Activists Demand Release Of Saba Saba Day Protesters

Amnesty International has asked the Government to immediately release all protesters arrested for participating in the Azimio la Umoja protests held today.

In a statement, Amnesty International urged police to refrain from using disproportionate and unlawful force, which might result in injuries and fatalities.

“We have received reports of arbitrary arrests of protestors in Nairobi, Western Kenya, and selective use of excessive force against those exercising their right,” stated Executive Director Irungu Houghton.

According to the human rights organization, measures taken to ensure the Kamukunji rally proceeds peacefully ought to have been deployed across all other parts of the country.

Irungu affirms that protesters should be allowed to express themselves and register their dissent with recent taxation measures and the cost of living.

He notes that today’s protest commemorates the historical “Saba Saba” movement which “significantly expanded human rights and democracy” during the second liberation in the 1990s.

Grandmother, 3 Others Found Guilty Of Removing Baby Sagini Eyes

Three suspects have been found guilty of causing grievous harm to Baby Junior Sagini, the three-year-old child whose eyes were gouged out in December last year in Kisii County’s Ikuruma Village.

Kisii Law Courts Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Ogweno, who delivered the verdict on Friday, stated that the three suspects, who included the baby’s grandmother, aunt, and cousin, were found guilty of the heinous crime.

The three suspects, Rael Nyakerario (Grandmother), Alex Ochogo (Cousin), and Pacificah Nyakerario (Aunt), were charged with attempted murder on January 18 but the charges were later changed to causing grievous bodily harm under Section 4 of the Penal Code after Prosecutor Hillary Kaino applied to the court to amend the charges.

During a virtual cross-examination in March, Sagini claimed that his grandmother used her hands to gouge out his eyes and dumped him on a maize plantation.

Sagini’s sister testified in court that on December 13, 2022, they went to the river to fetch water as usual, but Sagini did not show up because he had misplaced his water jerrican.

She described how they went about their daily lives until the next day when their grandmother was informed that Baby Sagini had been found dumped in a maize plantation.

They went in search of him, and later, police officers arrived and took the baby to the hospital for treatment.

Daniel Nyameino, a clinician at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, told the court that he received a medical report from Rioma Station of Baby Sagini on December 29, 2022, and after examining him, he determined that unknown people assaulted the baby between December 13 and 14, 2022.

He stated that Baby Sagini had scratch marks that could have been caused by more than one person, as well as severe injuries.

The prosecution has requested a sentencing date, which will be decided on July 21, 2023.

Verstappen Tops British Grand Prix First Practice

Max Verstappen led team-mate Sergio Perez in a Red Bull one-two in first practice at the British Grand Prix.

Williams driver Alex Albon was an unexpected third fastest, 0.253 seconds off the pace, an indication that other teams have not reached their ultimate potential this weekend.

Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin was the first established front-runner behind the Red Bulls in fourth.

He headed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fifth place by just 0.012 seconds.

Alonso was 0.668secs slower than Verstappen, who is looking for a sixth consecutive victory this weekend, with Perez 0.448secs off the benchmark set by his team-mate.

Verstappen’s pace, despite complaints from the Dutchman about a lack of grip that he said felt “like driving on ice”, confirmed the expectation pre-race that Silverstone’s high-speed swerves would emphasise the Red Bull’s advantages over the rest of the field.

Esteban Ocon put in a promising showing and set the sixth fastest time in the upgraded Alpine, which has a new front wing, ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and the McLaren of Lando Norris.

Norris, too, has a new front wing in addition to the major upgrade that improved the performance of the McLaren at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend.

Mercedes had a difficult session. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were only 12th and 14th fastest, despite both cars being fitted with yet another new front wing as Mercedes continue to deliver upgrades aimed at returning them to a competitive position.

Russell complained that the car was “all over the place in Turns Six and Seven” as both drivers seemed to be battling with a lack of rear grip, a perennial problem for Mercedes since the start of 2022.

Mercedes did not run the soft tyre, which will have affected their positions.

The teams were having their first experience of the new Pirelli tyre, introduced for the rest of the season with a stronger construction to reduce chances of failure.

The session took place under blue skies in temperatures of close to 25C and in front of packed grandstands, with a total of 480,000 expected at Silverstone over the three days of the race meeting.

Unsettled weather with the chance of rain is expected over the weekend.

Those there will have the chance to see Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt driving in a modified Formula 2 car as filming starts for the new Apple F1 movie.

The Oscar winner, who has been practising at Silverstone in the lead up to the race, is playing a veteran racer who returns to the sport to mentor a rising young star.

Man Utd Hope To Conclude Deal For Inter’s Onana

Manchester United are hopeful of concluding a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to resolve concerns over the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford amid uncertainty over David de Gea’s future.

De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of last month with no agreement over a revised offer put to the former Spain international.

Onana, 27, kept eight clean sheets in 24 games in Serie A last season.

The Cameroonian also kept eight clean sheets in 13 matches in the Champions League last season – the most of any goalkeeper in the competition.

Ten Hag managed Onana at former club Ajax and the Dutchman believes the player is up to the level he demands and will easily adapt to life in the Premier League.

