China, Kenya Economic Ties Are A Win-Win Relationship

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi during a visit to Kenya on Saturday praised the two countries’ economic partnership as a “win-win”, according to a statement from the Chinese authorities.

Kenya and China have “become good friends with mutual trust in politics and good partners with win-win economic cooperation”, according to the statement from the Chinese embassy in Kenya.

With the most dynamic economy in East Africa, Kenya is considered by the international community as a stable democracy in a troubled region.

China is the second-largest donor to Kenya after the World Bank.

In Mombasa, on the Kenyan coast, China is financing the construction of a new terminal in East Africa’s largest port.

China has also loaned $5 billion  (4.7 billion euros) toward the most expensive infrastructure project in the country since its independence in 1963: a train line that since 2017 has connected the port city Mombasa with Naivasha, in the Rift Valley, via the capital Nairobi.

“The landmark project of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has completely changed the face of Kenya,” the embassy’s statement said.

Kenyan President William Ruto, elected last year, in a tweet, stressed “our commitment to strengthening the Kenya-China strategic partnership centred on infrastructure development, climate change”

But China is often accused of using its creditor status for gaining diplomatic or trade concessions, raising concerns about many African countries’ ability to assume the debts contracted.

China, the world’s number two economy, rejects practising “debt-trap diplomacy” as an unfair criticism from Western rivals who have themselves burdened nations with huge debts

Kenya’s economy is particularly burdened by debts of $70 billion, around 67 percent of its GDP.

After visiting Kenya, Wang will visit South Africa on July 24 and 25 ahead of the BRICS summit next month, a group that includes South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia.

Migori Governor Calls Out Police Brutality As Boy, 19, Succumbs To Gunshot Wounds

Written By Fredrick Akoko

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko has condemned the manner in which the police conducted themselves in the three days of demonstrations against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The Governor said that the police brutalised many people and meted injuries on them as they exercised their democratic rights and one person was shot dead yesterday during the protests.

The Governor said that the County Government will take care of the medical expenses of those injured and also offset the funeral expenses of the dead and called upon the residents to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.

He however commended the residents for not destroying any property at all and called for calm as they mourn and nurse the injured in the three days protests.

At the same time, the family of the slain 19 years old boy from Nyamware village is seeking justice for the slain teenager who was shot yesterday evening at Total area on the outskirts of Migori town during the demonstration.

The family spokesperson Victor Osumba said that they are surprised and saddened by the manner in which the police shot the boy from the back as he was alleged to be running away after doing his casual labours in Oruba estate.

The family claims that the teenager was not among the demonstrators as he was alleged to have been coming from his usual hustles in town and was caught in the thick of the protests.

Moses Kuria: Reposition KDC Role In Innovative Credit Provision

Kenya’s Kenya Development Corporation (KDC) has committed to accelerating credit provision to spur economic growth and development through innovative financing mechanisms.

The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industrialization, Hon. Moses K. Kuria, emphasized the importance of leveraging its enterprise value as a Development Finance Institution to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

“The Government recognizes KDC is an Important enterprise value as a development finance partner in reviving the economy’s production. I have challenged them to redefine itself as a reputable Development Financial Institution (DFI) partner of choice and Kenya’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.”

The meeting brought together key stakeholders to explore opportunities for partnership in establishing credit lines that will facilitate onward lending to crucial sectors of the Kenyan economy.

KDC Board Chairman Hon. Dr. Sakwa Bunyasi emphasized the importance of this collaboration to enable KDC to provide financial resources to vital sectors of the economy.

The proposed credit lines will serve as a catalyst for economic progress, allowing KDC to facilitate access to affordable financing for key sectors that drive economic growth and employment in Kenya.

The partnership with development partners will help KDC achieve its mandate by providing the necessary funding to support SMEs.

KDC Director General Norah Ratemo said the credit line initiative will open up new avenues for collaboration, innovation, and collective efforts to address the socio-economic challenges Kenyan entrepreneurs face while trying to scale their enterprises.

The event also highlighted Kenya’s attractive investment opportunities for both local and international investors, with its strategic geographical location, conducive investment environment, predictable tax regime, and young and dynamic workforce making it a compelling investment destination for those seeking to positively impact the African continent.

New Zealand World Cup Squad Evacuated After Hotel Fire

New Zealand’s Women’s World Cup squad was temporarily evacuated from its hotel in Auckland on Saturday after a fire, the team said, but all players and staff were safe.

