PS Tanui gave a speech while touring Samasource, a business process outsourcing firm with more than 6,000 employees that is based in Kenya.

The government is keen on supporting the growth of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in the country as a way of creating employment, lowering poverty and increasing inclusivity said Information, Communication and the Digital Economy PS John Tanui.

The business process outsourcing (BPO) market in Kenya is one of the largest in East Africa and is a growing destination.

A young, highly educated workforce and an environment that supports tech-enabled services are what drive Kenya’s BPO industry, especially in Nairobi.

To ensure that the BPO industry, which offers multiple benefits, continues to grow and expand, the Kenyan government is intensely focused on the continuing skills development of its BPO labour force.

Azimio’s Lawyer Danstan Omari To File Application To Have Babu Owino Produced In Court

Azimio Legal team led by Danstan Omari intends to file an application seeking to have Embakasi East MP Babu Owino produced in court after his arrest early this morning.

Omari says he has instructions from Raila Odinga to file a habeas Corpus application because they don’t know the whereabouts of Babu and Raila private security Maurice Ogeta.

Others whose whereabouts remain unknown are Dennis Onyango, Hon. Ken Chonga, Hon. Teddy Mwambire, Hon. Wilfred Odallo, Hon. Redson Onyango, Eric Otieno and Anthony Otsyula.

The application states that the abducted lawmakers are ardent members of the Official Opposition in Kenya, to wit, the Azimio One Kenya Alliance and strong supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement Party Leader H.E. Raila Amollo Odinga.

Further, the application states that Babu Owino and the rest were on the 19th of July 2023 arrested at various places within Nairobi County and whisked to various destinations that are unknown to their family members, friends and acquaintances within the ranks of the official opposition of the government in Kenya.

“Before the unconstitutional, illegal and surreptitious abduction and forceful detention of the Applicants herein, they had every intention of participating in the three-day country wide demonstrations beginning the 19th July 2023 that have been called by H.E. Raila Odinga to pressurize the government of the day to lower the cost of living especially following the passing of the Finance Act,2023 that despite its operation being stayed by the Constitutional Court, its effects continue to pain Kenyans,” reads the application.

Azimio claims that the said members were last seen with police officers some of whom not only wore their official uniforms but also drove GK vehicles where they were bungled up and whisked to unknown and/or undisclosed locations.

Azimio submits that the state continues to unlawfully detain its members without the authority of the courts and knowledge of their whereabouts being known to their loved ones.

Kericho MCAs Walk Out Of President Ruto’s Function Over Claims They Are A ‘Security Threat’

Members of the Kericho County Assembly (MCAs) walked out of an event where President William Ruto was set to commission the Duka Moja and Kimugu water treatment plants on Wednesday.

The MCAs claimed that the president’s security and handlers ordered them to leave the project’s premises because they posed a’security threat’ to the Head of State.

Ruto had not yet arrived at the venue when the incident occurred.

“We were told that we are a security threat we move outside, and so we are moving out so that we give them space,” said one of the MCAs.

The Head of State is in Kericho for the commissioning of multi-billion Duka Moja and Kimugu water treatment plants.

The project which cost Ksh1.2 billion was funded by the National government and Lake Victoria South water works.

It is projected to produce 13 million litres of water per day. The waterworks are expected to supply fresh clean water to over 200,000 households and help reduce water shortage in the region.

The 50km distribution pipeline covers the areas of Kapsoit-Borborwet, Kapcheptoror-Kaptebeswet, Kakiptui, Kisumu road-Kapsoit and Kipchimchim-Ainamoi.

Onana Confirms ‘Irresistible’ United Move

Andre Onana said that he couldn’t the resist the chance to play at Manchester United as the Cameroon goalkeeper prepares to join the Premier League giants after one season at Inter Milan.

Onana is set to sign for United in a deal worth a reported Sh8.8 billion (55 million euros, $62 million) after joining Inter last summer as a free agent and starring in their run to the Champions League final.

