CS Kuria Absent As President Ruto Meets US Trade Rep Katherine Tai

Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria was conspicuously absent from a meeting between President William Ruto and visiting US Principal Trade Advisor and Spokesperson on U.S. trade policy Ambassador Katherine Tai at State House Nairobi on Wednesday, July 19.

The meeting, which was also attended by other senior government officials such as Foreign CS Alfred Mutua, was aimed at discussing trade relations between Kenya and the United States.

Kuria’s absence from the meeting has raised eyebrows the CS has been a vocal supporter of the President’s economic policies.

The Kenyan Trade CS’ absence was also notable given that Tai holds the rank and style of Ambassador and is a member of the Cabinet of the United States.

It is not clear why Kuria was not invited to the meeting, but his absence is likely to fuel speculation.

This comes after reports from Nation that the U.S. Trade representative declined to meet her Kenyan counterpart.

The newspaper said that Tai was scheduled to discuss trade ties between the two countries with Kuria but canceled the meetings.

President Ruto said that America is Kenya’s key trade and investment partner.

“America is our key trade and investment partner. Under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, Kenya has developed its value chains, expanded and diversified its exports, creating thousands of employment opportunities,” President Ruto said

Ruto added that the government would stretch Kenya – U.S. ties beyond AGOA in the wake of advanced technology and climate change for the full exploitation of the two countries’ trade potential.

Kenyatta Family Hires Private Security In Muthaiga Home

Following the withdrawal of security details for former President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the Kenyatta family has enlisted private security services to secure their Muthaiga residence.

According to local media, as of July 19, the family home was guarded by Ultimate Security Limited, a reputable East African security firm known for its professionalism and quick response to emergencies.

It also provides its clients with bespoke, fail-safe technology that is tailored to their specific requirements.

Their Ultimate Rapid Response service provides round-the-clock security, including immediate assistance in the event of an intrusion, medical emergency, or fire.

The company takes pride in its highly trained staff and large fleet of vehicles available for immediate response. Their dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction has earned them a reliable reputation in the security industry.

This comes after a letter signed by Nairobi County Traders chairperson Mr. Theuri Wanjiru notified Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Muthaiga Police Station of a peaceful protest outside the Kenyatta Family home in Muthaiga.

The procession aims to address issues affecting local businesses and disrupting the livelihoods of the community. The organisers requested that the Officer in Charge of Station (OCS) provide adequate security to ensure a peaceful and lawful gathering.

The demonstrators plan to meet with concerned traders and community members before proceeding to Mama Ngina’s home. They emphasise that their gathering will be peaceful and respectful, in accordance with Kenyan constitutional principles.

The status of the demonstrations led by Mr. Wanjiru and the traders remains unknown, as it has yet to be confirmed whether the police have granted them permission to proceed with the protests.

Jordi Alba To Join Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets At Inter Miami

Spain defender Jordi Alba will join former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami, said club president Jorge Mas.

Mas said the 34-year-old full-back has signed a contract and should be available to face Atlanta on Tuesday.

Alba, who left Barcelona in the summer when his contract expired, spent more than 10 years with the Spanish giants, scoring 27 goals in 459 matches.

He helped them win six La Liga titles and the Champions League in 2015.

Argentina World Cup winner Messi, 36, and Alba’s fellow Spain international Busquets, 35, have already made the switch to the United States’ Major League Soccer.

Messi and Busquets, who have signed deals until 2025, were presented to a cheering crowd of around 20,000 Inter Miami fans at the club’s DRV PNK Stadium on Sunday, flanked by co-owner and ex-England captain David Beckham.

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi trained with his Miami team-mates for the first time on Tuesday and is expected to make his debut on Friday in a Leagues Cup game against Cruz Azul, of Mexico City.

Meanwhile, US reports have linked Inter Miami with another former Barcelona player – 36-year-old Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who is currently playing for Brazil side Gremio.

The ex-Liverpool forward played alongside Messi, Busquets and Alba during six seasons at the Nou Camp between 2014 and 2020.

