They were placed on their defence after the learned Judge, Justice Grace Nzioka established that the prosecution had proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

KRA Records Ksh.2.16 Trillion In Revenue Collection Despite Economic Challenges

In the financial year 2022/2023, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected Ksh.2.166 trillion in taxes, up 6.7% from Ksh.2.031 trillion the previous financial year.

The slowing domestic economic growth in 2022, which decreased to 4.8 percent from 7.6 percent in 2021, had an impact on revenue performance, the taxman said.

KRA credited the growth to the economy’s strong performance in a number of areas, including taxes on international trade and transactions, excise taxes, income, profit, capital gains taxes, taxes on goods and services, and property taxes.

Excise on gambling outperformed expectations by 116.2%, earning Ksh. 6.640 billion as opposed to a Ksh. 5.715 billion target.

Domestic VAT collection was Ksh. 272.452 billion, an increase of 11.3% from the previous year.

Domestic taxes had an 8.5% increase in revenue during the fiscal year after collecting Ksh. 1.481 trillion instead of the targeted Ksh. 1.407 trillion. This corresponds to a 95.0% performance rate.

With Ksh.68.124 billion in collections in FY 2022–23, KRA saw a growth of 2.8%, translating to a performance rate of 91.4%.

By enlisting 940,483 more active taxpayers, KRA increased its tax base, raising an additional Ksh.14.64 billion over the time period under review.

With a revenue of Ksh. 263.819 billion, corporation tax performed at 94.2%. This represents an increase of 9.0% from the previous fiscal year.

KRA received Ksh.5.328 billion in total from digital businesses, which represents an increase of 207.9% as compared to the same period in the financial year 2021–2022.

Revenue collection steadily increased from Ksh.1.58 trillion in FY2018/2019 to Ksh.2.166 trillion in FY2022/23, or a gain of 37% over the last five years.

Juventus Start Procedure To Leave Super League Project

Juventus have initiated the procedure to pull out of the European Super League (ESL) project, the Italian club said on Thursday (Jul 13).

Juventus said they had started a discussion on their exit with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the other clubs remaining in the project.

“Following such discussions, and given the existing discrepancies on the interpretation of the relevant contractual terms applicable to the Super League Project, Juventus confirms that it has initiated the procedure to exit,” the Serie A club said.

Juventus said their exit would be completed and effective only if authorised by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Former Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, one of the figures behind the ESL project, was given a 16-month ban from football on Monday in a case about irregularities in the club’s payments to players.

Agnelli and the entire board resigned from the Turin club in November.

The breakaway Super League was formed in April 2021, when 12 of Europe’s top football clubs launched a bid to wrest control of the game and its lucrative revenue away from European soccer governing body UEFA.

The move collapsed within 48 hours amid fan and player criticism that forced Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid to pull out.

Boxing Legend Mayweather Attends Political Rally In Zimbabwe

Former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather attended a political campaign event in Zimbabwe on Thursday, part of the ruling party’s attempts to woo youth voters ahead of a general election next month.

Mayweather was welcomed with song and dance by ZANU PF party supporters in Mabvuku, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest townships, on the outskirts of the capital Harare.

One of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s closest allies, gold magnate Scott Sakupwanya, who is looking to reclaim a parliamentary seat from the opposition, said he had invited Mayweather.

“People thought I was lying when I said I would bring Mayweather, but he is here. This shows that what I will promise in this election will come to pass,” Sakupwanya told Reuters at the rally.

The 46-year-old American former boxer thrilled the crowd with a public workout, which included punching and jumping rope. He also watched three matches from Zimbabwe’s budding boxers.

Some young people attending the rally pledged to vote for Mnangagwa, 80, who is seeking a second term in the Aug. 23 poll.

Siaya DG William Oduol Attacked After Surviving Impeachment

On Thursday, a group of rowdy youth attempted to attack Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol after he returned to the county for the first time since the Senate rescued him from impeachment last month.

Mr. Oduol arrived around 3 p.m. on Thursday and went straight to his office, where he sat for a few minutes before a group of youth stormed the office to evict him, prompting his security details to call for reinforcement from the police.

