ODM Condemns Julius Malema Statement On Maandamano

Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has criticized South African opposition politician Julius Malema for condemning Kenyan protests.

ODM reacted angrily to Malema’s comments that anti-government protests were disrupting Kenya and destabilizing the country’s peace, claiming that the Economic Freedom Fighters party leader had succumbed to Kenya Kwanza’s “propaganda” about the demonstrations.

Raila’s party, according to ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, is fighting for a more accommodating democratic space, accusing President William Ruto of entrenching a dictatorship in Kenya.

“It is clear that Comrade Malema, watching Kenya from a distance, is not familiar with the delicate sociopolitical fault lines in our nation, and makes the faulty assumption that his approach in fighting injustices in South Africa can be replicated here,” Sifuna begins the letter.

He noted that Kenya’s problem was that those involved in the struggle had never risen to power as a result of circumstances that stifled free will.

“If Comrade Malema lived in a nation perennially led by collaborators and former home guards, thieves and liars, who not only steal elections at will but routinely send police to shoot unarmed civilians in a re-enaction of South Africa’s own Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 or the Marikana Massacre of 2012, he would hold different views,” the Nairobi senator said.

On Saturday, during the EFF’s 10-year anniversary, Malema continued his attack on Raila and his coalition’s demonstrations.

“We want to make a call in Kenya, especially to Comrade Raila Odinga. Stop doing what you are doing. Do not disrupt Kenya… President William Ruto was democratically elected in Kenya,” Malema said in a stinging speech that also highlighted the socialist struggle with which the EFF identifies.

Ruto: Yes, I Met Raila For Talks

President William Ruto has admitted to meeting with opposition leader Raila Odinga and has given conditions for their negotiations.

Ruto stated that Kenya is a democratic country and that no leader should orchestrate violence that results in loss of life and property destruction.

“It will not continue that there are leaders either present, past or future that will plan violence that will lead to killings and destruction of property or destroy businesses,” he said.

He stated that he is open to discussing anything else but cannot negotiate Kenyans’ safety.

He also reacted angrily to critics who questioned the absence of the cost of living as a topic to be discussed during the negotiations.

“The cost of living cannot be addressed through how they are proposing to hold demonstrations and causing violence”

“The government is implementing development projects in the blue economy and housing sectors to create jobs for the youth and prevent them from participating in protests.”

Some of Ruto’s allies urged him not to engage in negotiations with opposition leaders that are not focused on the interests of ordinary mwananchi.

Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary, stated that the opposition wishes to internationalize their election loss and create a crisis where none exists.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, as well as House Speakers Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi, urged the President not to meet Raila and instead focus on implementing his agenda.

Members of Parliament, including Mwangi Kiujuri, Gonzi Rai, Chiforomodo Mangale, and Tita Taveta, also urged Ruto not to engage in negotiations that are not in the best interests of Kenyans.

Worldcoin: Why Kenyans Are Scanning Eyeballs For ‘Free Money’

Worldcoin, launched on July 24, offers users free tokens (WLD) by scanning their eyeballs using machines in 35 countries, including Kenya.

These tokens can be transferred to official crypto exchanges like Binance and used to buy other cryptocurrencies.

On Thursday and Friday, youths in their hundreds flocked to supermarkets and malls to have their iris scanned for free money.

The first 25 WLD tokens would translate to about Sh7,786. One Felix Wambugu, a matatu conductor rider, said he earned Sh6,461 after signing up and scanning his iris.

He then used the free tokens to buy USDT, another cryptocurrency, which he then sold to get Kenya shillings.

“Hii ni pesa ya bure and what they want is to scan my iris. Iam okay with that. But if you ask me, I just got 6,400 today which i didn’t have yesterday!”

Worldcoin aims to provide everyone with a verified digital identity, free cryptocurrency tokens, and a crypto wallet.

The platform is co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT’s developer OpenAI, and aims to create a digital currency that is more inclusive and accessible to people worldwide, regardless of their socio-economic status or access to traditional banking systems.

The “proof of personhood” through retinal scans is necessary to verify a user’s identity.

World ID codes are saved on a decentralized blockchain, and the company claims they cannot be duplicated or spoofed to create false identities or engage in fraud.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has issued a statement urging Kenyans to exercise caution while engaging with Worldcoin and sharing their personal data.

