realized it was real and realized I probably needed to immediately look for flights back home. I was hoping it would give me a leg up that a lot of people who were affected were probably asleep.”

Almost immediately, though, the situation began “looking pretty bleak”. She ultimately secured a ticket on Frontier for roughly $180 ( ยฃ132) compared to the $108 she had spent for her round-trip flight on Spirit.

“I feel a lot of sadness for Spirit employees. And a lot of sadness for what this whole situation implies for the middle class,” she said. “I realistically can’t afford to buy flights that might be cancelled and rescheduled.”

The BBC has verified the woman’s identity and flight purchases.

Fuel costs can make up as much as 40% of an airline’s outgoings, and airlines have seen the cost of jet fuel double since the US and Israeli strikes began at the end of February.

Savanthi Syth, airlines analyst at the investment bank Raymond James, said spiralling jet fuel costs in the wake of the Iran war had proved “the final nail in the coffin” for Spirit.

Speaking to the BBC, Syth said the operator had shied away from the radical overhaul it needed during a 2024 bankruptcy procedure.

Spirit had been in the process of making the changes it needed in its current bankruptcy process, scaling back the number of flights it was offering and aircraft it owned, she said.

But its ability to survive the year was in question even before the Iran war, Syth added.

“If it wasn’t for the fuel scenario, they would have been okay through the summer, beyond the summer I would have said it was still precarious.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union, which represents Spirit staff, said the news was “devastating for the thousands of airline workers who showed up every day and gave everything to keep Spirit Airlines in the air”.

“Our members on the ramp did not cause this failure; corporate mismanagement and poor financial stewardship did,” the IAM union continued in a statement. “Our members deserve answers and support.”

The IAM union said it would be providing additional support to its members affected by Spirit’s shutdown and urged the airline’s leadership and the bankruptcy court “to ensure that every worker receives the full severance, back pay, and benefits they are owed”.

Some airlines haveย been cutting flightsย and others haveย hiked fares to copeย with the cost increases. At the same time, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) hasย warned Europe could run out of jet fuelย in as little as six weeks.

At the end of April, Spirit had been confident its rescue deal with the Trump administration was to be finalised imminently.

But after that deal fell through, Trump on Friday told BBC partner CBS the airline had been offered “a final proposal” to keep it in business.

The earlier plan, which would have seen the US government take effective ownership of as much as 90% of the airline, faced stiff opposition from Wall Street, Capitol Hill and even a member of Trump’s own cabinet. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Reuters a rescue would amount to tossing “good money after bad”.

Trump says US to ‘guide’ stranded ships through Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump speaks to the press outside the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC, on April 13, 2026. Trump refused to apologize Monday for criticizing Pope Leo XIV, after the pontiff called for an end to violence in the Iran war. "There's nothing to apologize for. He's wrong," Trump told reporters, a day after a social media post and comments slamming the US-born pope. (Photo by Brendan SMIALOWSKI / AFP)

Stacy Boit,

The United States says it will on Monday begin trying to free merchant ships stranded by Iran’s closure of the key shipping channel, the Strait of Hormuz, since the start of the war.

US President Donald Trump said “Project Freedom” was a “humanitarian gesture” and that any interference would “be dealt with forcefully”.

Some 15,000 US service personnel, guided-missile destroyers and more than 100 aircraft would be involved, US Central Command (Centcom) said, adding that the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue.

The move comes as the two countries observe a temporary ceasefire, which began on 8 April, and as they work on agreeing on a permanent peace plan.

However a senior Iranian official warned that any US attempt to interfere in the strait would be considered a violation of the ceasefire,

Iran’s military said it will attack any foreign forces if they enter the strait, “especially, the aggressive US army”.

Iran’s closure of the channel – which is crucial to oil exports from the Gulf – has seen fuel prices rise globally and also left thousands of sailors stranded on some 2,000 ships trapped by the blockade.

About 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas usually passes through the strait.

In Trump’s post on social media, he said “countries from all over the world” had asked the US if they could help free up the ships, describing them as “merely neutral and innocent bystanders”.

Trump added the operation will be made on behalf of the US, Iran and other Middle Eastern nations, without listing which countries. He did not provide further details on how the operation would be managed.

He also said that US representatives were having “very positive” discussions with Iran, and that those talks “could lead to something very positive for all”.

An estimated 20,000 sailors have been trapped in the Gulf since the start of the war with Iran. There has been growing concern over dwindling supplies and the effects on sailors’ physical and mental health.

The United Kingdom Maritime Transportation Operation (UKMTO) on Sunday reported that a tanker had been hit by an “unknown projectile” in the strait, adding that the crew were safe.

Also on Monday, the Pakistani government said 22 crew members from Iranian container ship Touska – seized by the US last month – will be “handed over to the Iranian authorities”.

