Twitter Challenger Threads Struggles For Traction

After a wildly successful first few days, Thread’s popularity has waned in the weeks since Meta launched its challenge to Twitter, which lives on despite its problems.

The average amount of time people spend on Threads daily has plummeted more than 75 percent since the platform made a rock star debut on July 6, according to data from Sensor Tower, a market analysis firm.

Threads was quickly billed as a potential death knell for Twitter, a platform that has tumbled into chaos under the leadership of mercurial tycoon Elon Musk.

The launch saw sign-ups of more than 100 million users in less than five days, smashing the record of AI tool ChatGPT for fastest-growing consumer app and creating relief and excitement amongst early adopters fleeing Twitter.

“I actually closed down my Twitter account after starting Threads,” said Brooklyn resident Lauren Brose, head of marketing at a tech start-up.

“I used to love Twitter. After Elon Musk took over Twitter, I found that the entire environment just changed completely.”

But weeks later, Threads has since seen a “material decline in new sign-ups,” Sensor Tower said.

Twitter continues to dominate its space as a platform for online comment and news, and Musk “would have to completely destroy it” to drive away its audience for good, according to Silicon Valley investor and analyst Jeremiah Owyang.

“Will Threads kill Twitter? Absolutely not. It’s just not equivalent,” he said.

Threads went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at its launch, though it is not available in Europe because parent company Meta is unsure how to navigate the European Union’s data privacy legislation.

Twitter is thought to have around 200 million regular users but it has suffered repeated technical failures since Tesla tycoon Musk bought the platform last year and sacked much of its staff.

Musk, also the boss of SpaceX, has alienated users by introducing charges for previously free services and allowing banned right-wing accounts back on the platform.

There is little doubt that Threads had a major leg up compared to other wannabe Twitter alternatives.

Several rivals have emerged but most are niche platforms without the capacity to grow at the necessary scale to dethrone Twitter.

But Meta was able to easily prompt Instagram users to start Threads accounts, tapping into a base of at least a billion users at the image-focused social network.

Not about news?

Threads has a lot to prove, and features to add, to become a formidable Twitter alternative, according to Insider Intelligence analyst Jasmine Enberg.

It needs to foster creators to engage users, and to find its own identity separate from Instagram and Twitter, Enberg said.

“Given that Twitter is in a state of disarray, the brilliant move that they did was using the existing social graph from Instagram for rapid and seamless adoption,” Owyang said of Threads.

The downside is that’s not the user base “that you want to have chats with or to do microblogging,” he added.

Instagram users typically engage with the service for images or videos, not commentary or controversy, Owyang noted.

“It is a very different crowd on Instagram,” Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said of a comparison to Threads.

Twitter is known as a forum for news and politics, topics that Threads has no interest in spotlighting, according to a recent post by Threads and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri.

Meanwhile, Twitter is seen as an established home for posts by journalists, celebrities, athletes, politicians and others.

Another roadblock to Threads growth is that Meta is holding it back from the European Union, Milanesi said.

“You are missing a big chunk of the market,” she said of Threads being absent from the EU.

Twitter ‘diaspora’?

While people frustrated with Musk-owned Twitter are seeking alternatives, no single competitor has established itself as the ideal option.

Twitter quitters have become a “diaspora” of sorts, spread across Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads and other platforms in search of a new social media home, Owyang reasoned.

“Many people have left Twitter, and that will continue,” Owyang said.

“But the issue is where are they going? There’s no one centralized place to go.”

The Threads app has been downloaded more than 184 million times globally since its launch, according to Data.ai Intelligence.

“But, the app hasn’t proved to be materially different from Twitter in terms of features/functionality,” said Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Abe Yousef.

“What should dissuade people from remaining on Twitter, assuming they’re comfortable with Twitter’s content policies?” Yousef added.

I Will Not Change As Man Utd Captain – Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has vowed not to change his ways after being appointed as Manchester United’s permanent captain.

Fernandes led United for the first time since taking over from Harry Maguire in Saturday’s pre-season win over Arsenal.