Mas said on Tuesday: “There’s been a lot of talk about Luis Suarez coming. We haven’t held direct talks with Gremio or with Suarez.

“I don’t know how Luis Suarez can leave Gremio. But if he does, we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there.”

Benjamin Mendy Signs For Ligue 1 Club After Being Cleared Of Rape

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has signed for Ligue 1 side Lorient five days after being cleared of rape.

The left-back, 29, whose City contract expired in the summer, has signed a two-year deal with the French club.

He was cleared of raping a woman and attempting to rape another at Chester Crown Court on Friday.

That followed a trial in January when Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

Mendy became the world’s most expensive defender when City paid Monaco £52m to sign the France defender in 2017.

He won the Premier League in his first season with City before being part of the France squad that claimed the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, he last played competitive football in August 2021, appearing for City at Tottenham Hotspur.

Mendy was arrested later that month and remanded in custody for five months before going to trial for the first time last August.

More Than 700 Sentenced To Prison Over French Riots: Minister

More than 700 people have been sentenced to prison over riots in France late last month, the country’s justice minister said Wednesday, lauding the “firm” response of magistrates.

In total, 1,278 verdicts have been handed down, with over 95 percent of defendants convicted on a range of charges from vandalism to attacking police officers.

Six hundred people have already been jailed.

“It was extremely important to have a response that was firm and systematic,” Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti told RTL radio. “It was essential that we reestablish national order.”

The most intense urban violence in France since 2005 began on June 27 after a police officer shot dead a 17-year-old boy with North African roots during a traffic stop west of Paris, in an incident recorded by a passerby.

The riots were contained after four nights of serious clashes thanks to the deployment of around 45,000 security forces, including elite police special forces and armoured vehicles.

Dupond-Moretti had led calls for courts to hand down harsh sentences as a deterrent, with some staying open over the weekend of the clashes to handle a backlog of cases.

Many suspects faced immediate appearances and some defence lawyers have raised concerns about the fairness of the judicial process and the heavy use of custodial sentences.

The average age of the over 3,700 people arrested was just 17, with the minors appearing in separate children’s courts.

The number of people sentenced to prison exceeds the number in 2005 at the time of the last major riots when around 400 people were sent to jail.

Hurdles World Record-Holder Amusan Charged With Anti-Doping Violation

Women’s hurdles world record-holder Tobi Amusan said Wednesday she has been charged with an alleged anti-doping rule violation, casting doubt on her participation in next month’s world championships.

“Today the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has charged me with an alleged rule violation for having 3 missed tests in 12 months,” she said in a post on Instagram.

The Nigerian athlete set the current world record for the women’s 100m hurdles of 12.12 seconds at last year’s World Athletics Championships.

Amusan, 26, vowed to resolve the charges against her before this year’s competition, set to be held next month in Budapest.

“I intend to fight this charge and will have my case decided by a tribunal of 3 arbitrators before the start of next month’s World Championships,” she said.

“I am a CLEAN ATHLETE, and I am regularly; (maybe more than the usual) tested by the AIU – I was tested within days of my third ‘missed test.’ I have FAITH that this will be resolved in my favour and that I will be competing at the World Championships in August.”

Amusan’s representatives did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.

On Sunday, Amusan took part in the Silesia Diamond League competition in Poland, where she set a new meeting record of 12.34sec.

At the Golden Spike athletics meet in the Czech Republic last month, she finished in third place in the women’s 100m hurdles, losing to reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, who claimed victory in 12.42sec.

When asked by reporters about improving her world record pace, she said: “Nothing is impossible and 11 seconds? Most definitely”.

But she was less confident about an ongoing debate on raising hurdles to give priority to technique over speed.

“Don’t do that, don’t raise the hurdles. Please,” said Amusan, who is 5’1 (156 centimetres) tall.

ODM: Raila’s Bodyguard Abducted Ahead Of Anti-Government Protests

The bodyguard of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, Maurice Ogeta, has allegedly been abducted by unknown men suspected to be police officers, according to the ODM party.

