CS Owalo: Gov’t Won’t Force Kenyans To Get Digital ID’s

Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and Digital Economy, has stated that no Kenyan will be forced to obtain the new Digital Identity cards.

Speaking on Monday while giving the Ministry’s One-Year Status Report, Owalo assured Kenyans that the choice of whether to access government services physically or digitally will be left to them.

According to the CS, digital IDs will be critical in storing individuals’ bio-data as well as reducing the movement and congestion of people in and out of government offices.

“Let me also clarify that when it comes to pass (the implementation of digital IDs), we will not force any Kenyan to take a digital identity. No, the onus will be on you to decide whether or not you want to get government services through your digital identity based on your bio-data or you want to physically visit government offices,” he said.

Owalo cited the success of Digital Identity Cards in various parts of the world.

“We have done quite a bit of benchmarking; it has happened in Estonia, it has happened in Belgium, it has happened in Pakistan, it has happened in India, these are based case global examples that we can benchmark with and Kenya can in no way be an exception in this regard,” the CS remarked.

Owalo dispelled the notion that Digital IDs are similar to Huduma Number cards, explaining that the latter were designed to facilitate the development of an electronic population database, whereas Digital IDs store individuals’ bio-data.

On May 24, at the seventh ID4Africa Augmented General Meeting in Nairobi, President Ruto announced the introduction of the Digital ID, which he described as an upgrade to the current national identity card.

In addition, Owalo addressed a recent attack on the eCitizen platform, assuring Kenyans of the security of their data.

“The recent case we had was not a hacking of the eCitizen platform. It was an attempted attack. But since we had an elaborate risk mitigation mechanism, it was unsuccessful. I want to assure Kenyans that their data is secure. That incident did not lead to infringement of personal data,” Owalo said.

Governor Mutula Offers To Mediate Between Raila-Ruto Talks

A day after former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo agreed to lead a 10-member committee in facilitating talks between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, Makueni governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has urged political hardliners on both sides of the political divide to support peaceful resolution talks to resolve the country’s political differences.

Mutula claims that many lives have been lost and that the economy is suffering, requiring immediate intervention.

“We are not in this country as guests. Kenyans are watching us; we need to stop trading barbs because our people depend on how we talk to each other. We won’t have investors coming to Kenya if we continue in this direction,” said Mutula.

He said all leaders from both sides of the government should support negotiations.

“Let us reason together. The only way is to let these two leaders sit down and talk. We have lost 4 young people, the two who were killed during demonstrations in Machakos were hailing from Makueni then the other two-Emali, and Wote shooting incident,” he added

The first term Wiper governor said Kenyans need peace for economic growth.

“The campaign period is over and we are no longer in politics. If these two leaders fail to reach a consensus, then, I, Mutula, I’m ready to sit them down and find a solution,” Mutula offered for his arbitration.

Mutula went up against Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi (Agriculture), MPs Rindikiri Mugambi (Buuri), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), and businessman James Mbaluka, all of whom have stated openly that they will oppose any attempt to bring the two together at a table.

“I can’t sit down with a person I defeated in an election. We have also told the president he should not sit down with the people he floored in the election. This will not happen, he lost because he didn’t have any vision for this country,” said Mugambi.

Musyoka on his bid said Ruto should keep off any efforts to have talks with Raila Odinga, “In the same vein I can’t sit down for any talks with the people I beat in the last election is the same way the president shouldn’t allow it to happen to him.”

The Cabinet Secretary urged Kenyans to avoid protests and instead work in agriculture, stating that subsidised fertiliser was being distributed to all parts of the country ahead of the upcoming short rains.

“Economy will not be revived by placing sufurias on your heads in streets but in your shambas,” said Mithika as he flagged off three trucks full of fertilizer for Mbooni sub-county.

The leaders spoke at Ndoo Secondary School, Tulimani, Mbooni during a funds drive.

Five Killed In Suspected Illegal Mining Gang Violence In S.Africa

Five people have been shot dead in South Africa’s Johannesburg in suspected violence between rival illegal mining gangs, police said Sunday.

The five bodies, believed to be of illegal miners, were found near an abandoned mine shaft clsoe to a slum in the suburb of Riverlea west of Johannesburg.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that two rival groups of the illegal miners were shooting at each in the area” police said in a statement.

