Major Japanese Corporation Sojitz Eager to Invest in Kenya

In an effort to deepen their investment in Kenya, a delegation from the Sojitz Corporation visited the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) to look into new areas of partnership.

Since it began making investments in several African nations in the 1920s, Sojitz has made a significant impact on the continent.

Its history began with the opening of its first office in Mombasa in 1926 with the goal of selling Cotton and Soda Ash to Japan.

The business most recently increased its reach in 2020 when it established Sojitz East Africa Limited in Nairobi.

Tokyo, Japan is home to Sojitz Corporation, a sogo shosha (general trading companies).

It is involved in a wide range of companies both domestically and abroad, including the purchasing, selling, importing, and exporting of items, the production and sale of goods, the provision of services, and the planning and coordination of projects both in Japan and abroad.

The seven divisions of Sojitz the Automotive Division, the Aerospace and Transportation Project Division, the Infrastructure and Healthcare Division, the Metals, Mineral Resources and Recycling Division, the Chemicals Division, the Consumer Industry and Agriculture Business Division, and the Retail Consumer Service Division are responsible for the company’s operations.

President Ruto: Africa Must Invest In Its Human Resource For Growth

Africa must strategically invest in its workforce if it is to grow.

President William Ruto said the continent is presented with gifted human capital that can drive its transformation.

He noted that Africa must fix itself in a lane that will see the exploitation of the skilled, educated and productive manpower.

This move, he explained, will sustainably accelerate the continent’s economic growth.

“We must — jointly with other countries and partners— design a sound framework that will consciously nurture and invest in human capital that yields high returns.”

He said he was convinced that if Africa pursues the right mix and sequence of policies, it will overcome traditional and emerging crises.

“But we will also have a chance to transform our population explosion and youth bulge into a demographic dividend,” he argued.

The President said this will help position Africa as the young, green continent of the future and the global driver of a new industrial revolution.

He was speaking on Wednesday at The Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar Es Salaam during the Africa Heads of State Summit on Human Capital.

Under the theme: “Accelerating Africa’s Economic Growth: Boosting Youth Productivity by Improving Learning and Skills”, the event was hosted by President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu.

It sought to reactivate the timely investments in education and health to drive productivity, stimulate jobs creation and unlock Africa’s immense untapped economic potential.

Presidents Lazarus Chakwera (Malawi), Julius Maada (Sierra Leone), Filipe Nyusi (Mozambique), Carlos Vila Nova (São Tomé and Príncipe), Andry Rajoelina (Madagascar), Prime Ministers Gervais Ndirakobuca (Burundi), Félix Moloua (Central African Republic), Hamza Abdi Barre (Somalia), Vice Presidents Jessica Rose Epel Alupo (Uganda), Mutale Nalumango (Zambia), World Bank Regional Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa Victoria Kwakwa, among others, were present.

President Suluhu asked Africa to amplify investments in social services such as education and health to improve productivity.

She said there was a danger of the continent being occupied by the crises it is facing and overlook investments in key areas such as the workforce.

“Yet, this is Africa’s greatest asset; hardworking, multi-talented and industrious.”

The golfers are drawn from the Nakuru and its environs, including Njoro, Kericho, Nandi and as far as Nairobi, Kisumu, Kakamega and Kisii.

“This tournament provides an excellent opportunity to connect and interact with them. We are pleased with the large number of participants, as we also aim to showcase golf talent from different parts of the country,” said Dr. Kennedy Nyakomitta, Director of Sales at DTB.

The second leg of DTB’s “Bank with Us” golf tournament was held in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, which saw the home player Harun Ndegwa crowned the overall winner with 40 points.

This year’s first DTB “Bank with Us” golf tournament was held in April at Sigona Golf Club in Kiambu.

Teachers Receive Reduced July Salaries Instead Of An Increase

Teachers have been affected by National Social Security Fund (NSSF) deductions on their July salaries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 27, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Vihiga County, along with other unions such as the Union of Kenya Civil Servants (UKCS), lodged complaints about this issue.

