Man City Sign Defender Gvardiol From Leipzig

Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol has joined Premier League champions Manchester City from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig on a five-year deal, the treble winners announced on Saturday.

Gvardiol was signed for Sh14 billion, making the 21-year-old the second most expensive defender in history behind Harry Maguire, who was signed for Sh14.4 billion by Manchester United in 2019.

Gvardiol is Pep Guardiola’s second signing in this transfer window after Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic joined from Chelsea. City won their first Champions League title in June and also took the F.A. Cup to complete a rare treble.

“I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City – after the season they have just had – is a real honor for me,” Gvardiol said in a statement.

“Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the treble says everything you need to know about the quality of this team.

“To have the chance to work with Pep Guardiola will be amazing. I know I am not yet the finished article and I am sure my game will progress under the best coach in football.”

Gvardiol joined Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2020 and made 87 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga club since his debut in 2021, helping them win their first German Cup title and reach the Europa League semi-finals.

Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga last season. Gvardiol, who has 21 caps for Croatia and helped them finish third at the 2022 World Cup, is the latest big name to leave the club.

Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai joined Liverpool in July while French forward Christopher Nkunku and Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer switched to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, respectively, in June.

WHO: Kenyans Are Only Partially Shielded From Lethal Tobacco Products

According to the World Health Organisation, Kenyans are only partially protected from tobacco because the country has not implemented the full package of control policies.

Based to the organization, Kenyans and most people worldwide are protected by at least one best practice policy that helps save lives from deadly tobacco. Nonetheless, this represents significant progress since the Kenya Tobacco Control Act was passed in 2007.

In accordance to the WHO, 5.6 billion people worldwide – five times more than in 2007 – or 71 percent of the world’s population are now protected.

Pursuant to the WHO, smoking rates have decreased in the 15 years since WHO’s MPOWER tobacco control measures were implemented globally. Without this decline, the world would have an estimated 300 million more smokers today.

According to the Ministry of Health, tobacco still kills approximately 6,000 Kenyans each year.

This WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, focuses on protecting the public from second-hand smoke, highlighting that nearly 40% of countries now have smoke-free indoor public places.

The report rates the country’s progress in tobacco control and shows that two more countries, Mauritius and the Netherlands, have achieved a best-practice level in all MPOWER measures, a feat that only Brazil and Türkiye had accomplished until now.

“These data show that slowly but surely, more and more people are being protected from the harms of tobacco by WHO’s evidence-based best-practice policies,” Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said.

“I congratulate Mauritius on becoming the first country in Africa and the Netherlands on becoming the first in the European Union to implement the full package of WHO tobacco control policies at the highest level. WHO stands ready to support all countries to follow their example and protect their people from this deadly scourge.”

“With a strong political commitment, we have made great progress in tobacco control policies in Mauritius. Our country has adopted the MPOWER strategy and is moving resolutely towards a smoke-free country,” Republic of Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth said.

ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Expresses Hope To Arrest And Prosecute Putin

Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has stated that they are committed to demonstrating to the world that justice at their level is not “hot air.”

Khan told TV 47 on Friday that the arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin has the legal force of a court order.

In March 2023, Khan issued an arrest warrant for President Putin.

It has accused Russia’s President of war crimes and has focused its claims on the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

According to the report, the crimes were committed in Ukraine at least since February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, has also been served with an arrest warrant.

Khan stated on Friday that the ICC independent judges reviewed his warrant application before it was issued and agreed with the assessment that the standard of evidence was sufficient for issuance.

“I have been trying my best and I have given an undertaking God willing that we will not be bringing cases that are not strong,” he said.

“This is the time that we have to show international justice is not hot air and false promises. There is a foundation to it.”

Khan expressed confidence in that there is a foundation in the arrest warrant for Putin.

“Now it is for us to make sure that we can do our job in all situations of the world because every human life matters equally,” he added.

Khan stated that, while he respects Russia’s role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the law must be applied in the most effective way possible – “the law must apply as effectively as possible as far as possible.”

He stated that the Hague-based court is a last resort and that justice should be served at home.

History Of Sagana State Lodge In President Ruto’s 2022 Victory

President William Ruto for the first time since beginning his term as the country’s fifth today embarked on an extensive tour of the vast Mt Kenya region.

Despite Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s support for ex-prime minister Raila Odinga, the populous and strategic region was critical in Ruto’s presidential victory.

Aside from the numerous development projects that the president plans to commission and launch during his five-day tour, his trip is rich in political symbolism.

Ruto will visit the strategically located Sagana State Lodge for the first time, a venue that was crucial in Uhuru’s political schemes against him ahead of the 2022 general elections.

Ruto will hold a massive prayer and thanksgiving service at Sagan State Lodge on Sunday in an attempt to exorcise Uhuru’s past.

It was at this venue that Uhuru on February 23, 2022, that Uhuru officially endorsed Raila after hosting at least three meetings at the Sagana State Lodge.

In this Sagana three Uhuru said ‘Raila tosha”.”I’m asking you to support Raila Odinga as he means well for the Country. When “my young man reforms”, we will consider him,” Uhuru said as he appealed to his backyard to back Raila.