Former United captain Gary Neville called Fernandes “a disgrace” for his behaviour in the 7-0 defeat by Liverpool in March.

“The manager liked my discipline and passion and everything I give,” midfielder Fernandes said.

Erik ten Hag excused Fernandes for his petulant behaviour against Liverpool, with Fernandes saying before the FA Cup final in June that he felt he owed the Dutchman for standing by him.

However, Fernandes is adamant he will not change, even if that means on occasion he gets it wrong.

“The manager chose me because of what I was doing last season and the way he worked with me,” the Portugal international said.

“I don’t see why I should change. You have to be as natural as you can.

“Sometimes I can be wrong and it is not in the best way, but there are big players in the dressing room. Everything I say to them is because I think they can do big things.”

Fernandes said Ten Hag gave him no advance warning of his decision to name him as Maguire’s successor.

“My feeling was that I would like it to be me, but I didn’t hear anything,” Fernandes said.

“The manager wanted to tell the team together.”

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have not even competed for the Premier League title or the Champions League, let alone actually won one.

“Manchester United has to fight for everything,” Fernandes said. “This club deserves that.”

But he accepts another forward is needed, especially given the continued injury issues experienced by Anthony Martial, who was not involved in the 2-0 victory against Arsenal in New Jersey.

“With Wout (Weghorst) gone, we are missing a striker,” Fernandes said.

“Anthony is still not fit so we have only one player for the striker position. The club knows and the manager knows we need more people in that position.”

Silva Has Saudi Offer But ‘Is Committed To Fulham’

Fulham boss Marco Silva has confirmed he has received an offer to manage in Saudi Arabia – but refused to say whether he has turned it down.

The Portuguese coach was reportedly offered a £40m deal to take charge of Al-Ahli and told reporters an offer had been made.

When pressed on what his answer had been, the 46-year-old would not say.

However, he stressed: “My commitment for the club [Fulham] is clear and it will continue.”

He added: “I have shown my commitment to this club last season so many times.

“I will not talk about the situation. I don’t come here to talk about offers and these situations.”

Mitrovic ‘not working properly with team-mates’

The interest from Saudi Arabia is not limited to Silva.

Last week, Fulham rejected a £25m bid from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Mitrovic is keen to move to Saudi Arabia and has so far not played for Fulham in pre-season. Silva confirmed that the 28-year-old would not be part of the team to play Brentford in their first pre-season match in the Premier League Summer Series in Philadelphia on Sunday.

“It is not the ideal scenario, not because he received an offer. It is all the situation about himself,” Silva said.

“As you know, he is not going to play tomorrow, he didn’t play last Wednesday, he is not working properly with his team-mates, and when I say it is not the ideal scenario, this is the situation.”

Interest from other clubs has also been shown in Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha. “About the rumours or interest in our players, I think all of you know as well about Joao Palhinha and some of the others that didn’t come out. That is a normal situation,” Silva continued.

“When it came out of my control as a manager, that is something that I would like to have a different scenario.

“I have spoken with Mitro already. He knows my opinion. I am here to give the best for my players, to protect them as I can. Sometimes you have individual decisions that it is for them to take.”

With Mitrovic unavailable, it leaves Silva with tough decisions to make surrounding his squad, and the Fulham boss is frustrated with his club’s dealing in the transfer market as they look to push on from last season’s creditable 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

“For me, I have much more things in my mind that Mitro, believe me,” Silva said. “The situation is just more than one player. We lost seven players from last season.

“The main ones are here and luckily they are still under me but when we lost such a big number of players and we have to prepare a Premier League season and you didn’t sign at least one, at least to make the fans a little bit more happy with the situation, this is the biggest situation for me.

“We want to complete our squad. I would like to build quicker from last season – the great success we had last season – and to prepare well our squad.

“[In] the last two weeks it has been great work for all the players but it is not enough to prepare for a competition like the Premier League.”

Villa Sign France Winger Diaby From Leverkusen

Aston Villa on Saturday completed the signing of France winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth a reported €60 million.

