Pope Francis Names 21 New Cardinals

Pope Francis named 21 new cardinals on Sunday, including prelates from Jerusalem and Hong Kong, where Catholics are a minority, as he continues to leave his imprint on the body of churchmen who will choose his successor.

The pope announced his selections during his weekly public appearance in St. Peter’s Square, saying the ceremony to formally install the churchmen as cardinals will take place on Sept. 30.

Among those named are several prelates who hold or are about to assume major Vatican positions, including Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez of La Plata, Argentina, whom the pope recently appointed to head the Holy See’s powerful office for ensuring doctrinal orthodoxy and overseeing the processing of allegations of sexual abuse.

The new cardinals also include Hong Kong Bishop Stephen Sau-yan Chow and the Vatican’s top official in the Middle East, Monsignor Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Those two churchmen guide flocks in geopolitical areas of keen concern to the Vatican.

On Sunday, in remarks preceding his reading out of the list of new cardinals, Pope Francis expressed hope that Israeli and Palestinian authorities would take up “direct dialogue” to end the “spiral of violence” — a reference to recent deadly clashes.

For decades, the Vatican and China have experienced tensions alternating with improvement of relations over the Communist-led nation’s insistence that it has the right to appoint bishops and the jailing of priests who professed loyalty to the pope.

Cardinals serve as advisers to the pontiff on matters of teaching and administration, including the Vatican’s scandal-plagued finances. But their most crucial duty is gathering in a secret conclave to elect the next pontiff. Francis has named numerous batches of new cardinals in his 10-year papacy. That means, increasingly, the men who will vote for whoever succeeds him, in the event of his resignation or death, are churchmen supportive of his values, priorities and perspectives.

Other churchmen chosen to receive the cardinal red include those from Cape Town, South Africa; Juba, South Sudan, which the pope visited earlier this year on a pilgrimage; Penang, Malaysia; and Lodz, Poland.

Eighteen of the 21 new cardinals are younger than 80 and would be eligible to vote in a conclave.

Cancer-Fighting Diet: 10 Foods To Include In Your Meal Plan

Cancer is a complex disease influenced by a variety of factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental exposures.

While there is no sure way to prevent cancer, eating a healthy diet rich in certain foods has been shown to reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

It is important to note that no single food or dietary component can completely prevent cancer, but incorporating a variety of cancer-fighting foods into your diet can help you feel better overall.

1. Fruits and Vegetables:

A diet high in fruits and vegetables has long been linked to a lower risk of several cancers. These plant-based foods are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, all of which are essential for good health.

maintaining optimal health and preventing chronic diseases, including cancer. Fruits and vegetables contain various phytochemicals, such as carotenoids (e.g., beta-carotene), flavonoids, and polyphenols, which have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties.

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale are particularly beneficial due to their high content of glucosinolates. These compounds are known to activate enzymes that help detoxify carcinogens and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Additionally, dark leafy greens like spinach and Swiss chard are rich in folate, a B-vitamin that plays a role in DNA synthesis and repair.

Fruits such as berries (e.g., strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries), citrus fruits (e.g., oranges, lemons), and tomatoes are excellent sources of antioxidants like vitamin C and various phytochemicals. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that can lead to DNA mutations and cancer development.

2. Whole Grains:

Whole grains include foods like whole wheat, brown rice, oats, quinoa, and barley. Unlike refined grains, whole grains retain the bran, germ, and endosperm, providing a rich source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. High-fiber diets have been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Fiber helps promote regular bowel movements, which can decrease the time that potential carcinogens spend in contact with the intestinal lining.

Whole grains also contain various antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that possess anti-cancer properties. For example, lignans found in flaxseeds and whole grains have been shown to inhibit tumor growth and reduce the risk of hormone-related cancers like breast and prostate cancer.