In an interview with the Gazzetta Dello Sport published on Wednesday he confirmed his transfer to Old Trafford, saying he couldn’t wait to rejoin his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.

“I really want to begin this new exciting adventure with a coach who as far as I’m concerned is a maestro,” said Onana.

“I’m going to play in a great league and for a great club which has an enormous amount of history just like Inter.

“It’s important to be honest and tell the people the truth. I’m someone who’s always looking for new challenges and to play in the Premier League for a club like United is irresistible.”

Onana made a big impression at Inter and looked to be the perfect replacement for outgoing veteran Samir Handanovic.

Instead Simone Inzaghi’s team will again need to find a new main man between the sticks, one who is unlikely to have the 27-year-old’s ability to start moves with his impressive ball control.

Onana’s ability with his feet is one of the reasons why he is teaming up again with Ten Hag, who with Onana in goal and a team packed with rising young stars took Ajax to the semi-finals of the 2019 Champions League.

He will move to England after a thrilling campaign with three-time European champions Inter, an ever present in their charge to the Champions League final where they were narrowly defeated by United’s local rivals Manchester City.

He won the Italian Cup and Super Cup but the highlight of the season was undoubtedly beating AC Milan in the last four over two blockbuster matches which put Serie A back in the spotlight after years of decline.

“The San Siro and Inter fans made me feel something special and I won’t forget that for the rest of my life,” added Onana.

“For some matches we were really as one, I had the feeling of playing not as 11 players, but as 80,000. Being able to experience that was a privilege that football and my life have given me.”

Onana retired from international football last year with 34 caps after being dumped by Cameroon coach Rigobert Song at the World Cup for disciplinary reasons.

He was banned for 12 months by UEFA in February 2021 after testing positive for a banned substance, a punishment which was later cut to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Social Media Access In Ethiopia Back After 5-Month Shutdown

Social media networks like Facebook and Instagram were back online in Ethiopia on Wednesday after being blocked for five months, according to an internet advocacy organisation and an AFP journalist.

A service run by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), an association that tracks online censorship, showed that access to social networks in Africa’s second-most populous country was freely available after being shut down in early February.

An AFP journalist in Addis Ababa was able to access sites including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok without using a virtual private network (VPN), a mechanism that enables an internet connection from a different location.

OONI and other internet censorship watchdogs reported a social media blackout in Ethiopia since February 9.

But the government has not commented on the shutdown, and neither the government in Addis Ababa nor the state provider Ethio Telecom has responded to queries from AFP.

Amnesty International said the blockage followed calls for street protests by leaders of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church after a group of rebel archbishops created a dissident synod.

Planned demonstrations over the move were eventually cancelled after a meeting of church leaders brokered by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in mid-February, but social media sites remained offline.

Ethiopian authorities have cut or throttled access to the internet and social media platforms many times in recent years.

Between 2015 and 2017, connectivity was interrupted on a number of occasions by the previous government as it faced the largest street protest movement in 25 years.

Under Abiy, this tendency has continued.

The northern region of Tigray, the scene of an armed conflict with the federal government, was largely deprived of telecommunications for the two-year duration of the war.

Networks in Tigray have been partially restored since a peace agreement was signed in November 2022.

CS Mutua: UN Statement On Kenya Protests “Inaccurate And Misleading”

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua has criticised foreign powers for what he termed as false reporting on the situation in Kenya.

In a press statement, Mutua noted that there were foreign bodies who were making unsubstantiated claims about how the Kenyan government was handling protests.

The UN Human Rights Office, through spokesperson Jeremy Laurence, expressed concern about “widespread violence and alleged use of force by police that resulted in 23 people being killed,” a statement Mutua claims is inaccurate and misleading.

“Where are the 23 people? Give me their names. When you say police are using excessive force, show me them doing so,” he challenged the UN.