Diaby, 24, becomes Villa’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres.

Diaby has 10 France caps but was not part of the squad that reached the World Cup final in Qatar in 2022.

Having come up through the ranks at hometown club Paris St Germain, Diaby moved to Leverkusen in 2019.

He scored 49 goals in 172 appearances for the Bundesliga side before completing his switch to Villa Park.

Man Utd Beat Arsenal In US Friendly

Manchester United gained bragging rights over rivals Arsenal as first-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho sealed a 2-0 friendly win at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The match was played in front of a stadium soccer record crowd of 82,262.

Fernandes celebrated being appointed United’s new captain by beating Aaron Ramsdale from 20 yards, although the Arsenal keeper could have done better.

And Sancho doubled the advantage with a powerful shot into the top corner.

The winger, playing as a false nine in an outfield line-up manager Erik ten Hag changed completely at half-time, finished after speeding on to a mistake from Gabriel.

However, it was not all good news for United, who lost forward Amad Diallo to injury minutes after his introduction at the interval.

Arsenal created a number of chances but failed to find the net, including Gabriel’s late header which was deflected wide.

Asked for the lessons he learned from the match, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said simply: “That I hate to lose, that we all hate to lose.

“I don’t like the feeling I have right now.”

Towards the end of the game some fans started throwing punches at each other in the stand behind the United goal, although the altercation was quickly resolved.

After the final whistle, the two teams took part in a penalty shootout – with both managers having decided their players needed to practise in front of a crowd.

United won that too, 5-3, after Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira skied his effort over the bar.

Sancho gets on scoresheet

The stadium commentator must have been provided with the wrong information about United’s number 25, announcing his name as “Jadon Sanchez” twice after his goal, before eventually correcting himself.

Yet, in a way, that faux pas underlined Sancho’s own struggles since joining United.

The winger had a poor first season at Old Trafford and then last term a superb pre-season was followed by inconsistency when the important action started.

Sancho then had a complete break from the game when his hopes of going to the World Cup came to a crushing end with his omission from England’s September internationals.

The 23-year-old is one of those players United would probably sell, save for the fact they would get nothing like the £73m they paid Borussia Dortmund for him.

Sancho has talent though. Of that there is no doubt. He also has lots of pace.

The Londoner showed both as he seized on a loose ball after Gabriel miskicked in the 37th minute and must have covered 40 yards at top speed before smashing his strike into the top corner.

Playing in a false nine role and with Anthony Martial again on the injured list, Sancho could save United some money if ongoing negotiations with Atalanta over Rasmus Hojlund continue to frustrate.

Arsenal fail to fire

The £200m recruitment drive Arsenal have been on this summer means Arteta has options that did not exist last season.

With the exception of striker Gabriel Jesus and currently injured full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, the Gunners’ starting line-up looked like the one with which they could start their Premier League campaign.

While the scoreline did not go in their favour, they would have been in front but for a superb double save from Tom Heaton to deny Gabriel Martinelli – and the defensive error for United’s second was one of those rare mistakes that cannot be predicted.

By the time he had made two lots of changes in the second half, Arteta had swapped almost two-thirds of his team, yet the quality remained.

Eddie Nketiah should have done better after being fed through a quickly-taken free-kick, while Kai Havertz headed Martin Odegaard’s cross over when well placed.

“Physically, it’s been really demanding,” Arteta said.

“With some players we wanted to expose them a little bit more than they have done because of the way we want to build the physical state.”

In theory, Arsenal are now preparing for a meeting with Barcelona in Los Angeles on Wednesday, although they will travel to the west coast on Sunday in the knowledge the Catalans had to call off their game against Juventus due to a virus sweeping through the camp.

PSG Treatment Of Mbappe Criticised By Union

Paris St-Germain have been accused of “moral harassment” after leaving Kylian Mbappe out of their pre-season tour of Asia, and the French footballers’ union said it could take legal action.

PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer has told the club he will not extend his contract, which has 12 months left.

