FREEDOM: Court Releases All Anglo-Leasing Scandal Suspects

All of the suspects in the Sh9.5 billion Anglo leasing case have been acquitted by the anti-corruption court for lack of evidence to put them on their defense.

According to Trial Magistrate Martha Mutuku, the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case against all of the accused.

“They have all hereby acquitted under section 210 of the criminal procedure code. They have no case to answer. They have been set free,” said Hon. Mutuku

David Mwiraria, Joseph Magari, former PS Dave Mwangi, David Onyonka, Rashmi Kamani, Deepak Kamani, and Inforalent Limited were all accused in the case of conspiracy to defraud the government of Sh9.5 billion.

According to the charge sheet, the accused persons between July 2003 and June 2004 allegedly conspired with others not before the court to defraud the government of six million euros (Sh9.5 billion).

It is alleged that they conspired to defraud the government through a suppliers financing agreement for the computerization of security, law and order systems and procedures for the Kenya Police project code-named ‘E-cops’

UN Concerned By Kenya Police Using Deadly Force Against Protesters

The United Nations voiced concerns on Friday over the deadly violence surrounding anti-government protests in the country, including allegations of a heavy-handed response by the police.

“The UN Human Rights Office is very concerned by the widespread violence, and allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force, including the use of firearms, by police during protests in Kenya,” spokesman Jeremy Laurence said in a statement.

The interior ministry on Thursday said more than 300 people had been arrested over the protests that left nine dead, according to an independent watchdog created by parliament, which said the toll was shared by the police.

But Laurence cited reports suggesting that “up to 23 people have been killed and dozens injured” in the demonstrations in the past week.

“We call for prompt, thorough, independent and transparent investigations into the deaths and injuries. Those responsible must be held to account. Effective measures to prevent further deaths and injuries must be adopted,” he said.

There were violent clashes and looting on Wednesday in parts of the East African nation as protesters took to the streets over tax hikes in defiance of a government ban.

The opposition has announced fresh demonstrations for next week.

“In light of calls for further protests next week, we call on the authorities to ensure the right to peaceful assembly as guaranteed by the Kenyan constitution and international human rights law,” said Laurence.

He said the policing of protests must seek to facilitate peaceful assemblies, and any use of force must be legal, necessary, and proportionate.

“Firearms should never be used to disperse protests,” he said.

“We appeal for calm and encourage open dialogue to address social, economic and political grievances, with the aim of identifying lasting solutions in the interests of all Kenyans.”

Meanwhile UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, said it was deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of children in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya during the protests.

“The reports of children being exposed to tear gas and other dangers present in large crowds are alarming,” it said, calling for all parties involved to ensure the safety and protection of children.

“Children should never be exposed to harm, and their fundamental right to education must be safeguarded,” it added.

Government to Develop Labour Strategies for Protection of Kenyan Foreign Health Workers

In order to find ways to streamline the labour migration process, Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki from the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards met with Hon. Geoffrey Kaituko from the State Department for Labour and Skills Development and Ms. Roseline Njogu from the State Department for Diaspora Affairs.

These three State Departments are working together to create a labour migration strategy. This plan would address crucial issues like facilitation, policy regulation, and the protection and well-being of Kenyan health professionals abroad.

Kenya’s labour exports are large, with the health sector accounting for almost 40% of the total.

PS Muthoni emphasised that there is a significant demand for Kenyan health workers’ services globally because of the calibre of their training and their expertise.

PS Muthoni further emphasised the Ministry of Health’s dedication to collaborating closely with other ministries to find more employment possibilities and enhance the terms and conditions for healthcare professionals working in overseas contexts.

Pulisic Completes £20m Move From Chelsea To AC Milan

USA forward Christian Pulisic has completed his £20m move from Chelsea to Italian club AC Milan.

Pulisic, 24, has signed a four-year deal with the Serie A side, with the option of a further year.