“This statement was not only inaccurate but misleading and appeared to have been written in support of a propaganda campaign by people opposed to the democratic will of the people,” Mutua said.

He added that the Ministry has rejected the statement and will be engaging the UN Human Rights Office to ensure proper communication is made in regard to the affairs of the country.

“We will be engaging through appropriate channels to ensure that the international community is not sucked into conspiracies that are aimed at destabilising our nation,” he said.

He further claimed that the violence witnessed during the anti-government protests was ‘politically instigated by paid goons’ thereby the UN’s description of demonstrations being peaceful was incorrect.

“These violent actions by a few paid goons have been politically instigated by known architects of violence and therefore cannot be categorised as peaceful assembly as alleged by the spokesperson. Far from it, what we have witnessed are violent protests with those involved carrying all manner of crude weapons.

CS Mutua added that the country is keen on holding those responsible for vandalism and violence responsible urging the international community to “closely scrutinise the architects of insurrection and anti-democratic elements when they wish to visit their countries and not to allow some of them to go and taint their democratic principles.”

He cautioned Kenyans in the diaspora to be weary of fake news spread via social media.

Catholic Bishops Ask President Ruto To Repeal Finance Act 2023

The Kenya Catholic Conference Bishops have urged President William Ruto to listen to the plea of Kenyans and withdraw the Finance Bill 2023.

In a statement, the Catholic Bishops advised that Kenyans are facing a grave economic situation due to the high cost of living that has made it difficult to afford decent standards of living.

“We therefore ask the president to repeal the Finance Act and seek to institute a process that will achieve the same goal within the context of the current economic situation,” said Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria.

According to the clerics, the implementation of the Finance Act 2023 will distress Kenyans who are grappling with affording essential goods and securing stable employment that will enable them face financial hardships.

“The social economic distress is real, we do realise that part of the disappointment and disillusionment of Kenyans that is leading to the agitation and anger is the severe economic distress,” said Muheria.

Mombasa Archbishop Kivuva Musonde further called for dialogue between President William Ruto and Azimio Leader Raila Odinga.

“The high cost of living has created a burden on individuals and families making it difficult for them to meet their basic needs and maintain a decent standard of living,” Bishop Muheria said.

“Within this background, the recently enacted Finance Act places an unsustainable burden on already distressed citizens especially those within the low-income bracket,” he added.

The Catholic Bishop reading from the script with Azimio La Umoja coalition who have staged mass rallies against a government he says is illegitimate and to blame for a cost-of-living crisis.

Schools have been closed and shops shuttered in Nairobi and other cities, where protesters have been urged to bang pots and march in an act of defiance.

CS Kuria Absent As President Ruto Meets US Trade Rep Katherine Tai

Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria was conspicuously absent from a meeting between President William Ruto and visiting US Principal Trade Advisor and Spokesperson on U.S. trade policy Ambassador Katherine Tai at State House Nairobi on Wednesday, July 19.

The meeting, which was also attended by other senior government officials such as Foreign CS Alfred Mutua, was aimed at discussing trade relations between Kenya and the United States.

Kuria’s absence from the meeting has raised eyebrows the CS has been a vocal supporter of the President’s economic policies.

The Kenyan Trade CS’ absence was also notable given that Tai holds the rank and style of Ambassador and is a member of the Cabinet of the United States.

It is not clear why Kuria was not invited to the meeting, but his absence is likely to fuel speculation.

This comes after reports from Nation that the U.S. Trade representative declined to meet her Kenyan counterpart.

The newspaper said that Tai was scheduled to discuss trade ties between the two countries with Kuria but canceled the meetings.

President Ruto said that America is Kenya’s key trade and investment partner.

“America is our key trade and investment partner. Under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, Kenya has developed its value chains, expanded and diversified its exports, creating thousands of employment opportunities,” President Ruto said

Ruto added that the government would stretch Kenya – U.S. ties beyond AGOA in the wake of advanced technology and climate change for the full exploitation of the two countries’ trade potential.
