UNICEF Calls For Children Protection And Safety During Protests

In light of the recent anti-government protests in Kenya, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern about the well-being of children during anti-government protests.

This comes after pupils were teargassed during the demonstrations on Wednesday.

In a statement on Friday, Unicef appealed to both the government and the opposition to put in place measures to ensure the safety and protection of children across the country is assured.

“UNICEF is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of children in Nairobi and various regions of Kenya, in the aftermath of recent protests. The reports of children being exposed to tear gas and other dangers present in large crowds are alarming,”  it said.

The UN agency said children should never be exposed to harm, and their fundamental right to education must be safeguarded.

“We appeal to all involved parties to undertake necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of children. Children should never be exposed to harm, and their fundamental right to education must be safeguarded,” they said.

NICEF further said it remains committed to working tirelessly in partnership with local and national entities to ensure security and the well-being of children across Kenya is guaranteed.

This comes after more than 50 pupils were rushed to hospital on Monday after the police lobbed teargas in their classroom in Kangemi.

The pupils of KihumbuIni Primary School in Kangemi were in their classrooms when the tear gas was lobbed.

The majority of them were allegedly shocked after they were overwhelmed by the teargas fumes but so far no casualties have been reported.

According to one of the locals, the teargas canister was allegedly thrown into the classroom by police officers who were dispersing residents who turned up for the Azimio protests.

Catholic Bishops, NCCK Demand Suspension Of Finance Bill, Maandamano

Religious leaders drawn from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Council of Churches of Kenya(NCCK) have appealed to President William Ruto to hear the cry of the people of Kenya who are heavily burdened by the prevailing global economic crisis and the drought that is yet to end despite the onset of rains.

In a statement signed by the bishops’ Association chairman Martin Kivuva and the NCCK chairman Archbishop Timothy Ndambuki, they said there are many families that are sleeping hungry, businesses have collapsed, jobs have been lost, and yet the cost of living is continuing to rise.

“We strongly recommend that your administration considers adopting policies and strategies that give Kenyans hope while addressing the economic challenge in the short and long terms. Without this approach, Your Excellency, we fear that the growing sense of hopelessness will push the country into instability and possibly violence,” they said.

As an immediate mitigation measure, they recommend that the Finance Act 2023 is repealed so as to review the heavy taxation burden imposed on Kenyans.

In addition, they urged a cessation of domestic borrowing by the government so as to enable banks to loan private businesses
that drive the local economy.

The leaders also appealed to opposition leader Raila Odinga to recognize the key position he holds and the contribution you make in shaping the current and future of the nation.

“Appreciating that justice is the foundation of stability and peace, we urge you to spearhead an issue-based and solution-oriented approach to secure the nation from sliding into chaos and violence,” they added.

They also appealed to Raila to reconsider the proposed mass action programme which is likely to make the situation worse for Kenyans.

“We also urge that you do not give the people false hope that the government can be removed from office through collection of signature,” they added.

The Bishops urged Kenyans to firmly resist incitement by political and social leaders who are focused on selfish ambitions.

“Instead, let each of us deliberately engage all public participation forums and opportunities, taking every chance to influence policy and decision-making processes.

“We should not leave the destiny of our families in the hands of politicians alone, and should instead adopt the mantra of “Nothing for us without us”.”

Mandera: Suspected Al-Shabaab Militants Attack Police, KDF Bases

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants are said to have attacked three separate locations in Mandera County in the early hours of Friday morning.

The first attack occurred in the Iresuki area, where militants ambushed police officers guarding a Safaricom mast about 15 kilometres from Elwak Police Station.

“At around 0130 hrs National Police Reservist (NPR) Abdirahman Bashir, who was among those manning Iresuki Safaricom mast, reported via phone call that they had been overpowered by suspected Al Shabaab Militants and that the Safaricom mast was being destroyed,” a police report reads in part.

Attempts to contact Bashir on the same number he used to raise the alarm soon proved futile. According to the police report, his colleagues were also unable to be reached by phone. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

At the same time, Al-Shabaab militants reportedly besieged Wargadud Police Station.

“In a bid to establish the facts, KDF stationed at Elwak also confirmed that at about that same time, they were attacked at their camp by suspected Al Shabaab militants,” said the police report.

“Consequently there is loss of network between Elwak and Wargadud police stations.”

To determine the extent of the attacks, investigations into the separate but seemingly coordinated incidents are currently underway.

It is unknown whether any police or KDF personnel were injured or killed during the incidents.