The ODPC’s statement calls for vigilance from the public as they interact with Worldcoin’s data-processing activities

Privacy and cryptocurrency advocates warn Worldcoin’s utopian biometric technology plan has dystopian implications, potentially leading to privacy problems and undermining the pseudonymous spirit of cryptocurrencies.

They argue that the proposal is a solution in search of a problem.

Do Not Disrupt Kenya – South Africa’s Malema Tells Raila

Julius Malema, the leader of South Africa’s opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has once again called on Raila Odinga to accept defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

Speaking Saturday in Johannesburg during the party’s 10th Anniversary rally, the South African opposition leader opined that presidential candidates in Africa should not relive harrowing past experiences characterized by an election’s aftermath of brutal violence.

“We want to make a call to Kenya, especially to comrade Raila Odinga. Stop doing what you are doing. Do not disrupt Kenya. We need peace in Kenya. The President William Ruto was democratically elected in Kenya. I will not allow you to use the people of Kenya to destabilize the peace of Kenya,” Malema said.

Malema’s hard-hitting message to Raila comes a day after the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka said they will announce the next cause of action after last week’s anti-government protests against the high cost of living.

The coalition canceled protests that were scheduled for Wednesday to hold candlelight vigils in honour of people killed or injured by police during the protests.

While Azimio leaders say at least 50 people were killed and hundreds of others injured during the demonstrations, official records indicate 20 were killed.

The Raila Odinga-led outfit has been organising nationwide protests since March across the country last week to demonstrate against the high cost of living, reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, and the raid of opposition parties by the government among other issues.

On Saturday, Azimio and the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition announced plans to form a ten-man team to resolve their political differences.

US Secretary Of State Blinken Holds Talks With Ruto Over Regional Crisis

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday said that he engaged President William Ruto in talks to advance shared interests between Kenya and the US.

Blinken said among the issues discussed included ending the conflict in Sudan and advancing the East African Community-led talks on eastern DRC.

“Spoke today (Sunday) with President Ruto of Kenya to advance shared priorities, including ending the conflict in Sudan and advancing East African Community-led talks on eastern DRC,” he said in a post.

Ruto has been spearheading mediation toward the restoration of democratic rule in the troubled Sudan.

The Sudanese army has however rejected Ruto’s role in the process.

The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have engaged in a fight that broke out on April 15, and despite receiving multiple international mediation offers, none have succeeded in ending or even significantly pausing the conflict.

Earlier this month, IGAD, an East African regional bloc of which Kenya is a member, proposed an initiative that would include the deployment of peacekeepers in the capital Khartoum.

The Sudanese army has accused Ruto of supporting the RSF.

It has said it would consider any foreign peacekeepers as enemy forces.

Conflicts have also been experienced in eastern DRC as Consultative Technical Team meetings involving various stakeholders of the region’s Peace Process have been held to discuss various issues highlighted in the Luanda and Nairobi processes.

The sessions have majorly discussed matters of cantonment and confidence-building measures, among them warring parties in the eastern part of DRC.

Facilitated by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, the technical team has aimed at finding lasting peace solutions to the conflict.

Wagner-Backed CAR Leader Asks Voters To Abolish Term Limits

Wagner, which has troops and business interests in the country, is providing security for the referendum.

The main opposition has called for a boycott of the referendum, accusing President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of wanting to become president-for-life.

Mr Touadéra has grown ties with Russia since French forces withdrew in 2022.

His supporters say that constitutional limits on presidential terms are “uncommon” in the region. The say the proposed changes will help achieve stability and development.

The CAR has been plagued by rebellions and coups for decades. A powerful coalition of rebel groups has been trying to oust Mr Touadéra.

On Wednesday, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin said hundreds of its fighters had arrived in the resource-rich country as part of “a planned rotation before the referendum”, according to the Afrique Media website linked to the Russian group.

It quoted Mr Prigozhin as saying that, “we control the territory of CAR. We are convinced that the gangs will not be able to harass the population”.

A UN peacekeeping in CAR is also providing security for the referendum.

But Wagner is increasingly seen as the main group on which Mr Touadéra’s government relies to remain in power, and to fight rebels.

Wagner group has had at least 1,000 forces in CAR since 2018. The group has also developed huge business interests in the country.

It reportedly trades in the minerals and timber industries.

Earlier this week, Mr Prigozhin was photographed shaking hands with Ambassador Freddy Mapouka. Mr Mapouka, a CAR presidential advisor, was in attendance at the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg.