This created tension at the county government headquarters before he left under the tight security of a contingent of police officers who sandwiched his convoy as it snaked through the streets of Siaya town, accompanied by a few of his supporters.

Mr Oduol then made a brief stop in the town centre, where he addressed members of the public while condemning attempts to bar him from accessing his office.

The Deputy Governor pleaded for a truce between himself and his boss, James Orengo, stating that it is his wish that they sit together and resolve their differences so that they can effectively work for the people of Siaya County.

He stated that now that the Senate has vindicated him, they must work together to deliver the nine-point manifesto that they presented to the people of Siaya County during their campaigns last year.

Mr. Oduol expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters for standing by him as he fought the impeachment attempt.

The Deputy Governor, on the other hand, vowed to continue raising the alarm whenever anything goes wrong in Governor James Orengo’s administration.

Messi Set For Busy, Hype-Packed First Week In Miami

Lionel Messi’s hopes of enjoying a quieter life in Florida for the final years of his career may prove to be wishful thinking with the Argentine star already lined up for a whole series of publicity events.

Messi will take part in a glitzy presentation at the club’s stadium on Sunday which has been branded “The Unveil” with the club promising musical entertainment for the expected capacity 18,000 crowd.

The event will be broadcast on Apple TV and parts of it are sure to be syndicated to other television networks.

Then the following day, Inter Miami have announced a “major press conference” with Messi expected to attend along with the club’s owners, probably including co-owner David Beckham.

Tuesday is earmarked to be Messi’s first full training session with his new team-mates but if he thought that would simply be a case of shaking hands and getting back on the field, he may be in for a surprise.

While the World Cup winner is used to practicising behind closed doors, this session will be open – for part of the session – to the media with television cameras trained on the 36-year-old’s every move.

When announcing his intention to join Miami last month, Messi gave several reasons why he had turned down other options but stated the hope for a calmer life was one of them.

“I’m also at a point where I want to get out of the spotlight a bit, to think more about my family,” he said.

On top of all those club commitments, the shy, introverted Messi is certain to be encouraged to give time for MLS’s broadcast partner, Apple TV, who are hoping that the Argentine will help boost subscriptions to their ‘MLS Season Pass’ product.

Messi arrived in Miami on Tuesday, flying in on a private jet with his family and sources said that he had visited the team’s training facility early on Wednesday.

Inter Miami’s media sessions have tended to attract around a dozen reporters but there were at least five-times that amount on Wednesday.

‘Big change’ for all

Beckham also turned out for the training session, kicking a ball around while wearing a T-shirt, sunglasses and sneakers.

With many South American media outlets having Miami-based correspondents, Miami players are already facing a very different level of interest.

“It’s a big change, I don’t know what to say, but I know it’s a big change not only for the club, but also for the city. It’s very important for everyone and we have to enjoy it,” said Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender said the team would have to learn to cope with the newfound attention.

“We are all professionals…we are all focused on the weekend (game) but with all of this, it’s something that is a reality for us and the best thing we can do is just focus on our training.

“We have a lot of younger kids or players in the group and for them, with media around, security around, it may be a little different,” he said.

Messi’s new team are currently bottom of the Eastern Conference with just five wins from 21 games and are ranked 28th of the 29 team across MLS. Callender says they need to change that quickly.

“I believe that (we are) better than the league position (but) the reality is that we are in last place. So that is something we have to take control of and change,” he said.

With Messi expected to be joined by Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets and other new faces and experienced Argentine coach Gerardo Martino now in charge, Callender believes that improvement is sure to come.

“Given the quality of our players and the way we want to play, I think this team has a lot of potential to go far this year,” he said.

Dele Alli Reveals Childhood Abuse That Led To Spell In Rehab

Dele Alli revealed on Thursday that he has recently come out of rehab for a sleeping pill addiction after struggling to deal with the trauma of suffering sexual abuse as a child.