ODM’s director of communications, Philip Etale, said in a statement on Wednesday that Ogeta was accosted by the assailants on his way to work from home on Wednesday morning, who flagged him down and then bundled him in his car’s boot.

According to Etale, the car stalled after a few minutes of driving and the assailants had to force Ogeta out of the boot to help them restart it.

“After driving for a few minutes, the vehicle stalled and they got him out of the boot to show them how to restart it before returning him to the boot and sped off to an unknown destination,” read the statement in part.

Etale also claimed that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was apprehended on Tuesday night shortly after arriving in Nairobi from Mombasa, where he and other Nairobi County Members of Parliament are said to have attended a meeting with officials from the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA).

MP Owino also claimed to have been arrested on his Facebook page.

“Have been detained by the DCI JKIA after my arrival from Mombasa. Currently under arrest,” he wrote.

The alleged incidents occur in the wake of anti-government protests scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Migori: Two People Hospitalized After Sustaining Gunshot Wounds

Two people were shot during the ongoing anti-government protests in Migori County on Wednesday morning.

Mike Ochere, administrator of the Oruba Nursing Home Hospital, confirmed that two middle-aged men with gunshot wounds are being treated at the facility.

Ochere said one of the victims was shot in the thigh and the other in the leg.

According to the hospital administrator, a middle-aged woman who suffocated after police fired tear gas into her house is also being treated at the facility.

Meanwhile, transport services have been disrupted and businesses have closed in Migori town as a result of the ongoing protest in Migori and other towns in Migori County.

The police have barred demonstrators from entering Migori’s central business district.

The defiant protesters are also engaging the police in running battles within the Migori town estates of Oruba, Osaka, and Apida.

The demonstrators led by Ken Michael, have accused the police of using excessive force against peaceful protesters.

He stated that police should allow them to participate in peaceful protests.

Man Utd Set To Sign Onana From Inter Milan

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana for a fee of Sh8.6 billion (£47 million), multiple UK media outlets reported on Tuesday.

Onana, 27, played a major role in Inter’s run to the Champions League final and previously worked with United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.

The Cameroonian will reportedly sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford to become the successor to David De Gea as the club’s number one goalkeeper.

United will pay an initial 51 million euros with a further four million euros due in performance-related add-ons.

De Gea left the Red Devils earlier this month after 12 years at United.

The Spaniard struggled with Ten Hag’s preference to play out from the back and Onana appears a far more natural fit for the Dutch coach’s philosophy.

Onana joined Barcelona as a 14-year-old after being spotted as Samuel Eto’o’s academy in his homeland.

After failing to make the first team at the Camp Nou, Onana joined Ajax in 2015 and won three Eredivisie titles under Ten Hag in the Netherlands.

However, his career was temporarily rocked in 2021 by a doping ban for taking a banned diuretic.

Onana claimed to have accidentally taken a drug prescribed to his wife and had a one-year ban reduced to nine months on appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He joined Inter on a free transfer just over 12 months ago when his contract at Ajax expired.

Onana made only 24 Serie A appearances as he shared goalkeeping duties with Samir Handanovic in the Inter captain’s final year at the club.

But he was an ever-present in the Champions League, keeping eight clean sheets in 13 games as Inter reached the final for the first time in 13 years.

Raila Odinga’s Diehard Supporter Gaucho Arrested

Bunge la Mwananchi President Calvince Okoth aka Gaucho was arrested on Wednesday night while taking an oath regarding the planned three-day anti-government protests.

This came after a video surfaced online showing Gaucho swearing an oath with the blood of a freshly slaughtered goat. In the video, he vows to protect Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga at all costs.

The video was reportedly shot on Tuesday at the Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi, where Gaucho was surrounded by several youths who appeared to be charged.

“Watu wakutane kesho… watu wakutane kesho… mtu akigusa Raila, atajua hajui,” Gaucho says in the video as he licks fresh blood off knife.

Prior to this, Gaucho has organized a grassroots meeting to mobilize Azimio supporters for the three-day protests.

He said he and other protesters are ready for the demos and that they will storm Nairobi’s Central Business District.

It has not been revealed where the police are holding the fiery youth leader.