3. Legumes:

Legumes, including beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas, are excellent sources of plant-based protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. They have been associated with a reduced risk of several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer. Legumes are rich in folate, which plays a role in DNA synthesis and repair. They also contain resistant starches that can help regulate blood sugar levels and promote gut health.

Additionally, legumes contain various bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and phytosterols, that possess anti-cancer properties. For instance, soybeans and soy products contain isoflavones called genistein and daidzein that have been studied for their potential to inhibit the growth of hormone-related cancers.

4. Healthy Fats:

While it is important to limit saturated and trans fats in the diet as they have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, incorporating healthy fats into your diet is beneficial. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel) and flaxseeds have been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

5. Green Tea:

Green tea is a popular beverage that has been consumed for centuries and is known for its potential health benefits. It contains polyphenols, particularly catechins, which have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties. Green tea has been associated with a reduced risk of several types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer. The exact mechanisms by which green tea may help prevent cancer are still being studied, but it is believed that the polyphenols can inhibit tumor growth and promote cancer cell death.

6. Garlic and Onions

Garlic and onions belong to the Allium family of vegetables and are widely used in various cuisines for their flavor and potential health benefits. They contain organosulfur compounds that have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties. These compounds can help inhibit the formation of cancer-causing substances, enhance DNA repair, and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. Garlic and onions have been associated with a reduced risk of stomach, colorectal, and prostate cancers.

7. Berries:

Berries such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are not only delicious but also packed with antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that have been shown to possess anti-cancer properties. The high content of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals in berries contributes to their potential cancer-fighting effects. For example, ellagic acid, found in berries, has been studied for its ability to inhibit tumor growth and reduce inflammation.

8. Turmeric:

Turmeric is a spice commonly used in Indian cuisine and contains a compound called curcumin. Curcumin has been extensively studied for its potential anti-cancer effects. It possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties that may help prevent or slow down the progression of certain types of cancer. Curcumin has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, induce apoptosis, and interfere with various signaling pathways involved in cancer development.

9. Nuts and Seeds:

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, are nutrient-dense foods that provide a wide range of health benefits. They are rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Several studies have suggested that regular consumption of nuts and seeds may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including colorectal and breast cancer. For example, walnuts contain polyphenols and omega-3 fatty acids that have been associated with anti-cancer effects.

10. Mushrooms:

Certain types of mushrooms, such as shiitake, maitake, reishi, and oyster mushrooms, have been used in traditional medicine for their potential health benefits. They contain bioactive compounds like beta-glucans and polysaccharides that have been shown to possess immune-enhancing and anti-cancer properties. Some studies have suggested that mushrooms may help inhibit tumor growth and stimulate the immune system’s response to cancer cells.

While incorporating these foods into your diet may potentially reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, it is important to remember that overall lifestyle choices play a significant role in cancer prevention. Maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco products, limiting alcohol consumption, protecting yourself from excessive sun exposure, and getting regular screenings are all important factors in reducing the risk of cancer.

Chinese Billionaire Jack Ma’s Company Fined Nearly $1 Billion

China’s financial regulators have fined Ant Group, a fintech firm founded by billionaire Jack Ma, about 7.1 billion yuan ($994 million) for violating consumer protection and corporate governance rules.

The fines also affected business activities in banking and insurance, payments, anti-money laundering, and funds sales. Ant Group, an affiliate of e-commerce giant Alibaba, was fined 18.2 billion yuan ($2.5 billion) in April 2021 for being a monopoly.

The Chinese government’s crackdown aimed to curb private enterprise, which had become too powerful in the eyes of the ruling Communist Party. In April 2021, Alibaba was fined 18.2 billion yuan ($2.5 billion) for behaving like a monopoly.

Ma ceded control of Ant Group in January 2021, and since then, Alibaba has announced plans to split its business into six separate units, each overseen by its own CEO and board of directors.

Alibaba aims to build more nimble companies that create more value for investors. Additionally, China’s financial regulators have also announced a fine of nearly 3 billion yuan ($415 million) for Tenpay, Tencent’s online payment platform.