The Everton midfielder, who was once one of English football’s brightest talents, told Gary Neville’s “The Overlap” podcast about how he was also dealing drugs by age eight before his life was changed by being adopted by a new family as a 12-year-old.

Alli, 27, shot to fame under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and was a key part of the England side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

His career on the field has been in decline in recent years as he fell out of favour at Spurs before struggling to make an impact at Everton or on loan at Besiktas last season.

However, he explained how those struggles are rooted in a series of childhood traumas that he tried to block out.

“At six I was molested by my mum’s friend, who was at the house a lot. My mum was an alcoholic,” said Alli.

“Then I was sent to Africa (to his father) to learn discipline and then I was sent back. (At) seven I started smoking, eight I started dealing drugs.

“An older person told me that they wouldn’t stop a kid on a bike, so I rode around with my football, and then underneath I’d have the drugs, that was eight.

“Eleven, I was hung off a bridge by a guy from the next estate, a man.

“Twelve, I was adopted… I was adopted by an amazing family like I said, I couldn’t have asked for better people to do what they’d done for me. If God created people, it was them.”

Sleeping pill problem widespread

Alli added that he hopes by speaking out he can help others that have suffered similar abuse.

Prince William and Alli’s former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane were among those to pay tribute to his bravery in coming forward.

“Brave and inspirational @dele_official,” tweeted the Prince of Wales, who is an ambassador for mental health charities.

“Discussing mental health is not a sign of weakness. Let’s keep the conversation going. We’re all with you and we wish you the very best.”

Kane and Alli struck up a prolific partnership in the early days of their career together at Spurs.

“Proud of @dele_official for speaking out and sharing his experience to try and help others,” tweeted the England captain.

Alli he said a six-week spell in rehab in the United States has helped rekindle his passion to get his football career back on track.

“Going into rehab is definitely scary but I could never have imagined how much I would get from it and how much it would help me mentally,” he said.

“I was in a bad place. A lot happened when I was younger that I could never understand.”

He also warned that the dangers of sleeping pill addiction are widespread in football, where players are often prescribed tablets before and after matches.

“I got addicted to sleeping tablets and it’s probably a problem that not only I have, I think it’s something that’s going around more than people realise in football,” he said.

“To take a sleeping tablet and be ready for the next day is fine, but when you’re broken as I am, it can obviously have the reverse effect because it does work for the problems you want to deal with.”

Everton said Alli would be focusing on his mental and physical well-being ahead of the new season, which starts next month.

“Everyone at Everton respects and applauds Dele’s bravery to speak about the difficulties he has faced, as well as seek the help required,” the club said in a statement.

“Dele will not be conducting any further interviews in relation to his rehabilitation, and we ask that his privacy is respected while he continues his recuperation from injury and receives the full care and support needed for his physical and mental well-being.”

Djokovic Looms Large As Alcaraz Bids To Reach Wimbledon Final

Carlos Alcaraz takes on Daniil Medvedev on Friday for a place in the Wimbledon final, where history-chasing Novak Djokovic will likely be lying in wait.

The Spanish top seed has looked increasingly impressive in his surge to the last four but nobody is betting against Djokovic, who faces eighth-ranked Jannik Sinner.

AFP Sport takes a look at the two semifinals (x denotes seeding – players representing Russia and Belarus are banned from competing under the name or flag of their countries).

JANNIK SINNER (ITA X8) V NOVAK DJOKOVIC (SRB X2)

Jannik Sinner will not have slept easily after last year’s painful Wimbledon quarterfinal defeat against Novak Djokovic.

The Italian was two sets up and on the brink of a career-defining win before the Serbian gave himself a pep talk during a toilet break.

Whatever he said to himself certainly worked – he broke early and never looked back, losing just seven games over the last three sets as he romped to victory.

Djokovic is within sight of two seismic records – equalling Roger Federer’s mark of eight men’s singles titles at Wimbledon and Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

He is not the top seed but candidly says his astonishing achievements at the All England Club make him top dog.

“Judging with the results I had in my career here, previous four occasions of Wimbledon that I won, and reaching another semifinal, I consider myself favourite,” said the 36-year-old.