France, the former colonial power, pulled its last forces out of CAR in 2022. It first sent about 1,600 troops to the country after a coup in 2013 unleashed a civil war.

As CAR moved to restore democracy, Mr Touadéra was elected president in 2016 and won a second term in 2020.

But he has been accused of becoming increasingly authoritarian. His critics further say the referendum is the latest sign of his attempt to extend his power.

If the changes to the constitution are approved, it would allow Mr Touadéra to seek a third term in 2025.

It would also raise the presidential term from five to seven years and allow the president to appoint more judges to the Supreme Court.

Kericho County On Spot Over Misappropriation Of Sh13.7M Raised For Victims Of Londiani Accident

Kericho Deputy Governor Fred Kirui has requested that authorities investigate county government officials for the misappropriation of Sh13.7 million raised for Londiani junction accident victims.

According to Kirui, only Sh5.7 million of the money raised on July 4 at the Londiani stadium reached the families of the victims.

Each of the 53 families who lost a loved one in the accident received Sh90,000, while those who were injured received Sh60,000.

According to a document shared with the media by the DG, Sh3.5 million was paid to Kericho County Referral Hospital and Londiani Sub-County Hospital.

Governor Erick Mutai stated during the fundraiser that the county government would cover the hospital and mortuary bills.

Sh2.9 million was paid to a tent company, another Sh411,000 to another company for the provision of tents in a Kericho hotel, and Sh100,000 for a lunch for 100 people.

The County Public Service management received Sh423,000 for transportation, refreshments, and printing.

In the document, the County Commissioner was also given Sh300,000 for fuel, lunch, and team allowances.

Was DP Gachagua Cornered By President Ruto Meeting Raila?

Details are emerging that President @WilliamsRuto may have met Raila in Mombasa in a bid to cool temperatures.

DP Rigathi Gachagua has been in Europe until Saturday, when he flew in. Meaning the President snooked Gachagua, who has variously ensured no handshake talks take place.

Uncomfortable news to Riggy G. But the fact that his war dog, Kimani Ichungwah has been tamed points to dwindling fortunes for the second most powerful man.

Raising the question: Did the system and deep state set up Gachagua to commence a political war on Uhuru, only to abandon him?

The straw that broke the camel’s bank was the attack on Jomo Kenyatta…over a botched gun-running activities.

It emerged from Ichungwa statements that even the state did not know the number of guns Jomo Kenyatta had in his house.

Ichung’wah talked of 20 guns. Osoro 100. Each claiming that Jomo Kenyatta II was responsible for the killing of Demonstrators in riots.

It later emerged through retired President Kenyatta that the Government had refused to protect Jomo, after dad retired from office.

Then there was the peace prayers in Kalonzo’s house. Attended by Uhuru. Did they add pressure for hand, leg shake or talks?

President William Ruto took the command of Kenya Defence Forces alone. No DP Gachagua. No first lady.

Uhuru was aptly striped of that role when his ADC officially took over the command of Ruto’s overall chief aid job.

Uhuru lapsed to a retiree, entitled only to police protection. No more Kenya Airforce round-the-clock surveillance

Meaning? The President of the Republic of Kenya is the senior most KDF Commander first. And a Politician second, owing to the path that he used to access office.

That is why the institution of the Republic of Kenya supersedes political interest of the day. And why the President is the custodian.

For this reason alone, the President is above the law. Until the day he retires. Was somebody trying to box Uhuru to commit a crime so that the little Hague matter can be revisited?

Co-Hosts New Zealand Out Of Women’s World Cup

Tournament co-hosts New Zealand were knocked out of the Fifa Women’s World Cup as Switzerland got the draw they needed to advance as Group A winners.

New Zealand began the day in second position in the group, but Norway moved above them thanks to a convincing 6-0 victory over the Philippines.

Jacqueline Hand hit the post for New Zealand but they could not get the win they needed to stay in the competition.

They become the first host nation to fail to make it past the group phase.

It was a tame and disappointing end to the tournament for New Zealand, who had beaten Norway 1-0 in the World Cup’s opening match.

A shock 1-0 loss on Tuesday in Wellington against the Philippines, the lowest ranked nation in Group A, left New Zealand’s qualification in the balance, although their fate was still in their hands before their final match in Dunedin.

But, in a game they needed to win, they failed to have a single shot on target in the opening 70 minutes against Switzerland.

With the Europeans themselves only one goal away from elimination, it became tight and tense with neither side able to create many clear-cut opportunities.