Pochettino Vows To Unlock Enzo, Mudryk, Sterling Potentials

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has outlined his plans for the team ahead of the pre-season, focusing on helping Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Raheem Sterling reach their full potential.

The 51-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain boss was hired in May after finishing 12th in the Premier League.

Pochettino believes that the new start is an opportunity for the players to show their real quality and create a platform for them to perform and improve.

Fernandez, named the best youngster at the World Cup, needed rest after a grueling schedule. Mudryk’s mindset and everything is different than Fernandez’s, so Pochettino intends to spend more time with the Ukrainian winger.

Sterling, a 28-year-old, is one of the more experienced players in the squad but has yet to replicate his performances from Manchester City.

Pochettino believes it’s not always to blame the players, but to see what is going on and why they are not performing in the way they expect. Once all is clear, Pochettino cannot give excuses to the players to not perform.

Chelsea Puts £40 Million Price Tag On Lukaku

Chelsea are ready to do business on a permanent sale for Romelu Lukaka after seeing him force his way out of Stamford Bridge.
They’ve decided that £40 million will suffice, and a couple of clubs are interested.

“Chelsea want £40 million for Romelu Lukaku after rejecting Inter’s latest bid for the striker,” the Daily Mail reports.

“Juventus and Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have also expressed interest, but Lukaku is set on returning to Inter, where he was on loan last season.

“Inter met with Lukaku’s lawyer last week, but their £23 million offer failed to persuade Chelsea, who want to recoup a larger portion of the £97.5 million they paid for the Belgian in 2021.”

Real Madrid Holds Off Signing French Star Mbappe

Despite recent developments involving Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid is still determined to wait until the summer of 2019 when he will be a free agent before signing him.

“Kylian Mbappe is still circling Real Madrid. Any action or comment made by the Frenchman, whose future is uncertain, inevitably brings up the Madrid club, although the club denies having any touch with the striker and even less with PSG,” says Marca.

They have repeatedly stated that there is no connection and no chance of a conversation-starting between the two sides over Mbappe or any other player.

They no longer discuss the purported arrangement to meet at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu that they allegedly had with the Frenchman.

“For that to happen, next January 1 he must have signed a contract with Real Madrid and for that reason the Spanish club’s leaders are not upset by everything that is happening with Mbappe, and the possible departure of the PSG striker.”

Onana Poised To Replace De Gea At Manchester United

Manchester United will sign Andre Onana now that David de Gea’s departure has been confirmed, according to the Telegraph.

“David de Gea has announced his departure from Manchester United this summer after 12 years at Old Trafford,” the paper writes, “with the club poised to step up their efforts to sign Inter Milan’s Andre Onana as his replacement.”

“Onana was Ten Hag’s goalkeeper when the Dutch reached the Champions League semi-finals before moving to Inter, where he reached the Champions League final last season.”

The Italian club wants £51.5 million for their keeper, and the deal is still in its early stages despite all parties’ willingness to do business.

“United are yet to make a formal offer but have verbally discussed the deal with Inter, with personal terms also yet to be discussed with the player. Ten Hag’s pre-season matches start on July 12 against Leeds and his squad will fly to America for a tour later this month.”

Pkosing Vows To Lead Azimio Signature Collections In Ruto Strongholds

South Pokot MP David Pkosing has declared that he will lead the collection of civil disobedience signatures in an attempt to depose President William Ruto.

The legislator, who was elected on the Kenya Union Party [KUP] ticket and is a member of Azimio’s bipartisan committee panel, stated that he is engaged in grassroots mobilization, network building, and preparations for the signature drive and mega demos.

Speaking to the press in Kapenguria, a former ally of President Ruto stated that Kenyans are angry and dissatisfied with the Kenya Kwanza government’s promises.

Pkosing, who admitted to voting ‘NO’ on the contentious Finance Bill, has accused the government of failing to improve security in the Kerio Valley region.