Police have opened an investigation into the killings and have appealed the public with come forward with any information.

With an unemployment rate of more than 32 percent, South Africa counts thousands of illegal miners nicknamed “zama zamas” (“those who try” in the Zulu language).

The Johannesburg region is dotted with slag heaps, shafts and deep trenches left by generations of miners, whose arrival in a gold rush in the 1880s led to the birth of the city.

Access to these old mines is controlled by gangs of zama zamas.

In September last year, local media reported that at least seven illegal miners were shot and killed near the same slum.

Death Toll Rises To At Least 10 In Thai Warehouse Explosion

The death toll from a powerful explosion that levelled an unlicensed fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand rose to at least 10 on Sunday, the local governor said, as police sought the owner on charges of negligence.

The blast Saturday afternoon in the town of Sungai Kolok was believed to have been caused by welding during construction work on the building.

More than 100 people were injured in the blast, which left only twisted metal beams still standing as rescue workers picked over the debris, with local media reporting hundreds of homes were also seriously damaged.

“We have identified 10 people and found parts of two bodies which we cannot identify yet,” Narathiwat provincial governor Sanan Pongaksorn told a press conference Sunday.

“We are sending to forensics to do DNA tests but primary reports said they were different (people),” he added.

Sanan had previously said the blast was believed to have been caused by a “technical error” during welding.

Police on Sunday said they were still investigating the cause, adding they believed the facility was not licensed to store fireworks.

Provincial commander Police Major General Chalermporn Khamkhiew said firecrackers had been delivered shortly before the explosion.

“We are investigating if those firecrackers were transported legally or illegally,” he said.

“As of now, we do not see any licence for possession of firecrackers or firecracker sales,” he said.

“We assume the factory has no licence.”

The blast detonated roughly 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of gunpowder, he said, leaving two holes roughly two metres deep and six metres (20 feet) wide.

“We have issued a summons to the owner of the factory with the charge of negligence, which caused the accident,” said Colonel Suthawet Thareethai, police chief in Muno district.

“We are waiting for him to come.”

Officials said a command centre had been established not far from the scene, and authorities had already received 365 complaints from those who had been injured or had their homes and property damaged.

Damage to government offices and private schools was also reported, they added.

– ‘Nothing left’ –

Police said that of the 115 people injured in the blast, 106 had been discharged. The condition of those remaining in hospital was not known.

A fire sparked by the explosion was brought under control late Saturday.

On Sunday, residents surveyed the wreckage where their homes once stood as officers and emergency crews sifted through the rubble.

“I have nothing left,” said Samsueya Chuenchompoo, whose house was destroyed.

“I don’t even have a roof over my head now. When there was a flood, I still could survive but now I really have nothing left.”

Another affected resident, Sudarat Nooliteh, said her home had disappeared.

“I have no place to sleep. I have no food. I have no money,” she said.

Southern military commander Lieutenant General Santi Sakhutanark said the army would “provide manpower and equipment” for the recovery and clean-up operation.

Explosions at workshops producing firecrackers and other pyrotechnics are not uncommon in Thailand.

Saturday’s deadly blast comes just five days after 11 people were reportedly injured when a fireworks factory exploded in the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The Southeast Asian kingdom also has a poor safety record in the construction sector and deadly accidents are common.

Last month two people were killed when a bridge under construction in Bangkok collapsed onto traffic.

Nkunku Scores Again As Chelsea Win Summer Series

Chelsea won the Premier League Summer Series pre-season tournament as they beat Fulham 2-0 at FedEx Field in Maryland, Washington.

A 20th-minute Thiago Silva header from a Ben Chilwell corner opened the scoring.

A tap-in from Christopher Nkunku just before half-time after good work from Carney Chukwuemeka sealed the win.

It was Nkunku’s third goal of pre-season following the French striker’s £52m move from RB Leipzig.

Fulham did not provide much of an attacking threat although Calvin Bassey, playing for the club for the first time since his £19m move from Ajax, headed over from a corner in the second half.

One negative for Chelsea was when defender Trevoh Chalobah had to be substituted after receiving treatment for a knock on the pitch.