At the Sagana III meeting, Uhuru was bold in saying that Raila was the best fit not only for the Mt Kenya region but Kenya at large.

He later convened another final fourth meeting in July 2022 in which he put a strong case on why the region needed to vote for Raila and not Ruto.

Uhuru’s high-profile strategy meetings against Ruto’s presidential bid before the August 9, 2022, general elections, however, hit a cropper after he failed to rally the region behind Raila.

And on Sunday, as Ruto will be storming Mt Kenya to stamp his authority as head of state, the clergy will hold special prayers to cleanse the State Lodge and exorcise it of Uhuru’s ghosts.

The President will be storming the strategically located Sagana State Lodge at a time when he has sanctioned talks with the opposition despite his initial tough stance against dialogue.

President Ruto Assures Kenyans His Government Won’t Allow Nusu Mkate

President William Ruto has once again vowed that he will not allow a power-sharing (nusu mkate) government with the Opposition.

Speaking in Kiambu on Saturday, Ruto said he is not one to bow to pressure.

“Ile vitisho walikuwa nayo ndio wapate serikali ya nusu mkate haitafanyika tena. haiwezekani,” he said.

The President vowed to be tough on the Opposition, noting that he will work towards delivering his manifesto to Kenyans.

“Nitawakalia ngumu. Mtu anataka kuharibia watu biashara, habembelezwi,” Ruto said.

Allies of President Ruto have accused the Opposition of only being interested in sharing power with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The opposition, however, refutes the same, insisting that their only interest is electoral reforms and the cost of living, which it claims is unbearable.

Man Claims Hospital Duped Him To Sell Kidney for Ksh1.5 Million

A middle-aged man sought legal redress in court, alleging that his nephew conspired with a local hospital to dupe him into selling his kidney for Ksh1.5 million.

The embattled man claimed that he assisted his nephew with the hope of receiving part of the money in return.

The incident occurred in May 2019, when the nephew was diagnosed with kidney failure. The nephew sought the assistance of his resentful uncle, but the latter refused to donate the kidney and instead demanded half of the money before agreeing to surgery.

“The man begged me to donate my kidney so he could live.” “I told him I couldn’t do it for free because it would ruin my life, and that’s when we agreed on the money,” the complainant lamented in an emotional interview with KTN News.

However, as his nephew’s health deteriorated, the man felt compelled to donate a kidney in the hopes of receiving a token as an incentive.

When he arrived at the hospital, he claimed a doctor handed him a contract that he believed captured their agreement on how he would be paid the Ksh1.5 million.

He signed the document and went on to save his nephew. He had no idea that the contract and surgery would lead him down a road filled with unexpected turns and regrets.

To the defendant’s chagrin, the hospital contract stated that he voluntarily donated his kidney.

When the nephew recovered, the kidney donor approached him about the situation, only to be allegedly sidelined.

The nephew claimed that the contract overruled their verbal agreement and that the kidney was given freely.

“In fact, the doctor told me that if I offered my kidney, I would receive all of my money after the surgery.”

The hospital responded by claiming that the kidney was given as a donation and denying any knowledge of the agreement between the two parties.

Outraged by this turn of events, the man filed a lawsuit against the private hospital and requested that the Directorate of Criminal Investigation look into the matter.

He also asked the DPP’s office to expedite his case.

Further, in his petition to the court, the man requested that the facility be deregistered if found guilty of duping him into donating the kidney.

CS Murkomen Appoints 15-Member Team To The E-mobility Task Force

Kipchumba Murkomen, Transport Cabinet Secretary, appointed 15 people to the e-mobility task force on Friday, August 4, to develop regulations for the manufacture, sale, and use of electric vehicles.

The CS appointed Daniel Ngumi as chairperson, who will lead the task force, with human rights activist Jerotich Seii serving as vice chair.

David Mutisya, Anne Nyaga, Augustine Kenduiwo, Chris Mugo, Zacharia Lukorito, Judy Chepkirui, Javan Odenyo, EdwinsMukabanah, Hesborn Mose, and Githaiga Weru are also members of the 15-member committee.

Strathmore University Energy Research Centre (SERC)’s Ibrahim Kinyanjui, Meshack Ochieng, and Izael DaSilva rounded out the list.

Murkomen assigned the team the task of creating a National e-Mobility Policy, as well as an e-Mobility Strategy and Implementation Plan.

When the Ngumi lead team’s term in office expires in 20 days, they will be expected to report on e-Mobility Legislation and Regulations, e-Mobility Guidelines, and Regulatory Impact Assessment.

“In the performance of its tasks, the task force shall regulate its procedure and may co-opt any persons as it may consider necessary or expedient for the proper performance of its functions,” Murkomen said.

He also expects the appointees to examine the impact of e-Mobility on the long-term viability of the Road Maintenance Fuel Levy Fund, which is funded by pump prices.

The 15-member task force will also bring in experts as needed to carry out its mandate.

President William Ruto’s ambitious plan to increase the uptake of e-motorbikes and electric vehicles in the country within the next two years may soon become a reality with the formulation of the e-mobility framework.