But underdog Sinner, 21, believes he has absorbed lessons from last year’s loss as he plots a monumental upset.

“Last year I played a very good match against him,” he said. “I have learned about it. Hopefully I can show this also on the court.

“I’m going to stick with my game plan in my mind, and hopefully I can execute it in the best possible way.”

Head-to-head (year, tournament, round, winner, score):

Djokovic leads 2-0

2022 Wimbledon QF Djokovic 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

2021 Monte Carlo R32 Djokovic 6-4, 6-2

CARLOS ALCARAZ (ESP X1) v DANIIL MEDVEDEV (X3)

Carlos Alcaraz has looked increasingly impressive at Wimbledon – powering past his friend Holger Rune in the last eight.

The Spaniard has rattled off 10 straight wins on grass, including his title-winning run at Queen’s, and is seen as the man most likely to dethrone Djokovic.

But before he can even contemplate a first final, he faces a tough task against Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev, who brushed him aside in the second round two years ago.

Alcaraz, who has rocketed up the rankings since then, described Medvedev as a “complete player”.

“He’s an octopus,” he said. “He catches every ball. It is amazing, he’s an amazing athlete.”

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who won the US Open in 2022 and beat Medvedev convincingly in the Indian Wells final earlier this year, is talking a good game.

“I think I’m playing great, a lot of confidence right now,” he said. “So it’s going to be a really good match I think. I’m going to enjoy.”

Despite his high ranking, Medvedev’s record at Wimbledon is modest – his previous best run was reaching the fourth round in 2021.

The 27-year-old, who was unable to play last year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, is wary of the “brutal” power of his young opponent but says he has found his rhythm on grass.

“I managed to find it so far,” he said. “So hopefully I can find it for two more matches.”

Head-to-head (year, tournament, round, winner, score):

Alcaraz and Medvedev level at 1-1

2023 Indian Wells F Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2

2021 Wimbledon R64 Medvedev 6-4, 6-1, 6-2

EACC Arrest Liquor Licensing Officer For Demanding Ksh40K Bribe From Bar Owner

Officers from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday arrested the Head of Liquor Licensing in Githunguri Sub-County, Kiambu County, Mercy Wambui, over allegations of soliciting a Ksh40,000 bribe.

According to EACC, Wambui was arrested following investigations into a complaint lodged by a bar owner in Kiambu.

The suspect is said to have impounded the businesswoman’s goods for operating the bar outside the stipulated hours.

“On 28 June 2023, Kiambu County Enforcement Officers, including the suspect, went to her bar business premises and found her employees stocking beverages and undertaking stock-taking for the day. The liquor licensing officials accused the complainant of opening and operating a bar before the stipulated time. They, thus, confiscated the complainant’s goods and went away with them,” EACC said.

“The complainant did a follow-up with the officials at their office whereby the suspect demanded a bribe of Ksh40,000/= in order to absolve the complainant of the alleged offence and return the impounded goods.”

On 4 July 2023, the complainant made another follow-up on the matter but was not assisted. Instead, the officer threatened to revoke her license and stop her from operating the bar business altogether unless the demanded Kes. 40,000 was given.

“On 11 July 2023, the complainant reported the matter to EACC which undertook investigations and verified the bribe demand. The suspect was arrested the following day while receiving the bribe from the complainant,” the EACC added.

She was escorted to Integrity Centre Police Station where she was processed and later released on Kes. 40,000 police bail pending court appearance.

Rodrigo leaves Leeds for Qatari club Al-Rayyan

Spanish forward Rodrigo Moreno has joined Qatar’s Al-Rayyan from Leeds United, the Championship club said on Thursday.

The length of the contract and the transfer fee were not disclosed.

The 32-year-old, who arrived at Elland Road from Spanish side Valencia in 2020, emerged as their top scorer last season with 15 goals but was unable to prevent the club from being relegated from the Premier League to the second-tier Championship.

Leeds appointed Daniel Farke as their new manager on a four-year deal last week.