The club want to sell Mbappe, 24, now to get a fee but Mbappe plans to stay until the end of his deal.

The France forward cost PSG £165.7m following his 2017 move from Monaco.

After Mbappe was left out of the PSG squad going to Japan and South Korea, a National Union of Professional Footballers statement said: “These players must enjoy the same working conditions as the rest of the professional workforce.

“The UNFP feels it would be useful to remind managers that putting pressure on an employee – via the deterioration of their working conditions, for example – to force them to leave or accept what the employer wants constitutes moral harassment, which French law firmly condemns.

“The UNFP reserves the right to take civil and criminal action against any club that behaves in this way.”

Mbappe has been a key player for PSG for six years, scoring 212 goals in 260 games, and winning or sharing the past five Ligue 1 Golden Boots.

He helped France win the 2018 World Cup and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final defeat by Argentina.

He had been widely expected to join Real Madrid for free at the end of his last deal in 2022, but surprised nearly everyone by signing a new two-year deal at PSG.

After deciding he will not extend that deal any more, PSG believe he cannot remain part of their playing group.

Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi has said it is “impossible” that Mbappe will be allowed to leave for free in 2024.

Former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique replaced Christophe Galtier as manager of the Ligue 1 champions this summer.

Pochettino Hails Jackson As Chelsea Beat Brighton

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says new striker Nicolas Jackson will need “time to adapt” to the Premier League after an impressive performance in their pre-season win over Brighton.

The 22-year-old scored once and registered two assists as the Blues came from behind to beat Brighton 4-3.

The Senegal international joined Chelsea from Villarreal in June.

“This type of game is important to him to feel what it means to play in the Premier League,” Pochettino said.

Christopher Nkunku cancelled out Danny Welbeck’s early strike for Brighton in Philadelphia, before Chelsea scored three goals in 11 minutes from Mykhailo Mudryk, Conor Gallagher and Jackson.

Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 60th minute, but the 10 men rallied.

A penalty from Joao Pedro and an 89th-minute strike from Deniz Undav ensured Brighton pushed the Blues all the way.

Jackson scored 13 goals in 38 appearances for Villareal last season, including nine in their final eight league games.

He registered an assist against Wrexham in Chelsea’s first match of their USA tour.

“I think when Chelsea sign a player like him it’s because they detect something important in quality and talent,” Pochettino said.

“He is a big talent, he needs time to adapt to the new club, the Premier League.

“He is young also, we need to help him to develop and evolve and be an important player for Chelsea.”

Nkunku, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig for £52m last month, has now scored in both pre-season games.

Asked if Nkunku and Jackson, who have alternated in the number nine role, could start together, Pochettino said: “For sure, we will arrive in the next few games at the possibility to play them together.

“It is that the circumstance of the physical condition mean we need to use both to share the minutes.”

A fresh start for Mudryk?

Mudryk has struggled to hold down a starting place since arriving at Stamford Bridge for £89m in January.

The forward joined up with Ukraine for the European Under-21 Championships to try and regain some form and was rewarded with his first goal for Chelsea.

He volleyed in from the edge of the area after exchanging passes with Jackson, and looked an attacking threat all night with his pace.

“Attacking players need to score and need to get their confidence and trust in themselves,” Pochettino said.

“Always it is important to score goals. I think today with a little bit more capacity to stay calm, maybe we can create more chances and score more.

“We need to believe and trust in the process to arrive to the first Premier League game in the best condition.”

Colwill ‘can be best in England’

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi had spoken about wanting to sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill permanently after the Englishman spent last season on loan at the Seagulls.

The 20-year-old joined up with Chelsea following his European success with England Under-21s but gave away a penalty against Brighton.

Pochettino said afterwards that Colwill was “our player” and would continue with the Blues.

“His performance was good today, better than what I expected because it is only the first game with us after the season with Brighton,” the Argentine added.

“I am so happy, he can be one of the greatest centre-backs in England.”