He scored 26 goals in 145 games at Chelsea and played in the 2021 Champions League final win over Manchester City.

However, Pulisic became surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, scoring only once in his final season.

“It was a difficult last few seasons with Chelsea. For whatever reason I wasn’t getting the opportunities I wanted,” he told a news conference for his unveiling.

“For me it’s a brilliant opportunity to step away, get a fresh start and play for a big team like this.”

Chelsea released a statement confirming the transfer, saying: “We wish Christian well and thank him for all his contributions during his time at the club.”

He joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in a £57.6m move in 2019 that made him the most expensive player from North America.

The Pennsylvania native has also been capped 60 times by his country.

Levy Meets Bayern Over Kane Sale As Striker Goes On Pre-Season Tour

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy met with Bayern officials on Thursday over the possible sale of England captain Harry Kane.

However, the Spurs striker will be part of the squad for their pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East.

Tottenham fly to Perth later on Friday for Tuesday’s all-Premier League encounter with West Ham.

With one year left on his contract, Kane’s future has been subject to much speculation so far this summer.

Bayern are keen to sign Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer but have not been able to strike a deal.

When new boss Spurs Ange Postecoglou met the media on Monday, he said he planned to give Kane “his vision for how to make the club successful”.

After visiting Perth, Tottenham will fly to Thailand, where they will face Leicester on 23 July before heading to Singapore for a hastily arranged game against local side Lion City on 26 July after initial opponents Roma pulled out of the trip.

Moyes Says West Ham ‘Can’t Plan Anything’ As Rice Move Drags On

Frustrated West Ham coach David Moyes has lamented Declan Rice’s drawn-out move to Arsenal, saying Friday he “can’t plan anything” until the captain’s transfer is done.

A Sh19.8-billion ($140 million) deal for the England international midfielder was agreed with Arsenal 10 days ago but he is still officially a West Ham player.

Rice is not though part of West Ham’s touring squad to Australia for pre-season friendlies against Perth Glory and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier League season kicks off in a month.

“Until it’s done we can’t plan anything really,” Moyes told reporters in Perth ahead of West Ham’s friendly against Perth Glory on Saturday.

“Everybody knows the situation. We are expecting something to happen.”

Moyes remained coy over possible replacements for the influential Rice, who played a major part in West Ham’s Europa Conference League title win.

“I don’t think we can replace Declan exactly like for like, that is for sure,” he said.

“We will add to the squad. We won’t be giving any thoughts or any names or anything like that.”

With Rice and several other star players absent, West Ham boasts a youthful squad in Perth in the club’s first outing since their European triumph over Fiorentina.

“We’re still buzzing… there are fantastic memories that won’t fade away quickly. But we’ve also moved on and preparing for the next round of games,” said Moyes, whose job was under threat last season with West Ham near the Premier League’s relegation zone.

“We don’t have all of our international players with us due to a late finish and international games so it’s a great opportunity for some young players and the players we have with us now.”

“We Have Received 1,500 Applications From Nigerians” – Guinness World Record Says

The Guinness World Records has disclosed that they have received approximately 1,500 applications from Nigerians.

Following chef Hilda Baci’s recent record-breaking achievement for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, a considerable number of Nigerians have enthusiastically embraced the trend.

In a recent chat with Legit NG, the record body said;

“The attention and excitement that Hilda Baci’s cooking marathon gained was certainly an incentive for many Nigerians to consider attempting a Guinness World Records title.

Since her record attempt, there has been a spike in applications from Nigeria, particularly for marathon records.”

“We have received over 1,500 record applications from Nigeria since the start of May.”

In May, Hilda Baci, the Nigerian chef, hit the limelight after setting a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest cooking marathon (cook-a-thon) by an individual.