Georgina Njenga Confirms Break Up With Tyler Mbaya

Content creator Georgina Njenga has alleged that she is no longer an item with her baby daddy and boyfriend Tyler Mbaya aka Baha.

In a Q&A session via her Insta-stories, curious fans sought to find out if the two are still together as a couple.

Are you and Tyler Mbaya still together? A fan posed the question to Georgina. To which she replied; “No! We broke up,”

Another fan asked the same question, wondering if she was still on good terms with Baha to which she alleged that right now she is already in a new relationship.

“Just being concerned, mko swan a Baha?”

Georgina replied; “A lot of you guys are asking this question. This is the last time am gonna answer. We broke up and I’m in a new relationship with my new man.”

This is not the first time the couple is fueling breakup reports. A few weeks ago Baha was exposed for allegedly being a con an incident that is said to have shaken his relationship with Georgina.

As that is not enough, a few months ago, Georgina told the world that she was no longer dating Bahat but later made a U-turn on her statement saying it was a prank.

So, despite Georgina’s confirmation that she is no longer in a relationship with Mbaya, a section of their fans still believe that it might be another publicity stunt.

KNCCI Calls For Truce Between Raila And Ruto

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has expressed concern about the government’s threat to arrest top Azimio leaders, claiming that such an action would cause significant damage and worsen an already dire situation for businesses.

According to KNCCI, the Azimio protests on Wednesday, July 12, caused significant damage, and arresting top Azimio leaders will only exacerbate the situation.

Several Azimio leaders were arrested and questioned during the protest on Monday. Those detained included ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya and Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio Party, cancelled the planned Kamukunji rally due to allegations of an attack.

He, on the other hand, vowed that the opposition would not be intimidated and that Azimio would resume protests on Wednesday, July 19, after five days of mourning for those who died in the protests.

KNNCI Director James Wanjohi Njoroge emphasised that businesses have already suffered greatly, with billions of shillings lost, and urged Kenya Kwanza to speak with Azimio leaders to find amicable solutions to the issues that prompted opposition protests rather than chest-thumping and escalating tensions.

The KNCCI also condemned the destructions and urged that those responsible for the devastation be held accountable, echoing the calls of government officials such as President William Ruto, Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

“The Government has tonight mobilized all the law enforcement agencies of the State and the institutions of our country’s criminal justice system to conclude investigations urgently and proceed to the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the planning and execution of the crimes committed today, including those who funded or otherwise aided or abetted the offenders,” the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure  Kindiki said.

Wanjohi also urged youths not to allow being used by political leaders who only want to thrive.

“Youths I humbly request you to use your common sense. Do not be used by political leaders. Let us exercise reason and maintain peace,” he concluded.

165 Million People Fell Into Poverty In 3 Years Of Crisis: UN

The Covid-19 pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis and the war in Ukraine have pushed 165 million people into poverty since 2020, the United Nations said Thursday, calling for a pause in debt repayments for developing countries.

Because of these shocks, 75 million people will have fallen into extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $2.15 a day, between 2020 and the end of 2023 — and 90 million more will fall below the poverty line of $3.65 a day, according to a study published by the United Nations Development Program.

“The poorest suffer the most and their incomes in 2023 are projected to remain below pre-pandemic levels,” the report said.

“Countries that could invest in safety nets over the last three years have prevented a significant number of people from falling into poverty,” UNDP chief Achim Steiner said in a statement. “In highly indebted countries, there is a correlation between high levels of debt, insufficient social spending, and an alarming increase in poverty rates.”

The report called for a “debt-poverty pause” in economically struggling countries “to redirect debt repayment towards financing social expenditures and countering the effects of macroeconomic shocks.”

“The solution is not out of reach for the multilateral system,” the report said.

According to another UN report published on Wednesday, some 3.3 billion people, nearly half of humanity, live in countries that spend more on paying interest on debt than on education and health.

And developing countries, despite having lower levels of debt, are paying more interest, partly because of higher rates.

According to the report, the annual cost of lifting the 165 million newly poor people out of poverty would be over US$14 billion, or 0.009 percent of global output and a little less than 4 percent of total public external debt service in 2022 for developing economies.

If the income losses among the already poor prior to the shocks are also included, the mitigation cost would reach some US$107 billion, or 0.065 percent of the world’s GDP and around a fourth of total external public debt service, the report’s authors estimated.

“There is a human cost of inaction in not restructuring developing countries’ sovereign debt,” Steiner said. “We need new mechanisms to anticipate and absorb shocks and make the financial architecture work for the most vulnerable.”