The Touska was intercepted on its way to an Iranian port as part of the US’s blockade, with the crew evacuated to Pakistan.

Pakistan said the repatriation of the crew is “a confidence-building measure by the United States of America”.

Trump’s announcement came after Iranian state-linked media said Tehran had received a US response to its latest peace proposal.

Iran said the response, delivered via Pakistan, was being reviewed, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Iran says US has responded to its latest peace proposal

The US is yet to formally confirm it has replied to Iran. However, Trump reportedly told Israel’s Kan News on Sunday that the proposal was unacceptable to him.

Iranian state media said Tehran’s 14-point peace plan asked for Washington to withdraw its forces from near Iran’s borders and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports, and for all hostilities to cease – including Israel’s offensive in Lebanon.

It also called for an agreement between the two countries to be reached within 30 days.

Iranian state media added that the proposal urged the two warring sides to focus on “ending the war” rather than extending a current ceasefire.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei was quoted by state media as saying that “at this stage, we do not have nuclear negotiations” – a key demand by Washington.

Iran has repeatedly denied it is seeking a nuclear bomb and says its programme is only for peaceful purposes, though the country is the only non-nuclear-armed state to have enriched uranium at near weapons-grade level.

On Saturday, Trump confirmed that Washington had received the latest Iranian peace proposal.

In a post on Truth Social, he wrote that he would review the plan, but that he “can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years”.

Speaking to reporters later on Saturday, he said he had been told “about the concept of the deal”, adding: “They’re going to give me the exact wording now.”

Asked by the BBC about whether military strikes against targets inside Iran could be renewed, Trump said it was “a possibility”.

“If they misbehave. If they do something bad,” he said. “But right now we’ll see.”

The US president appeared disinclined to withdraw from the conflict entirely, saying “we’re not leaving” and “we’re going to do it, so nobody has to go back in two years or five years”.

The Iranian state-linked agencies said Tehran’s latest proposal was in response to a nine-point US plan, which envisaged a two-month ceasefire.

GB win mixed 4x400m bronze as five teams make Worlds

Stacy Boit,

Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s mixed 4x400m team won bronze at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana, while four other GB teams also qualified automatically for the 2027 World Athletics Championships.

Alex Haydock-Wilson, Lina Nielsen, Jake Minshull and Yemi Mary John finished third in three minutes 8.24 seconds, behind the USA and Jamaica.

A place on the podium qualifies the 4×400 mixed team for theย inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championshipsย in Budapest in September.

GB’s men’s 4x100m, the women’s 4x400m and the mixed 4x100m line-ups progressed to Sunday’s finals from Saturday’s heats, earning them a place in Beijing next year.

The women’s 4x100m team, who were disqualified after finishing second in their first day heat, came in second in their Sunday repechage to take one of four remaining World Championships slots.

However the men’s 4x400m quartet, who finished seventh in their first race, placed third in their repechage and will bid to qualify for Beijing on time at a later date.

The women’s 4x400m squad finished fourth, while the men’s and mixed 4x100m teams both failed to get the baton round in their finals.

British athletes won medals in all five relay events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but failed to reach the podium at last year’s World Championships in Tokyo.

Rose ties for 65th with new McLaren clubs

Stacy Boit,

England’s Justin Rose finished in a tie for 65th on two over par in his first tournament with his new McLaren clubs.

Cameron Young won the Cadillac Championship in Miami on 19 under, six shots clear of fellow American Scottie Scheffler.

Rose was using clubs manufactured by Formula 1 team McLaren, having signed to become their first professional on the PGA Tour.

Six over after three rounds, he shot a four-under 68 at Doral’s Blue Monster Course on Sunday.

Rose has been without a deal with a club manufacturer since leaving Honma in 2020.

Young’s win – his third on the PGA Tour – was wrapped up in front of watching US President Donald Trump.

World number one Scheffler has finished runner-up in three successive tournaments, including the Masters.

Compatriot Ben Griffin was a stoke further back in third, while England’s Alex Fitzpatrick finished in a share of ninth on nine under.

Sinner wins in Madrid to set Masters title record

By Stacy Boit,

Jannik Sinner became the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1,000 titles after beating Alexander Zverev in straight sets to win the Madrid Open.

The Italian first seed completed an impressive 6-1 6-2 victory in 58 minutes against the world number three to achieve his record-breaking feat.

Sinner, 24, has won the opening three ATP 1,000 events of the season in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo, and also triumphed five months ago in Paris.

“I think there is a lot of work behind it. A lot of dedication and sacrifice I put in every day. Obviously, it means a lot to me, seeing these results,” said Sinner, who has now beaten Zverev in nine consecutive meetings.