“We have learned that all our members have suffered an NSSF deduction to the tune of Sh 360. This deduction has come at a time when our members were eagerly waiting for the 7 to 10 percent increase in their basic salary as promised by His Excellency President William Ruto last month,” KUPPET said in the statement.

The majority of the affected teachers stated that approximately 6% of their take-home pay was missing.

The new NSSF Act now requires a monthly contribution of 12% of one’s monthly salary. Six percent of the employee’s salary is deducted, while the remaining six percent is paid by the employer.

The updated NSSF Act is one of the ways President William Ruto’s administration proposes to increase Kenyans’ savings in the Finance Act 2023.

“I know there is a proposal by the SRC for the increase of salaries for different cadres of both civil servants and other public servants. They have made a recommendation to us that they want to increase salaries of civil servants by an average of between 7 and 10 percent; that is from office assistants all the way to people who serve below the PSs,” said the President on June 30 during the unveiling of digital government services at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC).

Sabala Inyeni, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET in Vihiga, stated in the statement that teachers do not appreciate the government’s numerous savings schemes that purport to provide a better retirement package while subjecting them to untold suffering during their service.

‘Ultra-Rare’ Apple Sneakers On Sale For Ksh.7.1M

When you think of Apple, it’s likely that what first springs to mind is a conveyor belt of revolutionary tech rather than a pair of sneakers.

But a pair of “ultra-rare” Apple sneakers is now being sold by auctioneers Sotheby’s for $50,000 (Ksh.7.1 million), fetching a higher price tag than any current Apple product.

Complete with the rainbow Apple logo on the tongue and side, the white trainers were custom-made for the company’s employees as a one-time giveaway at a National Sales Conference in the mid-1990s.

“Having never reached the general public, this particular pair of sneakers is one of the most obscure in existence,” Sotheby’s said in its catalog.

Although producing sneakers is unusual for Apple, in 1986 the tech brand released a range of clothing and accessories dubbed “The Apple Collection,” featuring mugs, umbrellas, bags, keyrings and even a sailboard, all emblazoned with the rainbow Apple logo, according to a catalog published that year. The previous year, 22,000 people bought Apple shirts from the company.

These were known as “white label products” – manufactured by a third-party company such as Lamy, Honda or Braun, but sold by Apple using its own branding and logo.

The size 10.5 trainers are new in their box and come with a pair of red laces, Sotherby’s said, but they show some signs of aging including yellowing around the midsoles and glue as well as light marks on the toe boxes.

This pair of sneakers is not the first vintage Apple product to have sold for an eyewatering sum in recent months.

A first-edition 2007 iPhone sold for more than $190,000 at auction last month, far exceeding the auctioneer’s estimate, while a pair of old Birkenstock sandals owned and worn by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs fetched $200,000 at an auction in November 2022.

Jesse, King Of Maasai Mara, Dies In Tragic Rivalry Battle

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is in mourning after a renowned nomad lion, Jesse, was found dead following a vicious battle with other male lions.

It is tragic news that has left the wildlife conservation community, tourists and researchers devastated as they mourn the majestic animal.

According to a statement by the Mara Predator Conservation Programme (MPCP), rangers from the conservancy stumbled on the wounded lion who had been beaten to death by others.

The team quickly responded to the scene and identified the deceased big cat as Jesse, one of the park’s magnificent lions who was born in early 2011.

“Jesse was born in the Cheli pride in MNC and MPCP first got to know him when he was still a youngster within his pride,” it reads in part

Jesse and his brother Frank left the Cheli pride in 2014 and went ahead to successfully raise one set of offspring during their Offbeat pride tenure.

The statement further revealed that although all the sons sired by Jesse and Frank have either died or gone missing, their daughters are successfully continuing the Offbeat pride.

Jesse had to vacate the Offbeat pride when Frank went missing in 2016, forcing him to lead a nomadic life and lived as a nomad until his death.

“He was seen several times in Naboisho and Olare-Motorogi conservancies, and the National Reserve. Jesse eventually ventured back to MNC towards the beginning of 2023,” the statement continues.

He ended his days where he started as a pride male, in MNC’s Offbeat area, after the fatal fight with the current Offbeat males, the Engoyanai males most probable over territorial control.