Pope Francis Unveils Rev. Njiru As New Wote Diocese Bishop

Pope Francis on Saturday announced the creation of the Catholic Diocese of Wote, carved out from the Diocese of Machakos.

In the news published in L’Osservatore Romano, the daily newspaper of Vatican City, the head of the Catholic Church appointed Rev Paul Kariuki Njiru, who is the Bishop of the Embu Diocese, as bishop of the newly erected diocese.

Rev Njiru has 14 years of experience as a bishop and 30 as a priest. He described the appointment as a happy moment for the Catholic church in Wote, the Makueni County headquarters.

“It’s a happy moment for the Wote faithful who have waited several years for this moment since the days of late Bishop Kioko. They have matured in their faith,” Njiru told Citizen Digital.

The new Wote Bishop vowed to serve the community with humility, saying, “I will serve with humility and love and I am hopeful that together with the Wote Diocese members we will do great things.”

During Archbishop Bert van Megen’s visit to Kenya last month, Bishop Norman King’oo Wambua of Machakos called for the establishment of a new diocese in Wote on behalf of Makueni Catholics.

And in response, Archbishop Megen assured Makueni residents that the Pope was aware of the situation in Wote and would make a decision soon.

Makueni was hitherto the only of the three Ukambani region counties with no Catholic diocese.

The Kitui Diocese was erected in February 1956 while the Machakos Diocese was erected in May 1969.

China, Kenya Economic Ties Are A Win-Win Relationship

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi during a visit to Kenya on Saturday praised the two countries’ economic partnership as a “win-win”, according to a statement from the Chinese authorities.

Kenya and China have “become good friends with mutual trust in politics and good partners with win-win economic cooperation”, according to the statement from the Chinese embassy in Kenya.

With the most dynamic economy in East Africa, Kenya is considered by the international community as a stable democracy in a troubled region.

China is the second-largest donor to Kenya after the World Bank.

In Mombasa, on the Kenyan coast, China is financing the construction of a new terminal in East Africa’s largest port.

China has also loaned $5 billion  (4.7 billion euros) toward the most expensive infrastructure project in the country since its independence in 1963: a train line that since 2017 has connected the port city Mombasa with Naivasha, in the Rift Valley, via the capital Nairobi.

“The landmark project of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has completely changed the face of Kenya,” the embassy’s statement said.

Kenyan President William Ruto, elected last year, in a tweet, stressed “our commitment to strengthening the Kenya-China strategic partnership centred on infrastructure development, climate change”

But China is often accused of using its creditor status for gaining diplomatic or trade concessions, raising concerns about many African countries’ ability to assume the debts contracted.

China, the world’s number two economy, rejects practising “debt-trap diplomacy” as an unfair criticism from Western rivals who have themselves burdened nations with huge debts

Kenya’s economy is particularly burdened by debts of $70 billion, around 67 percent of its GDP.

After visiting Kenya, Wang will visit South Africa on July 24 and 25 ahead of the BRICS summit next month, a group that includes South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia.

Migori Governor Calls Out Police Brutality As Boy, 19, Succumbs To Gunshot Wounds

Written By Fredrick Akoko

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko has condemned the manner in which the police conducted themselves in the three days of demonstrations against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The Governor said that the police brutalised many people and meted injuries on them as they exercised their democratic rights and one person was shot dead yesterday during the protests.

The Governor said that the County Government will take care of the medical expenses of those injured and also offset the funeral expenses of the dead and called upon the residents to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.

He however commended the residents for not destroying any property at all and called for calm as they mourn and nurse the injured in the three days protests.

At the same time, the family of the slain 19 years old boy from Nyamware village is seeking justice for the slain teenager who was shot yesterday evening at Total area on the outskirts of Migori town during the demonstration.

The family spokesperson Victor Osumba said that they are surprised and saddened by the manner in which the police shot the boy from the back as he was alleged to be running away after doing his casual labours in Oruba estate.

The family claims that the teenager was not among the demonstrators as he was alleged to have been coming from his usual hustles in town and was caught in the thick of the protests.