“At some point, results are going to be down, which is normal. I’m very happy that I’ve continued to believe in myself. I’m showing up every day, at every practice session, trying to put in the right work with the right discipline.”

Sinner surpassed the mark of Novak Djokovic, who won four consecutive events on three occasions, and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who triumphed in four straight tournaments in 2013.

Djokovic also lifted five trophies in a row on two occasions, between Indian Wells and the Canadian Open in 2011, and from the 2014 Paris Masters to the 2015 Rome Masters, but did not play in Monte Carlo and Madrid respectively in the midst of those runs.

The Serb, 38, is also the only player to complete a career ‘Golden Masters’ of winning all nine Masters titles – something Sinner can match if he triumphs in Rome next week.

The current world number oneย lost in the finalย to Carlos Alcaraz last year in what was the Italian’s first tournament since serving a three-month doping ban.

Sinner dominated Sunday’s final in the Spanish capital, racing into a 5-0 first lead against the second seed, converting all four break points he earned, and not facing a single break point himself.

He broke for 2-1 in the second set, then once more for 5-2 before serving out the match for victory against two-time Madrid champion Zverev.

Sinner will also be the heavy favourite for next month’s French Open, where he fell just short to Alcaraz last year in aย thrilling five-set final.

Should he win the French Open, Sinner would also complete a career Grand Slam of winning all four majors – becoming only the 10th man to achieve the feat.

Alcaraz, who became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam with his Australian Open triumph in January, did not play in Madrid and the 22-year-old hasย withdrawn from Roland Garrosย with a wrist injury.

Sinner won the hard court tournaments in Paris, Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set for a record 37 times in a row, before Tomas Machac snatched the second set in their third-round meeting on the Monte Carlo clay.

He has not dropped a set since, including in the Monte Carlo final against great rival and defending champion Alcaraz.

Kenya Power to Switch Off Supply in Four Counties This Monday

By George Ndeto,

Residents in several parts of the country are facing a day without electricity as Kenya Power initiates scheduled maintenance work today, Monday, May 4. The utility firm announced yesterday that the planned blackouts will impact specific regions withinย Nairobi, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, and Kirinyagaย counties.

The outages, which are part of the company’s routine network upgrades, are expected to last between eight and nine hours depending on the location.

Impacted Regions and Schedules

In the capital city,ย Nairobi, technicians will be working alongย Kingara Road. Supply is expected to be cut from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., affecting Kingara Close and the immediate neighborhood.

Moving to the Rift Valley, parts of Kericho Countyโ€”specifically within Litein Townโ€”will experience disruptions starting slightly earlier at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. Impacted areas include:

In Uasin Gishu, the maintenance team will focus on the Kamoret and Sambut areas. Residents in Kamagut and Sunrise should expect dry taps and dark rooms between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Finally, in Kirinyaga County, a major shutdown is scheduled for the Karaini and Old Kangaita regions during the standard 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. window. This will affect local markets, schools, and the Kangaita Tea Factory.

Kenol Office Relocation Complete

The announcement comes shortly after Kenya Power successfully moved its customer service hub inย Kenol Town. As of late April, operations shifted from the Shuhan Building in Kabati to a more modern facility.

The new office is now located at theย Jotis Business Centre, situated near the PCEA Church in Kenol Town. The company had previously issued a notice regarding the move, thanking the public for their cooperation during the transition.

“We appreciate your patience during this period and look forward to providing enhanced services from our new location,” the company stated in a recent brief.

Antonelli steps up his level in dramatic fashion

Stacy Boit,

Kimi Antonelli’s impressive victory in the Miami Grand Prix, his third win in a row, was “something special”, says 1996 world champion Damon Hill.

“We witnessed this young boy showing us what enormous potential he clearly has, and I’m almost stunned with how he has coped this season,” Hill told BBC Radio 5 Live.

On top of that, Hill added, 19-year-old Antonelli is “showing up” his team-mate George Russell, who started the season as favourite, but finds himself staring at a 20-point deficit in the championship after four races.

Antonelli’s win also marked another statistical milestone for the Italian.

Already the youngest pole winner and theย youngest driver to lead championship,ย he is now only the third driver in history to take his first three pole positions in a row. In that, he is in exalted company – Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher are the others.

And he joins Hill and Mika Hakkinen as the first driver to win his first three races consecutively.

All four of those drivers are world champions. Two of them are in the debate for the greatest driver who has ever lived. It’s a stretch, to say the least, to argue Antonelli is heading into that discussion just yet, but he has made quite the impression already this year.

This is only Antonelli’s second season in Formula 1. His first showed occasional promise, but nothing that suggested this was going to come next.

Yes, Mercedes have the best car, and yes the fates turned against Russell in various ways in both the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, which he could easily have won.

But that should take nothing away from Antonelli, who has stepped up his level this season in dramatic fashion.