“By the end of next year, we hope to have over 200,000 electric boda bodas.” We reached an agreement with some companies, which is why we have reduced five different taxes,” Ruto said when announcing the launch of electric bikes in July 2023.

Kenya has at least 2,000 registered electric vehicles, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Governor Sakaja Walks The Talk, Demolishes MCA’s Apartment

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja keeps his promise to protect public land real after ordering the demolition of a high-rise apartment building allegedly built on a grabbed land in Eastleigh.

On Friday, August 4, demolishers demolished the building, which was allegedly built by an unscrupulous businessman and a member of the County Assembly.

Residents complained to Sakaja after the local MCA took public land near Eastleigh Health Centre.

The politician allegedly conspired with another Member of the County Assembly who built the structure that Sakaja’s officials demolished.

Following the demolition, one of the local MCAs accused Sakaja of intimidation and claimed that the county government was on a witch hunt because he exposed fraud and embezzlement of funds.

However, Subcounty Medical Officer Dr Miriam Etole emphasised that the county was mandated to protect public land, especially institutions key in providing health services.

“Eastleigh Health Centre is one of the Public Health Facilities within Kamukunji Sub-County located on three plots along Fourth Street and Muyuyu Lane Eastleigh Second Avenue.

“The facility offers Curative, Maternal Neonatal Child Health Services, Maternity as well Sexual and Gender-Based Violence response unit,” Subcounty Medical Officer Dr Miriam Etole reiterated.

Etole claimed in a letter to the Nairobi County Government’s Health Facilities Chief Officer that the MCA demolished a structure on the hospital’s land before constructing his flat.

“The sub-county medical officer reported that the facility housed the ward administrator’s offices, and the Eastleigh Airbase MCA had requested to set up his office there.” During the Christmas holidays, however, the MCA gained access to the building and demolished it, leaving residents without a health centre,” Etole added.

Sakaja has consistently emphasised the importance of addressing land grabbing within the city and protecting critical government infrastructure.

Shock As Sleuths Discover Grave-Like Spots In A Kisumu Church

During a search operation at the Coptic Holy Ghost Church in Kisumu, managed by Father John Pesa, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations discovered gravelike sites.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 4, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) stated that the DCI will exhume the graves in the coming days as investigations into the church’s operations continue.

The ODPP and DCI searched the church after the pastor was accused of detaining sick people.

“During the operation, two grave-like spots were discovered on the grounds behind the church, and three suspected sick victims were rescued and taken to the hospital for medical assessment and treatment,” stated ODPP.

“This is in response to a court order that granted the investigating agency authorization to conduct the exercise following several complaints that people with mental disabilities were being illegally held within the church premises,” the ODPP added.

Detectives also suspect that some mentally challenged patients died and were buried without a permit on the church grounds.

Pesa, on the other hand, claimed that all patients present at the church came willingly to seek healing, with some being released after feeling better.

He also claimed that the authorities unfairly targeted him in the absence of concrete evidence and were afraid of going after other churches that house the sick.

“Sick people are brought here for healing, and some, after healing, return home, including those with mental illnesses,” he explained.

Pesa has recently come under fire for allegedly illegally detaining mentally ill patients under the guise of healing them.

It was also claimed that he chains patients to prevent them from escaping.

The agencies’ search comes just days after senators visited the church as part of their ongoing investigations into the proliferation of religious organizations.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on the other hand, insisted that the government would respect the independence of the church even as President William Ruto’s task force investigated the proliferation of religious organizations.

Anti-Gov’t Protest Deaths in Kenya Spark Outrage as Excessive Police Force Comes Under Scrutiny

Written by/// LISA NYAMBURA MURIMI

In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed a surge in anti-government protests, fueled by growing discontent over various socio-economic and political issues.

Tragically, these demonstrations have taken a dark turn, with reports of numerous deaths, causing outrage among citizens who blame the police for using excessive force.

The situation has put the government under intense scrutiny both locally and internationally.

Protesters have taken to the streets to voice their concerns about issues such as corruption, lack of access to essential services, human rights abuses, and the overall governance of the country.

While these demonstrations reflect the frustration of the masses, they have been met with a heavy-handed response from law enforcement.

Numerous reports and videos circulating on social media show incidents of police using tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition against the protesters, resulting in several fatalities.

The deaths have ignited a public outcry, with citizens demanding accountability for what they perceive as brutal tactics by the police.

Human rights organizations like Amnesty International in conjunction with the Law Society of Kenya and The Kenya Medical Association, have also raised serious concerns about the alleged use of excessive force and have conducted investigations.

The preliminary reports show a total of 23 deaths recorded and 41 people were injured in Nyanza and Western region since the anti-government protests began in March this year.

The government has responded by promising to investigate and take appropriate action against any officer found guilty of misconduct.

As the situation unfolds, Kenyan society finds itself at a critical juncture, balancing the right to peaceful protest with the imperative for law enforcement to maintain order.

The deaths during these demonstrations have shed light on the need for reforms in policing and a deeper examination of the grievances driving citizens to the streets.

Only through open dialogue, transparency, and a commitment to human rights can Kenya hope to find a path towards resolution and progress.