It was not immediately clear what caused it, but a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told AFP that there had been “multiple blazes” at the hotel, which have since been extinguished.

The spokesperson said some people at the hotel were treated for smoke inhalation but nobody was seriously hurt.

A member of the hotel staff told AFP that the upper floors were affected by smoke but the situation was quickly brought under control.

The fire service said it was not thought to be suspicious.

“New Zealand Football can confirm that the Football Ferns team and staff have been temporarily evacuated from the Pullman Hotel, their team base for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, due to a fire,” NZ Football said in a statement.

“All of the team and staff are safe and accounted for.”

New Zealand are co-hosting the World Cup with Australia and won the opening match of the tournament 1-0 against Norway on Thursday.

Duale Threatens To Use All Machinery In His Disposal To Flush Out Protesters

Defence CS Aden Duale has said the government will stop at nothing in ensuring ‘criminals’ causing mayhem during protests are flushed out.

Duale on Friday said there have been high levels of violence witnessed across the country in the past three days, adding that the activities could not be a result of spontaneous reaction by the protesters.

“It is a well-orchestrated and financed plot by known criminals, masquerading as political leaders and security personnel,” Duale said.

“Their scheme is to cripple government operations and portray the Police Service in a bad light. We are telling them that their days are numbered. If it takes breaking doors to flush them out, we will,” he added.

He was reacting to a statement by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki on a crackdown on criminals causing mayhem over protests.

This comes even as Kindiki assured that the state had contained the unrest witnessed during demos.

He said the country was back to normalcy, assuring Kenyans of their safety.

He advised all persons to carry on with their daily activities and leave their safety to the security officers.

On Friday, right groups asked the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to probe alleged cases of arbitrary arrests and mistreatment by police in the ongoing Azimio protests.

While expressing its concerns over alleged police brutality, the Civil society organizations said action ought to be taken against those involved.

Arteta Says Arsenal Midfielder Partey Staying At Club

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he expects midfielder Thomas Partey to remain at the Premier League club, despite uncertainty over his future.

The Ghana star was late joining up with the Gunners’ squad for their three-match tour of the United States.

Partey, 30, is one of several players being courted by Al Ahli from the Saudi Pro League.

After the £100m signing of Declan Rice from West Ham last week, it looked like Partey would be allowed to leave.

However, asked whether he expected the player to stay, Arteta was unequivocal.

“Yes,” he said. “Thomas is a super important player for us.

“Every time I had a conversation with him, he says he wants to stay with us. There is nothing there at all.”

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 after the Gunners activated his £45.3m release clause.

He featured in 33 Premier League games for the club last season, scoring three goals, as they finished runners-up to Manchester City.

The Slain Kilifi Chief Officer Rahab Karisa’s Widower Opens Up After Her Murder

The widower of the slain Klifii county chief officer for the Blue Economy Rahab Karisa, has written an emotional tribute to his wife, detailing what happened the night she died.

Maxwell Mmera, also known as ‘Mmera Senior’ on Facebook, wrote a post in which he claimed that the housekeeper accused of murdering his wife did so after being called out for stealing.

He wrote, “You didn’t deserve it, you that cannot hurt a fly, you didn’t. And your only mistake was, asking a housegirl who has stolen from you while you were away and mentioning to her that the following day you’d take her to the police. The brutal animal instead of just escaping peacefully, wakes up and stabs you while you are sleeping – that was so painful my love.”

Karisa is said to have returned to her Mnarani home in Kilifi from a work trip to Italy on Wednesday night.

Police said preliminary investigations established she was stabbed by her house help, who then fled.

In a tribute by Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, he said Rahab was a young, talented, and hardworking officer with a bright future.

He added, “According to the preliminary police investigation, Rahab was brutally murdered by her househelp. I am calling upon the security agencies to move with speed to arrest the known culprit to face the full force of the law.”

Meanwhile, Mmera, in his post, said he regretted allowing Karisa to make a career move away from him.

He wrote, “7 months down the line I am coming back to a lifeless, cold and dead you babe. We had plans for your comeback, great projects to achieve, and dreams of the future, but now what can I say except cry!!!”

The young family had two sons under five years old.

According to a previous post on his Facebook, Mmera was still grieving the loss of his mother, who passed on in 2016.

Mmera said his children will need therapy, adding that one witnessed the attack and told him, “Mama is Kufa, mama is fall down, mama has blood, mama is in hospital, I will fall down like mama….”

Their younger child is yet to understand that his mother is no more.