Brilliant Bellingham Off The Mark As Madrid Down United

Jude Bellingham scored the first goal of his Real Madrid career as the Spanish giants defeated Manchester United 2-0 in a pre-season friendly in Houston on Wednesday.

English midfielder Bellingham, who joined Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in a $114 million transfer in June, opened his account with an exquisite finish after just six minutes.

Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger caught the United defence napping with a superbly weighted ball that sent Bellingham bearing down on goal.

The 20-year-old took one touch to control and then lifted a delicate chip over on-rushing United goalkeeper Andre Onana to give Madrid a deserved lead.

Brazilian international Vinicius Jr. might have doubled the Madrid lead shortly afterwards but scuffed his shot from eight yards out to let United off the hook.

United, meanwhile, almost got back on level terms after 36 minutes, but Marcus Rashford was just unable to find the target from a tight angle.

With Madrid in control, United’s frustration boiled over shortly before halftime when Lisandro Martinez clattered into Bellingham with a wild tackle. Bellingham reacted angrily and Martinez earned a booking for the challenge.

After a flurry of changes at halftime United looked improved after the break, but Madrid created the better chances, with Militao almost making it 2-0 on 69 minutes only to see his shot cleared off the line.

Madrid finally made the game safe in the 89th minute, with Lucas Vazquez crossing for veteran forward Joselu to light up the NRG Stadium with a stunning overhead kick for 2-0.

Arsenal Down Barcelona In Eight-Goal Thriller

Leandro Trossard bagged a second-half brace as Arsenal twice came from behind to defeat Spanish champions Barcelona 5-3 in a pre-season friendly in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Belgian international Trossard netted in the 55th and 78th minutes as the English Premier League runners-up completed an emphatic victory at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The start of an entertaining encounter at the home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams was delayed by 30 minutes after Arsenal’s team bus was held up in traffic en route to the stadium.

When the game finally kicked off, Barcelona began the brighter, with Moroccan forward Abde Ezzalzouli producing a scintillating run down the left flank to set up the Catalans’ opener.

Ezzalzouli’s cross was met by Raphinha, whose first-time shot was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but only as far as Robert Lewandowski, who rammed in the finish in the seventh minute.

Arsenal however were swift to respond, with England international Bukayo Saka grabbing an equalizer in the 13th minute after a defensive lapse by Barcelona centre-half Andreas Christensen.

Saka missed the chance to fire Arsenal into the lead from the penalty spot on 22 minutes, the winger screwing his shot wide of the post after Ronald Araujo had handled in the area.

Barca however regained the lead just after the half-hour mark, with Raphinha’s long-range free-kick deflecting off Martin Odegaard in the Arsenal wall to deceive Ramsdale.

Odegaard made amends just before halftime however, flicking on to Arsenal’s new signing Kai Havertz, for the forward to jab in the finish from close range.

Arsenal dominated for long periods of the second half, with Saka missing a golden chance to put the Gunners ahead early in the second half, shooting over from five yards out with the goal begging.

Arsenal’s pressure finally told though with Trossard scoring in the 55th and 78th minutes to make it 4-2.

Ferran Torres scored a late consolation for Barcelona in the 88th minute to give the Catalans a glimmer of hope, but Fabio Vieira made certain of victory with a long-range strike a minute before fulltime.

Couple Burned To Death At Home As Toll Mounts From Mediterranean Wildfires

Two elderly people found burned to death in their home in Italy are among at least 40 people killed as wildfires rage across huge swaths of the Mediterranean.

Countries including Italy, Greece and Algeria are deploying thousands of firefighters to battle the devastating fires, which have been fueled by scorching temperatures and strong winds.

The highest death toll is in Algeria, where wildfires ripped through 11 provinces in the North African nation, killing at least 34 people, state broadcaster EPTV News reported Monday, citing the country’s interior ministry and local groups. Ten of the victims were soldiers, Reuters reported.

More than 8,000 firefighters have been deployed to control the blazes as residents living near forested areas were evacuated, according to EPTV.