Tearful and disappointing end to New Zealand’s campaign

A number of New Zealand players were in tears at the final whistle, with their team eliminated on goal difference.

This was the country’s sixth appearance at a Women’s World Cup, but they had not won any of their previous 15 matches before Hannah Wilkinson scored the only goal in their 2023 opener as they beat Norway in front of a crowd of 42,137.

But the loss to the Philippines, a side ranked 20 places below them, was the one that proved crucial.

New Zealand, 26th in the world, did not give their supporters much to cheer about against Switzerland as they had to wait until the 74th minute to see the hosts have their first shot on target – a weak effort from Malia Steinmetz straight at Swiss goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann.

The Football Ferns then had a tame header on target from Claudia Bunge, before eight minutes of injury time.

New Zealand goalkeeper Victoria Esson went up for a corner and two free-kicks, getting her head on one of the free-kicks, only to send her effort well off target.

But the hosts could not get a goal as Switzerland hung on to move into the last 16 for the second time, after also doing so in their previous appearance in 2015.

They will play the runners-up in Group C, the losers of Monday’s Spain v Japan game, in the first of the knockout matches on Saturday, 5 August.

Barca And The Woodwork Defeat Real In Texas ‘Clasico’

Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-0 in a fiercely contested friendly match on Saturday with an early strike from Ousmane Dembele and late goals from Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres.

The result was harsh on Carlo Ancelotti’s team, who struck the woodwork five times and created plenty of opportunities. But Spanish champions Barcelona’s more clinical finishing proved to be the difference.

A packed AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’S Dallas Cowboys, witnessed a game which had all the passion and commitment of a real derby despite being a pre-season warm-up.

The crowd were soon on their feet when Oriel Romeu rattled the Real cross-bar with a thundering drive in the fourth minute but Barca soon had their fans celebrating.

A cleverly worked free-kick saw Pedri slide a diagonal pass into the path of Dembele, who expertly drilled the ball into the far corner.

Real had a great chance to get level just five minutes later when Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo handled in the box but Vinicius Junior blasted the penalty against the bar.

The action was non-stop as Rodrygo then forced Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a fine, full-length save with a free-kick that was flying towards the top corner.

The woodwork denied Real again when Vinicius struck the bar and although Jude Bellingham outjumped ter Stegen, the midfielder’s header hit the post.

At the other end, Dembele had a chance for a second after a mistake from Ferland Mendy allowed him to break through on goal, but the French forward’s soft shot was easily dealt with by Thibuat Courtois.

Tempers flared after a sliding challenge from behind from Frenkie de Jong on Eder Militao, with players from both teams scuffling on the half-way line and halftime likely came as a relief for American referee Allen Chapman.

Real’s bad luck continued after the break with Aurelien Tchouameni blasting against the bar while Vinicius continued to torment from the left, poking a shot from a tight angle just wide.

There was no let-up from either side, despite multiple substitutions, but Barcelona’s finishing proved to be the difference with substitute Fermin Lopez making it 2-0 with a brilliant blast from outside the box in the 85th minute after being set up by Sergi Roberto.

Incredibly, Vinicius, after a jinking run in from the left, struck the bar again with his drive from a tight angle and Barca wrapped up the win in stoppage time.

Ferran Torres, ran on to a lofted ball from Lopez, lifted the ball over the advancing Courtois and showed good awareness and balance to turn and slot the ball into the empty net.

COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez admitted the scoreline flattered his team.

“The result could have been different, the result is a bit misleading, Madrid also had many chances and we shouldn’t be overconfident,” he said.

“The result is very favourable but it doesn’t mean we played a super match. There are many things to improve. It was a very even match in which Madrid also had many chances,” he said.

Xavi also questioned whether he had enough depth for the upcoming season.

“I think Madrid have a much bigger squad than us. At the end of the game they were taking players out and they have many players in the midfield, physical, technical, they have a wide range of possibilities,” he said.

“We tried to play and impose our game and in many moments we succeeded. I am satisfied with the way we competed and in many moments we looked like what we want to be,” he said.

Ancelotti also played down the scoreline and was pleased by many aspects.

“The result is the least important thing. It hurts to lose, but I’ll keep the good things we did,” said Ancelotti.

“We were good in terms of intensity, we had a lot of chances that didn’t go in. Five (against the woodwork) in a game is quite rare, I don’t think it has ever happened to me. But it’s better if it happens in pre-season,” added the Italian.