That potential injury will be a worry for new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, with fellow centre-back Benoit Badiashile not set be fit for the start of the Premier League season.

Chelsea have, however, reached an agreement to sign defender Axel Disasi from AS Monaco for 45m euros (£38.57m).

Victory means Chelsea have won the first Premier League Summer Series – the pre-season tournament also featuring Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, and Newcastle – without losing a game.

Aston Villa 3-3 Brentford

Matty Cash of Aston Villa celebrates with teammate Moussa Diaby
Diaby scored nine Bundesliga goals for Bayern Leverkusen last season

Earlier in the day, Aston Villa and Brentford played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the same stadium.

Brentford took the lead after Ezri Konsa brought down Kevin Schade in the box and Bryan Mbuemo scored the penalty.

Josh Da Silva then made it 2-0 an excellent curling effort from the edge of the box into the top corner past Emiliano Martinez.

But Villa surged back with three goals in a frantic 10-minute period.

Konsa got the first after he picked the ball up inside his own half and dribbled into the Brentford box before slamming the ball high into the net past Mark Flekken.

French winger Moussa Diaby, who scored on his debut against Fulham three days ago after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £51.9m, cut inside the box and shot to make it 2-2.

Matty Cash completed the turnaround in the first half when he cut back inside fired low into the net.

Brentford midfielder Shandon Baptiste scored the game’s sixth goal in the 67th minute after Keane Lewis-Potter smashed a curling shot against the bar and Baptiste was on hand to follow up.

Man Utd To Make Greenwood Decision Before Season Starts

Manchester United will decide striker Mason Greenwood’s future before their opening Premier League game of the season against Wolves on 14 August.

A number of serious charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped on 2 February.

The Crown Prosecution Service said key witnesses had withdrawn and new material had come to light.

It meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.

At the time, a statement released on 21-year-old Greenwood’s behalf said he was “relieved”.

However, United then said they were launching their own investigation.

Greenwood has been unavailable for selection ever since and has not been involved at the club’s Carrington training ground. His United contract runs until June 2025.

Asked about the situation at the start of United’s current tour of the United States, manager Erik ten Hag said he had given his opinions on the matter but it was for others at the club to decide.

It is understood that process is now near its conclusion, with an announcement anticipated at some point ahead of the Wolves game.

Onana Rants At Maguire In Man Utd Defeat

New Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana showed he will bring more to Erik ten Hag’s team than ball-playing ability during a 3-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old Cameroon keeper, who came on at half-time, has a reputation for letting rip at team-mates.

And he had a furious rant at Harry Maguire after a slack pass to Christian Eriksen gifted Dortmund a chance.

Onana denied Sebastian Haller then raced from his goal to berate Maguire.

The former United captain kept his counsel, which is more than could be said of fellow defender Brandon Williams, who got involved in a slanging match with Tom Heaton, who started in goal as United’s three-match tour of the United States ended in defeat in front of 50,857 at the Allegiant Stadium.

Williams had been responsible for Donyell Malen cancelling out Diogo Dalot’s excellent opening strike, but took exception to being blamed by Heaton for Dortmund’s second goal, barely a minute later, when Victor Lindelof gave the ball away.

Heaton seemed to suggest Williams had been too slow getting out and had played Malen onside. Williams evidently disagreed, making his feelings known in industrial terms.

Antony equalised for United but another defensive error, this time from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who gifted Dortmund possession close to the penalty area, ended with Youssoufa Moukoko scoring the winner.

It was a sobering evening for 18-year-old Omari Forson. Given his fourth pre-season appearance, the Londoner had impressed until he got involved in a head-to-head confrontation with Karim Adeyemi.

Ten Hag was concerned enough about the situation to venture on to the pitch. Bruno Fernandes complained to the fourth official as Dortmund continued to niggle away at the young midfielder, whose concentration had evidently been affected.

Amad Diallo missed the game with a knee injury that still requires an assessment and the Ivory Coast winger was noticeably limping as he left the stadium.

It is anticipated 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo will be out for an extended period with the ankle injury he sustained in the 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid in Houston on Wednesday.

Christian Eriksen making a pass under pressure from Marcel Sabitzer

Eriksen looking forward to Hojlund arrival

After starting their pre-season campaign with three successive victories, United have now lost two games in a row.