The situation now appears to be under control, according to Algeria’s Civil Protection services, which said that it has managed to contain all wildfires, in a statement on Wednesday.

Italy, one of the countries hardest hit by extreme heat in Europe, is battling 10 fires in the south of the country including blazes in Sicily, Calabria, Abruzzo and Puglia, where 2,000 people were evacuated from three hotels on Tuesday evening.

The fires claimed at least four lives on Tuesday, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

A 98-year-old man died as flames reached his home in the coastal city of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy, according to ANSA.

In Palermo in Sicily, two people in their 70s were found burned to death in their home near Palermo and an 88-year-old woman died when an ambulance called for her was blocked by the fires.

In some parts of Sicily, temperatures reached 47.4 Celsius (117.3 Fahrenheit) on Monday, edging close to the European temperature record of 48.8 degrees Celsius, set in 2021.

Italy’s meteorological agency said that temperatures will dip slightly over the coming days in the south before climbing again towards the weekend.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday that the fires and extreme weather disasters are putting the country “to the test.”

She came short of announcing a state of emergency in the country as many regions are demanding, tweeting that the government had “deployed all the means at its disposal.”

Further west, in parts of Portugal and southern Spain, emergency teams struggled to contain wildfires on Wednesday as residents were evacuated from the affected regions.

Outside the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, on Wednesday morning over 500 firefighters remained at the scene of a wildfire that broke out in the Cascais area, according to Portuguese public broadcaster, RTP. Firefighters remained at the scene after the fire was contained.

In the Spanish municipality of Tejeda on Gran Canaria, a forest fire broke out on Tuesday in an area where 200 hectares of land had already burned down, according to Spanish public broadcaster, RTVE.

In Greece, the fire service said 61 new wildfires ravaged parts of the country amid sweltering temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

The country’s fire service said on Wednesday that new blazes prompted evacuation orders in some parts of the cities of Lamia and Volos, after nearly 20,000 people were evacuated from homes and tourist resorts in Rhodes over the weekend.

The carbon emissions from the blazes are the highest in the past two decades, according to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). Around 1 megaton of carbon emissions was recorded from July 1 to July 25, CAMS said, adding that the wildfires are expected to affect the air quality in the region.

Maria Feggou, a volunteer with the Hellenic Red Cross fighting the blaze in Rhodes, said that the situation is difficult to describe. “Half of the island is in flames, and it seems uncontrollable,” Feggou told CNN on Tuesday.

In Evia, two pilots aged 27 and 34 died when their aircraft crashed during a firefighting operation over the island, the Greek Air Force said in a statement. Greece’s armed forces announced three days of national mourning.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at a government cabinet meeting on Tuesday that the fires were “a tough test” for the country. He warned that “things will probably get worse, not better, with warmer temperatures, more drought, stronger winds.”

The Greek weather agency has warned of rising temperatures in some parts of the country, while the island of Crete has been placed under a state of alarm for extreme risk of fire.

In Turkey, forest wildfires ignited Monday night in the southern Mediterranean province of Antalya, according to Antalya Municipality’s statement.

Antalya’s Mayor Muhittin Bocek said Tuesday, “Our efforts to extinguish the forest fire that broke out last night in Antalya’s Kemer district continue.”

Bocek said 180 hectares of land were affected and the fire was hard to bring under control due to the steepness of the area and the strength of the winds, according to the statement.

A total of 10 homes near the fire were evacuated as a precaution. Six people are being treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Turkey’s state media Anadolu.

Fires have also broken out in Croatia, south of the city of Dubrovnik, according to the Croatian fire service. Around 130 firefighters and two aircraft have been battling the fires, which are now under control, the fire service said in a statement on Wednesday.

Scientists are clear that the kind of extreme weather, which is causing destruction across swaths of the Mediterranean, will become more frequent and more severe as long as the world continues to burn planet-heating fossil fuels.

Without the human-caused climate crisis, Europe’s searing heat wave, which has baked several southern European countries and primed the land for wildfires, would have been “virtually impossible,” according to a report on Tuesday.

Comedian Chipukeezy Hospitalised, Itumbi Gives Update