Earlier this week Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who has been pushing for a reform of international financial institutions, denounced “our outdated global financial system, which reflects the colonial power dynamics of the era when it was created.”

Azimio To Hold Maandamano On Wednesday, Thursday And Friday

The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has announced that it will stage anti-government protests for three days next week, from Wednesday to Friday.

The coalition said in a statement issued on Friday that due to public demand, it had reviewed its earlier plan to hold the protests only on Wednesday.

“Further to the communication issued yesterday on the Third Wave of peaceful protests scheduled to start on Wednesday next week, and following overwhelming requests from all sectors of the Kenyan Public for the need to intensify these demonstrations, the Coalition hereby wishes to announce a revision of the calendar.”

“Going forward, the peaceful protests will now be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week, in line with requests from the public to include three days of activity. Let’s meet on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” reads the statement.

This is despite the government’s strong warning that it will not tolerate the protests, which have left several people dead, scores of others injured, and property of unknown value destroyed.

On Thursday, President William Ruto slammed his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, and opposition leader Raila Odinga for allegedly organising chaos in the country under the guise of peaceful anti-government protests.

The Head of State accused Odinga of attempting to sabotage all three previous governments by twisting arms.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary also condemned acts of violence, looting, and property destruction witnessed across the country on Wednesday during anti-government demonstrations by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party.

The Interior CS promised that anyone who participated in the demonstrations, directly or indirectly, would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Government has tonight mobilized all the law enforcement agencies of the State and the institutions of our country’s criminal justice system to conclude investigations urgently and proceed to the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the planning and execution of the crimes committed today, including those who funded or otherwise aided or abetted the offenders,” said Kindiki.

Monaco’s Ben Yedder Faces Rape Allegation

Monaco’s France striker Wissam Ben Yedder is under investigation after being accused of rape, Nice’s public prosecutor told AFP on Thursday.

The alleged incident took place on Monday in the town of Beausoleil just to the north of Monaco on the Cote d’Azur.

Public prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme confirmed “the existence of two allegations of rape, from two victims, targeting two people.

“We don’t know who the second person concerned is,” he added.

According to radio station France Info, two women, aged 19 and 20, accuse Ben Yedder and his younger brother, of having “forced them into sexual acts” after a night out.

Ben Yedder, 32, made the last of his 19 France appearances in June 2022 and was present earlier this month as Monaco started pre-season training.

His club issued a statement declaring: “Monaco became aware of the information published today involving Wissam Ben Yedder.

“As the affair is subject to a judicial process the club is not in a position to make any comment.”

In April, Ben Yedder was convicted of tax fraud by a Spanish court during his time at Sevilla and was handed a six-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 133,798 euros ($149,753).

KRA Records Ksh.2.16 Trillion In Revenue Collection Despite Economic Challenges

In the financial year 2022/2023, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected Ksh.2.166 trillion in taxes, up 6.7% from Ksh.2.031 trillion the previous financial year.

The slowing domestic economic growth in 2022, which decreased to 4.8 percent from 7.6 percent in 2021, had an impact on revenue performance, the taxman said.

KRA credited the growth to the economy’s strong performance in a number of areas, including taxes on international trade and transactions, excise taxes, income, profit, capital gains taxes, taxes on goods and services, and property taxes.

Excise on gambling outperformed expectations by 116.2%, earning Ksh. 6.640 billion as opposed to a Ksh. 5.715 billion target.

Domestic VAT collection was Ksh. 272.452 billion, an increase of 11.3% from the previous year.

Domestic taxes had an 8.5% increase in revenue during the fiscal year after collecting Ksh. 1.481 trillion instead of the targeted Ksh. 1.407 trillion. This corresponds to a 95.0% performance rate.

With Ksh.68.124 billion in collections in FY 2022–23, KRA saw a growth of 2.8%, translating to a performance rate of 91.4%.

By enlisting 940,483 more active taxpayers, KRA increased its tax base, raising an additional Ksh.14.64 billion over the time period under review.

With a revenue of Ksh. 263.819 billion, corporation tax performed at 94.2%. This represents an increase of 9.0% from the previous fiscal year.

KRA received Ksh.5.328 billion in total from digital businesses, which represents an increase of 207.9% as compared to the same period in the financial year 2021–2022.

Revenue collection steadily increased from Ksh.1.58 trillion in FY2018/2019 to Ksh.2.166 trillion in FY2022/23, or a gain of 37% over the last five years.