They still have two more matches to play, against Lens at Old Trafford on Saturday and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday, before they open their Premier League campaign against Wolves at Old Trafford on 14 August.

By that point, United hope to have completed the signing of Eriksen’s Denmark team-mate Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A outfit Atalanta in a deal that could eventually cost £72m.

“We don’t get enough media attention in Denmark – that’s why people outside Denmark don’t know enough (about Hojlund),” said former Tottenham and Inter Milan midfielder Eriksen.

“He’s a nice guy and a good player. He’s developed a lot in the last year from when I first saw him with the national team. Now he’s a strong number nine.

“I haven’t seen that many games for Atalanta, but I know how they play and he fitted in well there.

“I spoke to him when we were with the national team last time. Of course, I’ve said a lot of good stuff and also said some bad stuff.”

Saint-Maximin Leaves Newcastle To Join Saudi Side Al-Ahli

French winger Allan Saint-Maximin has left Newcastle United and joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli on a three-year deal, both clubs said on Sunday.

“We pick the best, and he’s one of them,” Al-Ahli posted on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter.

The clubs did not disclose the transfer fee for the 26-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Nice in 2019.

Saint-Maximin, 26, will team up with former Premier League players Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy and Riyad Mahrez at Al-Ahli.

Saint-Maximin was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the United States, with manager Eddie Howe saying the club had to sell a player during this window due to Uefa’s Financial Fair Play Regulations.

The Public Investment Fund, which is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, owns 75% and 80% of Al-Ahli and Newcastle, respectively.

Saint-Maximin joined a growing list of high-profile names to move to the Middle East, with Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Ruben Neves among those following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to Al-Nassr in January.

Chelsea Agree To Sign France Defender Disasi From Monaco – Reports

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign France defender Axel Disasi from Ligue 1 side Monaco, British media said on Sunday.

The 25-year-old is set to move to Stamford Bridge in a deal reportedly worth 45 million pounds ($49.58 million) and will be another option to cover for injured compatriot Wesley Fofana.

Disasi is expected to compete for the centre back position with the likes of Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill, while another Frenchman Benoit Badiashile is preparing to return from a hamstring injury early in the season.

Fofana is likely to miss much of the season after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery in July.

Disasi has four caps and was first called up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making his France debut in the 1-0 group stage defeat by Tunisia.

Chelsea are looking to revive their fortunes under new manager Mauricio Pochettino after coming 12th in the standings last season – their worst finish since 1994.

Dortmund Down Sloppy Man United In Vegas Friendly

Borussia Dortmund punished Manchester United’s defensive lapses on Sunday as the English Premier League giants wrapped up their North American tour with a 3-2 defeat to the Bundesliga side in Las Vegas.

A second-half strike by Dortmund substitute Youssoufa Moukoko proved the difference in an entertaining clash at the Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.

United manager Erik ten Hag named a virtual reserve team to start, leaving the likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and new signing Mason Mount on the bench.

Yet United’s makeshift starting XI were more than a match for Dortmund in the first half, dominating for long periods before Diogo Dalot handed the Red Devils the lead on 24 minutes with a long-range strike.

But Dortmund turned the game on its head in the closing minutes of the first half, with two goals in a minute from Netherlands international forward Donyell Malen.

The first came when United’s defense failed to close down Karim Adeyemi’s burst down the right.

Despite the attention of a cluster of United defenders, Adeyemi was able to square for Malen, who hooked in from close range.

Malen grabbed his second a minute later, this time seizing on a United howler when Victor Lindelof lost possession inside the area trying to pass out from the back.

United were lucky not to go 3-1 down in the opening minutes of the second half, when another defensive slip, this time by Harry Maguire, allowed Sebastien Haller a shot on goal.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana saved and then watched in relief as Adeyemi blasted the follow-up wide with the goal gaping.

United did get back on level terms in the 52nd minute, when Brazilian forward Antony swept home a low shot from inside the area after a botched clearance by Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels.

Ten Hag rang in the changes with 30 minutes remaining, with Rashford instantly providing more of an attacking threat.

But it was Dortmund who scored the decisive goal, with veteran Marco Reus working a clever opening to set up Moukoko for the winner.