The Akwa-Ibom native cooked for 100 hours to beat the 87 hours 45 minutes record previously set by Lata Tondon, the Indian chef, in 2019. Hilda was certified by the British reference book in June but with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

Baci’s feat opened the floodgates of desires by some Nigerians to break her cooking record while others — even from neigbouring Cameroon — sought to set world records in various fields.

From ‘Kiss-a-thon, massaging, lecturing, praise and worship, crying marathon to ‘sex-a-thon, attempts were made to break world records, prompting the GWR to issue a warning, which reads: “Please enough with the record-a-thons”.

In recent weeks, Several attempts have been made by some persons to break Hilda Baci’s  record.

The first was Damilola Adeparusi, (Chef Dammy) who did not seek Guinness World Record, GWR, permission before starting her competition.

Dammy claimed that she cooked for 120 hours but this could not be verified as there were times she switched off live video during the contest.

With the aim of surpassing Baci’s 93 hours and 11 minutes record, another lady from Ondo State, Chef Deo, revealed that she had informed GWR of her intention and received the green light before commencing the cook-a-thon.

Deo completed the challenge of cooking for 150 hours.

President Ruto: There Will Be No Maandamano Next Week

President William Ruto has vowed that there will be no protests during the coming week.

Speaking during a roadside rally in Naivasha, Nakuru county President Ruto said that the opposition was using protests to disrupt economic activities and blackmail the government.

The head of state added that using extrajudicial and extra-constitutional means to seek power is unacceptable and urged Odinga to wait for the next elections in 2027.

“You can’t use extra-constitutional means to get power. You want to use violence to get into government; it won’t happen,” he said.

He also declared that there will be no handshake, referring to the previous political agreement between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga that he believes has harmed Kenya.

“No demonstration is going to take place on Wednesday. It is not possible, this man (Raila Odinga)has brought chaos to this country which has led to many deaths. He kept on interfering with Mwai Kibaki’s administration, Uhuru Kenyatta’s and now the other day he led protests and properties were destroyed,” Ruto said.

He challenged that the path the opposition had taken would not help the country and if they maintain that path, he would deal with them.

“That path that you are taking, I want to assure you that I am going to take you on and I will not allow it to happen.”

President Ruto’s remarks followed a declaration by the Azimio la Umoja coalition party that they would intensify their anti-government protests to three times a week.

In a statement shared on July 14, Azimio said the planned demonstrations slated for Wednesday, July 19 would still happen and added two more dates.

“Going forward, the peaceful protests will now be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week, in line with requests from the public to include three days of activity,” the statement concluded.

Anti-government protests erupted over the past week, with demonstrators taking to the streets to protest against rising taxes and the high cost of living.

UNICEF Calls For Children Protection And Safety During Protests

In light of the recent anti-government protests in Kenya, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern about the well-being of children during anti-government protests.

This comes after pupils were teargassed during the demonstrations on Wednesday.

In a statement on Friday, Unicef appealed to both the government and the opposition to put in place measures to ensure the safety and protection of children across the country is assured.

“UNICEF is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of children in Nairobi and various regions of Kenya, in the aftermath of recent protests. The reports of children being exposed to tear gas and other dangers present in large crowds are alarming,”  it said.

The UN agency said children should never be exposed to harm, and their fundamental right to education must be safeguarded.

“We appeal to all involved parties to undertake necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of children. Children should never be exposed to harm, and their fundamental right to education must be safeguarded,” they said.

NICEF further said it remains committed to working tirelessly in partnership with local and national entities to ensure security and the well-being of children across Kenya is guaranteed.

This comes after more than 50 pupils were rushed to hospital on Monday after the police lobbed teargas in their classroom in Kangemi.

The pupils of KihumbuIni Primary School in Kangemi were in their classrooms when the tear gas was lobbed.

The majority of them were allegedly shocked after they were overwhelmed by the teargas fumes but so far no casualties have been reported.

According to one of the locals, the teargas canister was allegedly thrown into the classroom by police officers who were dispersing residents who turned up for the Azimio protests.