By contrast, Ten Hag is not convinced De Gea’s ability with the ball at his feet is up to the required standard.

Although United’s budget is limited by financial fair play restrictions, and there has still been no clarity over the club’s ownership situation, Ten Hag feels a goalkeeper and a centre-forward are attainable, particularly as departures should cover some of the cost.

Onana would become United’s second signing of the summer after midfielder Mason Mount joined the Red Devils from Chelsea for an initial £55m earlier this week.

Ancelotti Is Not To Brazil President Lula’s Taste As National Coach

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticised the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as the new Brazil football coach, claiming he would be better off sorting out the Italian national team’s problems.

Italian Ancelotti, who has won the Champions League a record four times as a coach, will take charge prior to the Copa America in the United States next June after honouring the final year of his contract with Real Madrid.

“I admire Ancelotti, but he has never been Italy’s national coach,” Lula told TV station SBT on Thursday.

“Why does he not resolve Italy’s problem, who did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup?” added the 77-year-old.

In the interim, Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz will be in charge of Brazil for their opening 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“I am a fan of Diniz,” said Lula. “He has the personality, the creativity and it is he who commands the dressing room.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has opted for 64-year-old Ancelotti believing one of the most successful coaches in European football history will deliver them their sixth World Cup trophy but first since 2002.

The desire is even greater after bitter rivals Argentina won in Qatar last December.

Brazil were knocked out in the quarterfinals and coach Tite stepped down.

“It is very easy to coach a club in Europe with 11 international players in the team,” said Lula.

“What is difficult is to come here and to coach Corinthians (who are in danger of relegation from the top league).

“I would like to see if Ancelotti did a good job with Corinthians.”

Lula is pessimistic that no matter who the coach is they will have a tough time in the World Cup qualifiers with the present generation of Brazil players.

“The problem is not Diniz, the problem is we do not possess today the level of players we had in previous eras,” said Lula.

Ancelotti will be the fourth non-Brazilian to coach Brazil. The last was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game in 1965.

UN To Support Thousands Who Fled Into South Sudan

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, Peter Van der Auweraert, has released $8m (£6.3m) from the humanitarian fund to provide life-saving assistance to the 150,000 people in the country who have fled the conflict in Sudan.

The number of arrivals is projected to increase as the crisis continues, the UN’s humanitarian affairs office (Ocha) has said.

Onward transportation of South Sudanese returnees and Sudanese refugees from transit sites remains a significant challenge due to the combination of poor road infrastructure and insecurity in some areas. There are also the additional logistical challenges posed by the onset of the rainy season, Ocha added.

“Many people who fled the conflict in Sudan are arriving across the border with nothing. Many reported that they were subjected to violence and exploitation, such as extortion and looting, as they fled to South Sudan. They need urgent support to reach safety and rebuild their lives,” Mr Van der Auweraert said.

The fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), now in its third month, has displaced nearly three million people, according to estimates by humanitarian agencies.

The largest number of refugees have gone to Chad and Egypt.

Ethiopia Church Apologises To Followers In Tigray Over War

The highest decision-making body of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church – the Holy Synod – has issued an apology to the people of Tigray in connection with the devastating war that unfolded in the Tigray region.

In a statement released on Thursday, the synod expressed regret for not ensuring the safety of church leaders and followers during the conflict.

Criticism has been directed towards the church from bishops, priests and worshippers in Tigray for not condemning the war, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.

Earlier this year, Tigray bishops had even announced their intention to establish an independent church outside the synod and appoint their own bishops.

Since the conclusion of the war in late 2022, the Holy Synod has been actively seeking reconciliation with the Orthodox leaders in Tigray.

A statement from the synod read that it had “officially apologised for the failure to promptly deliver humanitarian assistance in accordance with the decision of the Holy Synod after the war ended and peace was restored”.

A member of the Tigray executive committee of bishops told the BBC that “forgiveness is a fundamental principle and process within the church. While we cannot view this as a significant step forward, it does mark a positive beginning”.

He criticised the apology as a tactical move that fell short of acknowledging the magnitude of the injustices committed.

The bishop clarified that the church recognises His Holiness Abune Matthias as their patriarch and has no intentions of appointing any other patriarch.

Man Jailed 20 years For Stealing Ksh 780

Makindu Magistrates Law Court sentenced a man to 20 years in jail for stealing Ksh780, clothes, and a pair of shoes.

Senior Principal Magistrate Ireri found Boniface Maingi guilty of robbery with violence in an incident that happened on January 18, 2020, at Emali Township in Makueni County.

According to the trial Magistrate, the prosecution led by state prosecutor Catherine Ngari proved the case through testimonies from four witnesses whose evidence corroborated.

The prosecution relied on police reports, eyewitnesses and circumstantial evidence to place Maingi at the scene of crime.

The Court relied on Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code that defines robbery with violence as an incident where the offender is armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument or is in company with one or more other person or persons, or if, at or immediately before or after the time of the robbery, he wounds, beats, or uses any other personal violence to any person, he shall be liable to imprisonment for life.
